The biggest disconnect of 2017 for me has to be Doki Doki Literature Club. I see so many people raving about it, but I thought it was absolutely terrible. Sure, it has some interesting ideas, but nothing that hasn't been done before with much better execution. And then there's an even bigger disconnect when I see people saying it handles the subject matters well... I could not disagree more.
doki doki doesn't handle well the subject matters at all but to be honest it doesn't even try, it's a level entry meta-visual novel, it got famous because it was made from the west for the west, it's quick and free. you shouldn't take it as a ground breaking VN for its portrait of depression and mental health issues because it's not.
katawa shoujo did a far better work

I definitely didn't go in expecting anything revolutionary, or even tasteful, as I had a bit of warning of what to expect beforehand. But the developer seems to think he did a good job in dealing with those sensitive matters, which I guess is a given, since he developed it. I will say though that even if respectfully depicting and representing mental health issues wasn't the goal of the game, it will still be rightfully judged by the way it depicts these issues. My confusion is more with people feeling it handled it well when you have things like Yuri sneaking out of class to cut herself, then the player bumping into her with her making creepy serial killer-esque facial expressions and heavy breathing. Complete with random glitches and blood seeping out of her eye. It's revealed in the end that Monika was amplifying the characters' issues to make them undesirable to the player, but I still felt that was making a mockery of some pretty serious issues for the sake of making the player feel unsettled/scared. I felt like the game was shouting "See! Isn't this really creepy? Are you scared? I bet you weren't expecting this when choosing to play this cutesey visual novel, huh? Look how we subverted your expectations!" Personally I found the glitches so over the top that I just found it ridiculous rather than disturbing. Even with the warning beforehand, I went into the game with an open mind, but found it to be even worse than described.

I haven't heard of Katawa Shoujo, but after looking it up, it seems to have had a good reception for how it handles those issues.

You can always watch it on Easy Allies Plays afterwards. If you subscribe to that channel, you get it in your subbox.
You can also check easyallies.com and check out their schedule or put their schedule on your Calendar (there is a link for Google Calendar, but those also work in Thunderbird for example).

I honestly am not sure everybody will be happy with a constant stream of promos + it will be a lot of extra work to make those. As the allies are with a lot of people who tend to stream, there will be a lot of notifications. The big difference with other streamers imo is that they are usually alone, so they stream maybe every weekend or something, but I am somewhat afraid the EZA youtube channel will quickly fill up with promos for every stream they do and it will make it more difficuly to find "the real" content for people who are just browsing the channel.

They just need a short video each week detailing what they'll be doing and that it's going to be starting soon. It doesn't have to be well produced or anything. And then after the stream, they can delete the promo video.

And I'm only meaning the weekly group streams, not the individual streams.

That seems like a lot of work for a video that's going to be deleted in a couple days. They texhnically don't know what game they are going to be streaming until the poll closes so it would be weird to poat the video before then. Then they would have to deal with the fact that many of there streams are not easily conveyed in a couple sentences.

They have a schedule posted on there website that is converted into your local timezone. It can be exported into different calender apps. They promote the schedule on most streams and podcasts. That's more than enough in my opinion. Not to mention that if you forget to check the schedule or are unable to watch live they have archives of (almost) every stream they have ever done available on the easy allies plays channel.

A lot of the big streamers with youtube channel literally just upload a video saying yo we're live and whatever screen is up. It's like 30 seconds tops.

Like here's some best of. Each of the videos is the full announcement.

Yeah I think people are confused by what these videos actually are. They're not extra work, they're not elaborate produced promos, they're just 30s throwaway videos you record and upload right before the stream starts and delete when the stream ends. Everything is already setup for the stream so you just press a button and have someone say you're live and what you're doing that night. Couldn't be easier.

Would definitely still like to see more produced promos for the big stuff though.

I've been trying to prepare myself for how much nier: automata is going to be disrespected and disregarded lol. I think it's got a very high chance for best music and it should probably win best story (if that's a thing) if Ben and brad really pull for it.

Did anybody watch damianis streams of automata? Did he like It?

I really hope Huber gets to gush about Before the Storm, some of his tweets indicate that he really enjoyed it, so I hope he can push for it to at least be mentioned in some categories.

As if you guys don't know who's going to win, lol.

And i mean no disrespect to the Allies or BOTW, it's just that if you watched enough during the year you already caught conversations and such. The only way it wouldn't be BOTW is some of them go cute so they don't follow everyone else.

People worship Nier's music. Will the rest of EZA handle Yoko Taro's madness?

It should be obvious, the best game should win ;D

I can see Nier Automata getting a pity OST win just so they can shut Ben up about it. I don't think many of the other allies save perhaps Brad liked it or even touched it much.

Take it you haven't watched Frame Trap? The way Blood talked about the soundtrack would make it anything but a pity choice.

I was talking about them liking the game as a whole, not just the soundtrack. Hell, Kyle even admitted to muting the damn thing, lol.

Sending Persona all the good vibes I possibly can. But would ultimately be fine with Zelda or Mario. Someone other than Ben please mention Nier...

Didn't Kyle mute Nier Automata when he was playing it as well? I think I remember him saying that somewhere.

yes... he did...

too intense was the excuse? Ben was visibly upset about it when he mentioned it..

I have to say, I didn't liked it at first but after hearing Become as Gods I have been loving it.

Still, for some reason this game hasn't grown on me yet, I need to come back to it.

Also after playing through Night in the Woods today, I hope it gets some sort of mention.

I asked about this on the patreon post and apparently the results of the goty poll will be presented in ranked order 10-1 so if you voted for a game that's guaranteed to not lose its position you might want to consider changing your vote to a game that's lower down in the rankings that you want to see places higher. Let's rig this election baby!!!

Honestly, #1 is probably going to be BOTW. I'd be kinda shocked if it wasn't, and this is coming from someone who didn't super love BOTW.

Having said that, despite #1 being pretty much know, it'll still be interesting to see them rank the next 9. I can totally see Persona 5 at #2.

I also muted Bloodborne because I found it helped me play better. I think the music is great, but all it did was make me quit faster. I believe Kyle did it for similar reasons.

The patron's choice winner is going to win with about 35% of the votes. Down with plurality voting! Ranked choice voting or bust! (yeah I know, they limited by Patreon's system)
Still, for some reason this game hasn't grown on me yet, I need to come back to it.
If you're still pretty early in the game, just know that a lot of people find it to be a slow burn. Things get bonkers in the second half.

Sorry to weirdly jump into this thread, but this popped up in a search I was doing for something unrelated just now and I wanted to say that this was pretty much my feelings on DDLC, yeah.

It's been really weird to see people praise it so strongly, particularly when I think even within OELVNs alone there's been much better written VNs released in the past was. I found it interesting (and think they did some cool things on a technical level), sure, but not all that great overall.

And after 130 hours the persona 5 credits roll. I thought I'd have it finished last night but the last section went longer than I expected.

My previous persona game I finished was 3 years ago. Given how long they are persona 4 had a number starts but didn't get far before other games showed up.

Great game and a noticeable step up from 3 which had great moments but they hadn't refined the formula. Outside the style, music, dungeons and improved QOL features what really ties this game together and has it rise above most is the cast. It's one of my favorite JRPG parties ever. Especially all the fun banter, people always joking on others, etc. I also think being able to play this in Japanese made me enjoy it more. I think the dub they had was great but it helps me get more invested in the game with the Japanese voices given the overall hook of the game.

Now to watch the spoiler mode!

Possibly. I think there could be a tragic outcome, like them giving best OST to Persona
For me Nier is Best ost but I won't be too upset if persona wins. I will Buy the soundtrack at some point. But after hearing it over 100+ Hours I'll be waiting until later this year to buy it.

It's funny last week I had been playing persona 5 so much that when I was at work the OST would just play in my head using the similar songs that would cover the " mundane " activities like going to school, going to work, etc. it fit pretty well

Now if Mario or Zelda won best OST I would be upset.
