Javier's cgi looked so bad in the trailer, reason I kinda forgot about it.

Watched it last night. I didn't hate it, nor did I love it. It's a franchise that I feel like does the same thing over and over, which frankly a lot of them do but this one seems to do it in a way that sticks out very negative for me.

Got around to watching Bright. I really enjoyed it. I like the world they're building there. An interesting take on a fantasy/modern mash up. Definitely hoping for a sequel. Will Smith seemed at his best tbh.
I went in with low expectations, but it wasn't half bad. However, I can see why people wouldn't like it if they were expecting a more fantastical world, and there were parts that were too relevant to modern-day issues, so that would also result in breaking the viewer's immersion. I wouldn't compare it to Shadowrun like some people have, but it kind of reminded me of The Fifth Element a little bit. Not that I liked it as much as The Fifth Element, but there were some good parts in the film. I'll probably watch the next one.

I found it somewhat lazy in the modern-day issues. It just replaced token minority with token fantasy creature and calls it a day. Instead of a clever commentary on race relations, it was barely a commentary and certainly not a clever one. It really fell flat on that front, especially when compared to some classic and recent fantasy works that do a way better job at clever commentary on contemporary society.

Oh yeah, I agree. Personally, I hope they drop it next time if they're just going to play it lazy and safe, and just go deeper with the fantasy part of the lore. There's potential to make this world interesting, so I hope they don't waste it.

Devilman Crybaby is fucking insane and everyone should watch it, even people who don't like anime.

Watched Pirates. It was so-so.

Even if the CGI was iffy, I really liked the designs and ideas behind Javier Bardem's ghost ship and crew. That said, nothing surrounding Jack Sparrow has any gravitas anymore. The character is so goofy and indestructible (either through luck or ridiculous physical resilience) that making him the main target of the villain had no possibility of creating tension, which is a shame because he's a pretty cool villain, so he felt wasted in that regard.

Jack himself seems less likable (at least from the perspective of the other characters) than before. Wouldn't be such a problem, but he doesn't develop at all. He stopped growing as a character two to three movies ago, and kind of started devolving. I feel like there were a few moments where one of the two young leads expressed concern for him later in the film, as if they had some kind of bond, and I just couldn't see why.

Some pretty fun set pieces though. Bank heist was particularly audacious, if dumb.

Barbossa's death felt totally forced, but he's already come back once, so whatever. Dumb to lose one of the better characters of the series, but I guess they didn't want to write through a bunch of daddy issues or whatever. Also, was it ever explained how Barbossa managed to find Jack's ship? Was it just that he knew stars and whatnot and knew what they were after? Totally missed it otherwise.

I remember reading an interview with Bloom before the movie's release, where he said he was excited to do a role where he wasn't extremely attractive. Was expecting a little more than a couple of barnacles. Still stupid handsome and all that.

Also, what was with the witch lady? Totally wasted character. I suppose they could bring her back for another movie, but she just kind of felt like Calypso-lite

I didn't fall asleep to it like I did with number four, but it didn't get me to care like I did with the first three films. Lots of rehashed ideas done more poorly than in the originals.

Edit:

I think a big part of the reason I didn't care was because of how much they ditched the continuity and lore established in the earlier films.

The compass got this retroactive history and new purpose in trapping Salazar that is never really explained. Will is all barnacly despite that being a punishment for abandoning ones duties as the captain of the Dutchman, which--as far as we're told--he hasn't. His dad is out of the picture, despite being part of the Dutchman's crew. We never see Henry Turner's relationship with his mom, or what the hell she's been up to. Keira Knightley didn't get a single line in the film, nor even a mention by any of the characters explaining why she isn't a part of the adventure. She just shows up at the very end and that's it.

All in all, it's an extremely thinly written plot that pays little to no respect to the films that came before beyond a surface level gesture.

If they do a sequel, I hope they sort the hell out of the writing.

Captain Underpants is really funny. With a 5 year old in my household I've seen it countless times already, and it hasn't gotten old.

Captain Underpants was pretty all right, though I thought I'd like it more than I did. I read and enjoyed the first set of books when I was a kid (up to the seventh, going by the synopsis), but I don't remember too much of them, just that I was inspired by the creativity of the characters and the books themselves. I do appreciate that the film did a lot to replicate the art style, setting itself apart from more typical 3D animated affairs, and on such a low budget.

I think my enjoyment of the film was tempered from watching Paddington on Tuesday. I absolutely loved Paddington (great film for a rainy day, or just whenever) and I think Captain Underpants came off as very loud by comparison, especially with the humor. It wasn't bad, but these days I think I'm just more into what Paddington was doing.

Seriously though, Paddington is great. I don't watch many new family-friendly film affairs, and enjoy even fewer of the ones I do see, but this one was surprisingly funny without being dumb, and very charming. Check it out if you haven't.

Been watching Black Mirror to see what all the fuss is about. I'm up to the end of s2 now and White Bear has been far away my favorite episode. Chef recommends.

I've also been going through Toast of London, The Good Place, and Broadchurch s2 and enjoying them all.

My favorite episode is s1 ep 2, 15 million merits, with the talent show. But I'm also not that into the series, too many episodes I simply did not like.

Tom Segura's stand up wasn't his best.

I also finished Mindhunter S1 -- can someone explain the final scene to me?
Was the dude burning the photos just a new serial killer that Holden will presumably target in S2?

I was binging stand up and his was the only one I didn't like and didn't finish and Netflix kept suggesting it anyway.

The one thing annoying me about Netflix right now is how a) all the shows/movies 'picked for me' are Netflix originals and b) how Bright seems to be one of the first recommendations in a bunch of different genres. I get why they do that but its not exactly user friendly.

Tom Segura's stand up wasn't his best.

Yeah. Its the same guy that's in the cold open most episodes. They show him progressing through the stages. First he's just nervously watching a house, then interacting with the home owner, then sitting inside the house, etc. He's also the guy in the first episode they show is super anal working at the office where the guy asks him for a new roll of scotch tape and he wants the empty cartridge before he hands it out.

I gave it a go, and I would only recommend it to people going through monster movie/Godzilla withdrawal. It's pretty much a vendetta story with humans trying to take back Earth after they abandoned it, but it's nothing groundbreaking and kind of cringey at times. The animation is also kind of inconsistent.
