doki doki doesn't handle well the subject matters at all but to be honest it doesn't even try, it's a level entry meta-visual novel, it got famous because it was made from the west for the west, it's quick and free. you shouldn't take it as a ground breaking VN for its portrait of depression and mental health issues because it's not.The biggest disconnect of 2017 for me has to be Doki Doki Literature Club. I see so many people raving about it, but I thought it was absolutely terrible. Sure, it has some interesting ideas, but nothing that hasn't been done before with much better execution. And then there's an even bigger disconnect when I see people saying it handles the subject matters well... I could not disagree more.
