I can't. It's zelda this year.Last Guardian was such a dark horse last year, this year I can see a weird game winning it.
Agree on #1, not sure about Mario being above Persona 5. I think that will be a battle.I can't. It's zelda this year.
If they do rankings it'll be
1) Zelda
2) Mario
3) Persona 5 - with Huber fighting for this one the hardest.
Maybe p5 gets to 2 but that'll be a rough battle. It really depends on how much backing Ben gives Huber and if Brad would put it ahead of Mario. Damiani is catching up with p5 but I don't see him rating it above Mario or Zelda.Agree on #1, not sure about Mario being above Persona 5. I think that will be a battle.
I think the #4 spot will also be a battle (aka, "games that could've won GOTY in 2016 but not in 2017")
(Predictions based exclusively on my judgment of the quality of all games involved)
The E3 hype stream they did the week before it started? It might have been thatDoes anyone remember in what group stream Blood showed a japanese dragon quest ad ?
I agree. The final lists that outlets put out are really often quite uninteresting. I'd much rather hear a recorded debate about what people feel are the merits and flaws of the games rather than just the final decision.Like I said in the GiantBomb thread, these winners lists are not the be all, end all. I personally don't even care who wins. My friends opinions probably matter more. And at the end of the day, my GOTY/top 10 matters the most to me. For me, the interesting part is the discussion, breaking down each game and why its good and why its bad.
Thats why I hope they actually record the deliberations for game of the year. If its a "here's a video, we announced of all the winners" like last year, I'm gonna be really disappointed.
Which is why GB supplement their main top 10, the one that gets the top billing, with personal top 10s from each of them.It just becomes the GB situation with people making cases for games, and trying to ram through their passion games. Which again is pretty boring. I'd be much more interested in hearing what Ian or Ben's own lists are.
it's gonna be a battle between mario and zelda, but maybe some other allies will bring other games just to spice it up a little. (we know huber with p5, maybe brad with yakuza?
but yeah, it's gonna boil to those 2
btw ourghostsofwar keep me updated with your impression on ever17!
The thing that really brings it together for me is how they supplement their own lists (which aren't totally predictable, but if you've watched them all year you might have some decent guesses) with lists from other industry professionals and friends of the site. It'd be neat if EZA could do the same with their friends/SOs/spouses/etc, even if it'd be a ton of work.Which is why GB supplement their main top 10, the one that gets the top billing, with personal top 10s from each of them.
And generally speaking category awards excite me more since they are less predictable.
It's a shame that the dungeons are somehow significantly better than past dungeons, but still just too damn long. And just wrapped up Persona 5. Overall, I think it's a great game and can understand why Ben and Huber would love it so much. But I also agree with a lot of the pushback that the game is kind of a slog. It's a difficult game to marathon play without becoming numb to the charm of it which is why I've been playing it on and off for the past four months.
And after going through TMS#FE and Persona 5, I've got to say that Atlus style dungeons just aren't for me. They're exaggerated, padded, and unwieldy and at points, during both games, I had stop and definitively ask myself, "Is this how I want to spend my time?" Often the answer was no and I'd power on to the nearest save point and quit to come back the following week and continue where I left off. The Egyptian dungeon was infuriating in how it shows how close I was to the actual treasure and then threw five hours of hoops for me to jump through. I nearly listed the game on eBay on the spot.
I stuck with it though for the characters and I think that's where most of the Persona magic really is. I really did like most of the crew of misfits that comprised The Phantom Thieves even if they were flawed characters. Most of my time was set up around maximizing my efficiency around getting as much time of day with them. That included getting SP adhesives so I could finish dungeons in one day, maxing out Kawakami so she could make coffee and curry for me (and eventually grant me more time at night), and maxing out the politician so I could earn more money to keep calling up Kawakami.
The result was that I maxed out Ryugi, Takemi, Ohya, Haru, Futaba, Ann, Mishima, Yoshida, Makoto, Hifumi, and Kawakami on a first playthrough. I enjoyed how all the characters were broken in their own way and your friendship helped encourage them to fix those things for themselves. Not all the stories are satisfying (Hifumi starts off interesting but ends with a whimper) but more often than not it's all very good character building. Better than in any game I've played in 2017.
But man, I keep coming back to how atrocious those dungeons are. They're designed like they were made for a free-to-play grind but Atlus forgot to charge people money to get through them any faster. And it's totally cool if that's your thing but I hate feeling like a game doesn't respect my time and such a feeling tugged at me multiple times over my 100+ hour playthrough. It makes me want to avoid all future Atlus RPGs until one's released that doesn't suffer from such pacing issues. I was interested in Persona 4 but I'm considering pass on the game completely or waiting until 2019 at the earliest to try jumping back in.
It was like Macross and the SDF-1 but in Star Wars. Would be fun to seeThat Star Wars idea of a whole city built in space in an old star destroyer makes me sad only because I will never see it.
It's a shame that the dungeons are somehow significantly better than past dungeons, but still just too damn long.
I've been stuck on the final story dungeon since probably the end of April and still don't feel like going back to finish it.
I'm actually not sure if they're actually longer, but the fact that the old dungeons in P3/4 were randomized made them certainly feel longer. At least the handcrafted layout of P5 dungeons are less boring to look at and walk through. Are the dungeons as long as the other Persona games? I don't regret finishing the game. In many ways, it's like climbing Everest. I'm happy to have done it once but it took a lot of endurance to climb that summit and I don't know if I have it in me to do it all over again. I'd also be remiss for not mentioning that Persona 5 probably has my favorite soundtrack of the year. The OST (with a special nod to "Rivers in the Desert") is the most enjoyable I've heard in two years since the highly divisive Xenoblade Chronicles X OST (with the Persona 5 OST undoubtedly benefitting from a better mix and mastering process). I feel like many Western composers create their works to set the ambiance instead of actively engaging the player. It's a trend I've seen recently in films as well. Persona 5 kicks that idea to the curb and gives a unique, boppin' type of video game OST I've never heard before.
Since you're in the final dungeon, I'd advise just using Gamefaqs or a Youtube to walk you through the puzzles to help speed up the process. The enemies aren't really that difficult, however. I really loved the magnificent bastards that made up the cast and it was worth it for me to see their journey through to the end. At best you're about 4 hours away from the final boss + a 90-minute storyline wrap up. The ending makes me wonder if the anime is going to be a retelling of the game or a continuation of the story.
EZA Awards and debates will be streamed on twitch.
Edit: Too slow I guess :)
Hottake here, Mario is Mario, which honestly isn't that great, at least for me. Platformers don't do it for me. Not remotely GOTY when you have Zelda out in the same year.
Yep. Sounds the same as last year if they're doing it in a 2 hour group stream. Main GOTY debate and pick will be off screen and sub categorized picked on stream. Boo these men. Boo!Don't forget they had "debates" last year as well for random categories. I really enjoyed it, but it may not be the full GOTY debate.
