I've thought for a while now that we should do an official yearly box office contest with prizes and whatnot, and I'm gonna go ahead now and put my money where my mouth is. I'm starting this thread/contest, and putting a $50 gift card to the gaming network of your choice (right now, choices would be Steam, XBL, PSN, eShop, iTunes or Google Play, but I'm all ears if people want to suggest other places) as the top prize. If anyone else wants to donate a prize, they're more than welcome to contact me.

As for the rules, you just list, in order, what you think are going to be the 5 domestic movies of next year. You don't have to list what you think they'll gross, just the ranking. Movies released at the end of the year will have their 2019 grosses count (so an American Sniper-like run would count for 2018). Winners will be determined by a points system. You get 2 points for each movie you pick that ends up in the top 5, no matter its placement. You also get points for picking the correct movie at each position (1 point for picking the correct 5th place movie, 2 for 4th, all the way to 5 for 1st place). In the event of a tie in points, the first tiebreaker will add up the ranking of the movies each person picked that didn't make the top 5, and whomever ends up with the lowest number from that. If there is a tie after that, then for the second tiebreaker will be predicting the opening weekend of a movie releasing between January and March of 2019 at my discretion. Entries are going to be accepted for the next 2 weeks, up until Saturday, January 6th at 11:59PM Eastern Time (4:59AM GMT on January 7th, I believe).

1. Avengers: Infinity War
2. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
3. The Incredibles 2
4. Deadpool 2
5. Solo: A Star Wars Story (I'm assuming this moves to Dec, or else I'd put Black Panther 5)

Edit: Really surprised at all these Ready Player One picks...it'll be lucky to even be top 10.

Certainly could, but I would bet it doesn't.

I think even with the creative turmoil, it'll end it being a rock solid adventure comedy with some heavy handed heart, and I do believe it'll perform.

To be honest, I think Smurf has Incredibles 2 and RPO backwards, but near enough.

I feel like, outside of the obvious, there's going to be some young adult thing and non-Incredibles animated feature that make the list, though I don't for the life of me know what those would be. (Not my demo.)

1) Avengers: Infinity War
2) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
3) The Incredibles 2
4) Deadpool 2
5) Solo

This list was generated before I saw what FTF wrote (damn you). However, if we get the Solo teaser before the cutoff, I might mix it up a bit. For now, I think that Solo and Deadpool 2 will both be in the $300-350M range. I had a few others near that, so I wouldn't be surprised to see upsets. Namely Black Panther. Maybe the Grinch. I might have considered Aquaman more strongly before November, but I don't know now.

  3. Incredibles 2
  4. Solo: A Star Wars Story
  5. Mary Poppins Returns
Dark horse candidate for that #5 spot. But I think Deadpool 2 won't match the first, Ready Player One is gonna bomb, and none of the other superhero films will touch $300m. Poppins can clean up in the usual Jan/Feb dead season. Only thing is not sure if audiences will respond well to Emily Blunt in the role since the character was so recently well received with Michael Rooker.

I have no idea where people are getting Ready Player One and Incredibles 2 from. Both might do good but top 5 of the year?

Incredibles 1 adjusts to about $375M. Of course, there's definitely the chance that it is more Monsters University than Toy Story 3/Finding Dory.

1. Infinity War

5. 2 Jurassic 2 World

Ready Player One isn't going to be in a top 10 domestic or worldwide box office, let alone domestic.

That small Incredibles 2 teaser is the second most viewed trailer of the year, behind only Infinity War. There's a ton of hype for it.

I agree with Ready Player One though.

After the failure of TMNT 2, Transformers 5 and Warcraft, you'd think Hollywood would be wary about movies like RPO that lean too heavily into nerd culture.

1. Infinity War. Considering the build up (See Deathly Hallows after a similar 10 year build up), the teaser reactions/views, and just Marvel, it's going to be this. We also don't have a main episode Star Wars film this year. It'll be Infinity War.
2. Solo: A Star Wars Movie. Star Wars is still going to make bank. But Solo doesn't have the build up that Infinity War has.
3. Incredibles 2. Finding Dory made $486 Million domestic after more than a decade off. A lot of people want to see this film. Superheroes. Solo may be a weaker Star Wars movie, but I think it's going to edge a little bit over this because Star Wars marketing is a beast. No question in my mind though that this will be the big animated movie of 2018.
4. Black Panther. It'll have the Wonder Woman effect thanks to (assuming) good reviews and a lack of major competition for a few weeks.
5. Deadpool 2. Marketing is going to be strong and bring in big numbers. BUT, I suspect Solo's second week is going to hurt it a tiny bit in the beginning. Then Incredibles 2 breaks it's legs later. Playing release date chicken against Star Wars wasn't the smartest idea. Even if it is Solo.

I can easily see 2,3,4 shifting depending on reviews and how others around it do. I can not see Infinity War not taking number 1 unless the reviews are awful. Like BvS bad and the legs drop horribly in week 2.

Having said that. We've seen wild cards before. Maybe Disney does such a good job with Mary Poppins marketing and shakes up the Top 5. It's possible. I don't see it being likely though.

I suspect it's going to be a Disney takes the Top 5 year for 2018 and 2019 though. I don't think Jurassic World is going to be as strong this time around. But I could be wrong.
