I bought a $60 entry-level DeLonghi espresso maker on November 4th.
What's a respectable amount of time for me to wait until I upgrade to a $500+ machine? /s
Right now I'm grinding beans for espresso with a Kalita hand grinder which is producing a pretty good cup of coffee. I'm not sure if you'd call it espresso, though. I want to get further into this, but I understand that to get the requisite crema to constitute a "proper" espresso you need quite a rather pricy electric burr grinder. The cheapest reputable one that I can find in Japan is roughly $300, so I figure I'll forego the standalone grinder for a compartively priced semi- or super-automatic.
Literally the only thing stopping me is the shame in knowing that I've barely been on this current machine for a month.
Well, that and and the relatively poor selection for reasonably-priced espresso machines in this country. I'm a little surprised that, considering Japan is so enthusiastic about electronics and coffee, all of the machines I find available to order domestically are models that have been long since discontinued in the US or Western Europe. I would love a Breville Oracle, but Ebay is BY FAR my cheapest option for that even considering shipping and importing costs. I'm hesitant to go with a super-automatic because I like doing some of the things myself, but a
DeLonghi Magnifica (albeit a few years old model) isn't a bad proposition domstically and ordering it locally would uncomplicate the warranty situation.
Anyone with a super-automatic/one-button machine that has any regrets over not going with something a bit more hands-on?
