Good to see people participating in this thread :)

Who's y'alls favorite Latin artist/s and what kind of music do y'all prefer?

Kind of hard for me to decide but I'd say Joan Sebastian is probs my favorite. As far as genres go I pretty much listen to anything but Tejano is my favorite. I still remember watching The Johnny Canales Show as a little kid.

Shakira was never the same when she went blonde. Ojos Así has a lot of Arab influence (my country city has lots of Arab influence)

Ok Chilean Era, I'm dying to know... What does "weon" mean?? It's been bothering me since forever!
Like "dude", but it depends on the context. For example: "Que eres Güeón" means "You are stupid"; "Cómo estás güeón?" means "How are you dude?"; Güeón oh!" means "For f*ck's sake", you can use the three of them in one phrase like "El güeón güeón, güeón" = "That guy is stupid, dude". Then we have other variations like: "Dame esa güea" = "Give me that thing".

Lately I've been coming back to a few albums, Buena Vista Social Club Self Title, Carla Morrison Dejenme Llorar and Ondatropica Self Title. That Carla Morrison album though, its beautiful, she's like the latin Norah Jones.

I was browsing facebook in bed last night and saw a Los años maravillosos video about Kevin Arnolds love life, i jumped to amazon to order the DVD set abd left dissapointed upon finding out it doesn't include the amazing spanish dub, i don't think i could watch that show without McGyver narrating it.

Nice to see this thread.

Parents are both immigrants from Mexico. Born in NYC but living in Texas. This marks the year me and my six siblings have been making headway in learning how to cook the way mom does. I may have to visit during the weekend when tamale production goes into full swing.

With less than 2 days we are now at 9 pages. I will request this thread to be moved to Hangouts on friday :)

Had to remove the second nationality flags from the op because of the 40 image limit :(

Carla Morrison voice is sooo good. Easily one of my favorite recent singers.

I love rock and hard rock, actually.

For you guys living in Latin America (US too, I guess) have you noticed the influx of Venezuelans? Any bad experiences?
I had a venezuelan teacher in procedural criminal law last semester , she didn't knew anything about the chilean system. I have a lot of communist and socialist friends, in general they think venezuelans refugees are some kind of traitors, I prefer to not give them my opinion on that matter, I do think that every refugee and inmigrant who comes to Chile must be treated with the same dignity that Chileans were treated in other countries during Pinochet's dictatorship.

Uh, that doesn't sound too flattering...Also why was the teacher giving class about a system she doesn't know?

No bad experiences when I was living in Toluca/Mexico City. Actually, one of my closest friends' girlfriend is from Venezuela and she's pretty cool. One day she took us to a "hamburguesas venezolanas" restaurant and I was honestly not expecting much (because really? it's burgers) - but they were really good, lol.

She used to be a prosecutor back in Venezuela. To be fair, she knew A LOT about criminal theory, but it wasn't that useful in the class assigned to her.

And well... you know that the political landscape is pretty much the same across latin america. The left is with the left, the right with the right. Now, in general here in Chile, almost every leftist party, with the exception of the communist party, want's a political solution to the venezuelan crisis (the right wants a coup d'état).

A lot of politics here want a military intervention, but no one wants to be responsible. AKA Opposition Party in a nutshell. This year showed they lack any kind of backbone to their decisions, which made me want to leave.

I had some hope, but they have been crushed...This is even considering I'm vastly better off than many other people in my country. I have some family that have lost a lot of weight because they reduced their food to 1 or 2 single meals a day. There is no money paper, so commuting is a pain in the ass, many people just quit their jobs for one closer to them...

Basically, a fucking mess.

When I was in the Dominican Republic last year, I was told that there were a number of Venezuelan immigrants living in the country. However, from what I gathered, many of them are wealthy business owners and have contributed a lot to the country. So nothing particularly negative from what I remember.

It's really complicated for me to have an objective opinion to be fair (I'm a leftist myself). In one hand the economic and humanitarian crisis it's pretty obvious. But in other hand, the Chilean history has demostrated that, for example, food shortages were caused by right wing simpatizers and CIA agents during Allende's goverment to force a coup d'état. I don't know, I do hope you and your family can overcome this period.

I usually do not like LA music, but I like Chavela Vargas:

and Lila Downs:

My city, Tijuana, recently got a big influx of Haiti refugees. Some adapted really well, even opened their own restaurants, women specially got jobs at restaurants because they cook really well and adapted fast to Mexican food, others did not fare to well and have really bad jobs. They were expecting to cross to the USA, but with Trump that basically became impossibly.

Not sure if serious.

Here, some good music:

two of the five members are Argies, it counts :P

And one of Uruguay's most popular bands:

I'll post other great UY bands like Buitres, NTVG, etc, later

For you guys living in Latin America (US too, I guess) have you noticed the influx of Venezuelans? Any bad experiences?
There has been larger influx of Venezuelans here, and the ones I've met have been real nice people so no bad experiences on my end. As a bonus, there is one competing right now on the local MasterChef (mind that MC has become the highest rated show in Uruguay's history)
