After reading this thread, I'm feeling more and more certain that Retro's mystery project is going to be some sort of sci-fi game with a heavy focus on online multiplayer.

Man, 2017 is an amazing year for the release schedule, but I gotta wonder about 2018. Looking a bit thin right now. . .

But, if MP4 actually comes out then who cares. That's enough for me.

Thank you for this thread.

After looking through all of the devs, it makes the most sense to me if Next Level is making Metroid Prime 4.

Oh neat my account just got approved, trying to figure out where the 3rd party switch game thread is but since i can't make a thread just gonna say that i heard from a good source that Dark Souls Remaster is coming to the switch and other platforms next year.

That would be so cool, Never played the first Dark Souls game and if that port/remaster happens i will play it on Switch for sure. And welcome to a new Era btw:D

Edit: on topic bit: Metroid Prime 4 by next level devs is okay by me they made Luigi's Mansion 2 wich was a great succes. Altho if they ain't it makes sense that they are making Luigi's Mansion 3 for Switch since 2 /Dark Moon nearly sold 5m copies on 3DS.

My completely arbitrary prediction for 2018 Nintendo (in predicted released order):

Kirby Star Allies (HAL Lab)
Smash Bros for Switch (Sora / Namco ?)
Yoshi Switch (Good Feel)
Fire Emblem (Intelligent Systems)
Luigi's Mansion 3 (Next Level Games)
Mystery Retro IP (Retro Studios)
2D Super MARIO Bros. (EPD 4)
Metroid Prime 4 (New EPD Team)

I think the thing that would surprise me most from Retro would be a mass-market party game or something along those lines. I'm not sure it was their intention with their DKC games, but their difficulty definitely presented them as "core" games, much like Metroid's difficulty, play-style, and "brooding" atmosphere did. I'm guessing there will be continuity along these lines.

I could see them diverging from their propensity to deliver single-player experiences and making a multiplayer game. That is where the western groupthink is headed and I could see Retro sharing in that.

On another note, I'm quite curious if they are using another classic Nintendo IP or if they are actually developing their own IP.

Alexander Brandon, the composer of both Deus Ex and Unreal, is working with Retro. Could easily not be sci-fi, but still, looking at his body of work...
the problem with this is that he's not just a composer but does other audio stuff. so there's a chance he's not doing a thing with composing but mixing and all that

I wouldn't put too much into what a developer's previous work was. I mean one of Splatoon 2's developers worked on Phantom Pain. Before Tropical Freeze came out Retro hired people from places like Naughty Dog. Definitely take stuff like that with a grain of salt.

Hmm. Since she's an admin I'm not sure if it's kosher to still talk about her pre-NX reports, so definitely strike me down if I'm doing something wrong. Anyway, remember how Emily Rogers reported that Nintendo were developing Mario Maker prototypes for Switch, but also cautioned that just because they're in development doesn't mean they'll be released? Considering Mario Maker on 3DS gutted most of the online features despite otherwise being a respectable port, I've always had a personal theory NST were experimenting with porting it to the Switch, but then for whatever reason that was axed and they moved it to 3DS instead. So with that in mind, NST working on Mario Maker 2 would make a lot of sense.

No worries, NinjaCoachZ. As long as people are discussing topics that are relevant to the thread, then everything is perfectly fine.

Being an admin doesn't mean that I am above criticism. I realize that I made mistakes with some of my reporting (and rumor mongering) in the past, and I sincerely apologize for it. I don't want anyone to feel like they're walking on eggshells whenever my name is mentioned. And for what it's worth, I left journalism one year ago to pursue a career in game development.

Nice job on the thread, EAD Ninja.

I'm not sure if there's value in making an Eternal Darkness game. especially when they can leverage Next Level's expertise in something more lucrative and have a horror game from a cheaper studio like Koei Tecmo

Personally, I would like to see Next Level Games take another stab at Luigi's Mansion.

Luigi's Mansion is one of those IPs that would benefit tremendously from HD hardware. They could pull off some amazing lighting effects with an HD console.

They could also create some cool HD rumble effects when catching ghosts.

What about Pikmin 4?
June 2017: In an interview with Eurogamer Miyamoto said that, even though he can't share any new details about the game, Pikmin 4 is "progressing."

2018 Candidates for Switch First-Party

Nintendo EPD (Rhythm Tengoku team) ----------> New Project?
Nintendo EPD (Tomodachi/Miitomo team)--------> New Project?
Nintendo EPD (2D Mario team) --------------------> New Project?
Nintendo EPD (Animal Crossing team) -----------> New Project?
Nintendo EPD (Pikmin team) -----------------------> New Project?

Nintendo/Sora/Bandai-Namco/Others-------------> Smash DX
Nintendo/Retro Studios--------------------------------> New Project?
Nintendo/NST--------------------------------------------> New Project?
Nintendo/NLG--------------------------------------------> New Project?

Odds are that 50%of the above might surface. Meanwhile, HAL, Intelligent Systems and Good-Feel each have a game listed for Nintendo thus far.

Hey guys I just bought a switch tonight.
What are the chances of seeing some kind of Smash 4 port or even a new Smash game in the coming year do y'all think?

Wouldn't the 2D Zelda team be a candidate for 2018, or did they get absolved into BotW's development? Also do we know if Sakurai's new project is tied to the Smash 4 circle of devs or if it's separate?

I kind of think the 2D Zelda team is heading the rumored mobile Zelda game (the 5th mobile game).

Well animal crossing & pikmin switch are practically confirmed

Pikmin is a lot like Star Fox, where there have been prototypes that small Nintendo teams work on for years - and may or not ever see the light of day.

I recall that Hiromasa Shikata, Tri Force Heroes' director, was working on 1-2 Switch so it suggests the secondary Zelda team probably wouldn't be free for 2018. Even if there would be a new director, it would likely be someone who worked as a lead on Breath of the Wild.

it would have been likely if it released in 2017. maybe early 2018. but the longer they take the more likely it's probably gonna be a new game
it doesn't make sense to not to port it since it has content split between two versions , a large amount of DLC and it's one of the most successful wii u game next to mk8

I can see it being announce early next year

I really wish Nintendo would farm out more remasters to third-party devs (not just Zelda). And Wii U ports. I'd definitely buy Tropical Freeze and Xenoblade Chronicles X again on Switch.

For Nintendo's sake, I hope they don't wait too long to release a Smash Bros game.

Smash Bros will have a significant impact on Nintendo's amiibo business and their upcoming online subscription business.

I really want MP4 to be internal. I want there to be an EPD team invested in the franchise rather than a producer having to wrangle "outside" teams. I'm guessing it isn't internal though.

I'm legitimately surprised they couldn't pump out a Smash 4 port in time for the launch of their Online Subscription Service. I can't see many people paying for it just for Splatoon 2 and ARMs They'll need to rehink their VC approach and offer something substantial down that avenue if they want to entice people to subscribe from Day 1; free NES games aren't going to cut it.

The one silver lining is that there's a good possibility they're outright skipping a Smash 4 port and instead using those resources to work on a proper Smash 5.

If they didn't bother making Samus Returns internal, there's no way they're making an FPS internally. EPD is good at globally appealing games; Metroid Prime is not that. I don't expect 4 to do shit in Japan. Better off finding a western team to make a game that's primarily western appealing

I need more Luigi's Mansion in my life. Second one was great but the first is one of my favourite games ever. Hopefully Miyamoto's affinity for the series means a Switch game is in the works :P

I agree. I think Luigi's mansion is coming sooner rather than later considering how 2 sold.

I would add AC personally. And maybe Pikmin but I'm less confident on that.

I also think Odyssey will get a sequel in 2019. Since it doesn't have DLC like Zelda, the engine will be used in some way imo.

I suppose Camelot and/or Grezzo could swing something in 2018 depending on what it is.

speaking of Grezzo, I'm curious as to what they're up to. Ever Oasis struck me as an "in the meantime" game. I'd like to think they're working on something that's not Zelda now that BotW is out, but at the same time, I kinda think they're the new "handheld" Zelda team, while the old handheld team is making a mobile Zelda game

With it being their first wholly original game, I didn't get that sense at all.

i get that, but at the same time, I cant imagine why Nintendo wouldnt promote it more if it wasnt an inexpensive in between game. it's an inspired schedule filler, but Nintendo still treated it as such, which is why I think it was something to past the time until everyone's ready to start on their switch game

Ever Oasis and Metroid Samus Returns could get a Switch version for a redemption. 3DS's showing it's age probably hurted both's sales. A Switch version, given it's strong moment, could have been a better alternative instead. Another game they should give a second chance is DK: Tropical Freeze, a terrible mismanaged release for Wii U, among the ranks of many Nintendo fans as one of it's best titles ever.

From this list it looks like they could have the sort of year I think they should have (from second page):
I think a year with Fire Emblem; Kirby; Yoshi; Smash; something(s) among Retro, Pikmin, and Metroid; something, or preferably two things, among Animal Crossing, 2D Mario/Maker, and Pokemon would be the ideal sort of 2018 from Nintendo first party.

The wildcard would be a new IP with the potential to be a Splatoon or a Nintendogs.

That would be somewhere between 3 and 6 of the teams listed above producing something, with 4 for the option that has the "optimal" mixture of my hopes and guesses (i.e the option with one among Retro, Pikmin, and Metroid and two among Mario, AC, and Pokemon with Smash as the fourth item).

Do we have a current ETA on the paid online service atm?

I'm thinking something like Smash in the first half of the year (March through June, maybe May/June?), AC/Mario in August/September, AC/Mario/Pokemon in October/November would be really nice.

I think FE makes sense as a game early in the year or as a second holiday game. Maybe a late summer game. Same thing with Retro, Pikmin, and Metroid.

Since other people are making their lists, here's one I made a few weeks ago

February: Kirby
March: Yoshi
June: Pikmin
August: Fire Emblem Switch
October: Smash Bros for Switch
December: Animal Crossing

Most of these seem pretty likely enough based on what we know each team seems to be working on. I didn't list anything from March to June because I think we could get one or two of the new IPs Kimishima was referring to in that period. Either that, or a new Mario sports game. Personally I'm still pulling for an Amiibo based game for one of those "new IPs". Something like Kid Icarus in that spot would work, especially since Sakurai is supposedly working on a new project now.

The only real toss up for me is Pokemon. Metroid seems like a lock for 2019, but I can see Pokemon Company pushing out something by 2019.

In theory that would make sense, but Nintendo has been known to send stuff to die all the time. While it's reasonable to think that Grezzo, and other Nintendo teams that released games late in the 3DS cycle, have had small teams prototyping stuff for the Switch, they are not big enough to support 2 full teams working on different projects. They could have something out next year if it's a remake/remaster or a joint with another company ala Legend of Legacy, but otherwise I'm not inclined to think they will have anything.

On a side note, since we are on the subject of Grezzo, they are currently recruiting a programmer and designer with both listings looking for experience with Unreal Engine.

Nice to see EAD/Shikamaru Ninja back here. He always seems to have the best detailed breakdown of Nintendo projects and teams.

Monolith's current project should probably be appended to include this unknown title
wwgmonolithgame2-1016538.jpg

Given that we know Xenoblade 2's development started before Xenoblade X launched, it's pretty much certain now given that Xenoblade 2 is just over a month to release (so the game should probably be in Certification right now), that the majority of the development team has probably transitioned to the new project.

Of course given that we know pretty much nothing about this project, there's no way to even theorize when it could ever release. While Xenoblade 2 was able to be released in 2 years from the prior game, given that this game will likely be something completely new (and reusing the Xeno2 engine, as it was reused from XenoX, may not be an option to hasten development)

I have to say, that 2019 might be too ambitious.

I'd say it depends on how much different the project is compared to the past titles. We do know that it's seems to be fantasy action based on the concept art and the job openings that they have for the title since it seems they were really specific for it. I'd agree that 2019 might be an ambitious release and it will probably be revealed then but not release.
