Mass Effect 3's ending... and then again when I finished the Citadel DLC. I know the ending has a bad rep, but it still made me emotional realizing it was over.

A more recent example would be... Luna's end in Virtue's Last Reward (I played it for the first time this year). I don't think I've cried so hard playing video games before. It was so heartbreaking and Laura Bailey's performance was excellent. I miss that game...

Gone Home hit me like a bus. Everything about that story touched me even though I could in no way relate to any of the characters.

The Last Guardian and the opening of Ori and the Blind forest are the only times a game has evoked tears from me. Though other games - The Last of Us, Ico, SOTC, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Gone Home, etc gave dem feels as well.

I wanted to play that game so much but holy shit did it run bad on base PS4. I just couldn't do it.

I bought a PS4 Pro almost exclusively to play that game w/ a smooth framerate and it was worth it IMO.

That easily goes to one the most heartfelt and emotional endings I've seen in gaming.
Silent Hill 2
There are several endings but this one is my favorite. That final letter man... it's difficult to hear every time.

Probably really silly but when I was little my dad and I played Mario Kart all the time on the SNES. He passed away when I was 5 and a lot of my best memories with him are spending Saturday mornings playing Mario Kart. To this day I get a little emotional when I see footage of the SNES game.

i still cant believe this, what kind of game is that?

They are all reaction youtubers, maybe thay are all faking it?

It's a narrative game, it's right in my OP.... i myself can't stop having some tears when replaying it... No they're not faking it!

i mean read everyone here. not everybody react the same, some cry to everything, some never cry, as for me i very rarely cry in front of any media, but it can happens

To The Moon
The Walking Dead Season 1 ending
MGS4 (The hallway crawl, the fight, "Snake had a hard life", the initial cemetery scene... IE: The ending before that whole nonsense with Zero and Big Boss showing up which took a lot away from the ending's impact.)
Undertale (true pacifist)
That Dragon, Cancer
Life is Strange ending (Had a real good friend that was very similar to Chloe while growing up, but we had a falling out. The "bay over bae" ending hit hard.)
Final Fantasy X
Brothers, A Tale of Two Sons
What Remains of Edith Finch offered up some big gut punches throughout the entire story but that ending really kind of blindsided me.
Mass Effect 3's ending, but moreso when I played the game recently. I had played Mass Effect 1 through 3 in the weeks leading up to Mass Effect: Andromeda. So the connection to the characters was real strong in my mind.

The walking Dead Season 1

Beautiful writing and characterization helped create the definitive emotional climax in video game history.

The Last Guardian almost got me there, as well.

Definitely Xenogears for me too. I can't listen to the ending theme without tearing up. It's not so much out of sadness, more about the magnitude and completion of such an epic story.

Terranigma's gotta be the most recent for me (replayed it a couple months back). The first town theme still gets to me a bit...
One of the most influential and best-loved games of mine. The soundtrack is incredible. The ending theme always makes me cry, for similar reasons to the Xenogears ending.

Hamlet in Illusion of Gaia. RIP, piggy.
Heh. I didn't cry to that, but it's always been a poignant memory from that game. I love IoG. It's got a totally unique atmosphere to any other game.

I can't remember... but the ending and the epilogue of The Last Guardian was the greatest emotional rollercoaster I had in years. Accentuated by the game design based on climbing, falling, climbing, falling. When you look at it entirely its extremely well made.

Many cutscene of Yakuza 0 impressed me a lot too. And I don't understand a single word of japanese. Classical directing, no handshaking or flying camera, no epileptic cut, a pacing between dialogs that slowly fill an explosive tension and a constantly retained violence : the sequence in the tattoo shop is incredible for exemple.

Amen. Mass Effect was (I think) the first strong sci-fi shooter I ever played as a kid and definitely the first game I ever finished with such a focus on character development/interactions. Then ME2 came out and blew me away (I'm never gonna forget how strong that intro was the first time I saw it). I thought it couldn't get any better until ME3 came out with honestly my favorite multiplayer ever. It's flawed as hell but the way its made I swear to God someone at bioware tailor made it to hit all my buttons. There are too many moments in mass effect to count where I cried. Think I've mentioned in another thread I still haven't touched Citadel cuz I know it'll hit me like a truck.

Always gotta shoutout 356/2 days though. KH nails giving characters evocative themes

Top tier games achieved with TearEngine :

3: Assassin's Creed III:
Achille's funeral.
I know AC3 is probably one of the most hated game in the franchise (it's actually one of my favorite), but I really felt a ton of things about Achille, especially about Conor who's a big ungrateful asshole with him for a long moment in the game. Bringing back the portrait of Achille and his wife and son who died was powerful, but digging the grave was even more powerful.

2: Lost Odyssey:
Lirum's funeral.
If you played Final Fantasy VII and saw the end of first CD, you might hold on your tissues because Hironobu Sakaguchi did it again, and it is, in my opinion, much more powerful. Because here, you actually play the funeral, you have to prepare the ceremony and send the corpse into the sea. Add Nobuo Uematsu's soundtrack and there you go...

1: Terranigma:
Credits / Ending.
Terranigma is my all time favorite, and the ending always make me cry, because of what happens at the end. With the death of Dark Gaia, Ark and the people of Crysta will cease to exist. The hero can speak to the citizens before the end and especially to Elle (Celina in the French version). Then, you go to bed and the main character make a final dream before he vanishes. And then... sorry, there's something in my eyes...
I'm sad the game was never released in the USA but please, give it a chance with emulation.

Blackwood crossing

A nice indie game with a twist that isn't much of a twist.

Yet I was literally sobbing at the end. The final scene is just so hard hitting.

I'm tearing up! I love this game so much. I own two copies of it, one near-mint. I remember trying to contact Quintet as a kid after completing the game to tell them how much I loved it, but I couldn't get hold of them.

Walking Dead S1 definitely, and Life is Strange.

Got quite emotional for Last Guardian too.
If a game brings me to tears it gets a big thumbs up!

Last Guardian by far. Tears of sadness... and tears of pure joy. I expected a gut punch going in, but what I got was a roller coaster and I wasn't ready.

It was straight up embarrassing. I was dreading my wife coming down stairs to find me a wreck over a goddamn video game.

Awww, I'm sure I would have done the same if I played it as a kid ^o^, because I almost did it after finishing Link's Awakening ^o^.

I love how I found the game in the first place: I was browsing through a second-hand game section of a newspaper (called 'Loot'), and someone was selling a load of games. I read the name 'Terranigma', and without even knowing a thing about the game, something just clicked in my head and said 'you have to buy this'. I literally discovered one of my favourite ever games just because the name sounded good to me.

Persona 4 got me good towards the end, it's an incredible ride from start to finish, 60+hours to be fair, but it's damn good.

I've known the game while reading a very short review of the Japanese version ; Tenchi Souzou and the reviewer said that the game was part of the Soul Blazer trilogy, made by Quintet and probably one of the best A-RPG he ever played ^^.

Sadly I have never been able to purchase the game, it was constantly sold out in France (and we didn't got a lot of copies here...), I only played it with an emulator.

I would buy right away a SNES (or even a SNES NT Analogue with Super Turrican: Director's Cut) if I could get the real game !

TLOU, Red Dead Redemption, FFXV(shaky story but some scenes hit me hard) and MGS3-4's endings.
Can't recall any other, never to the point of bawling tears but had me close.

I don't think I ever really cry but some games have made me feel emotional and maybe choked up a bit. It's the usual ones (Last of Us, Walking Dead, Life is Strange). One game that does stand out for me is Xenogears for PS1. I can't quite remember but I might have shed some real geek tears for that one back in the day.

Quite a few, but then I'm fairly an emotional person. Off the top of my head:

To the Moon
FFX
The Last Guardian (I bawled my eyes out whilst streaming the ending)
Undertale
Ori and the Blind Forest
Valiant Hearts: The Great War (depressed for days after this one)

Honestly, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has been the first game in years where I actually teared up. I think I need to play more jrpg's, these stories are so good.

to me xenoblade 2 is one of the worst when talking about story, so yeah, you really should play more JRPG (i don't try to be condescending, just agreeing with you that there far better RPG out there story wise, and you'll probably enjoy them too)

Prior to 2016 I would've said no game stories have effected me on an emotional level to the extent of crying because of vast majority of them have crap stories or pacing or emotional weight, etc. After 30 years of gaming pretty extensively, The Last Guardian was the first game to make me cry. It was an experience I never had before, which is why I consider the game truly revolutionary on an emotional level.

Runners up would likely be Zelda: Link's Awakening and Xenogears. Though they didn't make me cry, those games did manage to evoke some pretty strong feelings of sadness.

I don't cry much in games, but it's happened a few times.

Final Fantasy X - Might be the best ending ever in a game and one of the best in fiction for me. The high 5 after that "hug" being so crisp and on point despite all the family drama. Damn gets emotional just thinking about it. I think I may have cried 2-3 times from this game.

Legend of Dragoon - When
Lavitz dies.
I couldn't fucking believe it. I was a kid then and completely took me by surprise. I was shook, my second favorite character after Dart.

The Last of Us - No, not the beginning though I was teary eyed. It was the scene with Henry & Sam. I remember because for about two years, I was not sure if gaming was going to be much of a hobby for me, and fucking hell did TLOU give the jolt of a lifetime. Bought it as soon as it came out and finished it in 19 hours in roughly 2 days (Friday after work, Saturday, Sunday morning). I remember it was 2-3AM during this incredible scene with the brothers.
It hit home especially because I have a little sister and could completely understand Sam's POV. If something happened like that in such a scenario, I get it.
