A former, female employee commented on Le Monde's article:

you're posting on an english forum

Being a woman and having worked in this studio for several years I think that the part of the investigation on the atmosphere and the "toxic culture" of the studio echoes a particular core of people. The working conditions are indeed very harsh but the atmosphere in the team is precisely what has allowed many employees to stay longer than a year or two and support extremely demanding production rates.

Sounding more and more like Sony will be dropping them after Detroit. The game is going to get critically panned with this context.

Hopefully if Sony does drop them, they invest the money into Until Dawn devs instead.

Dude pulled the "I have a black friend" card with Jesse Williams. And yeah, if you see his work you can believe all of this.

I highly, highly doubt Sony will ever work with QD again.
Same sentiment here, their 3 game contract will be up and with these allegations and other things about the studio I highly doubt they will sign another game. A good thing will be to sign Dontnod or Supermassive for these kinds of games.

I mean, obviously the degree of fuckery is shocking, but I'm not at all surprised that the fuckery is there in the first place.

Sounds more like trying hard to find a "valid" argument why buying it doesn't make you a bad person.

Taking this line I hope you don't watch any more movies, or buy pretty much anything considering Hollywood is shown to be a disgusting place as well as most big businesses that treat employees like shit, this isn't something specific to the gaming industry, its unfortunately a pretty mass scale issue.

Photomontages injurieux, semaines de 60 heures, management pressant... plusieurs anciens salariés dénoncent les dérives du studio du français David Cage, le « Godard du pixel ».
This is the most insulting thing I've read in a while.

'tain, ces noms de fin de race. Quelle marrade.

I don't even get the Nazi 'joke'. What is the joke? That particular employee being far right and the photoshopper making fun of the employee for that ?

So if I understand you correctly, it's possible these people are just some disgruntled ex-employees venting accusations against QD out of context?
Yes and no.
No, cause as i said before i don't want to minimize the situation, and i don't want to say what this people claim is false.

Yes because in wider terms , it's impossibile in a larger environment and lot of workers, no one have some issue with others, a colleague or a manager, even the boss. There are those who will say these are some jokes and just few didn't understand, and those who will claim the entire company is rotten.

Oh I'm quite aware that I have to do mental gymnastics to justify some of my media consumption. I'm just point blank highlighting the reality of it.

Oh ok. The Nazi jokes and abusive shit is just inside jokes and the company had done a terrible job in explaining that to new people.

Got it. Thanks for the explanation.

Wow. David Cage had several options on how to react to the situation and he chose one that ensures he won't see the good ending.

Being born in Morocco, I hear the joke David Cage did quite often. I've worked for 2 gaming companies (France & Germany), and I can't count the number of jokes like that I heard.
People think it's a joke, it's innocent, it's funny - but it's still racist and reinforcing the cliches.

As for David Cage, it is absolutely not surprising to see this, I know "don't judge a book by its cover", but most of his interviews and his demeanor were never good news.

In a company, you have a few employees (approx 5%) that are leaders/have some defined values and lead the pack. In the case of QD, if the leading employees are toxic as fuck, no wonder it has a massive impact on the rest.

Edit: regarding his "judge my work" answer, it is laughable and reminds me a bad joke in French about how supporters of the far right aren't racist because they know the clerk of a store who is arab/black.

David Cage always comes across as entirely ignorant and obnoxious in interviews, so it wouldn't surprise me if this toxicity releases in to the working atmosphere around him.

I'd like to say I'm surprised. However judging by how fucking tone deaf he always is when people call out his work the fact these kind of "jokes" get floated around the workplace isn't very surprising at all.

While I absolutely hate everything David Cage has ever made, I respect him as a man with a vision. The kind of work he does, much like any "visionary" body of work, is exclusively born out of chaos. That the working environment in Quantic Dream is fucked up should come as a surprise to no-one. Look at Rockstar, look at Irrational, look at the making of any classic album, film or book. Works driven by powerful people with singular visions are fueled by insanity. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but always to the detriment of the people the creator surrounds himself with.

As for the racist and homophobic remarks, I have no idea. Maybe DC is just a huge asshole.

Mediapart draws an interesting portrayal of David Cage, a bit more qualified than you'd expect (depending on who's talking, obviously)

https://www.mediapart.fr/journal/ec...tre-les-errements-d-une-pepite?page_article=3

Did a quick translation:

Indeed, most of the company's life revolves around the game maker [David Cage], who is a majority shareholder (he owns more than 60% of the capital) and who, as the main author, takes the big decisions regarding their games. Many former employees describe David Cage as inhabited by his projects, to the point that he sometimes forgets the human beings working around him. "To him, people are just tools, not individuals, and their talent is not regarded as a benefit. This is exhausting. They [the QD employees] are depressed", says Elise [they changed the names of some speakers]. The word "tyrannic" comes up often when describing his professional behavior, and just as often opposed to his open and friendly character whenever the topic is not video game creation.

Obviously this portrayal doesn't please the one concerned. "If I wanted to work like that, I could: I'm a majority shareholder in this company, I'm the president, I've directed games for twenty years, the publishers we are working with are there because they are interested in my work. But it's ridiculous. I'm working with a group of people of all origins, and the team takes collegiate decisions. Intellectually speaking, I cannot take hundreds of decisions alone", he insists. He, however, admits taking "strategic decisions, directions" on his own: "If there are things to do or not do in the game, it's my role, my responsibility to say it."

Staff representatives agree with their CEO: "We can confirm the fact that the company works according to the direction given by David Cage. But it would be false to say that managers or leads have no decision-making power, if only in terms of recruitment, where David Cage almost never steps in, unless for specific directing or artistic positions. He is not in charge of human management within the services", they explain.

It is, however, hard to deny that not everyone can work with him. When development started on the Detroit game, in 2012 and 2013, his company hired several "stars" from the industry, some of them from other countries. It didn't work out. "These people, these major leads... It couldn't work", an employee recalls. "For David, it's impossible to work with people with a strong personality. He absolutely needs to be in control." The memory of the turbulent, short-lived presence of one veteran director left traces: "It ended badly because this director knew what he wanted, and he was experienced in motion capture. And we had the feeling that David had his baby taken away from him. He rejected a lot of things." The director didn't stay, and he wasn't the only one.

This, im brazilian and every time i travelled, mainly US, i heard that old joke of "so, do you live in a forest and have a monkey?"

Its insulting and a disgusting thing to do.

But to stay on topic, well, from what i read it seems like 70% of big game companys have toxic eviromments, its a inssue that needs to be put in check, and publishers are responsable for this.

I think that most gaming companies are toxic because managers aren't proper managers. They have been put there due to an accomplishment in game development or something else, not because of their prowess as managers. Of course, some are REALLY good, but it's not the vast majority.

< Some employees denounced racist or homophobic jokes inside the teams or even inside the top management. One of them describe a scene where, after watching a video of a recorded robbery, David Cage jokingly asked an employee from Tunisia "Are they one of your cousins?". David Cage responded "You want to talk homophobia? We work with Ellen Page who is fighting for LGBT rights. We are working with Jesse Williams about civil rights in the USA. Judge my work.">

So are you alt-right or liberal, Cage?

It doesn't matter ultimately, if these statement amount to be true, you deserve to be called out for these garbage views.

Some are saying that Sony will cut ties with QD. Consider that there is no way Sony are not 100% aware about the allegations against Rockstar Games including this little gem:

"Sam Houser orchestrated and encouraged a company culture involving strip clubs, personal photography of employees in sexually compromising positions, and other conduct grossly in violation of standard workplace norms."

https://www.polygon.com/2016/4/14/11428072/the-great-grand-theft-auto-lawsuit-explained

Yet Sony has signed a marketing deal for Red Dead Redemption 2. Primarily developed by Rockstar San Diego presumably, which is an absolute hellhole of a developer if Glassdoor is to be believed. "Rockstar is a bad company run by sociopaths" is not exactly a controversial viewpoint. But there is zero chance Sony will wash their hands of Red Dead Redemption 2. I honestly don't think much will come of this. Unfortunately, employee welfare is a pretty low priority in gaming, and very quickly forgotten.

Not saying Sony's behaviour is/will be right, but there's a ton of a difference between these two situations: RDR2 will no doubt sell tens of millions of games and be a very good game, while Detroit probably will struggle to sell enough to justify the cost and won't be much of a game if it's anything like the previous two. Plus, I believe QD simply is much more identified as being king of a Sony company (and yes, I know they're not owned by them), so any bad PR they're generating is coming back to them much more directly than whatever stuff Rockstar is up to.

So what I'm trying to say: Kepping a deal with Rockstar is surely much more important for Sony than keeping QD on payroll.
