That looks really great! I may have to look into the road plates, they really complement the look and make it feel more like a village.

Sounds good, shame to see them not expanding their licenses though. I do look forward to the 68 Mustang the most. I wonder what's in the Ultimate Garage...

Just to offer a slightly different opinion, I actually really like Brick Bank. I'd rank it as my second favourite Modular (after Assembly Square).

I really like brick bank as well. I'm not a big fan of the washing machine side, but the bank side looks great.
I have grand emporium onwards, and refuse to pay over the odds for older sets. Still on the fence about the diner, but will probably get it on double VIP

Done with the first floor now, and the laundry side is my favorite. This particular build is just amazing.

UGH. I guess I'm alone in having no interest whatsoever in brickheadz. The 2015 seasonal vignettes were my favorite. Looks like I'm skipping the seasonal sets for the first time in years.

I'm gonna stop checking /r/legodeal. I've gotten $200 worth of stuff in the past 2 months cause I keep finding really good deals on stuff I wanted. Ironically it made me spend more than i initially planned. Lol.

Buy or rent a bigger place. :)
Money and space are the two biggest limiting factors. Running out of either limits one's LEGO buying habits.

If those are unbuilt sets you would like to build, what you did is the most one can do to save space.

Sets I take apart go into my brick collective. "Resistance if futile"

I have loose sorted bricks in plastic drawers and containers.
and I have new bricks that I have a lot of that I haven't used which get "compacted" as much as possible without making it too hard to "uncompact". Easier if I show you...

Nice! thanks! I am not totally out of space but I am trying to be much more minimal these days.
Its crazy how fast the boxes pile up especially when you are busy working , and just don't have time to really deal with them.

Thanks for posting, I really love Speed Champions. I wish they fit in with the city stuff better but I don't care.
In my city everyone will be in HUGE cars lol.

The Mercedes Benz Arocs is probably by far the best Technic set as far as price to quality goes. The Porsche is great but significantly more expensive, the Bucket-Wheel Excavator is massive but a bit weird. The Arocs looks amazing when it's done, is huge, and is (relatively) inexpensive as far as top-tier sets go.

There's some good Technic sets on the horizon though.

Happy to see this. I grabbed the Arcos when it was 40% off or so around Black Friday.
I was pretty shocked by how big the box for it is.
I do still want the Porsche but saving it for a reward when I accomplish something or I will grab it when it closer to retirement.

Same here. I have been watching various forums, and I should stop lol.
The first year of Lego is a real test of the wallet that is for sure.
I do think I got most of the sets I really wanted and can slow down a bit into next year.

I hope for something better and that it changes each day. Even on the Brick Friday there was 1 non-exclusive deal (which means with some patience you can get it cheaper in retail...) and other were from the exclusives line.

Ordered the Destiny Bounty before double VIP ended. I've been pretty good about cutting back my purchases to just Star Wars and modular/creator expert line, but the boat looks to good to pass up.

I saw a story on the BBC news website about a father in Germany campaigning against certain custom WWII Lego mini-figs sold on Amazon marketplace. I put the picture in spoiler tags to not mess up the Christmas theme.

_99173874_mediaitem99173872.jpg

I can see the guy's point, although the article mentions that the seller also sells custom Allied soldiers. I'm not sure who buys these, but I would guess adults who make WWII-themed MOCs rather than kids. I can't really imagine they are for Christmas presents as the guy is worried about.

Here is the link to the article: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-42325455

Seems to be a subset of Lego fans that focus on war theme dioramas (be they WW2, Civil War, etc). Ended up following some of them on Flickr, which then resulted in me getting into a comment argument with an alt-right Lego builder. Shit gets everywhere, but I digress.

Sorry I don't post in here often. The notifications in the top corner never flag this thread and I always forget to look at Watched Threads.
But looking over my list of 2017 sets and trying to get a top list together. I know this year was my last hurrah, as I will not be getting much next year due to money.

Top 10 Sets of 2017

This is only my personal top 10, and based solely on sets that I own that released in 2017. Some sets I was extremely high on when I first got them, but cooled on them as the year went on. Others had my admiration for them grow as the year went on as I appreciated more of what the set delivered. Price, build, and warm and fuzzy feelings do play a role in how I determined some of this.

So, without further ado. And to test ERA's cool spoiler functions:

10) Cheap thrills for all!
cwYm90ol.jpg

Released early in the year, this set delivered a lot of fun for under $20. You get three awesome builds (4 with online bonus instructions!), some cool build techniques, loads of useful parts, and tons of personality in each build. This is one of the easiest recommendations for anyone that is really into LEGO as well as those just coming back. The price does play a big role in how highly I recommend it.

9) You spin me 'round...
1uaaMOTl.jpg

Mike Psiaki strikes again! Filled with the same odd angles wedged into places to create curves or off angles as his other awesome sets (Ferrari, Beetle, Saturn V), this set is filled with lots of cool twists and turns as it comes together.
Yes, it is very repetitive. A set like this is repetitive in nature to get a uniform look on all sides, but that repetition yields great looking results. And the sheer creativity in how it all clicks in and with an incredibly stable main shaft to hold it all together elevates it.
And yes, I might be a bit biased towards it at the end of the year since dragging this into class helped me get a perfect score on my final motor project.

8) Who doesn't love zombies?
Nx7HPSul.jpg

Especially zombie sharks!
Many seemed to lament the fact that this wasn't a proper ship build, but the odd nature of it is what I absolutely loved. Unlike almost everything else as you build it, and so awesome to look at when complete. My only real complaint is it is fragile as hell when you try and move it, but the trick is figuring out where to grab it to pick it up.
The fragility does make me reconsider placing it so high for the year, but it was such fun to build and look at when completed that it had to make the list. Also, ZOMBIE SHARKS!

7) One small step for man...
0mmomt1l.jpg

I hemmed and hawed about just how high to place this for the year. There is so much to love in this set. Besides being a NASA set (which makes it awesome by default), it is also a large and amazing looking model when completed. The build is repetitive but wholly unique. The techniques to pull off the cylindrical shape are mind boggling and I cant begin to imagine how to plan something like this out (blessed be Psiaki!). Hell, even the piece count on the set is a reference to the historic craft that is being built.
But, as amazing as the set is, there are others that gave me more joy throughout the build and surprised me more.

6) Green with envy.
zOlEyH1l.jpg

Shocking news! A Ninjago dragon is an amazing set! And this might be the best one yet. Loaded with great details and unique piece use (banana!), the set is both a great build and a wonderful playset as well. Even if you know nothing about Ninjago lore (like me), it is still a great set to build. And I am a sucker for dragons anyways.

5) Themes clash in a spectacular set.
vsB6OGzl.jpg

Is it a modular? Kinda.
Is it a strange frankenstein monster of styles and build techniques? Absolutely, and bless it for that.
I can't think of a set more densely packed with odd details and off the wall building techniques than this. It is large and a bit unwieldy when done, and actually a bit ugly. But that is what gives it character. Each tier of the city has something awesome to deliver, both in cool details as well as cool build techniques. Truly a Frankenstein's monster of parts of other themes and ideas, but somehow it works.

4) Living the brick life a quarter mile at a time.
0i0yHnKl.jpg

I did not expect to love this set as much as I did. I just saw a cool car and some fun pieces like many Creator sets, but I wasn't ready for the almost childlike glee I had when I was building it and some of the play features revealed themselves. Really, the less you know the better. The discovery is part of the fun of the build on this thing. While the outward appearance and build are not quite as detailed as past Creator Expert vehicles (Beetle is GOAT), this is on the shelf with those on display in my home. It fits in so well, and is relatively cheap to boot.
This was probably the hardest one for me to rank for the year because of how much fun I had building it.

3) Ten years gone.
cS5KkyPl.jpg

The Modular series turned 10 in 2017, and LEGO celebrated in style by releasing the largest set in the line yet. As expected from the series, it delivers tons of detail, awesome and inventive build techniques, and lots of new and useful pieces for MOCs. It says something to the strength of this line when Palace Cinema is the weak link (of those that I have). This also apparently marks the final set in the Modular line with classic mini figure faces, as the new Downtown Diner will feature more unique expressions. This set was both a wonderful celebration of the series and a nice closing chapter on the first era of them. I can't wait to see where they go now.

2) In a galaxy far, far away...
1RBHhGXl.jpg

The Star Wars buildable figures have been around for some time. The results are hit or miss, with armored characters like Stormtroopers being hits. This set is no exception, and also has the distinction of being the first vehicle for a buildable figure (that I am aware of). The build is unlike almost everything else Star Wars by being very Technic focused. The end results are just spectacular. This was gunning for #1 for me, but it ran into a tree when it looked back.

1) So I am a sucker for this style.
ubBDGHXl.jpg

And that style is classical Japanese. Most here know my undying love for Temple of Airjitzu, with its classical Japanese architecture and appearance, combined with its wonderful build.
Now take that, give a phenomenal price to piece ratio, and a ton of ninjas, and you have something truly great.
A compact, dense boat build, complete with detailed lower decks and captain's quarters. A highly detailed exterior with some different build techniques and unique piece use. And who doesn't love ninjas?
This set was a joy from beginning to end, and is an incredibly striking model when on display as well. The fact that it comes in at just under $.07 a piece makes the deal even sweeter. And you can even find it discounted easily.

But, Phoney Bone, what about THAT set?
8O4uGAIl.jpg

The largest and most expensive LEGO set ever created. A grand reimagining of one of the most legendary UCS sets ever. How could it not make my top 10?
I honestly cannot look at it objectively. It was a white whale ever since I got back into the habit. It was also the source of a lot of stress and an epic meltdown on my part when LEGO screwed up my order for it, and that colored my perception of it.
Even now, over 3 months after launch, it is still near impossible to get. It wouldn't feel right ranking something so difficult to find, even if I enjoyed the build immensely (and stressed during many parts of it) and have it proudly displayed at home.
Should you get it? Only if you have the means. It will no longer be "The one that got away" for me. It is special to me for that reason alone.

Honorable mentions.
  • LEGO Batman Movie: The Scuttler
  • Old Fishing Store
  • Star Wars UCS Snowspeeder

I'm glad I have the previous version of Mos Cantina. Throw in a Bith musician at least!

LEGO Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina (75205) by Allen Tran, on Flickr

"You know what we haven't made in a while? A Mos Eisley Cantina. But this time, lets include the bartender and some strange droid thing people will have to google to be reminded it exists" - said no Lego designer ever.

I completely understand why sets get remade, I just wish it wasn't the same sets. When will this set get some love? Update the figures, redesign the speeders with updated designs, throw in a Captain Typho or something, and baby you got a stew going.

I mean I remember that droid in the background as ANH is my favorite movie. Definitely will get this so I can make my Cantina better, still have two of the older sets (Target screwed up an online order and I got one for free).

Does seem cheap to do almost half of the set but seems like it could connect nicely.

It's not a droid it's a drop pod, or some such.

Really weird set, and a bitter disappointment considering the one thing I'd like most out of Star Wars minifigures is more Cantina aliens. I mean, they have Duros heads all ready that they could've just swapped in.

Actually, scrap that. My most wanted figure is Zuckuss. Why is he always left out?!

Alright, heres my top 5 guys!

#1: Saturn V.

33757023273_44223cf8f8_z.jpg

Perfection. The build is ingenious, the result is gorgeous, the size is huge, the value is fantastic, if you have even a remote interest in space this is a must buy. Its the set of the year. Only problem is that its still selling out because everyone wants it.

#2: Dragon Forge.

LEGO-Ninjago-Dragons-Forge-2.jpg

qSnYDqq.jpg
qSnYDqq.jpg

Probably not many peoples #2 set, but this is really on my list because of the forge itself. The design is amazing, its got a unique architectural vision and a great level of detail. If it wasnt for the open roof I would say its on the same standard of quality as modular buildings. Even the interior is highly detailed. Its larger than what it looks in the pictures too, its almost a baseplate wide when closed up. Only thing preventing this from being my set of the year is that the dragon is pretty average. The twisting colors idea is nice, but not enough in my opinion.

#3: Quake Mech.

I didnt know a mech could be cute but badass at the same time, but this is. And its also huge. A great value for the money at 1200 pieces. The design is very ambitious with its one wheeled setup, but it also prevents from the awkward "no knees" problem larger lego mechs have. The overall vision of this thing is great, and thats why its #3.
lego-quake-mech-set-70632-4.jpg

#4. Green Ninja Mech Dragon.

Probably my favorite dragon ever. The color scheme is unique, the robotics idea is implemented very well with the unfolding jet engines (who needs wings?). The head build is surprisingly creative. I love the way the eyes are attached.

70612_green_ninja_mech_dragon_reveal_05.jpg

#5: BB8.

This set is mainly on my list because of the functions. The design visually is decent but not super special. Its just bb8 in lego. Very cute. But the functions are great. The way the 'thumbs up' torch retracts is very clever. And the head rotating is super natural, due to its bobbling motion. Adds so much life to the build. Its just really fun to fidget around with.

zBQ4X0D.jpg

THEME OF THE YEAR:

logo--ninjago

Never thought I'd say this. Its been an amazing year for ninjago sets, particularly the movie. I didnt even get the flagship ones (destiny's bounty and ninjago city) because I've been so busy with all the other sets. Even so Im extremely satisfied with the theme this year. Ideas has been good as well, but it just doesnt have the sheer quantity of goodness ninjago has had this year.

Was the Scuttler a 2017 set? There are a few sets I'd probably put on my list without owning them like Ninjago City and the Carousel but it's better to stick with sets you own. About half of people's list are going to be similar I can tell now.

It comes with great figs, it's definitely one of the best TLBM sets. It's unique looking and had a fun build. I like building sets with legs, maybe I'm a closet anthromorph lover.

Wow, looking back on 2017 I really didn't get many sets.

Saturn V was my favorite by far (amazing build, amazing look, and great price), followed by BB-8 (I love BB-8, and the features and size if the set are just perfect for me).
Other than those two I think the only things I got were a few Brickhedz (beauty and the beast being my overall favorites probably) and the Batman Clayface set.
Minifig of the year... Probably the TLBM Robin dressed in the old Batman TV series outfit and includes the shark repellant spray, mainly just for nostalgia.

"You know what we haven't made in a while? A Mos Eisley Cantina. But this time, lets include the bartender and some strange droid thing people will have to google to be reminded it exists" - said no Lego designer ever.
I'm OK with all the Mos Eisley and Millenium Falcon re-releases as long as someday they re-release the UCS R2-D2. Definitely the set I regret the most not buying when it was available.

I just want to give a shout out to PhoncipleBone for shipping me Temple of Airjitzu. We had an agreement at the old place, and I told him I had to delay my part of the deal until early next year due to unforeseen financial circumstances. Thanks again! It's part of my backlog along with Ninjago City and Temple of the Ultimate Ultimate weapon!

Barnes and Noble stores have tons of sets for 30% off right now, like LEGO Batman Movie sets, Star Wars, etc. Starting tomorrow through the weekend, members will get 20% off, so that is potentially close to 50% off a lot of sets, including some recent stuff.

Back when the deal was first rumoured to be underway, it was the very first thing I thought about. And every time there was an update, too!

Throw in Silver Surfer and H.E.R.B.I.E into your set idea, and baby you got a stew going!

X-Men sets are an exciting prospect as well. Whereas it's pretty much assured that when we get a wave with a Fantastic Four set, we're going to get all four members in the same set/wave. However, with the X-Men it's far less clear cut who we'll get. I've got my fingers crossed for Professor X to be part of their next set!

Oh absolutely, X-men has been a criminally underutilized treasure trove of sets and figs. I'm kinda hoping they cancel the current Dark Phoenix Movie and retooling it with the now open prospects. Still the idea of a line of proper Dark Phoenix sets alone is mouth watering. Hopefully we can at least get Colossus and Nightcrawler figs.

My problem with X-Men (and superhero LEGO in general) is that the main draw is usually the figures, not the sets.

So you get an awesome set of minifigs like Wolverine, Magneto, and Deadpool, but then you get a mediocre helicopter build.
I'd say the only sets I like are the GOTG Milano (still need to get the newer one) and the Helicarrier (which I'd love to get, but it's just too pricey).

The Blackbird was actually a good set too. But yea I totally agree, they are more playsets which makes sense. Unfortunately for the comic and superhero lines none of them have a catalog of iconic vehicles to make sets out of like Star Wars. I think maybe they need to rethink their approach to the suphero lines and more $20 -30 sets and then $100 and up sets based on iconic settings or buildings packed with figs. Like Bridge Battle, that's a good recent example.

Also give us battle packs of Hydra agents, SHIELD agents and AIM soldiers in funky suits.

We need a Fortress of Solitude, Birds of Prey Clocktower and Hall of Justice/Watchtower.

I also really want a mini modular where you can buy sets with central power batteries for each of the Corps(with 3 minifigs for each) that can be combined into one big war set. Gimme a red one with Atrocitus, Bleez and Dex-Starr, a Green one with Ganthet, Jessica Cruz and Kilowog, a Black one with Black Hand and a giantfig of Nekron etc. Gimme Mogo and Ranx.
