Been looking at Starting Strength today and seems like the ideal way to go for a beginner. No crap, just the basics to get you started.

The only problem for me is that there may be more than one day between workouts.

I haven't looked at the bike to be honest. It's a bit depressing.

...and I think (not weighed yet), that I put on about 15lb in the US, so that will have gone a long way to ensuring my break had all the nutrients it needed to heal.

Hey everyone, this is Ixian / nekura from GAF. Glad to see this thread is alive and well at its new home; I was bummed when GAF went down in flames just as the band was getting back together in the Fitness thread. Also glad we have Sean and some other old faces back. <3

Anyone ever have an issue with getting bored? I've been lifting around 2 or 3 years now and am just getting kind of tired of spending an hour a day at the gym. May I should try focusing on something else like cardio for a month or so.

Hey guys, first post here. I need some advice. I've started C25K few days ago and I want to do something to strengthen my core and arms on other days. I don't have access to gym. Thought you guys might help me.
BTW I'm in a pathetic shape. Slim but very weak especially hand and core.
Thanks in advance.

That is the point of Starting Strength and everything else put out by Rippetoe, cut the crap and just do whats needed. Minimalism definitely has its been benefits but also has draw backs.

Sounds like it's time to switch it up. Try a new program or a new activity altogether if you have to. Signing up for an event can also get your motivation back up.

Yeah exactly. Initially I was going to go in hard and do a six-day routine; I found something on reddit but it looked waaaaay too complex - I'd spend more time looking up the routines that actually doing them. I feel like a few months on SS will be sound.

Should also probably say it's good to be in a community from when it's (re)starting. I only got involved in maybe one community at the other place cause I felt like there were too many personalities and shit I hadn't been party to before.

Rotating the focus of your training helps with this like you alluded to. My general plan is a Hypertrophy/Conditioning -> General Strength -> Power. USe different variations as assistance depending on the phase. Helps alleviate the tedium of training. OR take up strongman, lots of variety there ;)

Signing up for an event is great idea, you get that extra push of motivation from preparing for it. You meet some cool people and you get a feel for if something you want to continue to pursue. I tried Strongman earlier this year, got my ass my kicked but absolutely loved competing and trying things I would never have otherwise. Like pulling a military humvee or deadlifting a car.

The reddit PPL is likely what you found. Its not a bad program if you like to train and spend time in the gym. SS or SL is fine, and will allow you to dial in on learning the core movements, but eventually something else with more volume and some minor periodization will be better

Yeah that was it; at this stage it just looked like too much and realistically I wouldn't have the time to do that amount of work. I did look around to see how long people spend on SS and it seems like it depends on your progression ... though 3-6 months seemed to be the ballpark.

I'm 6'2 and really skinny so any lifting is gonna be an improvement tbh.

One of the biggest pitfalls of both Starting Strength and Stronglifts is upperbody volume. Generally OHP and Bench respond better to volume and general work than Squat does. If you add anything add some skullcrushers to build your triceps

Has anyone here lost a lot of weight (50-100 lbs) before? I feel like the more I lose, the further it seems I have to go. I'm 5'7 and 210 lbs now (used to be about 290). Just thought I would have a waist by now haha.

I know BMI is bullshit (I'd be a skeleton at 140 lbs), but it'd be nice to know how much further I have to go. Either way, going to keep at it.

I dropped like 80 lbs several years ago. I got to 160. Now this was before lifting and it was purely cardio.

I have been trying recently to start doing, well something- anything, to get in shape a little. My problem is, im not allowed to actually lift or do most physical activities other than basically bicycling, walking and swimming. (medical issue)
So I decided to start bicycling. Now im wondering though, does it do anything to the upper body as well? or is there something I can do for it, like some simple every day upper body / back exercises to balance things out.

I just wanna do something since I feel like I lost all strength in my upper body, not that there has been much before but it degraded so much that I start to feel bad about it and bicycling alone might not be enough to counter that.
But as you might be able to tell, I don't know a whole lot about it.

Also, not sure if that matters, but Im tall and skinny and my daily routine mostly doesnt include any physical activity other than bicycling every other day.

Maybe an elliptical machine? You can use your arms and legs on those.

I know what you mean. I lost 100 lbs and while I don't feel like I'm further away from my goals now, I think this last bit is going to be tougher than what I've already done.

I'd love to be 180-200 but like have a substantial bit of muscle added on. I'm close to 180 now but like... not built (I'm 5'7). I think most people think for my height the ideal weight is around 150-170ish but I feel skinny at that weight.

Reading up on when to jump ship off the beginners linear routines, they all seem to say when you start to plateau.

I can't imagine I'll plateau evenly across all lifts. Do you ween yourself onto a new plan, or just jump right on in. If jumping, when is that point?

Ah I'm jealous of taller guys a bit when it comes to weightloss, but on the flipside i'll look pretty big once I'm a muscular 180 given my height.

I know what you mean. I lost 100 lbs and while I don't feel like I'm further away from my goals now, I think this last bit is going to be tougher than what I've already done.

Yeah much better way of putting it. I just want to eat 3000 calories a day again!

Has anyone here really hurt their stomach with a weight belt? I have a Rogue Fitness Ohio belt which has been fine for the past few years. Recently, I worked up to sets of 365x5 on the squat and started to get pain by my belly button and obliques. I went to my doctor who sent me for an ultra sound and they found a few lipomas but no hernia. You can feel the indentation in the areas where I feel pain and they are pretty much in line with the lower belt.

I don't wear the belt too tight, but I have had to tighten it more as I've lost some weight recently. I'm wondering if the stomach fat was protecting it and me perhaps over tightening it has caused this. The pain can be pretty intense at times, but mostly when I'm laying in bed. Thoughts?

Been doing the golden six routine for about 12 weeks so the the recommended length is close. Any tips on a good follow up routine?

It's been fun and a real challenge to do six sets in one sitting, it really tested my discipline in sleeping and eating (I slacked in both lol)

I went from 160 to 155 in a week somehow. I've been eating everything I get my hands on. Probably also means squats tomorrow will be 5 sets of disappointment. Dammit.

Waited like 2 months to get into gaf, but only had to wait like 10 mins to get into here.

I haven't been to the gym in over a week. I feel so weak and small. I'm going tomorrow for surely. Can't wait to do some sumo deads, and see if I can still muscle up on rings!

Short answer, yes.

Slightly longer answer, yes, and I've also broken a rib because I had it badly positioned (the rib had been previously broken, so was weaker than it should have been).

I think the Fitness folks didn't get in via Discord as I tried to look for them first. Got in via the Mafia community(thick as thieves).

Anyway, heading off to the gym in a few minutes. Thanks for the advice :)

Took today off to spend time with my family (wife took off too) but I'll be back at it at 7:00 AM.

Mostly wanted to come in to say that Mario is fucking amazing...maybe my favorite Mario since Super Mario World (I'm only about 3 hours in so far)

Edit: what's up Psycho!!

I think I kinda figured out how to deadlift yesterday? I've been doing the OHP with the barbell, and on a lark I tried doing the deadlift again. Instead of my back, I could feel the strain on the front of my legs. Is this correct now? If so, the only thing I can't figure out is how to drop the barbell, heh.

Family beats gym. Smart decision. Although I know "family time" just consisted of everyone watching you play Mario. lol
