(post also responds to Kaytee above)
I think at this point it's that we got more with the "imagined form" of Stella than we got in actuality with Luna. People who said Luna seemed like a damsel in distress side character in a game full of dudes were.... sadly right. I sort-of liked the Noctis x Luna thing from a Shakespearean tragedy perspective (that whole section of the game was about kicking Noctis while he's down). But in the end thought it was a lame move between her screen time vs. the large amount of media about her character (pretty sure Cindy gets more time onscreen). I then thought it stupider than even if she didn't die against Ardyn, some magical-fictional nonsense disease was 'draining her lifeforce' or whatever.

AND C'MON in a world with cellphones, they communicated with magical dogs and notebooks??
....Luna's at least on her A-game fashion-wise. I want just about anything she wore in that game (except her Sia haircut from when she was a kid).

I'd love the hell out of a Luna DLC. I feel she's earned it with the amount of bullshit the story put her through. And because yeah I'm still #TeamStella since the reality with Luna was underwhelming (and a shame since I want to like Luna way more than I do). I'd take one with Aranea though (it's the least amount of work for the dev team....and writing team :P)

I think the FF series otherwise did 'okay' creating strong females that don't rely on brute force. Garnet and Yuna come to mind as those who are more inherently passive or timid but knew how to say and do things that were incredibly inspiring. And Tifa for being a rare heroine who takes care of a boyfriend gone into some extreme catatonic state (with how far he was gone, she probably wiped his ass off-screen too).

I also want to make it clear that it's perfectly okay to dislike Luna but my main frustration is just the way people go about it especially when it's hypocritical. But yeah I definitely agree with the things that you're saying! There is a lot of stupid shit in XV (some friends and I were laughing about Jared just a few days ago) and the fact that Cindy of all characters has more screen time than Luna is just...frustrating.

With Stella...I get why people liked her to an extent but seeing some fans (specifically white female fans) feel personally outraged because of this characters removal is strange to me. Like I saw someone on the old site say that XV's female characters were an insult to the entire series and to me, a black woman, that's extremely obnoxious considering FF hasn't any brown or black female characters in its 30 year history at all. To me that's a bigger problem than one character being cut and her replacement not being written well enough.

It honestly kind of makes me feel like some white fans only care about their representation and if brown/black women are left behind oh well. Because regardless of what happens with the women in XV, XVI will probably have 'strong' female characters and everything will return back to normal...yet I still won't have representation so great I guess? The only character in FF that's 'sort of' looks like me is a bunny lady whose entire species is sexualized which is just...great representation. Anyway, I probably sound bitter af (because I am lmao) but I wanted to give more context as to why the Stella situation annoys me. I made a post on my blog about it so maybe I'll post it here when I'm on a computer.

Today I had to hang up on an irate customer and my manager totally backed me up. What a good feeling.

Manager: That guy is a dick, he isn't getting what he wants.

If you don't mind, could you expand on this? I'm really just curious and not trying to be confrontational, because I've seen this opinion a few times. I didn't feel like we ever knew much about Stella, since she was only shown in a few trailers and basically a context-less cutscene.

I think Square's biggest mistake with Luna was advertising her as a core character (which I think they only did due to backlash at having an all-male main party. They should've just stood up for what they were doing imo). She's really more of a side character, and you're totally right that you spend more time with, like, every single other female character.

I do like her more than a lot of people seem to, but I'm kind of over the whole "virginal, innocent, self-sacrificing" woman thing in Square games too...

So what is this game Fortnite about? Is it good? https://www.twitch.tv/Reekal
Mainly just linking because it's a friend from another forum I was a member of since I was a teen.

I play it, though not much lately - have been for a few months, though. It's a zombie survival/basebuilding game with a pretty interesting look. Cartoony yet creepy. Peppy robots provide support. It's fun and has a full battle royale mode as well as the mission mode. Can play with others or alone in both.

Ladies, can you recommend a good alternative to TMZ? I've been going to their site for too long considering how fucking awful they are. Them supposedly fucking with Terry Crews made me realize I have to make a change. I used to read Perez Hilton some years ago but having to go through 10+ pages of content a day, most of which was useless, was a pain in the ass. Something that just has the biggest celebrity gossip news like TMZ except not being TMZ would be great.

Would aggregates bother you in this regard? It may help you find new/variations of other sources. Not sure if you know this place, but just in case, I check-in to OhNoTheyDidn't when new events pop up and they usually cite multiple sources. TMZ does pop up, but you have the option of getting the gist of the info without actually visiting the site itself. Twitter takes are pretty fast there. The users and topics are mostly women-centric, though you'll find a few trolls, scary stans (I find this entertaining, personally), and really heavy-handed misandrists there sometimes. They throw in book posts, sometimes gaming ones, and other geeky things but it's more rare.

Um, also hi. New to the women-thread. It took two months for me to get activated here due to technical stuff. I wasn't a very active or good user over at the other place. Hoping to contribute better here instead of being a shady recluse.

Starting this YouTube channel is more work than I thought. I never realized how awkward it is trying to talk to a camera. I want to look away, but I can't, I'm noticing how often I say um, and stumbling over words with pauses trying to think of what I'm supposed to say next. This shit is hard and I haven't gotten to editing anything yet and I probably have to do some image editing as well for my thumbnail and a logo.

Aggregates would be fantastic. As long as I don't have to give TMZ ad money, I don't mind if they cite them. Thank you and welcome!

Yeah, one of the only good perks of working here. Now if only it was closer to my house and paid more :P

Starting this YouTube channel is more work than I thought. I never realized how awkward it is trying to talk to a camera. This shit is hard and I haven't gotten to editing anything yet and I probably have to do some image editing as well for my thumbnail and a logo.

It gets easier with time. I wasn't completely comfortable until about 30 videos in on my own channel. If you have long pauses you can edit them out (unless you are doing something where you can't, in which case, it's just practice).

One tip I can give is that you don't always have to stay on one topic if you can't think of anything to say. Tangent over to something you can talk about for a bit and loop back over to your original thought. People are always going to watch a YouTube channel for the person, not the content, so you can get away with any topic you desire.

Right now I'm in the middle of transition phase, and I was worried about not doing it because I might alienate my old subs, but that's when I realized that I can always gain new ones. :P

There was sort of Donna from X, but she wasn't part of your party and her outfit was trash. I know what you mean even though I haven't heard of these Stella complaints. I do find it funny how white people seem to say that Fran is black, but I never hear any black people claim Fran.

I was mostly focusing on party members but Donna and that frog professor from XV (I forgot her name) definitely do count representation as far as NPCs. As far as Fran, I've talked to a few other black fans who consider her black and it seems to be mostly out of being desperate for representation. I have noticed that a lot of non-black people are quick to label Fran as black and it makes me go :/// every time.

I did because, like you said, there was very little representation for black women back then and I liked her personality wise. I was way into elves and she was pretty much a mystical elf with rabbit ears.

Representation isn't amazing now, but it is nice to be able to point out female black protagonists in games that aren't sexy bunny lady or that obscure ps1 game Urban Chaos.

It is not always about the skin color. Admittedly, I haven't played through any FF game however I did watch FF15's animes and my boyfriend play. And 15 for example clearly gave a stage to social issues such as mobbing. (Not as much in the game as in the anime.) I do assume this is something the entire series does.

And if Fran is really the only character with a darker skin (which she does have, even if she's not black her appearance differs from other npcs in that aspect) she surely would have been picked on and mobbed, so she'd be seen as someone who could understand those aspects from an emotional aspect. In a fantasy setting it is just natural to create your own outcasts/minorities.

Probably the Elves from Tales of Symphonia are still "more black" than her because they have a community and culture, which she cant develop as she's all alone?

By 'mobbing' do you mean bulling? Besides Prompto being implied (I can't remember if they outright showed it or not) to be bullied in the anime because of his weight, I don't remember any bullying being addressed in XV. Prejudiced is addressed in X with the Al Bhed but that's it from the top of my head.

And if Fran is really the only character with a darker skin (which she does have, even if she's not black her appearance differs from other npcs in that aspect)

I don't really know why you're specifically pointing this out to me? I'm black; I'm practically the same color as her so I'm well aware of this.

She surely would have been picked on and mobbed, so she'd be seen as someone who could understand those aspects from an emotional aspect. In a fantasy setting it is just natural to create your own outcasts/minorities.

And no, she's not the only Viera in the game (they're all various shades of brown/black and very conveniently the male and female viera live separately so we never see a male viera in game, only the sexy females!) nor does she get picked on. She (and other viera) who leave the 'Wood' are looked down upon by other Viera and can never return to it so that's kind of her 'arc' (if you can call it that) in the game.

The whole point of bringing up Fran is that brown/black people shouldn't have to create their 'minorities' in non-human characters. Why should my representation be a character that's literally based off an animal while the rest of the party members are all white and human? This is especially insulting when this series has had human representation for brown/black men, yet brown/black women are forced to point at the highly sexualized bunny women who are also fetishized in and out of the game and say 'Hey, that's our representation! Isn't it great!"

No offense, but you're just noticing this now? It's why (as a black woman) I'll never call myself a feminist, it's been transparently about white women's empowerment since the days of Susan B. Anthony. And it's why I don't go looking for representation in Japanese games, they will always be shameless about worshiping white beauty standards, for me it's just something to deal with and laugh at.

Edit: Sorry if that came off more dismissive than I wanted it to

No, I've just been more vocal about it lately instead of being quiet about. Even if I was, not everyone is instantly 'woke'. People realize these things at different points in their lives. I know I don't have the same views on race, feminism, etc. as I did even just a couple of years ago. I do agree with you though especially regarding white feminism, And if we ever did get an actual black woman as a playable character in FF (that's not a bunny lady or something), I accepted a long time ago that she would probably be a bad stereotype like Barret.

This is something I've been thinking about quite often, I have no personal experience with this, but I think if you have someone you know behind the camera, they don't have to do anything with the camera, you just have this person standing there so you talk to them and not really to the camera it should make it less awkward and more natural. Have you tried anything like that? I don't know if it would be possible for you to try obviously.

Yeah I meant bullying, and it was a huge topic in his part of the animation series. It was mentioned once in the game, but you could miss it if you didnt watch the anime.

I don't really know why you're specifically pointing this out to me? I'm black; I'm practically the same color as her so I'm well aware of this.
Because you wrote that you label her "black" out of desperation rather than because you identify with her because you want to.

The whole point of bringing up Fran is that brown/black people shouldn't have to create their 'minorities' in non-human characters.
You mean they shouldnt need to identify with non-human characters?

Honestly, I personally more often than not identify myself with characters that are none-human than vice versa. Then again I dont care what race they are but rather look at their personalities.

The elve Rain from ToS is a good example or Edna from Tales of Zesteria who are, unlike Rita who would be a classic case for me.

I love and strongly identify with Quill the ASL using mouse because for obvious reasons. Who cares that he's an animal instead of a human person? It is great that the gaming industry is going new ways and includes more and more minorities in their games. They dont need to translate 1:1 from real life especially in fantasy context.

It sucks when you know that a cast was kept white on purpose or it truly feels forceful, but I have that issue more often with tv shows than videogames to be honest. Videogames almost always have minorities included, one way or the other.

And in FFXII the entire main party is from a desert nation and yet they're all pale white and blonde. Brown skinned characters don't have to be justified, of course, but if you were ever to have an FF where it would actually make more sense for the main party to have darker skin...

Happy holiday season, my wonderful ladies of ERA :).
Any fun plans for the holidays?

I'm down with a cold today, but assuming I recover I have to work all week :( Luckily I already have basically all of my christmas shopping done. Next week I have a bunch of friends in town, so I'll probably try to spend time with as many of them as I can.

I wouldn't mind some snow this year. It's been a while since we had any and it doesn't feel like Christmas without it.

So that Jonathan Blow thread.... I linked to it in another community and someone got banned for misogynistic comments. Thing is, people are saying worse stuff here than that guy. And nothing is done to them. I'd love to know what methodology the mod team works on when it comes to these things. Misogyny should be an automatic warning at least.

That shit is so stupid and makes me so mad.

I'm in charge of 6 shops for high level electronics. Weapons Systems, radars, fire control systems, missile launchers, automatic gattling guns. 16 of my 31 techs are female. Not including myself or my direct supervisor who is also a woman. I have a BSEE, she has a BSEE and a BSCE. All of my techs have at a minimum associates in mathematics. Everyone of us has DoL certifications in at a minimum electronics technician and electronics mechanics. And that is just in my professional life. That's not even getting into my hobbies. yeah, we're just all genetically predisposed to not be into this stuff. Fuck you

It's honestly demoralising trying to discuss or read most topics related to women in video game forums. Era and the old forum were a bit better in the sense that at least there were more people speaking out against sexist and misogynistic views, but it still feels like it's a bunch of men talking over you a lot of the time. I applaud the people who have the mental fortitude to keep discussion going in these threads, because I get worn out quickly.

Happy Holidays, I'm working for most of the holidays sadly, but it is what it is.

Same. I get Xmas Day off but that's about it. Working in an office environment so it's not like people need us, but I imagine citizens would flip if governmental workers got the week between Xmas and New Year's off paid :p

At least it'll be quiet in the office lol

Era and the old forum were a bit better in the sense that at least there were more people speaking out against sexist and misogynistic views, but it still feels like it's a bunch of men talking over you a lot of the time. I applaud the people who have the mental fortitude to keep discussion going in these threads, because I get worn out quickly.

That's exactly what it is. It's just a bunch oi men, first - assuming you are another guy who is white-knighting, second - talking all over you.
It gets exhausting and frankly just seeing that post enrages me so I don't even go into gaming side while shit like that festers on the front page.

I've been in IT for almost 2 decades and they can take their "biology" arguments and go choke on a porcupine.

The negativity surrounding 'white knighting' is strange to me. Same as the anti-'SJW' rhetoric. It's as if having empathy for other human beings is a bad thing to some people.

I can't tell if we're making progress or regressing when it comes to certain topics, but I think we are making some progress... albeit slowly. It's a shame that there's so much backlash against said progress, but that's always been the case in history. When you're used to having it better than others, equality seems like oppression. At least that's how it is if you lack basic empathy, I guess.

Regarding men talking over women, I've seen men explain how a woman's anatomy works in the presence of women (usually to justify excessive jiggle physics as being 'realistic'), amongst other things, so yeah... things can get pretty frustrating over on the gaming side.

White knighting is annoying. It's for a few reasons. A lot of is disingenuous. They are the "nice guys" who think coming to women's defense earns them some kind of credibility and they think it will make us swoon all over them. Then there are a lot of dudes who don't understand the issues and nuances. You can often see these guys when they back pedal after making arguments with huge fallacies and are just jumping on because they "respect women" and then there are the dudes who defend women by talking over them, and "Actually"-ing and thinking they know everything. It's rarely an actual empathy.

I've seen that term thrown around (by guys) the second another guy speaks up about sexism, or defends a woman in any way. I agree that there are disingenuous people who are putting on a front for ulterior motives (or just generally ignorant/misinformed), but there are also other people who genuinely have empathy and respect for their fellow human beings. When I see men throwing it around it's usually with a lot of venom, as if they have betrayed their own gender or something.

Fuck you

That is cool as hell

White knighting is a bit weird to me because I don't mind men defending women if they are genuinely being empathic, but it also stems from the idea that women need a strong man to help them instead of being able to defend themselves on their own. I dunno...
