Is apple giving away this shit?

What the hell am I reading?

Dat sense of entitlement tho

Now I'm starting to suspect you posted the link to concern troll now

You don't even have kids so if this is how Apple chooses To implement this for account secruity at this moment, it should be of no concern to you let alone an opinion that arises to the concern of "horrible decision Apple"

I have had this thing for two weeks and really don't know what to do with it besides swipe up. Like seriously, this and the face thing i'm not really sure what the highlight is.

I have this device for a couple of weeks as well now, it really doesn't seem like it should be 1000+ euros for this. The screen is nice yeah, but it's not that special compared to other oleds.

It's just a new fast phone that takes nice pictures.
I don't even show off the phone to anyone and really just use my above statement when I talk about it.

Will last me a few years before I upgrade, so it's worth it to me.

i upgraded to the X from a 5s so its a pretty massive improvement in all categories for me, excepting the comfort of holding it, which will never reach the peak of 5/5s/SE again

Those were too small for me. I skipped that gen(I had a 4plus at the time) and got the 6 plus when it came out. The only reason I upgraded this time is because I was having battery issues with it.

A little disappointing. I think I need to find new ways of using it that take advantage of it. With my 6 plus since I am not a photo guy I basically used it as a phone and messaging device.

Well one thing you can also do is swipe right on that bar at the bottom. That's the fast app switcher and really makes multitasking more pleasant.

I know most email apps are updated to X factor form now, I just wanted to leave my 2 cents regarding Edison Email. I gotta say it really good so far and super fast too. I get email notifications earlier than gmail app.

Damn, have to hit an apple store tomorrow.
I have lightbleeding thru my earspeaker thats super noticeable in the dark
Once i saw my sisters X and that it doesnt do that it pretty much pushed me to message apple support and they said there might be a problem with the seal
Turns out the lightbleeding from the notch is a known issue but mine in particular was very bright.
They swapped out my whole screen.
I think this screen they gave me is better in general, my other one felt like it had more noticeable pink edges.
So Im deff happy

I really don't know. Suddenly the battery started to drain so fast

There are multiple reports that the latest iOS update drains the battery like a fiend in some cases. I'm talking in the span of minutes.

That's funny you say that because my battery life was fucking awful today and I don't feel like I don't any more web browsing than I have on other days where I didn't have a problem. Spent probably 4 hours web browsing and some occasional music and my battery was at 12% by 5:30pm. I recall seeing battery tests saying that the battery should have lasted much longer than that web browsing. Like, I just did 45 minutes of web browsing on WiFi and my battery dropped 10%.

Discovered that I can reliably unlock my dad's X with my face. I think that's pretty funny.

Also very convenient because I'm always helping him with his phone. Wish Apple let us put in at least two difference faces

Yeah Ive noticed the battery on my phone tanking the last few nights. It's already down to 50% and I had it charging 5 hours ago. This is new. And I'm not using it much, just to glance any new notifications while I'm working

My Apple Watch S3 seems to drain super fast since I updated it. I haven't had it long so maybe I am not used to the battery life.

Mine was pretty shit yesterday (drained 20%+ while I was wearing it to bed, which NEVER happens). Quickly restarting it stabilized that drain, it seemed like. Only dropped around 10% doing an hour and a half walk with the heart rate sensor on the whole time, which is pretty good. Gonna go to bed at 100% and see what it is when I wake up, usually it's only a 2-5% drain.

As for the X battery issues, I haven't had anything like that, and I use this thing pretty heavily.

I just left home and the battery was %100, 5 minutes later it's %90...

people on macrumors says that draining the battery until it shuts off and THEN letting it charge for 8 hours fixes it?

dieter bohn's piece pointing out all the similarities that the iPhone X has with webOS phones is great - webOS and windows phone 7/8 both had a bunch of interface ideas that made me OS-jealous in a way that Android never has

also, I continue to be really curious to see how Apple's going to work out the Control Center stuff and also work out the gesture area/no home button thing on iPad Pro (given that the upward swipe is used to invoke the Dock as of iOS 11)

I'm sure they had a long look at this old Palm device when thinking about such brilliant gestures as swipe up and swipe up and to the right. I was especially impressed with swipe down from the top right myself.

I'll be be honest, I'm sure all these os's help each other, but most of the functionality is tech dependant and nothing else. We got face id simply because they couldn't get their touch id under the screen working in time. We got gestures because, again, no button. It has little to do with being inspired imo, and everything to do with what tech happened to (not) be available.

The phone is so fluid most of the time but every now and then I get some micro stutter and it's unbelievably annoying.

Really hope this gets fixed. Literally no reason for a phone this powerful to stutter (opening/switching between/closing apps).

The Palm Pre and webOS emerged under the leadership of Jon Rubinstein, an ex-Apple VP who hired away a bunch of Apple design employees shortly after the launch of the iPhone, and Matias Duarte was the design lead on it (he got hired away to be Android's design lead after the Pre cratered and failed). OS design geeks looooove a lot of the ideas behind webOS and I'm sure that's the case within Apple too, especially since a bunch of their colleagues made it.

We got face id simply because they couldn't get their touch id under the screen working in time.
Apple bought the company that made the Kinect like 5-6 years ago and had very likely been working on miniaturizing the tech for FaceID ever since. And hardware for the iPhone X was locked at least a year ahead of time.

The current consensus seems to be that the reports that Apple was trying to get TouchID under the screen were false and intended to manipulate the stock price, but I'd like to see them do that in the future as a form of secondary security; speeding up FaceID and making it more accurate will come pretty easily as systems on a chip speed up, but multiple biometrics will immediately make any iOS device *vastly* more secure than any single biometric possibly could (and would be relatively easy to design for - e.g. you could still have your phone only require authenticating one *or* the other in order to unlock for a balance of convenience and security, or you could require both for maximum security; you could give locked notes/photos/passwords/etc more security factors than simply unlocking the phone; et cetera).

So you think they would have opted for face id instead of a smaller notch like the Essential Phone if they had been guaranteed too have a working touch id solution instead? I doubt that.

I also don't want to misrepresent my feeling. Again, I'm sure they all get inspired by old ideas. Multitasking has been around since the 80s, after all. But I think pointing at one OS and device and thinking everything was derived from that is a gross simplification of the design process.

That said, I wish Apple would finally get inspired by Android's Notification System.

Yeah, my X has had horrible battery life the last few days, noticeably worse than when I first got it.

I keep on charging this thing multiple times a day, and it's pretty awful since I only have a 5w charger...

Well, the facts are the facts. The notch is certainly a design compromise, but FaceID is absolutely an upgrade over TouchID and I think Apple weighed the advantages and disadvantages on that a long time ago.

Bohm's piece isnt implying that the phone took everything from WebOS (or even necessarily that Apple imitated these features of it intentionally at all), just that it shares some important similarities that it's nice to see return.

edit: most especially a more complete and tactile approach to the apps-as-cards UI metaphor that has been all the rage for a few years
That said, I wish Apple would finally get inspired by Android's Notification System.
for real (though, to go back to webOS for a moment, a lot of design nerds think webOS's notification system is also still the best we've seen, even better than how modern Android handles it). can't do much worse than iOS currently handles it, regardless.

here's a video to illustrate what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zplVSI0M93o - recognize that this actually predates Android's notification drawer somewhat and looks way more modern than notification handling was on other platforms back in 2009

My parents were awesome enough to buy me an iPhone x for Christmas, but I haven't opened it yet.
I was planning on picking up the 256gb model, and they got me the 64gb version.

Anybody get the 64, regret not getting the bigger storage?

I'm still rocking my iPhone 6 that has 64gb, and it's been a struggle for this last year or so of dealing with no/low storage with apps, music, and photos.
So i'm worried this will be no different real quick. But I don't want seem unappreciative by asking for the other model (which id have no problems paying the difference). The struggle is real.

I was laying in bed this morning with phone at lowest light level, simply browsing Reddit for about 30 minutes and the phone dropped about 18%, plus the phone was warm to the touch. I think something is seriously wrong with the latest iOS 11 update. I need a phone that's going to last me the full day. I can't have an almost 20% battery decrease from simploy browsing Reddit. Come on, Apple. My Google Pixel 2 XL is looking REALL good right about now.

Turning on the pictures iCloud feature solved all my storage problems (I have a 64gb 8 plus). I have a lot of pictures on my phone but they store the full Rez pictures in the cloud and keep lower Rez, massively reduced sized ones on my phone. If I need the full Rez pic it'll then pull it from the cloud. If you're someone that needs a ton of music on your phone then maybe you'll run into some issues but I have a nice catalogue of music and a lot of apps and still have a solid 30 gigs of space left.

Sold! I have 30 gigs worth of music too. And that was a major concern, that id kill half of my storage... but you sold me!

I just checked, I have 3700 pictures and 204 videos and w/ the iCloud storage enabled, they take up 500mb on my phone. It does cost $1 a month though for 50gb storage, don't know pricing above that.

Probably going to pickup an iPhone X tomorrow. Currently thinking about the 64gig option, especially since I pay for the 50gig iCloud storage plan, but the 256gig is tempting. Currently only using 55 gigs on my iPhone 7 after an entire year though, so 64 is probably the better option for me.

When I was visiting the family, my mom dropped my iPhone X onto concrete. Time slowed down and I think my life briefly flashed before my eyes. Fortunately the Apple silicone case did its job, but a nice chunk got taken out of a corner. If it had been naked I probably would've had a shattered screen and a big dent.

If you have iCloud Keychain turned on for both the iPhone and your Mac, the wifi credentials will be shared between them.

Just got mine today. Upgrading from a 6 of 3 years. Face ID seems to work very well so far. Not had much resistance. It's much snappier and liking the extras features new to the iPhone since the 6. It's noticeably heavier though but the extra screen space is great and I don't notice the notch. It's bigger without feeling bigger. Not had much play around with the camera yet but I love it all so far. Battery seems ok but maybe not as much as I'd hoped coming from the 6 after so long.
