This game looks like something I would enjoy. I have yet to play Resident Evil 7 or Soma, which one would you guys say is the better of the two or are they both equally worth playing?

Optional Objectives All this talk about my 2015's GOTY inspired me to replay it. I'll try to play it with an open mind on the encounters, approaching them from different angles and treating them as puzzles, the way you and Dusk Golem suggested. It'll be a good change of pace after a whole week of Hitman, and it will most likely make me like the game even more than I already do.

RE7 for the gameplay, SOMA for everything else.

Soma is more story driven (it's why people don't like the monsters because there's less focus with combat), while RE7 has more going for it outside of story like having combat, boss fights, survival, depends what you're looking for, if you're just looking for more story then go for Soma

Soma represents for me THE best game narrative I have ever encountered. If removing the monsters helps with sales, I am all for it. I have never experienced a game story where the ending haunted me for weeks to come.

Absolutely need to play this again but to me the monsters belong to the game so I will play with them again.

People I beg you: please buy / finish this game.

The monsters in Safe Mode aren't out to kill you, but they will react to your presence. "We have to think of them as inhabitants of the environment and make their interactions with the player fit the game's atmosphere and story. I'm actually surprised by how well it all turned out. It fits the game far better than I thought it would when we started working on it. To be honest, it even made me question if this was the way the game should have been released in the first place. But I haven't made my mind up about that yet."

The monsters won't just stand around doing nothing either, and might even attack if you annoy them enough. "So while you can't die, the monsters may still be dangerous if you push your luck too much," says Grip. "This means there's still a sense of hostility in these creatures, which preserves the original intention of making the world feel inhospitable and oppressive. It's details like this that should make Frictional's Safe Mode more compelling, and more naturally integrated, than the Wuss Mode mod. Although it'll be interesting to see how it gets around that fraught moment in the wrecked ship.

Good to have it confirmed that they're still there, unlike stated in the OP.

The stance of Frictional Games founder and director also differs greatly from what we've seen on this thread.

I ask Grip if designing Safe Mode has changed the way he'll think about horror game design in the future. "It depends on the game, but we'll think about encounters differently," he says. "I think the biggest problem with SOMA is that the experience of meeting the creatures doesn't really add anything to the themes. They help build the atmosphere, but the stories they generate don't have a lot to do with the game's larger themes of identity and consciousness. Gameplay has to give rise to personal stories that mirror the narrative, and we're making sure this is the case in both our upcoming games."

I'm glad to hear they're building on that principle with their next games.

amazing game! monsters included. the fact each one required a different method to get around was great too.

but i can see why some might want a more leisurely stroll in the park.

did this ever get a pro patch? or improvements through boost mode? because back when i played it it ran like absolute shit (thanks unity!)

As someone who recently played and liked Amnesia Dark Descent, how would this game benefit from having no monsters? I think of what Amnesia would be like with no enemies and it would take away the whole fun/point of the game. Is Soma different gameplay/story-wise? I was thinking of getting it.

It's more of a walking sim/figure out what happened type game than a survival horror type game. It just has a few sequences you have to avoid monsters.

Is the game all that difficult?

No. Just trial and error hide and sneak past monster stuff that many disliked. As above, it's more of a walking sim type game and the encounters were poorly done compared to fleshed or games going for that like Alien Isolation.

Gah silly question, might've missed in the thread...is this patch Xbox exclusive somehow or is it coming to other platforms as well?

A walking sim mode for games like this is a pretty interesting idea. I'd probably finish Amnesia if it had that lol

Alright. Thanks. I regretted missing it before, and have been meaning to play it in some form. I like good horror games.

Sounds like it's a bit like Outlast and Alien Isolation then, but not as good. Alien Isolation surprised me with how good it was until it started to really drag on and on and on.

Yeah those sequences are not nearly as well done as those games. To be fair there also aren't many of them. Most of the game is just walking sim type exploring and finding things that help piece together the story of what happened. I don't use that term negatively as I love walking sim type games. The hide from monsters parts are just a tad frustrating as they're trial and error and they tend to kill pacing and happen when you're sucked into exploring and finding the next piece of details on what happened. I still loved the game though.

This game might have the best story in all of games, but the monster encounters really tore down the overall quality. The narrative and sound design is wonderful and everyone should play this game now that there's no longer an asterisk next to it.

soma is a lot better paced than alien isolation. i loved the atmosphere of alien but it really did drag and felt like it was padded to increase play time on account of it being SP only.

the story and themes of soma stuck with me for days and the only game to manage that are the silent hill titles. it's well worth playing, with or without this patch. for me the only thing that let it down slightly was it's poor performance on PS4.

I wonder why they keep doing that. observer seems to fall into that trap as well - great world and storybuilding but hey... a monster is going to hunt you because HORROR.

I didn't have the "monster" problem with SOMA. I did with Amnesia tho.

The one in the sunken ship was actually amazing to me.

Really looking forward to this. I read nothing but terrible things about the cat and mouse stuff with the monsters but also read universal praise about the world and the story. I think Silent Hill: Shattered Memories would have really benefited from a safe mode. Having said that, I almost wonder if the best version of Soma would be basically safe mode but maybe with one late game enemy encounter?

Makes sense, and sounds like something I'd enjoy. I like walking sims as well. Well, for the most part. What Remains of Edith Finch and Gone Home (though it was a letdown at the end) are standouts. I couldn't finish The Vanishing of Ethan Carter because it was too obtuse.

Yeah -- I felt the same way about Alien. It was padded far too much to increase length. Not as badly as Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, though...but it could've been a lot shorter and tighter. The last act really dragged on.

I'll definitely check this out, with monster damage.

However, according to Grip, the time that's passed since SOMA's original release has allowed the studio to consider its approach more thoroughly, "I think the biggest problem with SOMA is that the experience of meeting the creatures doesn't really add anything to the themes. They help build the atmosphere, but the stories they generate don't have a lot to do with the game's larger themes of identity and consciousness."

Damn, I'd love this mode in the Amnesia's and Outlast's. I find the enemies in those to be frustrating and detrimental to the experience.

I think I'm just over half-way through the game now. I've been playing it slowly, because it honestly hasn't hooked me or made me desire to play it. It's okay, but I don't see what all of the fuss was about.

I just
finished the Theta laboratory and am now working on escaping it. Got attacked and had to get free of alien goo
.

Those who said the enemies aren't a big deal were right. I don't think they add much to the game, or are more than a nuisance. There was one time where I was being chased and it got a bit creepy, but that was about it.

I liked Alien Isolation more, and definitely like both Outlast games better. I haven't played Amnesia, but I bought both when they were on sale well over a year ago. I'm not saying this is a bad game...it's just kind of bland.

Any updated word on when the patch will be available for PS4 users or if it is already out? Know PC/Xbone were getting it December 1st and they initially said PS4 'soon'.

I believe i'd read early first quarter was their target, i sent a tweet not too long ago to the developer asking but never heard back, they could be on holiday though.

I disagree that the monsters added nothing. They acted as extensions of the WAU and having a few of them be non hostile just doesn't make sense with the story

The monsters are pretty awful in this game, and do very little. You're not missing much by not playing with them on, but you may as well.

The game was a huge and boring disappointment, though.
