Shit, I didn't know Tatsuro Yamashita wrote a bunch of songs for Y6. I'm assuming they probably won't make it over for the localization.
No definitive word, but from my experience assume the worst. At this point I'm more interested to see what they replace the songs with, as said songs are used in pivitol moments in the games cutscenes, so much like the Crazy Ken Band stuff in Yakuza 2, replacing them will probably hurt the impact of certain scenes which is a real pity. Really wish Sega would stop doing this, but I guess its to keep licensing/translations costs down (for 6).

Just started 5 after beating 4 and this game looks and feels much better than 4. Didn't expect this from a PS3 game.

Yeah, 5 really impressed me as well. Its a huge package in terms of locations, content, additional moves etc. Its still got some of that old Yakuza jank in it though, a couple of the optional battles weren't exactly well thought out when certain characters tackle them! Anyway, enjoy Kiryu's first few chapters - he gets an amazing set piece (I think in chapter 3 or 4) that still ranks as one of the best in the series for me.

The jump from Yakuza 3 to 4 was already pretty impressive (that rain, damn), but 5 was just insane. What a beautiful mess that game is.

They weren't written for the game, which makes it wayyy less likely. You could absolutely make a case for Sega keeping them in if they owned the license to the song, unfortunately they all come from older albums of his. I suppose we can hope that the original licensing agreement for the tracks included the western release but that would require a bit of forethought and I'm not sure 6 was such a sure thing for localization until RGG0 started making waves in the west.

I wouldn't mind the songs being replaced as long as they found replacements that fit the mood of the original.
The lyrics in the original were so cheesy. I mean a chorus like
"I oooonly a human. Yes, I'm ooonly a human....I'm a human!"
was funny at first, but it also diminished the impact of some of the later scenes in my opinion.

Just finished Kiwami 2! SPOILER: Yakuza 2 is still great.

Are they crazy enough to do some sort of PS4 Y3-5 remaster ala the 1&2 HD set? I would be shocked if they did Kiwami editions for those, but anything's possible I guess. After playing through the errr charming looking Yakuza 3 again, it'd be pretty cool to see that game remastered.

Anywho, really hope I get to play through Kiwami 2 again in English in a year or so! Next up it's time to revisit 4. Hope you all have a fun New Years!

I haven't scene anything but I man I hope we at least get a port. 4 and 5 were so fun, would really be nice to get to play them in 60 FPS

After finishing Kiwami 2 I'm killing for a new game to play. Wish 6 would hurry up and come out lol. Might import Kenzan and Ishin but it would be nice to play an English game. Which means my only choice is....Dead Souls, bleh.

Just grab Kenzan and/or Ishin. Either one is a much better choice to Dead Souls for sure, two of my favourites in the series. I'd love a port of Kenzan to the PS4. Nothing fancy, just a res and frame rate upgrade and I'm good. Ishin is so nice at 60FPS that having Kenzan running similarly would be perfect!

Hey guys. We've pretty much confirmed on our streams that the Yamashita songs didn't make it into the Western version. I know for many of you that's a major letdown, and we absolutely are not deaf to that. I got my first #nosoubounobuy sent my way on Twitter not that long ago, and while it's disheartening, I understand where the sentiment is coming from. So let me do my best to recap what we've said about this across various platforms for you guys, since it seems some of this information got lost to the ether. Note that what I'm telling you here is pretty much all I can say, because discussing licensing, which correlates to a game's profitability, is generally a dicey-ass topic for "the localization" guy.

What Is This "Licensing" Thing You Speak Of?
Let's start here, because I think sometimes people do actually get confused by this. Some gaming companies pay popular artists to license their popular songs to put inside their games. This has been happening for years, and while maybe it wasn't the first, Final Fantasy VIII's "Eyes on Me" by Faye Wong was arguably one of the biggest and most impactful games to do it, at least for games made in Japan. But "licensing" is not as simple as "Hey [popular artist], we want your song. Here's 50 bucks." No! It's more like, we want to use your song and release it in our game in Asia, North America, and Europe, we want the right to put it on our soundtrack, release the game digitally, and nowadays, let players record their footage of this song over their gameplay and upload it to their own channels! Oh, and we want to be able to do this for the rest of the game's natural life, and perhaps even when we remaster this game in ten years, we'll need that too. How much?

The figure for all that would be astronomical. That's basically a buy-out. At least, for an established, well-known artist. An up-and-coming artist might be more affordable? I couldn't tell you. And bear in mind, the music industry in Japan is not the same as in America. It's different in ways I'm sure I'm not even qualified to speak on.

So things start getting left out. Okay, how much for just this region? Okay, we don't need it on our soundtrack. Or, okay, we can't afford to pay you [astronomical fee], but what if we give you a cut of every game we sell? Ah, very good then. Negotiations by professional negotiators and lawyers (not localization dudes) are finalized, contracts are signed, songs are put into games, share blocking is placed over scenes that use said song, digital rights are negotiated (or not), and the issue pops up all over again for remakes and remasters down the line.

So that's it, in principle. If I've made it sound easy, I've done it a disservice, because it's not.

How Popular is Yamashita?

Very. Ask any Japanese person if they've heard of them, the answer will probably be yes. I've been told he's essentially the Japanese "voice of Christmas." So perhaps a solid equivalent Western, and you don't have to like this, would be Michael Buble. It's important to stress - had you heard his name prior to his appearance in Yakuza 6? And remember, even if you had, I don't want to burst your... bubble... but you are the 1%.

So What You're Saying Is, in Japan, paying big yen for a major Japanese artist who everyone has heard of makes a lot of sense for marketing a game to a Japanese audience, but paying big dollars to an artist 1% of the gaming populace has heard of makes a little less sense?
Yes.

Can't You Just Negotiate Worldwide Rights? Isn't it Cheaper That Way?

Yes, it's probably cheaper to negotiate a package deal. But there's a wrinkle in that logic. Cheaper does not equal cheap. Like adding fries and a drink, the cost goes UP when you start including more regions. And per above point, does it make sense for regions where nobody has heard of the artist to pay that cost? Is the game going to sell enough to cover that? Questions that go beyond me, obviously.

Well Do You At Least Try!?
YES, every game. The numbers get ran. And if the numbers are making the game run the risk of being REJECTED in its entirety, well.... Would you rather have a Yakuza game with replaced music, or be in this thread asking why Yakuza stopped coming West? We believe it's the former, but if it's the latter, just let us know by not purchasing the game. That's the surest way to get the point across. I hope we're right, personally, because I love this damn series.

Who Replaces the Music?
The SEGA sound team. Shoji-san did Y0, and I'm actually not sure who did Y6. It just appeared one day.

Isn't This Censorship!? I Thought You Didn't Censor Games!! WHAT ABOUT PreSerVinG the ORIGINAL VISION of the CREATIVE INTENTION AND WARGLBLHAARLGHASD
...Licensing is a little different than us objecting to content and replacing it. But you can see it how you want to see it, I guess.

Is The Replacement Music Any Good?
If you go in expecting it not to be, because it can't compare to Yamashita, no. If you give it an honest listen, maybe you'll like it. Our fourth generation PR man, Jacob, IM'ed me one day after sitting down to play and said, dude, the music is so good! And I looked up at his screen, and he was on a scene with replaced music. I said... Oh. That's good to hear. He was new, and didn't know this was even a thing yet.

So there you have it. I hope this helps!

I'm just happy Yakuza games keep coming out over here. I still feel it's practically a miracle that 5 ever saw any kind of english release. When 3 originally launched with various cuts (including the Yazawa track) I was bummed, but I was kind of ignorant to the localization process. Playing that particular game back recently it's still a great, robust game even with the cut content. Anyways, thanks for the write up, TriggerRedd!

I'm still a bit sore over the reasoning Sega had to cut all that content from 3, after playing the Japanese version I don't think I'll ever go back to my old English one, except maybe to shoot for the plat trophy again (Japanese version is way harder as AnswerXAnswer is legit tough to clear!

But I agree about being over the moon with 5 getting localised. I'd completely written the series off by that point, so this happening was an amazing surprise and the series has only gotten better since then in terms of localisations. Long may it continue (plus the localisation team really should get a pat on the back for how well the games are translated, Kiwami and 0 were handled wonderfully).

Thanks, TriggerRedd, that was very informative. Are songs ever fought for based on their artistic merit or way they work with a certain scene? Or is it purely a numbers game?

On a different subject -- and I don't know if you can or are allowed to speak to this -- are there ever any internal discussions around the representation and the roles of women in the games? I know Yakuza is mostly a "man's man" kind of series, but the gaming industry is starting to move away from that male-centric viewpoint at least in the States. Maybe it's not something they really think about in Japanese studios, but it'd be great to have stronger roles for women in future Yakuza games.

Really appreciate you taking the time for to make this post Strichart-san!

While it is still a shame that the song can't be in Y6, I have faith that you guys will deliver a worthwhile replacement. The Y0 replacement theme for Bubble was actually pretty damn good, it just took a while to really get going which didn't shine through in the opening cinematic.

See, this is why I do my best NOT to post in here, because this is your thread to shoot the shit about Yakuza in, and when I show up, I end up hijacking it. As much as I love reading about people being happy with the games, you shouldn't feel like you can't talk shit about them here, or even decisions we make on the loc team because you know I'm reading it and might jump in like a jackass and get all defensive. (I won't do that.) I only chimed in on the music because I felt like that's one area that's needed clearing up for a long time. If you have questions, you can always hit me or Sam on Twitter, or stop by during our streams that we'll resume at some point!

BUT, I don't wanna be a jerk and leave the questions hanging, so I'll answer those two and then poof, smoke bomb! Cool?

We collate feedback from reviews and those user surveys you can take via the live tiles into a doc that's a pain in the ass to drop what I'm doing and write, but ends up being a great tool for discussion around the game's reception and performance. (In the industry, this is often referred to as a "postmortem.") This doc gets sent up through management and ultimately to the dev team. The topic of stronger women has come up from both reviewers and players before, and it's very evident to us that characters like Miss Tatsu or Kaoru Sayama are well received in the West - so this makes it into our post mortem, and the dev team can do or not do with that as they please. We actually are listening!

The whole discussion around the importance of the subtitle coming out of Japan hit us pretty hard. Nagoshi-san talked about that period at the end of "Song of Life." signifying closure on Kiryu's arc, and even though we couldn't use it here (We tried it out, but it just ended up awkward, and nobody even remembered to put it in) we felt like adding the subtitle to the series in the first place carried roughly the same weight. It's not indicative of a trend moving forward or anything, it was more to give Kiryu the sendoff he deserves.

If someone's going to talk shit they'll do it regardless, the crowd here is also pretty civil so it's more about discourse IMO.

As far as highjacking goes ofc it's going to happen because you actually have answers. I don't want you to feel like you can't just hang out here, because in the end this is a place for people who like the game and it should be as inclusive as possible for everyone (kind of also the reason why this place exists).

Thanks for the answers btw.

ON TOPIC:
Where did you all land on introducing people to the Yakuza thread? Should people start with Kiwami or 0?

I'm personally of the opinion that Kiwami is a smaller experience and sets up Yakuza 0 better. 0 can be overwhelming with the character switching/plot jumping around and the real estate/hostess minigames.

I've introduced 3 people to the franchise this year and they all thanked me for starting them off with Kiwami.

If someone cannot afford/doesn't want to bother with older games then 0 is by far the best entry point for beginners. Kiwami is effectively its sequel and without context from 0 the story is significantly weaker, like, there's A BUNCH of characters and plot points you're given no reason to care about unless you've played 0. Kiwami did a good job in fixing some of those compared to the original but it still very much assumes you've played 0.

I think the only downside to starting with 0 is that it's too, I'm only half kidding.

TriggerRedd It's fine man, your responses are appreciated and it's always fun to have the localization team participate from time to time. And honestly the reason we don't talk shit is that these games are too damn good lol.

As far as I understand it's not necessarily his last appearance but the premise of the game is that it's the last chapter in his story and effectively the last time he'll be playable.

0 before Kiwami for me. Kiwami, while its a remake of 1 is also designed to be a sequel to 0 in a lot of ways. 90% of new side stories have small or large callbacks to 0 that will fly over peoples heads, lots of Majima/Kiryu dialogue relates back to Majima's experiences in 0, plus 0 sets up some nice backstory for other characters used in Kiwami.

You could get away with playing the original PS2/PS3 remaster version of 1 before 0 though. The first game is pretty long in the tooth these days, so playing it after playing 0 would be the biggest step backwards in the entire series in many ways (in my opinion) since the visuals, combat, controls, camera, frame rate, side stories, content and just general engine/game improvements in 0 over the original game just elevate the experience so much for me, which is why I loved Kiwami so much, because it basically takes all of that, and puts it into Yakuza 1 while also fixing up some story points via 0.

Yeah I miss being able to switch to 4 different combat styles in Yakuza 5 so much. 0 spoiled me.

My resolution for 2018 is to finish 3,4,5 and even Dead Souls before 6 comes out. I started on the series with 0 and was instantly hooked. I played like the first hour of 4 and 5 when they came out on PSN, but never got into them because I was waiting for 0 and Kiwami. The games are so fantastic and fun.

Why rush them? that's a lot of games to clear in 3 months. And 5 is a long game on its own, you may well get burned out on the series before 6 is even released. Its better to spread them out over the course of the year (in my opinion). I played 4 Yakuza games last year, but that was over a 12 month period and even then I think that was a bit too much, but I also have the problem where I get really hooked playing them and can't put them down!

I usually play other games in between that I get from Gamefly to help avoid burn out :)

I have a huge backlog I can also go to when I need something else to play. Plus I have a little time to wait since Y3 is something I ordered online and have to wait a short while to arrive.

I played a short bit of Y6 at PSX and was blown away, so if I have to wait a little bit, I know it'll be worth it!

Dead Souls was all about Majima and Ryuji for me. Their side content rocked, the rest of it was hit or miss for me. Majima Karaoke and hostess dating was brilliant stuff though.

I love Dead Souls, it's a very flawed game with enough heart to make up for them. The story was surprisingly entertaining and yes, Majima alone makes it so worth it.

Also maybe an unpopular opinion, but I thought the gameplay was more unnecessarily contrarian (to what TPS games normally control like) and thus clunky and a bit confusing rather than just plain bad. After a couple of hours I felt pretty comfortable with it, to be honest.

My issue was with some pretty bad enemy designs that were no fun to fight. The hoodie enemy still haunts my dreams to this day. In the dead of night I swear I still hear the music coming from his headphones...
Also, not having any checkpoints for the Amon dungeons could be argued as a sign of difficulty, which is understandable, but having to replay a 90 minute long level from the beginning because the boss can pretty much one shot you is... well its not my idea of fun that's for sure!
If the combat was tightened up a bit it'd have been excellent fun, a nice arcadey shooter instead of all the grim and gritty cover based stuff released at the time, with the added bonus of including Yakuza characters would have been ace, but DS just falls short of being great. Though the fact that it does contain all the normal Yakuza trimmings (especially side stories) does sorta make up for some of the shortcomings, as its still great fun to explore the destroyed town, the side stories are entertaining, there's still plenty of content there to explore and its one of the best games for upgrades and weapons - because they really do make a huge difference in this game.

I'd definitely like to see a remaster of it as well. Some little tweaks here, along with a stable frame rate and most of my issues (bar the Amon one) would be fixed right out the gate. Doubt it'd ever happen though, I mean the game tanked outside of Japan for sure, no idea what it sold like there though.

I recently picked up Kenzan/Isshin for PS3.

The story for the first PSP game is translated, but not released. The translation patch (at the time I read about it) had the unfortunate side effect of messing up all untranslated Japanese text (i.e. all shops, side stories, hostesses etc.) I've no idea what state its in now.

Translation guides in various shapes and forms exist for Kenzan and Ishin, but no patches exist. Wasn't aware you could even patch PS3 games yet. Is that a thing now? Awesome if true.

But do yourself a favour, get Ishin on the PS4 instead. I've played it on the PS3 and PS4 and the res and frame rate jump from PS3 to PS4 (30 to 60FPS being the biggest leap) is a huge improvement to the game. Plus it looks much nicer as well, which is a nice bonus. But really just having vastly smoother combat is a huge improvement.

I managed to snag a 2-for-1 deal at a con so I already got the PS3 version. I have issues playing through games without being able to read/understand so I rarely complete them.

Only exception are story light games eg. Arcade games and fighters.

I wish Dead Souls had Binary Domain's controls. BD is such a good (and underrated) shooter!

While Dead Souls camera kinda clunky, I actually have more fun with Dead Souls than Binary Domain.

Dead Souls' arcade style shooter (while funky control layout too) suited for fast pace game-play.

After 1 year & 300+ hours for Platinum.

Having fun all of it.

I really now want to replay Dead Souls... I mean, it has a mountain of issues, but damn was there still a lot I like about the game... I'll add it to the replay list just under 4!
