Crybaby was my first experience with Devilman outside of "look how bad this 80s dub is" videos. Gonna have to read/watch more of the other series (versions? are they all more or less retellings?)
Pacing was an issue, but I really enjoyed it.
Really fucked up that the whole thing seems like God just setting Ryo/Satan up again and again. At least that's how I interpreted old Earth getting turned into a moon for the new Earth, and Ryo mentioning he had been on the moon before.

Huh I thought it was neat that the
moon that got bloody split in half formed into individual moons post-credits.
Also I may be the only one that liked the Amon OVA, and I adored the credits theme.
Here's this shit:

Also had no idea that Devilman and Go Nagai's works in general were such an influence to other creators. Any suggestions for older influential stuff I can read/watch?

So I just wrapped it up and this will be a very memorable anime. It's impactful to me for a number of reasons but I have to say the score REALLY heightens everything about it. This isn't the kind of music I'd ever seek out and listen to on it's own, but within the context of the show it's really something else.

After reading through this topic, I was curious about the spin offs of this series. I read the synopsis of Devilman Lady. And I haven't looked into whatever Violence Jack is all about yet, but is it also tied into the Devilman lore? I'm afraid to take a deep dive into Go Nagais mind because there seem to be some truly terrifying things in there.

Watched it with the gf and loved it. Loved every minute of it. It took a bit for her to get into it, but once the bombs start dropping she loved it too.

Awesome show!

I watched this a few days ago. Marathonned the whole thing in one sitting. I can't stop thinking about it. Crybaby is going to be one of the best anime this year. It's definitely going to be the most unique animation showcase. Everything about the animation is unique and inventive and the retro synthwave soundtrack was an excellent choice. You'd think something like Devilman would have a metal soundtrack but I feel like the synthwave gives it a grungier, dirtier feeling to the whole ordeal that works much better than a more predictable metal OST would have. I've been recommending it to friends who I know can handle the mature content and the ones that bit and watched the series have all thanked me for the recommendation.

Crybaby's depiction of humanity tearing itself apart over fear and distrust is going to stick with me forever.

That first episode sure was something. Can't make head or tails of what I was watching or what was happening, but that's kinda par for the course with Yuasa I guess. Curious to see how the story develops in coming episodes. More similarities with Kemonozume than I had expected.

Good to know cuz Netflix skips to the next episode once the credits roll.

It shouldn't with 9 and 10, at least German Netflix didn't. Watching 9 without the credits would be a crime anyway.

So I just wrapped this up.

Was...was Evangelion just Devilman this whole time?

Naaah, they really don't have much in common besides the whole
world ending
part.

Evangelion lives more off of a good dose of Ultraman with a giant dose of Ideon, character studies and a dash of religious symbolism to taste. That's kind of Anno's thing, he'd already demonstrated that (better) in Fushigi no Umi no Nadia.

I will even argue the old OVA not even looks great tbh

Its chara design look so vanilla from its era, those various mecha OVA (Getter etc) adopt nagai chara design better IMO

Just watched the first episode. I hated the animation. Not sure why anyone would choose to watch this over the original OVA.

Sooo
are we to assume that, once again, God rebooted the world? Is Ryo still stuck in the cycle?

Yes and that would be the sequel. Or any sequel to the series with Devilman Lady and Violence Jack.

Dunno why people hate the animation. There are rarely anime like this that can express emotion and are that fluid. We should be happy that it looks like this and not like any other 0815 anime. I guess this is the point where I start to really appreciate art and where I finally realize that I have an opinion of art lol

People complaining about Devilmans art wouldn't survive watching Kemonzume or Ping Pong.

Stayed up all night watching it, what a ride. I had no idea what to expect and it was first off put, but I came around on it pretty quick. Weird, weird fucking show.

If this is your first exposure to Devilman and you enjoyed it, I'd really recommend checking out the original two part OVA as well.

The OVA looks amazing and so does Crybaby. It's no Ping Pong where animation quality and diversity goes, but it's still great. I can see why most people would prefer a more "solid" animation style since that's what they've been seeing for decades and "wobbly", expressive animation like this is pretty rare (and seldom done successfully).

They both look great. The OVA is a perfect recration of the manga and translating them to animation. It has great use of colors and lighting. But Crybaby is so inventive and experimental in it's animation that I feel like I'm constantly seeing new things presented in ways I've never seen before. I can definitely say it's not for everyone, but the same could be said about the OVA's character artwork, which are so evocative of the original 70's character designs.

Just binged 7 episodes when I should have been sleeping. This show is crazy. I had zero expectations, just decided to check out an episode after seeing the running gif.

The 80s OVA looks great, I didn't know much about Devilman other than seeing the art before. Didn't even realize this Netflix show and it were related. Gonna seek out the OVA after I finish this.

I'm five episodes into it now. I probably should've started it sooner, but oh well. It's really well done. It follows the manga while also doing its own things. It's definitely messed up, as it should be. I find it really weird that Devilman exists in-universe as an anime. Like, does nobody notice the similarities between the show and what's going on?

Also, do they ever explain exactly why demonic possessions are on the rise? Devilman Lady did, but it wasn't because of demons. I'm curious if there's an actual explanation.

Also also, the soundtrack to this show is awesome!

Yes, but now, unlike before...

Ryo/Satan know's what Love is :)

My only question is,
what evidence in Crybaby suggests the loop will continue? Other than the moons/post credits?

Wait, there's even any anime nowadays that have this classic visual style, or this kind of animation died with the 90's ?
