So, back vaguely on-topic...

MAGIC's pre-event press conference is tomorrow, with some loose possibility of something from Shenmue III being shown (new screens most likely). At the very least we should have an idea of the schedule of the event itself, and if Yu is doing a panel at MAGIC or not.

I'm kind of excited, how about you lot?

Yup. Hoping for some gameplay this time around.

Cedric somehow wrangled screens out of YSnet for the 2016 press conference when the prototype had barely started, so hopefully it's not too much trouble to get something.

Makes me wonder if we'll finally see something of Baisha at MAGIC. It's the only major environment we haven't had much of a look at yet... well, not overtly. I've got a feeling we saw one or two sneak peeks in the progress video and screens from Gamescom. I wanna see those Tulous though!

I doubt anything will be presented tommorow for Shenmue III though.

If anything is actually shown I hope the screens don't continue to spark hate like they usually do, I must say Lakshya Digital's work looks great however.

I'm wishing to see more interior locations since I'm more than satisfied with the outdoor environments they have shown previously. They all feel true to the Shenmue universe so do some of the inside areas (Shenhua's house) but it would be nice to see some shops with the return of the chawan sign? :P

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's not a huge deal if nothing comes of it. Even in a worst case scenario where no teases are made and Yu doesn't have a panel at MAGIC, we're still getting something in 39 days.

Really, it's just low-stakes excitement and speculation.

Anyone here been messing around with latest version of demul? Runs Shenmue 1 and 2 beautifully, and I plan to use it (with patched-in widescreen) to play through and stream Shenmue 2 in HD.

However, one of the things I noticed is performance consistency takes a hit when I switch to the "old" dx11 plugin, which is the only way I was getting internal resolution increase. The default doesn't seem to have AA :(

Has anyone figured out how to get AA running with it? I can render the game at 1080p with zero issues, aside from jaggies everywhere. My PC has a GTX 1080ti in it, with a newer i7 CPU.

Maybe I should look into reshade...

I'm curious about Shenhua's house. The way they showed it off as a center point two years ago, it certainly looked nice, but was it meant to suggest it was essentially done? Two years is a long time, is it likely that environment has been altered significantly?

No, it definitely wasn't done.

It looked ahead of everything by comparison mainly because of prominence in early story/gameplay, but also because the location existed in Shenmue II so there was a template of what it should look like to work from. Everything else was done from scratch, and has been iterated on quite a lot since our first really early looks.

At that point of development the prototype had only just gotten rolling, so who knows what changes have been made since. The foliage density alone in Bailu has seen a pretty significant boost from that early build.

Well that's exciting. If it's anything like the early Dreamcast footage to the final product, there could be a lot to look forward to, visually.

My optimism for Shenmue at Monaco is being a bit dampened by Deep Silver, and I don't know if it's justified.

It's like 2 years ago, there was a great feeling, and excitement about what we could see. But now with Deep Silver involved, I feel like chains have been put on what can possibly be shown. It's lost that intimacy feeling 2016 had.

^^^ I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. If they're aiming to release in the next 11 months -- and we have no indication otherwise -- the marketing for this game ought to start to look a little more normal and less behind-the-scenes-y.

Will make for a more successful marketing campaign if they can show us more polished stuff.

I don't consider this a bad thing. I may be in the minority but I honestly wouldn't mind if we saw barely anything. I've been like this since it was funded though. Updates and new media aren't something I look forward to as I'm just happy they're working on the game. Throw in the toxicity associated with previous behind the scenes updates and I'm quite content to see nothing until they start doing proper promo for release.

That's very true guys. Perhaps it's been the amount of bad negativity met with the majority of the updates that has took my happiness and replaced it with trepidations and nerves.

I've loved every update. I am firmly a guy who thanks everyday since the Kickstarter in 2015, for this game to simply exist. Nothing I have seen looked bad, on the contrary, it looked like Shenmue. Felt like Shenmue. The development feels like a Shenmue games development. I know I will love this game, despite it being, looking and feeling possibly different. But I accept that's because it's new tech, and not a Dreamcast game.

I should have went completely dark to enjoy the journey more.

As others here said I don't mind anything that is shown for Shenmue 3 it isn't in the slightest anything bad because in the end: at least it's happening.

There will be those that criticise the controversial nature of this game being a kickstarter, it's quality and responses from the dev team but the truth is none of this will affect the game at all. Support is going strong through the fans every single day and the ones with the positive input make Ys Net and their day better because support is ultimately what they need at the very least.

From everything, the first and few updates Shenmue 3 has blossomed into something of greater scale it is now a passion project with multiple outsiders giving their funding and taking on tasks such as a full fledged promotion team, model artists and much more this is going to be the true sequel to Shenmue 2. The gamescom teaser specifically in August 2017 created much negativity from the media but I was in defense, I absolutely adored every bit of that teaser despite the lack of facial animations, I can understand the struggle to show something amazing to the public but even then I saw Shenmue 3 and it screamed atmosphere. I don't doubt the braniac behind the game Yu Suzuki, 15 years or so prior to the E3 2015 announcement he had everything, every single idea for this game already in his head and all he is doing now is putting them to action. A game developer and pioneer that researches through his own life experience this is going to be a masterpiece in the eyes of every true Shenmue fan. We waited so long, cried and will now enjoy the continuation that we deserved.

Look forward to it!

I usually am someone who goes media blackout on games I strongly look forward to. But Shenmue III and FF7 Remake are two games I just can't help but want to see the latest updates on...FF7 Remake is mainly because it'll be very hard to spoil stuff for me, considering I played the game over 20+ years ago.

With Shenmue III...I've waited long enough. Every update of this game feels like a small victory for me. Hopefully they don't show too much, but just enough to make me feel even better about the game.

I look forward to new media/information about the game all the time but... yeah, there's always a comedown when you see the threads about it on here turn to bloodbaths regularly because of malicious shitposting and pretty overt trolling attempts.

I'd be very happy watching development progress if I just existed in a vacuum away from that crap; which is why I peaced out on GAF after the Gamescom threads got really shitty, and kind of why I was reluctant to join up here too.

There's value in fighting back against the shitposts though, just like there's value in Shenmue III. A lot of critics fall back on hyperbole and ignorance about the development to fuel their arguments, but ultimately they just don't see what we see in Shenmue III. It's always going to be a matter of taste, so it's up to us to present the other side.

There's always going to be those negative people, because it seems it's much easier to troll and hate on something, than it is to actually formulate a real opinion on something. Plus people are far to quick to jump the gun on certain things.

I also feel people tend to notice the negative comments more than the positive ones. We should be focusing on the people who actually had a real thought about the game. There were plenty of positive comments about Shenmue III too.

I agree with this sentiment. The next time something from Shenmue 3 is shown, we should prioritize sharing our own positive reactions, and propel the discussion as much as we can toward what we liked about the material. This would hopefully help at least match any negative reactions and prevent a bad narrative from forming. This is assuming, of course, the material inspires positive feelings, which I think is likely.

I don't blame anybody for not wanting to go into those threads, because it's a real drag if you're otherwise excited by the game or have enjoyed what they've shown so far.

But I dunno, it doesn't feel particularly right if we allow ourselves to be hounded out of the argument. If you don't want to get too far into the nitty gritty, just pick your battles. If you see something said that's factually inaccurate and you can back it up, challenge people on it.

Anyway, onto something potentially more positive.

We're just under 2 and a half hours away from MAGIC's pre-event press conference in Paris. No guarantee of anything showing up, but as we weren't outright told there won't be a Shenmue III tease, there's still a shot. At the very least we should know MAGIC's schedule, and if Yu has a panel or not.

New Shenmue III image. Will replace with a higher res one if it becomes available.

Additionally:

I don't mind honest opinions. What I can't stand are the people who say the games were never good or that the third game is a scam.

Man, I didn't expect we'd even get that first shot today let alone this triple bonanza. Very pleased.

Ryo and Shenhua's models have undergone some serious changes since Gamescom. I kind of liked Ryo's Gamescom model but I can definitely live with this as an improvement. They both look really close to Kenji Miyawaki's art.

The picture of Ryo and Shenhua make it look like they're in love. It's just their postures make it look so. Although the models look much nicer.

Holy shit I think these models are incredible! Ryo looks like he could actually be 18 (unlike the first two games), and Shenhua's looking much closer to her original self. Very welcome changes in my opinion.

And do I even need to say anything about the environments?

I like Ryo's look but he has certainly lost that serious face he had before. His hairstyle still has that classic Hazuki spike which is good. Shenhua's face has seen massive change for the better now, she's more detailed aswell. The environments are literally Shenmue.

Mild self-promotion of a few easter eggs I spotted in the new screens. I didn't make these tweets though, haha. Promise!

Wow. The new screen showing off the updated models is really great.

Recently, I've been trying to visualize the controls for Shenmue 3 and how the original controls could be translated with modern sensibilities. It's clear by the new environmental screens that there will be plenty of storefronts to peruse. A large part of what made Shenmue interesting to me was the way it utilized old fashioned detective work. Hitting the streets, jotting down notes while searching for the next local to further your investigation. The games controls reflect this investigation mentality. One trigger is used to move in a fixed direction like a auto-pilot leaving the analog stick available to move Ryo's head around a visual cone and craning his neck to inspect the buildings, signs and passerby's. While the other trigger is used as a "focus" both as a zoom that seamlessly transitions to a first person viewpoint and a lock-on to prompt deeper interaction with people and objects. If these camera controls were replaced in favor of a full 360 degree camera I think it would lose the feeling of a first hand account. The perception of seeing what your character does in relation to their surroundings disappears in favor of a more omnipotent ability to see all around yourself and lessening the sense of being an eye witness. It seems like a small detail but with Shenmue being as entrenched in immersion as it is, this would likely break it.
What do all of you think?

New screens look all kinds of beautiful and amazing and show massive improvement. Looks like Yu and his ex-AM2 team are going to deliver.

Hopefully this'll shift the momentum of the Shenmue 3 narrative in to something more positive and optimistic. These screens are really promising.

I will say it is probably more immersive if one of the sticks moves Ryo's head. I remember Heavy Rain controlling in that fashion too, and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully they can resolve in the tankiness of movement that tends to be involved in control scheme's like that.

Or they can make everyone happy and implement the old way of controlling him, and also adding in a more modern control scheme.

We've got extra shoulder buttons now.
Maybe the stick moves the camera but when a shoulder button is held it then moves his head...?
R3 moves in and out of FPV.

I love the updated look for Shenhua. She looks so much better now. As for Ryo my only issues with the gamescom model was the proportion of his head, neck and body seemed a little off, but he looked just like he did in the DC days which is to say real good. The new one though I think I like even more. He looks a lot more like the concept art. Especially how his hair looks.

I'm glad to see the game making steady improvements. Looking forward to seeing more.
