1. Is there a preload?

From a Steam Community Post

We've decided that RUINER won't be available for pre-load. However, in order to make your lives a little bit easier (at least at the beginning, because later, it will be much tougher, believe us), we've reduced the game file size from 21 GB to 10 GB only.

2. Who is Susumu Hirasawa?

Hirasawa-sensei is a Japanese electronic music composer. The primary source of inspiration for his music can be traced back to the digital technology, the nature of man and machine, and philosophy. His most widely known work is the theme song for Berserk, a lesser known 1997 anime. He also composed the theme song for Paprika (dir. Satoshi Kon, 2006) and Millenium Actress (dir Satoshi Kon, 2002). His style can be described as techno/electro-pop. He can be found in twitter here, and his discography here

3. Why is this OT so barebones?

I wasn't planning to do this OT originally, so I quickly whip out this OT in a couple of hours after dinner. PM me if you feel any extra info should be included.

4. I'm downloading the game now, what anime should I watch in the meantime?

Finished RUINER on Friday. What a great game. Visually, a beautiful looking game overall with the only complaint being "too much red" at times but it's a minor complaint. Music and sound effects were awesome. I listened to the soundtrack yesterday and it's great. Effects were all good. Minimal at best voice acting but what's there is good. Would have loved the entire game to have voice acting. Gameplay is excellent once you get used to the controls. The L1 dash/multi-dash was my only complaint gameplay wise. Didn't like half of the skills but the few I used were good. Story was average at best but all the characters including the enemies were good. The boss fights were also good and fighting all the enemies never got repetitive or boring for me at all. Side quests were decent and easy. Completed on normal in under nine hours real time, not game listed time. And on a final note, a lot of stuff including a certain character reminded me of Snatcher. Shadowrun (snes) also popped into my head as well while playing but more Snatcher than Shadowrun. Enjoyed the game from beginning to end.

Graphics - 9/10 (excellent)
Music/Sound - 9/10 (excellent)
Gameplay - 9/10 (excellent)
Story/Characters - 7/10 (good)
Overall - 8.5/10 (great)

A footnote:
I was toying with the idea of bringing this OT to ERA whilst waiting for my account to get approved during the exodus. However, I was a bit reluctant since this game flew under the radar and not many people was aware of it, and the thread itself was inactive for at least a few days. Yesterday, in The Hidden Gems of 2017 thread, this game was mentioned by a couple of Resettlers (I still can't get used to that word, but I digress). In the spirit of fostering our new community, I decided to bring this OT over, just as a reminder that this game exists. :-)

Finally, if your name is credited in the OT above, and has since changed after The Exodus, please let me know and I'll update the OP accordingly. :-)

Enjoy!

Awesome OT! I'm still really on the fence about this one. Heard a lot of people say its quite difficult. I mean I like a challenge, but not unfair hard parts like some sections of Ori. Stuff like that can ruin a game for me. How hard is it compared to like Ori? I managed to beat that in the end but got frustrated in a few parts.

It's kinda hard, but the latest patch actually re-balances the difficulty so that getting mobbed by waves of enemies is now less punishing. Boss fight was still as difficult pre-patch, at least in my opinion. I didn't play Ori, so I can't really say, sorry.

I just beat TraffiKing and currently have him in tow in Hell.

Do I have a lot longer to go?

The game is really easy once you know what the stronger upgrades are (Personal shield fully upgraded). If you're having trouble you could always turn down the difficulty until you've figured it out.

Do I have a lot longer to go?

You're in the final stretch

Visually, Ruiner is cool. Aurally, Ruiner is amazing.

It's an okay game.

I'm not sure how well it works if using a keyboard and mouse, but it has made some gameplay choices that I don't think work well.

- Rotation: there's no quick turn, movement is measured, everything is on rotation. Which, can be an odd choice for a twin-stick. The idea, I think, is to balance this with the movement skills, which I guess could work.

- Direction: the game is played from an isometric view, but it seems as though the axis is off-centre to match. So, when you want to run up or down, you're not going to be holding up, it'll be an slight off angle.

Both of the above can affect the feel. I just stopped bothering with a lot of ranged weapons, and mostly used melee as that's a little more forgiving.

I am forced to use KB/M and honestly it isn't so bad. It is a challenging game but I don't attribute that to the controls, as of yet, at least

Got Ruiner today on gog, it was like ten bucks.

I'm finding the control scheme cumbersome. This is gonna take some adjustment.

I got the platinum last month. I enjoyed the ride but wished there was more to it.

Coming from a game like Nex Machina to Ruiner really showed how the controls in Ruiner were not as smooth.

I'm also confused on the point of letter grades after a level. They served no purpose.

I'll defintely be back once DLC hits. I can recommend it whether it's on sale or not.

The soundtrack is awesome, btw.

This game is not clicking for me. The enemies (and their attacks) are hard to see, shooting doesn't feel right, the weird random slow-mo takes me out of the action and I feel like there is an overabundance of special moves and mechanics. Hotline Miami found excellence in its simplicity. And the color scheme actually made my eyes a bit watery.

I bought this on the Autumn sale, and I've been loving it - I initially put off buying it because of the complaints about difficulty and controls, but its been very smooth sailing for me. The combat really reminds me of how I'd replay sections of FEAR over and over just because of how badass and stylish you feel while laying waste to everyone.

Is the update already available for PS4?

Oh, and taking advantage of this opportunity, how's PS4 Pro performance?

This was a great game. The combo that seemed to be really effective was the shield that you can throw out to scramble/slow down enemies and dashing to them with physical attacks. Music was incredible and the aesthetics made the game world feel alive. I actually would not mind more games taking place in the world they built. The only down side is I do wish there were more RPG elements and maybe more to do in the hub world.

Played it on kbm and loved the shit out of the game. Never had a problem with guns after the first patch bumped travel rate.

The hub area looks and sounds great - it really sells you on the world. Only that yeah, you don't get to spend much time in it, nor do you do much in it. A wasted opportunity.

Europacorp has made a pre-emptive move to acquire TV rights to Ruiner, a new video game title from Devolver Digital and Reikon Games. DJ2 Entertainment co-founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson, whose company discovered the game and partnered with Luc Besson's Europacorp shortly after its September release, is executive producing along Besson and with DJ2's Stephan Bugaj.

Where does the office space featured in the last two gifs in the op happen? I don't ever remember that level unless I missed something or it's dlc?

I asked on Twitter when PS4 players would see the Cringe and Savage updates.. all I got was "Early 2018". Who knows if they just meant that only Savage update would be coming.

How well does this play with a pad? And how much Hotline Miami gameplay wise is it?

(Also is there a chance it will be cheaper in the winter sale?). Love the look of this but penny pinching at the moment.

It plays a lot like Hotline Miami, with a dash of slowmo and a lot of extended abilities. You run through levels and get gated until you clear the waves that show up. The combat is far more fun than Hotline imo.

so the shield is good? Didn't even try it because enemies attack you from all directions.
Took overload instead

I played it thru normal and it's far less difficult than Hotline Miami btw (the first one). I sort of get the difficulty complaints but really, the abilities you get pretty much break the difficulty, it gets way easier towards the end.

The game is short (4-6 hours) but you get a NG+ to go through.

Got this on sale the other day for PS4. Really digging this. Has shades of Hyper Light Drifter play to me which was my GOTY 2016.
