On resolutions, Tom and Sara both said elsewhere that the game auto-populates based on compatible resolutions for your monitor. This should hopefully work with downsampling tools like GeDoSaTo. I'm glad to hear the UI controls are better vs. Zwei!!, since that game has a really cumbersome inventory and hotbar to handle.
In fact, that's how I tested stuff as silly-high as 8k. GeDoSaTo works just fine with the game.

I know I said 30€ is a bit pricey and I'm completely overloaded on games atm anyway, but who am I kidding.
Bought.

The extra 10% from Humble Monthly are so good.

herm.... shouldn't the game be 60 fps?
It's mentioned in the OP. I'm still working on that, but the game was basically hardcoded for 30 FPS (with 60 FPS in use for just a couple things like inputs), and until I can fix the hardcoded aspects, it's not going to run at 60. That'll unfortunately be a post-launch feature. I'm also likely going to have to edit animations or find a way to blend them smoothly... it's been complicated, hahah. But I -have- been working on it.

Really loving this so far. Got it right as it showed up, downloaded it in 10 minutes and have been playing it all the way up till now. Taking a break, but so far my takeaways are: fun combat, amazing music as expected of Falcom, lots of charm sprinkled on top of the fun dialogue. I'm feeling this game for sure.

I just bought it on GOG due to the pedigree (Falcom + XSEED) alone, despite not being sure what it exactly is or when I'll have time for it.

Wait... the fuck? This is out today?

I had literally no idea until I saw this thread. XSEED, I love you, and I love that you're bringing these games out over here, but I don't understand your approach to marketing... like, at all.

That aside, I'm buying this on GOG right now.

For those already playing, how does the game feel to play? Is it more similar to Gurumin, Xanadu Next, Adol-only Ys or party Ys?

They've been tweeting about the game non-stop for about a week and a half now.

I'd like for this game to succeed in some form. :( Or at least sell more than the JP release which isn't a high bar to begin with.

Devil Halton's Trap
Operation Rainfall review is up, 6/10. I don't agree with parts of it, but I understand where the author's coming from since he said (on Twitter) he had much less time to play the game for review than he would have liked. Also, the game's not really at 60 FPS yet, which is kind of important to mention upfront rather than learn as a surprise.

Now it's time for me to boot up this thang.

They have ~62k total followers on Twitter and even a small fraction of that can add up in sales and word of mouth, so all the attention's been on keeping up pace with Zwei: II posts there. I think release date announcement timing's a much bigger worry.

More like Xanadu Next's combat and world/character detail with Gurumin's level structure and humor (but snarkier). Combat's a mix of special moves from Gurumin, combo-ing and pace from Ys, and quick inventory use and equipment from Xananext.

I too own the game, looking forward to playing it!
...I uh, still have the first game to go through with the fan translation. And I still have a ton of other stuff on my plate at the moment. But I own it! For the Falcom translation budget. :P

Since I forgot, RPGSite put up their review.

How long is the game?
Since there's a good amount of top ranks, info books, and side content to obtain and achieve, the game can reach up past 30 hours on the way to 40 or more if you're a completionist. The main story's around 15-25 hours. It's certainly longer than mid-2000s Ys and other games like Xanadu Next and Gurumin, but also well-paced and full of meaningful activity and story.

Is the first game even fan translated?

Nice to see Sara and H.Protagonist made it over to Era.

Made it work out and picked this up. I'll probably put off playing it for a while though and maybe that 60FPS update will hit.

So, uh, I'm glad the game's designed for 30 FPS (visuals) since this game sure doesn't like it when I bump up texture to full resolution. No character LOD and reflections don't cause issues, and I'm not sure if V-sync's a problem yet either, but my toaster's just matching the quality I hoped for looking at screenshots. Some textures are higher-res than the others in a weird way, too, and the great visual style makes up for graphics enough for me to drop everything. If texture res shouldn't cause performance drops, though, then that's something.

Game's very funny already, and I'm about to head out to the first dungeon.

so... is there a treasure in every level? I see a red cross next to the word treasure, so does that mean there's not one or that it's not discovered yet?

also how do you "break" an ennemy?

Like the first Zwei!!, this game has critical strikes which immediately send an enemy airborne, primed for juggling. It's a lot more obvious in the prequel because you get a meter for timing critical strikes right from the start—criticals are actually essential to surviving trap fights in that game! Here in Zwei: II, there just isn't anything that threatening early on, and so Falcom's made that meter into an optional widget you can buy at the airfield.

Not every floor of a dungeon level has a treasure, but I imagine most of them have at least one.

I've beaten Secundum Mines after almost two-and-a-half hours, some of which I spent getting introduced to Artte. (Can you go to Roalta Village that early?) First main boss was pretty good, but would be a painful no-healing fight without returning to Artte at least once for an extra defense accessory. Dungeon floors are well-designed and just big enough so far, though I feel Zwei!! lets you speed through them quicker. At least the upper-tier medals come easier now.

the game is beautiful and there's something about falcom's humor(probably xseed's humor too) that really works for me, i noticed that with trails in the sky/cold steel too. The scope of the game might be larger than i imagined so i'll probably be busy with this game for a while, really happy with first impressions.

So, I've run into a strange glitch. I was messing around with input options to see how I preferred to play it, and the performance started to tank anytime the game was set for keyboard controls. It works fine with a game pad set as the input, but otherwise, the game runs at like half speed.

GOG version? It's been fixed in the latest Steam build, but a few days ago GOG asked us not to submit any patches until after launch, so GOG hasn't quite gotten the fix yet (it has been submitted though).

Have you been able to replicate this shading glitch, Sara? Artte Airfield seems like the only place I've seen this happen.
Unsure, but fixing stuff like this in particular isn't my area of expertise per se and it'd be a low-priority issue. I'll try to look into it in the future (please, please post in the Steam forum bug threads, that's how I keep track nowadays), but I can't make a promise on this one. Likely to be something odd like an obscure math edge case, though...

Argh! Too many good games releasing around the same. This seems like something right up my alley. I need to thank this community for introducing me to Xanadu Next.

GOG's got this up on top of the sales page, which is nice. It sucks to hear the GOG version's having issues because it's not the most recent Steam build...which seems to be a problem on GOG's end.

I meant to answer your question about "break"ing enemies, so the post's edited.

No worries. I posted the screens there with my PC info.

So I finally met Gallandeau.

...He's basically an even sillier take on the explorer from Zwei!! who teaches new specials to you. Arcanum skills sure are nice, the perfect incentive to keep the combo meter up. Ordium Shrine's throwing a bunch of enemies at me now.

I've shown my day-one support by purchasing the game but I won't have time to boot it up until Friday. :-\

At least it'll be a nice birthday present for myself :-)

I'm enjoying the game quite a bit so far. Combat is a bit simple compared to Ys or Xanadu Next, but still a lot of fun. The switch mechanic to alternate between Ragna and Alwen works really well. The game has a ton of charm with the character design and art direction, the usual quality Falcom music, and Xseed did a nice job on the translation and picking voice actors. Right now I'm playing through Steam Link mode on my Samsung, and the game plays pretty well with my Steam controller. I would love to see a nice texture mod upgrade (the game is colorful and looks pretty good, but it's nearly 10 years old) and would be willing to help out if anyone knows how to dump/access the texture files.

Barring a few reviews not counted in the main average (Gamer Escape, 9/10, Hey Poor Player, 8/10, and Operation Rainfall, 6/10 in the OP), OpenCritic's averaging Zwei: II at 80. Lots of Chinese players are playing the game or at least they're the main reviewing demographic on Steam. I wonder if XSEED will experiment with Chinese translation for PC releases in the near-future since this pattern also happened with Cold Steel PC.
