I'm getting more and more reluctant to use the report function too.
Same here. Especially because a lot of the types of posts that used to result in a warning or ban when I reported them now result in nothing. Blatant racism, gendered slurs, thread derailing, none of that seems to be actionable anymore, or else my reports keep ending up on the desk of a mod who doesn't like me.

So an update on my mom's cancer. After a biopsy, the doctor concluded that there is nothing to worry about. There will have to be more tests to be sure, of course, but turns out that the growth wasn't overly aggressive, but actually benign and possibly unrelated. So they scared my mom half to death giving her the worst case scenario.

My mom being my mom means that she gave them a piece of her mind for causing her extra stress over the holidays. I do hope the tests continue to come back negative and we can leave cancer behind us in the dumpster fire of 2017. xP

That's absolutely fantastic to hear HyperFerret! I'm really happy for you and your mother! Hopefully those further tests prove to be negative as well and it becomes something neither of you need to worry about again! ^_^

Awesome news! Hope everything stays well.

On the subject of reporting posts, after seeing the amount of men on here using the c word, I figured reporting was a waste of time. Maybe I am just sensitive about it, but I feel like I have never seen the word online as much as I have between the old site and here.

I heard that word used to be banned on the old site. I think it got unbanned because some European countries use it a lot iirc?

Finally back home after a crazy holiday. This is late, but thank you to everyone in discord who let me vent about my dad's hospitalization and gave kind, encouraging words. They let him out Christmas Eve, so just in time to spend Christmas with everyone at home. They still have some concerns due to family history, but for now, looks like everything is good!

That is so great to hear! I'm really happy for your mother and your family. She deserves all the treats she can get after that I'm sure!

HyperFerret so glad to hear that! I think a cake is a great idea :)

Talking about potentially sick parents, they found something worrying in my mom's eye. I'm still unclear on what it is exactly, but she has an appointment with a specialist in a month and I'm going with her. My dad is good at sticking up for her during appointments/with doctors, but he's awful at actually taking care of her if she's feeling sick so it's on me. I don't mind but she has some serious trauma related to hospitals and doctors from when my grandpa passed away, and it's making her anxious. I keep telling her she should see a therapist to help her with it, but I know she won't :/

It's so disheartening that seemingly every thread on the gaming side that calls for any kind of progressive change in gaming almost immediately becomes a dumpster fire of 'keep politics out of my video games!' or every other tired argument for the status quo ever. I don't enjoy getting into internet arguments so I generally don't speak up much but reading those kind of threads is always so frustrating because a lot of gamers refuse to see any sort of problem with their hobby and refuse to accept any critique of it. This place is slightly better than most other gaming communities on the net where any sort of discussion like this will get dog piled as 'SJW crap' almost immediately, but it isn't THAT much better.

Warnings and temporary bans aren't something to be taken lightly.

Bit late to the party here because of Christmas stuff, but: I wholeheartedly disagree. Warnings and temporary bans are really pretty inconsequential -- we're talking about not being able to post for a matter of, like, hours; that's not deterring anyone -- and posters with ill intent learn how to game the system looong before they escalate to lengthy bans or permabans. For this to actually become a comfortable place to post, either the mindset that warnings and temp bans are somehow much weightier than the incredibly mild slap on the wrist they really represent needs to be reconsidered, or there need to be far fewer steps in between first warning and permaban. Because at the current slow, slow pace of escalating to actually consequential bans, the forum atmosphere that I think the mods are aiming for and that the women in this thread are asking for is never going to arrive.

Agree with this. There's also a ton of fucked up stuff that never catches warnings (despite users hitting that report button). Can't escalate anything if they don't even see it as a problem.

I wish I could get at least that from the thread I made. I just feel like nobody cares and if that's true then there can't be changed if it's not even acknowledged.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother :( I wish her the best and that it ends up being nothing serious, and hopefully it's not too draining/stressful for you to help her through it.

I admire all of you both here and elsewhere who are able to challenge these never ending comments on the gaming side, I personally don't have the stomach for it and my anxiety/fear of replies doesn't help much either. It's really sad that gaming side on here is just as bad/if not worse then the other place and it's why just like there I stay on the off-topic side (though OT is far from perfect either) and never visit the gaming side.

----------

As for the modding/warnings/ban lengths subject goes while I don't really have much first had experience with it as I stay away from those threads, having seen plenty of those posts elsewhere I have to agree with the side of inconsistency/ban lengths being inconsistent and not nearly long enough to be an actual deterrent in many cases. Of course I have read quite a few replies directly from mods/admins elsewhere and greatly appreciate the hard work they have been doing as I can't begin to grasp how taxing a work it must be but I echo the others above in that the "slow escalation" in ban's warnings is too lenient in many cases and seems to be easily gamed by quite a few.

I bet you are talking about this thread: https://www.resetera.com/threads/ni...r-apolitical-veneer-of-fun-are-such-bs.13480/

I reported one such post and... nothing. Not even a warning. The poster would have been banned at the old place.

I just want to chime in here and at least address one thing you mentioned. Yeah, we are aware of this on our end. We're still in a bit of a growing stage with ensuring moderation is done with SOME sort of standardization. There's always going to be leeway and subjectivity when it comes to determining what a post is saying and what it's trying to say (or skirt around saying). I know for instance there have been quite a few posts that have been reported that were just poorly worded, or simply a matter of ignorance rather than malice. Others, it's a little easier or obvious to identify. We aren't perfect, and we will make mistakes, but we're trying to do as best as we can.

Anyway, one of the things we're sitting down to discuss soon is the issue of "toeing the line." It's been a problem, and there are some posters that we can tell are doing it. I'd like to see if there's MORE we can do on that end, because we are aware it exists and we need to talk about it on our end. I want this forum to be a great place to actually have discussions, and while the troll element will always arise in some form here and there, we'll do our best to stay on it.

I've read the recent pages regarding moderation and I hear you, and I know I'll be bringing it up soon during one of our meetings to hopefully iron out something.

Anyway, that's the end of my invasion. Also you've got spider in here, she's good people.

don't tell her i said that

Happy new year, everyone. It's been a rough second half of 2017 for me, so here's hoping this year will be better.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother :( I wish her the best and that it ends up being nothing serious, and hopefully it's not too draining/stressful for you to help her through it.

Thank you! I'm not too worried about it yet, especially because there's no point in stressing before we have more information. I just feel bad because she had a bunch of health problems this year. Her back had her immobile for a few weeks in March, and we still don't know exactly what was wrong because of our insurance. (It's a long story, like it always is with insurance...) So hopefully we can get everything settled and no more problems!
