I have a question for everyone here. Ratios... SCAA and pretty much everyone states that the ideal ratio is 1:16 water to coffee.

I find that when I brew at this ratio on my drip, pour over, or even French press, the coffee is way too strong and bitter. In testing with different grind settings and amounts, my preferred is a 1:19 ratio.

Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone swear by 1:16?

I dunno about swear by it, but I go for roughly 32g with 520ml water in V60, so just over 1:16. I get nice cups out of it, but I do have more success with lower amounts, such as 17-18g coffee with 250-270ml of water. Need to brew about 2 cups each time though, so I do more 95% of the time.

Looking for a good auto machine don't kill me...

I'm not a huge coffee guy but my wife is, we have some old POS automatic machine that is starting to leak everywhere so I thought I would buy a nice one for xmas... but I have no idea what a good one even is.

I found this on amazon that seems legit but it jumped $20 in price as I was making this thread! Open to suggestions!

What are you brewing on?

I don't think she wants to mess with a french press or stovetop percolator or pour over. This thing is supposed to emulate a pour over in an automatic, has anyone used one?

I really don't get why people insist on spending obscene amounts of money on a stupid machine. To make excellent coffee you only need a grinder and some kind of jug, such as a French press.

Also seconding the request above for any recommendations on an automatic machine. I think I saw Bonavita mentioned earlier but found so many more on a google search and got confused.

It's for gift suggestions and the person in question loves coffee but has no interest/patience in pouring/pressing their own coffee (they really want an automatic timer so it's ready when they wake up), so stuff like aeropress/french press/chemex is out. They also have no interest in an espresso machine currently.

Look for something that heats the water up enough. Most have a hard time getting the water over 200F. Also, get a machine that uses a thermal carafe instead of a heating element on the bottom. Something like the Bonavita BV1900TS or the Oxo On would be good places to start

I'm all about cold brew now! I still enjoy a hot brewed cup occasionally, but this method changed me from a casual drinker at 39, to bordering on obsessed with coffee!

Got it pretty dialed in last night! We just finished moving into our new house and this was the last big purchase/early Christmas present. Well worth it. Coming from my normal Chemex manual setup, to a Jura superauto, to this is just amazing.

Damn, that is some good equipment. How is the Sette working out for you. I am using a Preciso but the notchy adjustment dial is starting to feel a little wonky.

Anyone here enjoy Death Wish coffee and/or their Valhalla Odinforce blend? They are both really good tasting dark roast blends with a nice caffeine boost.

Love the taste of coffee from my French Press but what an annoyance it is to clean. I use a $20 Mr. Coffee I bought years ago and it works just fine. Having good coffee is key and having proper water temp.

The cuisinart I posted is SCAA certified so it should get hot enough? Its also available in a insulated carafe which I think is what my wife likes about our current machine.

I would get that or one of the bonavita SCAA certified models. They can be had for relatively cheap.

I have a moccamaster but I had the bonavita and besides some of the parts feeling a bit cumbersome and maybe a bit cheap, it made some great coffee.

I have those methods at my disposal, but most mornings I just want to grind, put it in a filter, and let the machine do the rest. It also allows my wife to make a great cup without me having to over complicate it for her.

Yeah, too chilly for it now but ten months out of the year I drink nothing but cold brew.

While I don't "miss" hot coffee per se, it is nice to return to it during winter. I get a nice crema from my French press:

Thanks! The Sette has been awesome so far, very easy to dial in and the macro/micro adjustments are pretty straightforward. I wouldn't say it's too loud, but it's a decent amount of noise. Unbelievably fast grinder though. I'm used to a Rocky Rancilio and the Sette grinds circles around it. Very uniform from what I've inspected as well.

I'm the one who linked you to this thread in the one you made and feel sort of responsible for you coming here, so, first off:

Fucking come on, guys. When coffee fans/enthusiasts/whatever like us tend to be regarded as pretentious snobs who like to act condescending by those who aren't so into our beloved beverage, these are the first two replies to a completely reasonable and direct question from one of those people?

He stated that his wife doesn't want to mess with French press or pourover and that's going to include Aeropress as well. I love pour over as much as the next guy, as well as use an Aeropress many times during the week, but posts like these aren't helpful and make the rest of us sound like dicks to an audience that already isn't very receptive.

That's great! It's a very new machine (and I don't think available outside the US) so I wasn't sure if it was SCAA certified, but if that's the case then it should be really good. You would get the absolute best out of it if you ground the beans fresh just before using it, but if you want no effort in the morning then I can understand that.

Ha no worries. I can certainly appreciate good coffee, I'm just not into it enough to go through all the work. Maybe in the future, when I first moved in with my wife she was a drip foldgers kind of person. I got her a nice burr grinder and some good beans from work (one of our clients is a small indie roaster) they have come out and done pour over demos and even competed in brewing/roasting competitions.

Give me a break. People don't want to do that crap. What's so hard to understand?

No matter how much money you throw at it, you'll still end up with a water jug. Why complicate things? A French Press can be cleaned under a running tap, and you can put the grounds into your compost. If you don't want to grind beans, buy ready-ground coffee.

Should I dump some hot cocoa powder into this black coffee right now?
Absolutely, if you want to do it. I'm a fancy coffee nerd, but I support all forms of coffee addiction.

I complicate things because I like the process. I source the beans, roast them, grind them and brew them with a variety of methods. Coffee, to me, is more than just a cup of a beverage. I totally get the simple approach of an automatic drop machine with preground beans. It's just not for me.

Is anyone else doing Third Wave Wichteln this year?

https://thirdwavewichteln.com/

It's an organised worldwide coffee Secret Santa, with the rules being that it should be freshly roasted and single origin. I did it last year and sent a of bag of a local roaster's offerings to someone in China, and received a Kenyan (I think?) from St. Petersburg, Russia in return early January.

Obviously, depending on who's chosen as your recipient, shipping can be expensive and not everyone can afford it this time of year, but I found the experience interesting enough to give it another go.

Never heard of it but it sounds like fun. I personally wouldn't jump in just out of fear of paying exorbitant shipping fees.

I bought a $60 entry-level DeLonghi espresso maker on November 4th.

What's a respectable amount of time for me to wait until I upgrade to a $500+ machine? /s

Right now I'm grinding beans for espresso with a Kalita hand grinder which is producing a pretty good cup of coffee. I'm not sure if you'd call it espresso, though. I want to get further into this, but I understand that to get the requisite crema to constitute a "proper" espresso you need quite a rather pricy electric burr grinder. The cheapest reputable one that I can find in Japan is roughly $300, so I figure I'll forego the standalone grinder for a compartively priced semi- or super-automatic.

Literally the only thing stopping me is the shame in knowing that I've barely been on this current machine for a month.

Well, that and and the relatively poor selection for reasonably-priced espresso machines in this country. I'm a little surprised that, considering Japan is so enthusiastic about electronics and coffee, all of the machines I find available to order domestically are models that have been long since discontinued in the US or Western Europe. I would love a Breville Oracle, but Ebay is BY FAR my cheapest option for that even considering shipping and importing costs. I'm hesitant to go with a super-automatic because I like doing some of the things myself, but a DeLonghi Magnifica (albeit a few years old model) isn't a bad proposition domstically and ordering it locally would uncomplicate the warranty situation.

Anyone with a super-automatic/one-button machine that has any regrets over not going with something a bit more hands-on?

Not Sweden obviously, but I know Fuglen Coffee over in Oslo is highly regarded worldwide. They have a cafe in Tokyo too. I know we can order their beans online here, so I assume you can do the same from the Norwedgian headquarters but I have no I idea what their prices look like outside of yen.

ERA, should I splurge on an expensive espresso machine? I'm thinking of getting either the Breville Oracle Touch or the Breville Creatista (don't laugh, it's essentially the Oracle but with espresso pods).

I can easily afford either, but I'm not sure whether I want to give up the coffee shop lifestyle -- talking to baristas, enjoying a drink, etc.

(I also have two manual espresso machines that I never use anymore, because I got tired of making my own drinks with subpar machines.)

Get a Braville Big Thirsty.

Make sure to fill it with Rakeesh's Fine as Fuck Froths and Rotunda Hot Loads for that crema goodness.

LOL, a Braville what?! I had to look it up and it doesn't exist :P

I only buy my coffee goods in the Black Market. The Braville only pulls pints of expresso, hence the "Big Thirsty".

As a Wealthy Industrialist I have access to such fine product. I am truly sorry for your predicament.

You may have to settle for this:

I and the Weathy Bicyclists are so, so sorry.

Good day.

I can fix anything inside a Breville, barring the touchscreen and microcontroller in the Oracle.

Well, maybe I can, depending if it already comes pre-programmed.

Breville Barista Express then? I was thinking of getting the Barista Touch since it also froths for me... but I might as well go for the Creatista at that point.

Been drinking for a month and I have gotten to that point where if I don't drink, theres that pain in the head going on. A little fuzzy, a little constricted, hard to describe the feeling yknow. Its not real pain, but it definitely doesn't feel good yknow?

Do you guys just drink more, fight through it, or do you guys take time off from coffee or any caffeine stimulant. Or are you a rare unicorn that doesnt get caffeine withdrawals! Just wondering how Coffee-era tackles this unfortunate side effect of the black gold!

It was shocking tbh, because I didn't realize not even drinking for one day would lead to this amount of headaches, and here I am pouring myself another cup. Cheers! :D

Last time I tested it I have to go a whole day without coffee before I get a headache (but I also get headaches from other triggers).

A cup of coffee rarely has any noticeable stimulation for me— I make and drink coffee in the morning for the ritual and the flavour (and avoiding the headache). Clearly it's an addiction but it's not a problem one so I'm not concerned.

Have had that happen to me once after a few days of no caffeine. The hotel I was at for work had such terrible coffee the first day I was there I just didn't have anything for 4 days.

I usually just have one cup in the morning and then occasionally another maybe in the early afternoon. Just recently I cut down even further since my wife was pregnant and I was not making coffee as often. Did not get any bad effects, but a friend of mine can not go half a day without turning into a complete mess. He pretty much just drinks coffee and beer.

Update: she loves the Cuisinart! Produces a really decent cup of coffee. I think the weak link now is my grinder (cheap mr coffee burr grinder) I was thinking of replacing the grinding disks but I don't see anywhere that sells them so now I'm looking for a better grinder.

We have a Breville smart grinder pro at work, it seems really nice but maybe overkill. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground between $25 junk and "entry level" good ones that are $200.
