Got some AirPods from my girlfriends' parents for Christmas. Really liking them so far. I'm getting a bit of pain in my right ear since I'm not quite used to the hard "shell" of the bud, but hopefully I'll get used to it.

Swung by the Apple Store today while finishing my Christmas shopping. Got to check out an iPhone X but...man, I think the iPhone 8 Plus stole the show for me. I have a regular 6 now, but my next upgrade, I might go 8 Plus. That screen...
Airpods surprising the heck out of me. Absolutely adore them. Zolo Liberty+ died on me a couple days after I received them, decided to just go with the big boys. Zero regrets

On the topic of airpods. I just picked some up for my Christmas gift to myself. Seemingly out of stock everywhere I lucked out at my local Walmart and they had at least 6 more pairs.

Not sure if this is an iOS 11 thing (probably) or an iPhone X thing, but anyone else get micro-stutters after about a week without resetting your phone? Animations will "hiccup" and/or play twice, when rotating from portrait to landscape the screen will flash and flicker, stuff like that?
iOS 11 issue. Happened to me a couple times on my 8+. But haven't noticed it or the the framerate drop issue since a few updates, didn't really pay attention which one fixed it for me though.

Has anyone here tried the headphone adapter that comes bundled with the phone?

Unfortunately, my car (2012) does not have native bluetooth - so I was hoping to use the adapter to use an aux cable for my car. After plugging it in, it sounds like hot garbage. Lots of background noise.

Strange.

I do exactly the same thing in my car and it sounds fine. Using the lightning adapter and an aux cable. Try another sound source with your aux cable.

I used to love my AirPods but I don't think I've used them once since I got some good bluetooth cans last black friday. The purpose of the cans was mostly for TV use but I can't help but use them for everything else as well, including going out on walks. Fantastic sound, comfort, features, battery, I can even adjust the volume.

I guess that eventually the novelty will wear off and the superior convenience (portability, size, discretion, device switching) of the AirPods will make them useful again for me, but IDK some people just always use cans. Maybe I'm one of those and didn't know yet.

I'd bet inbox isn't as popular as all the other apps. I switched back to Gmail a while back and never looked back, it's much better.

Yeah I switched to gmail and honestly it's laid out pretty much the same so I think I'll just delete inbox

Any tips for better low light photos and video? Mine are full of noise. I don't mind taking more control if it helps

If Apple adds proper search that's even just on par with whatsapp in 12, i'll be happy. The dream would be discord-level search abilities but we're never getting that.

Underexpose and lift the shadows in post. You'll still get noise but it'll look much more pleasant and less blotchy.

Thanks. Do I need to look into manual camera apps, or is just dragging the exposure down in the default app enough?
I'd consider a manual app if you care about your photos because the manual apps can capture in RAW (a more versatile, better capture quality for editing though bigger file size) while iPhone's default app captures in a type of JPEG compressed.

But that depends on how casually you like to take pics. For serious travel pics it's ideal to have the RAW option.

Check out either Halide or ProCam 5

Just can't get behind blowing that much money on some mediocrel-ly sounding earbuds. Every time I see someone wearing them, I judge really hard.

I just don't want to step down from the sound quality of my current Sony earbuds or my MDR over-the-ear headphones. The moment Apple drops AirPods that are acclaimed for matching the higher-end earbuds, I'm all in. I do fear how much they'll cost, though.

Airpod's aren't going to get better any time soon. For a non-sealing earbud of that size they are about as good as you can make them sound imo. They have a pretty nice well balance sound signature / curve, decent bass, loud. And I'll take non-sealing earbuds over sealing IEMs any day of the week that I'm not on a flight or something.

I left them at work one day and had to go back to my old, (award winning), sennheiser momentum m2 Iei's IEMs on the bus the next morning, after almost a year of Airpod use. Sound quality between them is negligible, in fact, the senns have a weird sibilance to vocals / spoken word that I don't like. The convenience difference is off the charts of course. I literally can't go back to wired now except at my computer (where I have some sennheiser hd25-1 ii over ears).

You should at least try them.

Well, obviously a manual camera app will allow you to control ISO and shutter speed so if you're capturing stills at night and use a tripod you can definitely get noticeably better results. Plus RAW shots allow you to work with more data in post as pointed out above.

How the hell do you turn this thing on? Holding the side button does nothing. Do I have to charge it first? Just got it from the Apple store.

Certainly odd, it doesn't come out of the factory without at least a half charge. Maybe a demo or returned phone?

Alright thanks, I let it charge for a bit and it boots up now. Didn't seem to be a returned phone because it was in pristine condition with all the stickers on, but maybe they just clean it very well haha.

Blue shift is definitely noticeable, which is very disappointing after fearing for it on the Pixel 2 XL and consequently not buying that phone. Are there reports of iPhone X's suffering from the same?

Maybe I'll check out the blue shift on the demonstration models in the store tomorrow, I'm uncertain whether it is just a fear because of internet of mine or this particular model just has bad viewing angles (which could also explain the dead battery, it being a probable returned phone).

All OLED's have this. But to be honest it's not really that bad on the X, especially with True Tone enabled.

it's actually sunny today and I forgot how damn nice this screen still works in the sun. I guess that's just the nature of the oled?

John Siracusa on the ATP podcast made a very good point about the screen - check what happens when you view an IPS display off-axis - everything gets much dimmer. Not great in bright sunlight to say the least. It's much of a muchness and if anything the screen is more legable for longer on the X's screen than my IPS iPhones.

The difference with OLEDs is the blue light doesn't dim at the same speed as red and green off-axis so everything on screen shifts towards blue.

I think it only becomes an issue even worth thinking about if the screen is an outlier in the sense the Pixel 2 XL is. Otherwise this is classic case of techies hand-wringing for the sake of hand-wringing.

So for those of you who stayed on 11.1.2 or lower, there's seems to be a jailbreak right around the corner.
Can't wait to remove unnecessary bars and other nonsense.

I don't get why Apple will just let us remove the home bar with stock iOS. It's not that big of a deal, but I mean... I know the gesture works. I don't need this disruptive bar there for eternity.

If it's an app or game I use for extended periods of time I toggle off the bar via Guided Access (which locks the phone to the current application). Toggle on= triple power button press. Toggle off=double power button press+Face ID.

It's in Accessibility.

I got the Ravpower wireless charger for cheap and so far it seems to be great. I'm still not sure if it's REALLY charging at 7.5, but the fact that I don't have to plug it in to charge is fantastic. I would recconend it.

Does this phone scratch easily and need a screen protector?
Commented earlier on the page about mine, no scratches, hairline sized or otherwise, on space grey. A colleague has a silver equivalent though and that one has visible lines on the sides. So it might differ between models.

Wow. Gonna use that while ebook reading. Thank you!

What are people doing for cases? Currently just using the Apple Leather, not going crazy about it, but I guess it gets the job done.

Also - as this is the first time I'm rejoining the apple since iPhone 4(?), I have to ask - is there any easy method of moving my songs over (iTunes incorrectly flags songs here and there).

Thought I was just imagining it, but yeah, there does seem to be an additional split second before I'm able to swipe up.

Maybe they've tightened the pattern matching after all the reports of relatives and masks unlocking phones?

I'm already sweeping up by the time the screen turns on so I instantly log in, haven't noticed anything being slower.
