I feel like the people upset that the games are getting re-released on the Switch haven't really given a good reason to why its bad. Like, even if you bought and played the game before how does the re-release actively make your experience with other new games worse? The only thing I can think of is the possibility of stealing developer resources from new games being developed but ports do not take as much work and time as other games and often times these ports are outsourced to other companies anyway.

It's partially that and partially that they would prefer more actual new games released in the meantime.

I'm not too interested in buying games I've already played, with three key exceptions:

The Wonderful 101
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Okami

I'd shell out for these 3 games easy peasy.

I'm in for Bayo 2 and TWEWY also.

Your original post was "If Nintendo's 2018 Switch plans are ports, ports, and more ports, then that's pretty disappointing after how great 2017 was for it."

I asked you to count the amount of ports from Nintendo.
Irrelevant if the non-ports are not coming out in 2018 aka this year, aka the year that I'm talking about.

Not sure what point your trying to make, but it isn't a good one.

Nintendo handhelds have always had tons of ports/reworks of older games, so it's natural that Switch does the same.

I don't mind ports, but i am pissed that one announcement of the direct was not localization of Monster Hunter XX...like that's an easy localization

Kid Icarus: Uprising
Sakurai did too good of a job really making a brand new IP for that just to lay dormant. The dual sticks and gyro/IR aiming could address the control issues. A great cast of characters with exciting gameplay... it's right there Nintendo. Just pick it up again!

Im not annoyed at the ports, im annoyed it's not ones I actually want, where is my Zelda Majora's Mask and Ocarina of time Remake Bundle? Seem to be more willing to port WiiU games than 3DS, not that surprising considering how awful WiiU numbers were...

For me, above all else, the Switch is a dream RPG machine. TV for the cinematic moments, portable for the monotonous grind. Whenever I sat down to progress through Persona 5 and instead ended up tolling away in Momentos, I just thought to myself, "if only, if only..." So, for instance, I'm holding out to see whether Square will release the FFIX and FFXII remasters on Switch before I buy.

I think the gulf between the 3DS and the Switch is also a factor. Only one screen, some games require more precise touch controls that maybe can't be replicated with the pointer (e.g., tracing your way out of a map in a Layton game), and of course the resolution and power. OoT and MM on the 3DS look good... for 3DS games. Grezzo did a good job of trying to match the original art, but it's still a 3DS game.

Seriously. It's one of those "like a trilogy of games in one" titles. (Actually, all 3 of the titles I pointed out are like that, maybe why I love them all so). The writing is so top notch. So many twists and turns and great characters.

Plus there's the whole multiplayer mode! On switch that could totally have a new lease on life that being stuck on an exclusively handheld system never really allowed it.

I'm very happy they are doing it. I was really tempted to buy a used WiiU after the Switch price reveal because I really want to play WiiU games and I think Switch is expensive. My wife gave me a price range for a used WiiU, anything over that price range is a NO for her and said I should just a buy Switch. Couldn't find a WiiU in her price range so I bought Switch when MK8D was released.

Every time I'm amazed that I'm playing a home console quality game (botw,smo,splatoon2,xb2) I thank her for pushing me to buy a Switch instead of a WiiU. Now with all these ports getting announced, I made a really good choice (well my wife did lol).

The Wii U had an amazing set of games that dererve to be played by the much larger Switch player base. Personally I'm also looking forward to playing these games in handheld mode and I'll be spreading knowledge of these games like a damn religion :) Just need that Captain Toad and W101 and I'll be a really happy little kitten.

Here's hoping for Mario Maker Switch, although the lack of touch control (in docked mode, at least) means making levels will be sloppier unless they manage to desgin an editor focused mainly on gamepad controls.

Spent countless hours on WiiU designing levels and playing great levels made by the community, a bigger playerbase wluld result in an even more active community.

Ports are essential for any new modern system. Modern gaming does not have the luxury of experimentation for random new IP's (people just do not invest in them, but rather buy sequels to IP's they are familiar with...with few exceptions), and a plethora of them, to fill out every calendar year. Ever since 7th gen, launches/ first couple of years have been riddled with ports, and it's only going to get worse as the generations move forward.

From a devils advocate point of view, we as enthusiasts, probably have played a good chunk of those games. However, not everyone keeps up with every release (even us enthusiasts, just not enough time in the year to play everything), and with the attractive proposition that the Switch offers, these games can be played by people who view these ports as brand new experiences, rather than rehashed ones. Take me for instance, I have never played Skyrim. Missed my chance back then, and with the remaster. With how busy am I nowadays, the Skyrim port on Switch is looking like a good deal, not a negative.

In my opinion, I just think these are a few titles Nintendo threw at us to keep us from running down their doors. There will probably be more 3rd party titles, some original and some ports, and most importantly...Nintendo's offerings.

What you actually wrote is irrelevant, noted. For the new goalpost:

Kirby Star Allies- coming March 16

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze- coming May 04

Mario Tennis Aces - coming Spring 2018
https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/mario-tennis-aces-switch

Seriously, how can you watch a 15 minutes video about new games for the first few months of the year see 2 new games and 1 port for that timeframe and conclude ports, ports, ports and no new games for 2018?

Like... how?

They are not going to waste the money on a bigger Switch card to fit both games on this remaster that isn't going to move a ton of units, it'd be stupid of Nintendo to do that.
We don't know how many units this is going to sell.

Look at XV2. it just moved 500K.

Angola / Zaire border region.
It would be nice if the ports and smaller first-party games were supplements to the first-party heavy hitters, like we saw in 2017. Instead, ports and smaller games seem to be the main event in 2018, at least for H1.

That being said I would cry tears of joy if Smash 4 and Mario 3D World made it over.

Sorry you had trouble reading my original post. Reading comprehension doesn't come easy for some.

As to your question, it's simple. Two new games compared to a flood of ports. It's pretty obvious Nintendo is going to be using a ridiculous number of ports as a crutch. Mario Tennis and Kirby are hardly on the level of the new games that came out on the Switch in 2017.

So the new goalpost is Kirby and Mario Tennis are not on the same level as 2 of the 3 greatest games of this generation(third one is GTA V, a port)? Instead of ports, ports, ports and no new games?

Okay.

I thought this was going to be a thread about old games we would be interested in seeing on the Switch. I'm still going to pretend like it is.

Compilations:
Earthbound Trilogy (IT COULD HAPPEN OK)
Pushmo Collection
Boxboy Collection
CHIBI ROBO COLLECTION

Remakes/Remasters:
Paper Mario
3D Land + World
Galaxy 1+2
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl

Ports:
Ultra Street Fighter IV (not $40 please)
Muramasa Rebirth (any good Vita title could jump to the Switch and gain a new audience in my mind)
Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions
Persona 5 DX (the eventual re-release ala FES and Golden)
Yoshi's Woolly World (3DS features included)
Any indie (FTL, Slime Rancher, Spelunky etc.)

Virtual Console:
Everything from NES to Wii, along with GB to DS. Sega, SNK, Hudson etc. can also join the fun.

I definitely get the disdain for the sheer amount of ports considering the Switch was supposed to be the Voltron of Nintendo where the console and handheld teams come together to create a first party output the likes of which the world has never seen. But these things take time. For the first time in a long time, there are actually NUMEROUS third party games I want for a Nintendo console. I think I bought one third party game for the Wii U, not counting VC titles.

I think most of us expected that 2018 would not compare to what we got in 2017, but I still think we have some big titles coming this year and the Switch gets more and more appealing as third parties start to jump on.

I skipped Wii U, so I'm cool with it. I loved finally getting to play MK8, and was hoping for Wooly World and Captain Toad. I don't think we'll get the former since there's a new Yoshi game coming, but hopefully the latter at some point. I want to be excited about Tropical Freeze after hearing so many great things about it, but I found DKC Returns really difficult honestly.

Aren't there already a few Switch games that utilize pointer controls when docked? I could see them going with that approach for sure.

I'm really happy with the ports, having 1 Nintendo system with there greatest library of games from across the years will make it an amazing system to own.

I just hope they don't stop at Wii U, I want GC, Wii and 3DS games jazzed up, with refined controls and any issues ironed out.

Pretty okay with this.

With so many people missing out on Wii U, several games didn't receive that big spotlight. Hyrule Warriors port has some insane value for example.

Xenoblade Chronicles X really seems like a shoo-in for a port. A ton of money and effort clearly went into the game. Nintendo should give it a second chance on Switch where it'll have a bigger audience to enjoy it, especially after Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

And while they probably wouldn't do this since they like to charge for things individually, a two-in-one game featuring 3D World and Captain Toad would be thematically cohesive (one being a spinoff of the other) AND an amazing value.

Afew games i think that will be perfect for the Switch

Rivals of Aether
Junk Jack
Terraria
Starbound
Danganronpa series
Steins Gate series
Hotline Miami series
Digimon Story series
Salt and Sanctuary
Paladins (game literally on lower end machines)
Don't Starve

I particularly think Junk Jack will do very well on the Switch.

But i really want that elusive Smash Brothers 4 port.

i would like a fallout new vegas port, but since that game is a bit problematic and made by obsidian i dont think it will happen. so, you guys would prefer a (probably) very scaled down version of fallout 4 or a fallout 3 special edition? a pack of 3 and new vegas would be great but i doubt it can fit in a single cart. what do you guys think?

As far as ports vs. sequels, I'm fall into these camps:

Wii-U Ports I would like to see:
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  • The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X
Third Party Ports/Remasters I'd like to see:
  • Catherine
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Okami
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • South Park: Fractured But Whole
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth
Indie/Digital Games:
  • Freedom Planet
  • Guacamelee
  • Inside
  • Limbo
  • Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
Proper Sequels I'd like to See:
  • Captain Toad
  • Star Fox
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Super Smash Bros

If we can get the 3DS and Wii U pipeline flowing faster that'd be aces. And if the GameCube remaster machine would get started, that'd be pretty great too.

Also Collections. Collections Collections Collections.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Tellius. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Archanea. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Jugdral. Baten Kaitos Collection. Paper Mario Collection.

Also, I will even buy your late ports of flops like Mass Effect Andromeda if they are $40 or less.

Id really appreciate if Kid Icarus Uprising got a new life on Switch. I doubt it'll happen though.

It seems like Smash will be a Splatoon 2 situation. Most of the assets may be carried over into a new game. Its an interesting thought because Smash 4 with a handful of new stages and characters would be an enhanced port for me. Ether way, I see that coming by end of 2018.

The 2 Zelda games should make it over without issue. Nintendo will space that out to fill the year schedule.

I can see GTAV coming. Rockstar has sold a shitton of that game, why not sell more. Thats also a E3 type surprise. DBFighterZ should be here by end of 2018. Letting that slip to 2019 is a mistake. Unless something has gone wrong, Wolfenstein should be here before E3. Id be intrigued if they bring The New Order over as well, why not?

I think if Nintendo can grab things like MGS HD Collection and Kingdom Hearts 1+2 HD / BBS + DDD then they would really be talking with cash. They have the juice, I wanna see Nintendo get super aggressive with it.

Im leaving these predictions for posterity so I can come back and say ha, I said it! lol

I will never understand people's bizarre and unrealistic expectations of ports to Nintendo consoles. Here are some things I've noticed that annoy the hell out of me:

  1. Incessantly port beg for a game and then come up with every excuse under the sun to not buy said port. Why do people do this? You can't have third party support and then not buy them when they come out.
  2. Why do people always expect Nintendo exclusive content for ports? Do Xbox fans ask for Master Chief for the Xbox version of Overwatch? Or a Fable costume in Assassin's Creed?
  3. People always love to trot out the fact that the Wii U was a failure as if it's a revelation only they've had. Why do people then go on and get angry when Wii U games are ported to the Switch?

Nintendo clearly has gaps to fill in its release schedule, and ports are a decent way to do that. Still, Mario Tennis and Kirby being the only announced Q1 and Q2 games that are actually new is kind of a bummer. Ports are nice and all, but I can see why people are upset that those holes are there in the first place. I for one will be scooping up Bayo 1+2, and Tropical Freeze, and I'll be very happy with them.

I mainly just want all the Zelda remasters/remakes to be on the Switch at some point. They remastered every 3D Zelda sans Skyward Sword last gen, and I'd love to have them on Switch.

Do we know if Spelunky 2 is coming to Switch....?

Can't believe the first one (Rogue Legacy as well) isn't on there yet, match made in heaven.
