Can't see any shit storm. The total market cap has risen 50b in the past day so far. It's just not going into coins that you (we) want it to. :(
I'd call that a shitstorm.

Looking at ETH, I think I'll start getting more of them over the course of the year and just let them sit in my Ledger. Will wait for a dip.

I needed some extra money this week, so I sold some ETH and BTC. Not much. I'll buy back in for some ETH in the near future I think. Probably not BTC though.

Sucks that Coinbase won't transfer the money to my bank till Friday.

So, after some days of doing a bit of research on fast transactions coins ( it might have been discussed in the past, but... ). My background is being a software engineer. When doing research I check tech stuff. I'm learning now about TA, so any recommendation is welcome :

XRB : Seems a solid team, dedicated to the tech. They have had several tech issues last weeks, but since they are WIP on they project this is totally normal. They don't do much PR that could help pump his coin, which I'm fine with it. I wouldn't invest on it at this point of time for the current price point, but keep an eye on it.

Flash : A favourite of era. I could not get to look into the code yet, but at least the community is active, and they know how to handle issues in terms of PR. It tries to solve the same problem as XRB, but being a much smaller player in the market so far. They shall have announcements soon, so keep an eye on it also. Aside from ERA, I haven't heard many people discussing about it, so it can be a hidden diamond.

Both coins can be affected if BTC pulls out Lightning Network. But if that happens or not, will probably affect the entire market, as people is realizing that BTC doesn't not scale well enough to be a competitor of other money transfer systems ( what does matter for most of the mainstream ).

Also, I would like some recommendations to start doing research on private coins. I know monero is the leader so far, but other suggestions would be appreciated.

NEO and ETH graphs have been identical in recent times. Jumped on NEO because of the GAS production and mid-term teething issues of ETH moving to PoS. Plan to hodl for 2018.

SUB moved into a deeper correction. Thought it bounced, but it was a fakeout... Not interested in going lower than 13500 resistance pls hold.

All of my coins are currently in the green, except for COLX, which I only put like 8% of my portfolio into anyway.

I'm very pleased with ETH's performance. I bought in around US$700, so I've nearly doubled my original investment.

Pretty much all the funding options for QuadrigaCX are offline. So annoying now that I actually have money to put into my account. Now I get to watch and pray the transfer process from another exchange is fast-ish. :/

Well transferred ETH out of Binance last night. Waited a bit, decided to go to sleep. Now 12 hours later still shows as processing, No transaction ID. Cryptopia always this slow with Withdrawals lately? Thanks
I transfered some ETH from Cryptopia last week and it took more than 24 hours. Seems to me Cryptopia is to blame and not ETH, that's why you don't get any TransID. Just wait and it'll happen, don't worry :) (And ETH is strong today, so you're still making profit while you wait !)

Alright. So I'm looking to get into the altcoin game. Anyone know what the best sources of information for someone starting from basically zero are? Where to buy, What coin pairs to buy with (I assume ETH/LTC because of lower fees), Even some ideas of coins to begin researching would be helpful since all I pretty much know about are PIRL, Ripple and RaiBlocks.

Coinmarketcap is a key resource. Outside of the websites for the coins themselves and their forums/chats (which CMC links to), I don't know what else people use. You can check social media for individual coins you're interested in for their news updates too.

I would look into XLM - connection with IBM, maybe the best team involved, guy from Ripple and Mt.Gox on the team, FairX coming out, etc.
I like POE even tho it hasn't shown much movement lately. Many partnerships including wordpress rolling out soon
NEO, VEN, REQ all worth looking into imo. VEN might be the next NEO - being rebranded soon, will generate Thor if you hold it, partnerships under NDA, etc.

Wrong thread...

But now that I'm here, it looks like COLX and FLASH and making small recoveries. Let's see if they last.

Just bought one ETH worth of VEN. Seems like a coin/token with great utility potential and some reputable backers.

As for Exchanges, its looking like a lot of altcoins are on Cryptopia and Binance. Is there anything I need to know about these exchanges... any quirks I should look out for?

Awesome. I've bookmarked that and I will be checking it out. Thanks

White paper, Roadmap, legit exchange listing. Makes me realize how much room for growth COLX still has. Hodl regardless of temporary drops!

COLX community management: here's a transparent look at our roadmap and goals

Flash is starting to test my patience. Does anyone have a link to their roadmap? Trying to convince myself there's a reason to keep holding

I am getting wrecked by flash, colx, and xlm right now. Wish I could have gotten in on cheaper ven. Oh well. I've still doubled my money in a month, which good for an idiot like me.

I'm surprised it took COLX this long to dip with how long CoinsMarkets was down.

VEN should be going up all the way to the rebrand (I hope), there may be a drop on monday when people think that the rebrand was supposed to happen (and didn't get the memo) but after that, gradual gains till the rebrand in Feb.

Take with as many grains of salt you need though.

Long time stock market investor, just got into crypto in December. I've learned a lot over the past month, but not sure if my strategy is carrying over well from stocks or not. Are you all diversifying or concentrating your positions on the few projects you believe in? I've started with about 10k invested across approximately 10 coins, thinking that due to it being a nascent technology most will fail, and casting a wide net gives me a better chance. I'm starting to rethink that though after seeing Ethereum destroy everything over the past week, and i'm thinking i may be better off consolidating my position into the strongest cryptos. Curious what you all think? I'm holding ETH, BTC, XLM, VEN, NEO, ICX, ARK, QSP, SUB, LINK.

I go heavy on a coin I am highly confident has strong growth potential (first Ripple, now VEN), and have smaller amounts distributed to other things to at least partly catch growth in other areas. Ideally the side ones grow enough to help feed the main one, though that hasn't been very true lately with little or negative growth for a number of them. I'm hoping by the time VEN stabilizes at a high level, a new coin will appear that I can reliably go heavy on as well. I'm not sure enough of any others at the moment though.

That's a super solid selection, and about what I'm looking at when I'll move to a more future-proof portfolio instead of playing with small market caps. My list is exactly like yours minus BTC and QSP, and plus REQ and ENG.

Remember though that a lot of the market moves together, so being too diversified just becomes too complicated with different wallets etc. compared to any excess risk adjusted return.

I've already generated enough gain where I've made back my initial investment so at this point I'm going all in placing a few thousand into certain small cap coins with very good potential and hoping they go 5x or so in short term. Then I sell maybe half of that gain and hold the rest. So far, things worked out very well doing this with Flash as a first go with this strategy. Yes, it's a ton more risky, but I'm what I'm being risky with is only the gains I've made - so I don't really care. If everything went to shit next week and all my ALTS died, I would be able to net all those short term capital losses against gains and I would come out not having to really pay much tax overall.

I would shave it down to 5 personally. But that is an amazing set of choices you have. I personally like consolidating though, I would stick with the first 5, which are all solid.

I think I'm gonna go all in on IOTA, XRB, XYB, and VEN, and Ripple.

They've shown the most consistency.

Worst thing I"ll have to do is payback $5000 like a student loan.

I've had my Coinbase account for a couple weeks but didn't buy in anything until a few days ago. I purchased a LiteCoin on the 10th but it still shows as pending, is this normal?

I was also able to finally sneak into registering with Binance which is a bit overwhelming at first but I want to start using it, but I can't yet because above.
