This doesn't really answer your question but next week Samsung will announce better TVs and after their underwhelming 2017 range of TVs I think they will come back strong with their 2018 lineup, as far as LCD TVs go. Might be worth waiting a bit.

Hmmm, might well wait then. Were the 2017 models underwhelming as 2017 TVs or were they underwhelming relative to 2016's Samsung TVs specifically?

Both. Just totally underwhelming from Samsung. Sony and LG stole the headlines in 2017 as far as TV recommendations and accolades go.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up! In that case then, and sorry if this has already been raised ad infinitum in this thread, but which specific models should I be looking at Sony and LG-wise around the 55 range?

Depends on your budget. For Sony, the XE90/X900E is where you start looking, going up in models if budget allows it. For LG, I would be looking at the B/C7 OLEDs.

I know this is an OLED thread but I was playing Gears 4 on the X connected to my TCL P605 and I still can't get over how good it looks for the value. The panel lottery plays a large part especially w/ TCL. However if you're lucky enough to get a decent panel like I did it's such a steal. Also watched Bright in Dolby Vision on Netflix, terrible movie but some scenes really popped w/ HDR.

Hey mate, may I ask what firmware you are on? This should not be the case... for SDR content, PC or non-PC input mode has the same level of accuracy for colors. Out of the box they could be different though. Also what are your settings?

I'm on 04.70.30. Yeah, i also thought the same about PC mode in SDR until i saw a very noticeable difference in Assasin's Creed: Origins!

Edit: So i restarted my Xbox One X and LG C7 and when i switch between PC mode on and off there isn't a difference in image quality and colors anymore! O_o This is soooo strange but i'm happy now!

So, can we expect prices of current tv sets to drop after CES? Or they drop after CES announced models are available?

Because Game Mode has the colour gamut locked in Wide and i want to use Auto. You can use Auto do in HDR Game Mode and the ISF modes.

But i'll take Game Mode with an oversaturated colour gamut over broken colors in PC Mode any day.

Yea, Game Mode looks fine to me. Hopefully they fix PC mode soon.

Yes i hope so, PC Mode it's really broken from what i've seen in SDR and HDR. A shame really, can't use ISF now for gaming.

Game Mode is indeed fine but it would be nice to have the option to change the colour gamut to Auto.

Colour at 45 makes SDR wide look good to me, and that's all that matters, especially as there is no industry reference standard like there is with films.

Besides the P607, any other good TV 4k tv with Dolby HDR under $799? I want to buy the P607 on Amazon but I'm not sure when its ever going to be in stock again. I don't mind if it's under 55, but atleast more than 42. Buying on Amazon due gift cards.

Good point. But luckily i don't have to use Game Mode after all. Haha.

Heys guys what is vertical banding?

It's the most glaring flaw of OLED tvs.
On very dark scenes or uniform background when there's a panning shot, you see a pattern of vertical lines. That's like the barcode of your tv.

Led tv got their own uniformity issues, but this one is hard to swallow and can be quite distracting because otherwise the picture is nearly perfect.

Can someone with an LG C7 post their settings for:

- SDR movies/TV
- HDR movies/TV
- gaming
- HDR gaming

I haven't been able to find a list of presets that I like and it's driving me nuts

SDR movies : ISF expert bright room
OLED 40
contrast 85
brightness 50
Sharpness at 10
Colour at 50
Tint 0
Everything off or auto
Warm2 for color temperature
Gamma 2.2
For SDR gaming, same thing as above, but I switch to PC icon on the input menu

For hdr content, there's is nothing to tinker. Chose game mode for hdr gaming, and leave everything off or auto.
For hdr movie, you need to set dynamic contrast to low and use Cinema mode.

For Dolby vision content, leave everything as is and use Cinema mode.

Keep in mind that my settings look great on a very dark room, I don't know how you watch your content.

Just got the LG OLED 65. Dolby Atmos one. I think I have all settings correct, but switch looks like ass. The Pro looks amazing, and HDR is enabled. Any tips for it?

For Xbox one x, should I set to 8 bit or 10 bit output for an LG oled for sdr content?

I believe it switches automatically for hdr content.

Hearing the stuff about SD or sub 1080p content looking sort of bad on LG OLEDs really worries me a little.

Most of my cable TV channels still run in SD, most "HD" channels in 720p. While I game a lot more (PS4 Pro, Switch) than watching TV, the stellar handling of lower resolutions by my plasma is something I'm quite happy about. Even older SD games on Wii, Gamecube or SNES Mini look at least acceptable on it.

I'm really excited to see what LG and Sony have to offer at CES!

I'm deciding between two 75" tvs and need a little help.

a) Sony x900e
b) Samsung q7f

Both are priced close to the same at the store I'm looking to purchase from. The Samsung is discounted heavily from $3500 to $2799. And the Sony is priced just a hundred dollars cheaper at $2699.
The guy in the store says the q7f is the better tv but it seems to get a lot of hate online because of the "Q" marketing and I can't tell if people are being objective about its capabilities or not as a result.

The store has them setup side-by-side and I honestly think the q7f looks slightly better because it seems to have a lot less glare on the screen. They must be using a better anti-glare coating. The Samsung looks super saturated with the colors though and the Sony colors look much more natural but I don't know if this is the store having these tv's setup with wonky color calibration values or not.

The $100 difference doesn't really bother me. I just want a good tv that will last me awhile. I primarily watch movies and tv shows, and game a little here and there. A lot of my movies and tv shows are streamed from AppleTV (soon to be 4k version) if that makes a difference in the decision. But I do have a blueray player too.

Thanks for the help.

PS:
I should also mention that they have a 75" Sony 940e for sale at $3500 but they didn't have it on display. I could potentially stretch my budget but without seeing it in person I'm reluctant. Is the x940e worth almost a $1k more in features and picture quality?

Yeah low resolution crap did look better on my old Plasma, but it was also smaller and in the end that old stuff is always gonna look worse than native content. I'm watching Sopranos on 720p (or lower, who knows when it's HBO nordic) and it's fine on my C7. Much better than my friends good Sammy LCD in fact.

Whoever says 1080p image looks exactly the same on 4k must tell a lie or never actually see it in real life. Hook up switch with my new 55 inch Sony XE90 and it looks worse compare to my old 1080p Samsung 49 inch. The picture is just more blurry and pixellet ( also bigger size surely contribute to that ). It is even more obvious with 720p game like Xenoblade 2.

So for now I only hookup my 4k TV with apple tv 4k and PS4PRO. Suddenly feel like I jump in anbit too early, even though there are already plenty of 4K content/gaming.
It's probably more cuz you're going from 49 to 55 than it being a 4k tv. How far do you sit from the tv?

I'm about 10 feet and had a similar switch and my switch looks fucking dope on my x900e

Hey all,

I've got a 49" Changhong 1080p set that's a few years old. I'm at the point where I'd like to move up to a 55", mostly for when I'm gaming - I feel like the extra inches will help a lot with making out detail and becoming more immersed in single-player titles.

Trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on this Hisense 55H7Dfrom Rakuten. Between their $50 off coupon code and 10% off w/ eBates, could snag it for just under $300 total today.

I realize it's very much a budget 4K TV, but that's what I'm in the market for. It would either be this or continue waiting for a sale on the TCL S-series, which I know is pretty highly regarded for the price. The P-607 is the ideal, but I don't think I wanna shell out that much for a TV right now.

I should note most of my viewing time is spent streaming TV & movies, though I do watch basketball and football as well. When it comes to gaming, I'm either playing my Switch or hooking up my laptop via HDMI. No PS4 or Xbone. My living room has low lighting, and the viewing angles aren't too crazy.

From what I can tell, it seems like the Hisense is a pretty decent budget set, especially for $300, though Rtings hasn't reviewed this particular model.

Any advice is appreciated. :)

Decided to go P605 for a second TV Room. I'm not seeing a reason to go OLED or break the bank before 2019 models when next gen HDMi spec provides for noticeably better features. My 2016 Vizio P Series in my main room is still great but for the 4K HDR input lag.

The 940E has the X1 Extreme chipset which is Sony's flagship technology for televisions meaning it'll get a longer tail of support in terms of firmware updates. For example, the 940E is getting Dolby Vision support while the 900E will not. That's something you'll definitely want on a TV going forward. The 940E also has a much higher amount of dimming zones which is everything on a FALD display.

Whether you think it's worth the extra money depends on how seriously you take your televisions but the 940 is definitely a vastly superior model.

Anyone use TruMotion? What are your settings. Noticed some slight judder in some movies. RTing says to set it to User and have both at 0. Others have mentioned to raising them a few digits.

Edit: this is for B7A

Is there a solid way to be able to hook up my PS2 to my TCL S405? It has a component output I believe. Any other tips to get a good picture out of it? I've never tried using it on a 4K setup.

Anyone happen to know the best UK 4k TV for input lag / gaming? I got a Sony Bravia xe85 with ~21ms, but it has a stuck pixel and I was thinking of returning and getting a LG Sj850v with ~15ms input lag. Would there be any other better TV options, or would the 6ms difference there mean much when using the TV as a pc monitor?
