That's expensive. Glad I bought it on Steam.

Great game though and fits portable gameplay perfectly.

Tips: always be extra careful and never too cocky. But at the same time hit hard because that's the best strategy. Long battles WILL get your party whipped.

Wasn't there information pointing towards a physical release at some point? I'd love to jump in on day one, but if there's a chance to get a game card I'm definitely holding off until that comes along.

I started playing this one on PC and stopped after four hours as soon as they announced it for Switch because I wanted to experience it there in handheld mode.

Would you recommend buying the main game and Crimson Court at the same time or play the DLC after some good hours into the game?

Not seeing the value in this without the DLC added, it just feels wrong to me. I haven't played the game but I heard the randomness is extremely frustrating hope it does okay though.

Randomness is rarely the problem, unless you get super unlucky. The much bigger problem is that many others don't run away/cancel the mission when they should and taking huge risks as a result.

Everything in this game is a calculated risk, including that (since you are more likely to develop bad Quirks that way).

Any news about the controls? PS4 was a nightmare. Does it use the touch screen?

It comes all down to management. It is easy to screw up but it is 90% up to your decision making that thinks go really bad.

Often only the boss quests are a real challenge and can wipe you somewhat reliably if you don´t know what you are going up against. The first time you do something your investment is rather small because of the level system, therefor the punishment is limited. By the point you have some developed party members you are more experienced with the systems. At least it was like that during my time playing it.^^

I too would like to know if it is recommended to buy the dlc at the star. I only played the game during EA when it came out.

No review so far, and I don't think we can expect any before the release date proper. So, sadly, it may be a better idea to hold on your purchase and wait for people's opinions. I'm curious to see if the touch-screen works, it would make party management easier.

A lot agree that the DLC can be a little hard at the beginning. It also introduces a new mechanic which may be a tad annoying to handle when you discover the game. Thanksfully, I think you can activate the DLC on your current save whenever you want.

Should really jump back into this and play the DLC. Got to the endgame but then got hooked on Baertaffy playing Crimson Court and stopped playing myself.

Touch screen support is in:

Red Hook Studios says that Darkest Dungeon on Switch will support both touchscreen and standard controls, and will cost $24.99 USD, as is the case on Steam and PSN.

Also, the DLC you can turn on and off individual components. So with Crimson Court you can enable the new class and the base building addition (which is really nice), but disable the vampire/blood stuff until you're ready, up to you. I've read a lot of the initial criticism comes from before the tweaks, and actually the vampire/blood aspect actually makes your party quite OP truthfully, and is easy to manage. I guess it depends on your position in the game and your knowledge of how to exploit the various systems to your favor.

Anyway, with touch support, it should help the controls, for handheld gameplay anyway.

Damn, I thought the DLC was included, or at least part of it, since it was a late release.
I will wait before buying then. Edit to clairfy: I already have the game, but even for newcomers, part of the DLC should have been included at that price and that time.

Such a great game, one of those I keep coming back to randomly throughout the years. Will be buying it yet again for the Switch. I want this game portable so bad, but the Vita version was just too small for me to really enjoy it on that platform.

Haven't played darkest dungeon yet but I've always wanted to check it out. Switch seems like the perfect place to jump in!

I mean, this is what it costs across platforms. It also goes on sale on occasion so I am sure you will get it later. I especially understand for those who'll be double or triple dipping.

Not at this levels here yet, but I am already seeing People act like A: Porting is free / low cost and B: Devs shouldn't charge for what they believe what their software is worth.

price is always a valid point of discussion.

this is an games enthusiast forum, of course we're gonna talk pricing.

personally, I wish they threw all the DLC on there and charged $30.

It makes sense to wait on picking it up if you already owned/played the game, but it doesn't make sense for them to release it cheaper on a new platform than it is on older platforms to me.

There's a rumored bundle physical release coming in March, who knows if it's true or not. It won't be cheaper though, but it will be a bundle (and it won't be a definitive bundle either, since it's very doubtful it would have the upcoming third DLC).

I'm sure the game will go on sale at some point, so if it's just too expensive, then sure, wait. It is like a 50-100+ hour game though, so there's that to consider if you're new. I'm pretty excited to pick it up at release, and I'm sure lots of other people are as well, and in general indies tend to sell pretty well on Switch, so I think it's smart to release it at a regular price - it's not like PC where if something doesn't release on sale or for much cheaper it doesn't sell. Still, I do hope they have a sale in the near future for those holding off because of the price, but just don't expect it to be $5 like on iOS.

It's not going to go on sale for less than $20 this year so enjoy waiting. I base that on Switch eShop sale trends.

I have it on PS4/Vita and iPad and it's definitely much better with touch controls. The black bars don't bother me, it's the same amount of visible/playable screen area as 16:9, I don't know why people hate letterboxing so much. It's still a bigger presentation than the Switch's screen.

If they do a bundle and it goes on sale I *may* triple dip but honestly I'm not sure I want to start over a third time.

Awesome! But I'm used to seeing the game for $10, so I'm going to wait.

That's the issue with all these latter-day Switch ports. You can get the same game for often much cheaper on other platforms.

Even when the game retails for the same price, other platforms like PSN will put the game on sale for a much bigger discount than the eShop will.

How were they a nightmare? I'm tempted to get it on sale on the PSN store.

For a more nuanced answer google: darkest dungeon ps4 control scheme

My answer:

Designed for keyboard and mouse. You have to press the trigger buttons while navigating menus. There are instances as well where you use buttons to jump between menus and then you select with the stick if I remember correctly. Everything on a kind of muddy UI.
I think you could get used to it but it takes time that I didn't want to put in.

I'm supposedly a very patient person and the premises of the game are wonderful for me as a Call of Cthulhu player (rpg). Loads of interesting mechanics.
But the control scheme felt so insulting that I stopped playing.

I'd rather buy the game again for a different platform than play it on ps4 again.

Please, tell where I said they couldn't discuss it, in fact I was joining the discussion. I believe I was making a point about their points some of the false equivalencies.

Looking forward to this, hopefully the touch controls make all the difference, and there's no weird Switch issues (like really bad load times, which I suppose the video would show).

I'm really interested in the game except for procedurally generated dungeons. Sounds like the dungeons are probably dull as sin.

I kept holding off getting this game, was gonna get on my tablet, then Vita, but now it's on Switch I have no reason to not get it. Can't wait to try it out later when I get done with Resident Evil Revelations 2.

The dungeons themselves aren't the focus, the challenges inside are. They can get relatively big with many twists and turns but you're always shown walking in a straight line.

Contrary to all the tales about dreadful console controls in this thread this Kotaku article actually claims the Switch control scheme is best of both worlds.

What makes Darkest Dungeon on the Switch ideal isn't just the touch controls, but being able to switch between touch screen controls and the Joy-Con at will. There are times when using a controller to navigate your options just make more sense. In the dungeon, you can select which room you're going to by flicking a direction on the right stick, and then move your party forward by pushing the left stick. But if you see a trap or need to loot something, you can switch right into using the touch screen.

The biggest problem this game has right now is it is only 720p docked. They need to make it 1080p, it looks bad docked. And the Switch is absolutely capable of outputting this game at 1080p.

They also could use to increase the font size slightly more, but that will probably take a bit of work. Still, it's worth doing imo.

Handheld is the way to go, game feels great on the Switch in portable mode.

So far it seems it's actually a good port. Think it's worth buying the ancestral bundle or do i just buy the base game? I already played a fair bit on pc, but never got to far into the game.

Does DD have a way to turn off its expansion packs, like XCOM? I hear the Crimson Court makes the game very hard (harder than usual, at least) for a new player.

I played this on pc with a 360 controller and it was fine. Don't let the guff about controls dissuade you.
