Guys, halp.

I want to listen to podcasts on my phone on my way to work, but many of them have really, really low audio levels. As does my shitty cell phone. I have an aux input in my car, and was thinking of connecting my phone to that. But I have no idea which kind of cable to buy. What do I do?

If you're on iOS, Overcast has a good voice boost/equalizer feature. It also mixes audio differently for clarity when it's playing out of your phone built in speaker.

Yeah, so that new Crimetown episode is crazy good. It's about a dude who's a bigger monster than just about everyone else who was featured.

Some great suggestions in here.

I'm going to try out Dirty John and Magnus Archives this weekend.

So glad to see this list again. A couple things I listen to that are not on the massive list.

Small Town Murder - Great show and one of the few I can't wait for each week. It's two stand-up comics who talk about real murders in small towns. Real facts, nothing made up. But boy do they make so great jokes about parts of it. They never make light of the victims and they still have a warning at the start of every episode to remind people this is a comedy podcast even with it being based on facts. If you like true crime stuff but with a touch of fun this is great.

Trivial Warfare - It's a trivia podcast, think pub trivia but in podcast form. Great host, with great rotating guests. It started out a bit rough in it's early days in terms of quality of production. But the newer episodes are great and the trivia is really good. Never super tough but never so easy I roll my eyes at it.

The Secret Cabal Gaming Podcast - It's a board gaming podcast. I love these guys, I have even donated product from work to them for giveaways. I love the format of the show and the production values are top notch.

I'd like to give a nod to two very small podcasts. The first I've been listening to for about two years now, but it is called Worst Episode Ever and they watch and talk about the worst episodes of the Simpsons, trying to find which is the absolute worst. The current worst is Kamp Krustier. Sadly, this is a terrible time to recommend them because they are on a brief break for the holidays and because one of the hosts is moving and the other just had a child. But, here's a list to their site of Simpsons Rankings. Second one is something I discovered about two weeks ago called The Bechdel Cast, which talks about movies old, popular movies (mostly stuff 90s onwards) and discusses female representation in them and if they actually pass the Bechdel test.

Help.

I've binged all of Reply All and Science VS.

Need more. Please. Any like those?

I think Radiolab is ass but lots of people like it. Similar non-fiction storytelling kind of feel. They did a spin-off pod about the Supreme Court called More Perfect which I mostly liked.

I dropped off Planet Money a long time ago but it was good at entry-level finance / economics stuff. (it's good but I have several much more in-depth Econ pods on my queue)

If you're into history trivia, check out 2017's Best Podcast, Something True (from Idle Thumbs). Nonfiction narratives, short eps, excellent production.

Thanks! (I help publish that show, and though I have nothing to do with it's actual creation, I love it and am proud of it.) Hope you're still subscribed to the Something True RSS as there's a holiday special coming soon.

Cumtown is probably the best podcast airing right now, and a huge part of that is the high quality fan created content:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvrrwFlfGQM
http://time.com/4709592/best-podcasts-2017/

No Cum Town
No Chapo
No Hollywood Handbook
No comedy shows at all.

I don't think so Tim.
I feel like Cum Town would be too much for 95% of Era

Maybe more people would listen if they got rid of that bug Adam

Hardcore History is currently my favorite podcast. I'm catching up on them all as a first time listener. Wrath of the Khans is amazing.
I guess that means you got all the paid episodes too. Death Throes of the Republic is my favorite HH series

I recommend The Memory Palace as a complementary series. HH for the epic hours-long series, while Memory Palace is like an espresso shot of history. Nate DiMeo is a great storyteller, and able to really portray a person, moment, era of history concisely yet eloquently.

Somehow - despite being quite up to speed with the podcasting world - I missed all the Dirty John hype. Only found out about it yesterday. I've subscribed and got the first episode downloaded.

What are some good educational podcasts about tech? Or maybe basic life skills like taxes, investing, etc)

I'm guessing most people here use apps on their phone to manage their podcasts. But does anyone here their desktop to download and manage podcasts? What would you recommend? Anything besides iTunes?

Interested in having podcasts auto-download to a server each day, which we would then have available to us remotely, but I'm only used to managing podcasts through Pocket casts on my phone.

Anyone got any good science podcast recommendations? Preferably astronomy, that shit is my jam. I already listen to The Skeptic's Guide, StarTalk, The Infinite Monkey Cage and Astronomy Cast (all highly recommended), but I want more!

I don't, but I hear the Pocket Casts web client is good. Playback state is synced with the app.

EDIT: Server, hmm. Why do you want it on a server if you're gonna access it remotely anyway? Seems like you could just cut out that middleman. PC Web is an additional purchase though.

I like Pocket Casts so that's good to hear. Probably did use the desktop app once upon a time.

And I'd use a server for a couple reasons:

- have podcasts played through our AVR at home (main reason)
- saves space on our phones

By "remotely" I meant away from the desktop. That could mean in the kitchen or at work.

You don't happen to have an AVR with built-in Chromecast or other streaming options? That could solve it. Guess you'd be using DLNA to stream from the server?

And it doesn't have to take up space, you can just stream directly with Pocket Casts on your phone. I never download episodes.

Saw this podcast recommended by Justin McElroy on Thrillist's Best 2017 podcasts list, every episode is 12 hours long

12 Hour Day
This year I fell into a deep 12 Hour Day rabbit hole. If you don't know the show, comedians and TV professionals J.D. Amato and Connor Ratliff turn the mics on... and don't turn them off for 12 hours. It's a wild, sprawling show that encompasses silly anecdotes, deep discussions of life, death, and art, and the occasional stealth nap. It's amazing, hypnotic listening.

We have a Chromecast dongle on the AVR, which we use for podcasts, but the issue is Zone 2 can't do HDMI inputs. So what's available to us via streaming are featured programs (eg, Spotify or Tunein) and the media server. There is a way to do podcasts but the UI is awful and many podcasts aren't available.

And you're right that you can just stream. Forgot about that as I'd always auto-downloaded while connected to Wi-Fi. So that's irrelevant

Sure, I enjoy checking out podcasts by the community here

Thanks!

If anyone wants to check out my podcast, it's So Wizard Podcast. Three friends discuss the world of nerd, weekly.

Just search the title on ITunes or Spotify (or just about any other podcatching app)

We just dropped our best/worst of 2017 episode yesterday.

Thanks!

Is anyone else listening to "The Sitdown?" Three comedians (Mike Recine, Frank Terranova, Matt Anderson) talk about organized crime. It's sort of The Dollop-esque, but more conversational and way less informative.
