I recently acquired XX on the 3DS. Been working on upgrading my stuff for G-Rank'ing.

But as far as MHW goes, I still need a system or upgrade my PC for it. I REALLY want to play it, but in my current state, I can't do much but keep playing the 3DS games.

Man I would totally have been playing XX towards the lead up to world if it was available in English

Why couldn't Capcom just spend the money and give us our bridge game? I need the MHW demo to satisfy my hunter cravings man

Am I the only one worried that MHW will be full of microtransactions and that the armor system will be less deep than the previous ones? A lot of the longevity of the games, at least for me, is tied up in the gathering of mixed sets.

I havent seen any indication in any of the previews that they plan on messing with the core game with microtransactions

It looks like thats going to remain the domain of cosmetics like the preorder samurai costume

Yeah, you are probably right.
On the other hand, to a whole lot of players, cosmetics is core to the experience.

I hope that is not the case. It would suck.
Any long time player will except a batch of free DLC after launch, like with the other games. But a lot of people keep playing the game for months, giving them ample time to add MTs gradually.
I would be fine with payed DLC though, like large batches of quests or G rank or something like that.

Aren't event quest going to be on rotation like they were on Tri? I wouldn't mind G-rank as a DLC but that be leaving money on the table for a possible expansion with new monsters.

If they ever do put out a demo, It's probably gonna be a Patapon 2 situation for me, where I end up spending waaaaaaaay too much time with it.

I haven't heard anything about event quests, but I guess they will probably be on rotation.
As for expansions, I hope they stick to one or a few large expansions, rather than a bunch of small ones.

Ah that stinks.

I would recommend making a full Tetsucabra set (Red Frog). It will help you take less damage and have more hit points.

As for weapons you can continuously level up the standard Iron Weapons. I would avoid making multiple weapon types early on as you have to commit a lot of time and effort and you may never end up using them.

When fighting the monster feel free to put your weapon away and simply focus on running around the monster and getting a feel for how it moves, what it's animations are like and what sort of openings you might be able to get. It's also very important to understand how you want to manipulate the camera while fighting it and every monster has a different 'feel' to how you move around it. Mastering the basic elements of the monster will make it a lot easier; treat the game more like a 3D fighting game like Tekken or Virtual Fighter and less like a Beat-Em-Up, you'll have those monsters under your thumb in no time!
But in the interim, how should I go about upgrading/forging armor? Just try to craft the strongest and most expensive ones available?

I wrote an effortpost for a MH group I'm in (credit to Deadeyedave for writing the post I based this off) it assumes some rudimentary knowledge and some of the info is more pertinent to Generations/X

are you playing 4u or gen? early game armor set Id focus more on getting attack up or defense up depending on your playstyle. after that just upgrade the set when you get the armor spheres.

gotcha, what's the weapon that you're currently using? also what monsters have you fought? are you still using the beginner set?
I tried the bow first but aiming with the C-stick sucks. I've been using the Switch Axe. I've just bought an Alloy Mail? Other than that, beginner stuff. I've just done the Koncha quest.

try farming Tetsucabra(big frog with tusks) and make his armor set. you'll only have defence up(S) and torso up for active skills with a bunch of other points for skills that aren't active. You can get to high rank with that set if you keep upgrading its defenses. For switch axes try and focus on getting switch axes with power phials.

for Skills to be considered active you need to reach their threshold level. so for health you'll need to get to +20 points in health to activate the skill. Kiranico is good database for a bunch of help with weapons and armor.

Xaoc11 I think that frog hasn't shown up on my map yet. So I should just hold on to the Beginner Set until I can farm that armor?

yes, focus on learning monster movements and upgrade your weapons. while defense is important its more important to learn how to dodge and avoid being hit in the long run. In the endgame content there are many attacks that can one-shot you even with max defense.

Xaoc11 thanks! I guess I'll try to focus on evading, though it is hard with my weapon of choice. By the way, what can I do with sleeping bosses? I read greater rewards but I wasn't prompted to do anything.

You can evade with any weapon! Though I have not checked if you can increase the distance or increase the iframes in 4U. I assume the skills are still there. I been doing damage and damage on enrage.

I meant the weapon I picked makes me sluggish, I assume you can roll and dodge easier with the lighter weapons?

The switch axe is actually a pretty mobile weapon because it has the faster sidesteps rather than side rolls, and sword mode has pretty quick attacks that you can cancel with dodges quickly. The walk speed of weapons is not that relevant really, you want to get used to sheathing your weapon when monsters get far away from you in this game. That's one thing that put me off using the lance when I first started playing--its walk speed is extremely slow and I hadn't realized that sheathing my weapon so I could sprint back into action was something the game expected me to do.

Capturing monsters gives you somewhat different odds for certain parts than killing them and carving them. I want to say that claws and fangs are more common if you carve whereas sacs are more common with capturing. For the most part, I think you have better odds of getting a monster's rarest parts by killing it. Personally, I just kill everything unless the quest requires I capture it or if I want to play it safe and cut the hunt a bit short rather than risk dying at the very end.

FYI, you have a few frames of invincibility at the very start of your dodges, but you need really good timing to dodge through things. If you're around a large monster, sprint away or to the side of it and press B to do a dive, often called a superman. You're invincible from when you hit the button to a few frames after you hit the ground. Very good to know.

Rather than using invincibility frames, "dodging" is often more about putting yourself in a position to not get hit before the monster even starts to do its attack. Tetsucabra, for example, will usually do his side slam if you're on one of his sides. That attack has a lot of range and is pretty damaging so you've got to learn to anticipate it and, if you're attacking him from his side, get in a position closer to his head or tail where you can very quickly sidestep be out of range of that side slam attack as soon as you see him rear back to use it. When he walks up to you all casual-like, usually he'll swipe you with his claw when he reaches you. The extreme example of this is probably monsters like Yian Garuga or Rathian, who can go from standing still to trampling you in a full speed run in almost no startup frames. In that case you've just got to not be directly in front of them at close range when they turn toward you and are about to attack, lest they decide to bowl you over.

PKrockin thanks for the tips! I'll try to practice the sidestep and sheathing my weapon, I am still not comfortable with the control scheme. I am not sure if I'll be able to pull off relying on i-frames since even though that's a part of the Souls series, I still wasn't able to figure that out.

Hey everyone! First time taking a look in here, really like and play a lot of MH. Mostly playing XX these days, main weapon of choice over the series is HBG.

Hi MH community!

I'm mainly playing Stories at the moment but have a real urge to go back to MHG for a bit. Hopefully we'll see XX eventually.

As a Capcom guy, I'll be dabbling on all three platforms. ;-)

I've only started playing the series from 4U, but it's been quite a revelation in terms of overall depth of the gameplay. I play with my 12 y/o son on and off over weekends, and it's been quite fun.

Finger cramp is real, so I ended up getting one of these rubberized grips. Such a life saver.

I might actually get one of those grips for playing MH4U... I've been getting cramped hands lately.

I can not recommend it enough. Go for it. Make sure to get Version 2 — the one I linked above.

Difference between Version 1 is the finger rest position for your index (or middle) finger. Version 2 has a much better and natural placement. Feels so gud in hands.

But in the interim, how should I go about upgrading/forging armor? Just try to craft the strongest and most expensive ones available?

The game has 3 ranks
Low Rank > High Rank > G Rank

Each rank has the same armour but with higher stats. You don't need to worry about improving your armour and weapons until you are dealing with the rank above.

You can upgrade your existing armour with Armour Spheres which is a good idea, but once you go from Low > High you want to make another set. For example with the red frog armour set

Tetsucabra (Low Rank) 3 Star Caravan /// 1 Star Guild Quest
Tetsucabra S (High Rank) 6 Star Caravan /// 4 Star Guild Quest
Tetsucabra X (G Rank) 8 Star Guild Quest

So you may need to make the set 3 times, one for each rank that you're in.
(I just wore my starting gear until G rank, because I've already got 3,000+ hours of experience with the series)

So generally, if you hit a wall where you think "Man, I cannot seem to progress past this point" then go back and enhance your existing gear: Just remember that gear alone will not carry you through, your skill and ability is what will break down those walls.

Also if it hasn't already been mentioned: http://kiranico.com/en/mh4u
It's great for doing any bookkeeping and figuring out where to get items.

I really only slowed on playing MH when it hit the 3DS. Where I live it was too expensive to get a NA 3DS. So finally last couple year I was able to pick one up in the states and picked up 4U on sale. I played the PS2 one on friends, but for owning it was Frontier on the PSP.

Jader7777 thanks, I'll take note of that! I actually bought a few pieces that I could make but I haven't been able to make a complete armor set yet.

Also, yep, kiranico has been recommended by a lot of people here, though I've been using the MH4U Database Android app for now. The only thing that sucks about the app is that there are no screenshots of monsters, just their icons.

Hi everyone, Im new to the community but I've been a fan of monhun since I was introduced to it on the PSP with Monster Hunter Freedom. I enjoyed 4U, Generations, and Stories (except for the cat). My psn is the same as my username hit me up with a friend request.

It's difficult to split the hairs that divide the games. They're all fairly similar and the difference between them is that they do or do not have a G rank mode.

I did like the added complexity of wyvern stones from 4U though, they were removed in Generations.

My assumption is no, they'll still be there. Points and skills are a bit different but I see no reason you still couldn't mix things depending on what you're looking for.

That and the fact that they seem to be including a transmog-like system tells me mixed sets will still be a thing. They've never really highlighted mixed sets in any of the marketing though right? Doesn't look as nice I suppose.

I really like the addition of styles and arts Gen/XX had. It gave me a whole lot more to master right when I was feeling like I had pretty much learned all the weapons at the end of 4U. It seems like a slight majority like 4U better because they either didn't like styles, thought Adept made things too easy, or preferred the end game farming of Apex Guild Quests. 4U having a semi-interesting story with nice in-game cutscenes and setpieces and all that was pretty cool too. I still like XX better, I think, because all 6 hammer styles are fun and that's my favorite weapon. If you want to cheese 4U, you can do so with an evasion+3 set pretty easily in G-rank.

Glad to see Xbox One 75% to a full party. I'm rooting for you guys!

Doesn't the XB1 have cross-play with PC? It's just Sony acting like a child, isn't it?
