Approximately one year from today they are going to do some sort of stream or Let's Play with
Chrono Trigger and Pokemon Red/Blue.

Merry Christmas, 2018 version of me.

Hey everybody! My account got approved. Nice to be able to jump in and say hi.

Catching up on the community thread, I wanted to talk a little about Don't Skip, because I saw some repeated sentiments I'd like to address.

Don't Skip is definitely not dead. I've just been swamped with reviews the last few months, but I'm hoping the show will be able to pick back up pretty soon.

The show is not as involved as a review. I know that's something Huber said on the podcast, but in most circumstances it doesn't work out that way. The script is shorter and the video edit is typically less detailed than a review (hopefully). That may not sound like a big deal, but is in practice a very big deal that saves substantial time. A good way to see this in practice is to look at the average length of one of our reviews and the average length of a Don't Skip.

Don't Skip is a new initiative that I took on this year that ended up being successful (judging solely by views). Because of that, since we're in year end reflection time, it's something I want to put a much bigger focus on next year. Obviously the proof is in the pudding, but that's the plan.

I saw some talk of it maybe being better if Don't Skip had fewer production values and took on more of a podcast style. I think that's not the best approach for a few reasons:

-Most of our stuff is podcast format, which would make it less distinct.

-Don't Skip is something you can enjoy without any prior knowledge of EZA.

-Don't Skip's focus is on being concise, which is also valuable for the channel.

Just some things I wanted to give my perspective on.

It's Ben...

Edit: To add more substance to this post, I'm very happy that Don't Skips are sticking around in their current form.

Yo, glad to see you made it over here.

Also nice to hear that Don't Skip will continue, it was a pretty cool project.

Hey Ben, is Warhammer Total War 2 something you're planning on returning to or did the end of year releases push it too far away? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the game once having gone through a campaign. I've already put in a hundred hours so don't need to be sold on it but the point of view of someone who isn't as entrenched in the warhammer IP or total war series as I am is fascinating to consider.

Hi Ben, welcome! Glad to see that you've survived the crush that was fall/winter 2017. Also, It's great to hear that Don't Skip will come back in it's current incarnation.

Going back to the Hall of Greats, and seeing Ian's Memories of Myst video, I think it would be cool if they added an extra point that was dedicated specifically to the best argument for a game. This could motivate everyone to up their game when making their points, and it could potentially save those out-of-the-box choices from getting banned for a year if someone makes a strong and creative argument for it. Like, Myst was saved because of this, and I personally thought that Don had a strong argument as well even though Mario Maker is not something I would have personally voted for.

Hi Ben, I think the format of Don't Skip is just right. It's small bite-sized impressions of good games. Not quite a review but, going by the name alone, it won't include actual bad games.

In fact, that's the major benefit to this format. It lets you promote smaller or older games that really deserve attention but sometimes get lost in the avalanche of new releases.

PS: About your Mega Man replay. You should give MM9 a try with Proto Man one day. You get the slide (and the charge shot) but double the damage. I actually loved that differentiation between the two heroes and enjoyed playing through 9 a second time right away. It's a lot of fun, especially since you still have the patterns fresh in your memory.
(I do consider 9 on the same level as 2 and 3, while I'd say 10 is on the level of MM4).

PPS: Xenoblade 2 is SO DAMN GOOD. I feel your rating is fair, if I am trying to look at the game somewhat objectively, but for my own personal enjoyment? Probably a 10/10.

Kyle is the mastermind behind it all. GT and EZA were just one giant Tetris stream bit. Open your eyes, Neo, read the Tetrominos.

He was Kaiser Sose all along

on the offchance you haven't seen The Usual Suspects, do not read the inner spoiler, it kind of might spoil the movie plot
That joke is not quite so fun to say anymore in light of the current situation:( Its still a great movie tho.

Gotta watch the HoG stream skipped last couple pages to avoid accidental spoilers!

Hall of Greats stream was fantastic.

Some thoughts...

Journey (Finished)
Game: Incredible.
Presentation: Botch.

Super Mario Maker (Never Played)
Game: Very high opinion by impression.
Presentation: Great.

Skyrim (Substantial playtime)
Game: Immersive.
Presentation: Super Botch.

Mega Man X (Never Played)
Game: Never played.
Presentation: Very good.

Pokemon Red/Blue (Finished)
Game: Peak Pokemon.
Presentation: Great.

Myst (Never played)
Game: Ugh.
Presentation: Do not like pre-recorded speech (as in the choice of presentation, not Ian's video specifically).

Chrono Trigger (Unfinished)
Game: Not finished, but incredible impressions.
Presentation: Skipped because no stakes.

GTA III (Never played)
Game: Only played Vice City, and... eh?
Presentation: Fine enough.

Streets of Rage II (Never played)
Game: Beat 'm Ups ain't mine.
Presentation: Solid.

Overall my votes would go as follows (Chrono Trigger out of competition)
1 Point: Mega Man X
2 Point: Super Mario Maker
3 Point: Pokemon Red/Blue

Kyle should have gotten a hardcore red card for his miiverse comment. Chat corrected, but I am not sure it registered with Ian who ALMOST gave his on chip to SMM and then said "oh but no online" lmao. Oh boy.

I finished watching the HoG stream, so I can finally check this thread, yay. It was a great stream and I'm happy with the two games that got in. Feels bad that Megaman X got the shaft because Ben voted for others over his own, though, even if Pokemon Red/Blue would have been my own pick. It was really cool of Ben to vote for Ian's over his own because of the effort Ian put into the Myst presentation. I hope they consider that 'no voting for your own pick' rule for future HoG streams. Yeah it would sometimes mean voting for other games over your own even though you consider your pick the best, but I think the emphasis should be on convincing enough people to vote for your pick, rather than considering how much your pick needs votes from you and having to weigh that.

As always, it's sad to see games get banned, too (Don </3). I really enjoyed the new format, though, and hope it sticks around for future HoG streams. Especially the secret point allocation part.

Approximately one year from today they are going to do some sort of stream or Let's Play with
Chrono Trigger and Pokemon Red/Blue.

Merry Christmas, 2018 version of me.

I'm anticipating this stream so much!

I'm so sad.
That journey ban.

Feelsbad. Journey is one of my favourite games. Like Huber, I got a rush of emotions and memories just listening to the OST. I do think Blood could have done a better job arguing for it during the Q&A section, though.

Also, welcome Ben Moore ~ It's good to have you here. It's also good to know that Don't Skip is still alive and well. \o/

Also, between Frame Trap and HoGs, Brad has convinced me to hurry up and finally play Chrono Trigger. I have always wanted to play it but never got around to it for some reason. I'll be playing the DS version, too.

Chrono Trigger is legitimately a top 3 game of all time. It sits just below Star Control 2 to me (as you may have guessed).

Ben Moore welcome! I know this year has been crazy and going with the trails in the sky don't skip was the right call. But I still would love a Rocket Knight Adventures don't skip. It's one of the most overlooked games of that gen. And you had it in the don't skip announcement!

I hope it shows up at some point. I finished it for the first time a couple years ago and was blown away at all the fresh ideas packed into that game. Each could be a whole game and they would use it for half a level

Not a fan of the way HOG was handled at the end.

I like the way it was originally done. With the games going from least amounts to highest.

Yeah, just have Damiani count them and announce them or something. The actual voting process I did love though.

I really liked the Survivor testimonial aspect of it, but I did not like the grab your own bag, haha...that was too brutal.

Patreon is scrapping the fees change plan!

https://blog.patreon.com/not-rolling-out-fees-change/

However, from The Verge:

The payment system will still change, Conte says, because it's too confusing and difficult to scale right now — something that's of particular concern after Patreon closed a $60 million funding round earlier this year. (He says he'll lay out more details on this in a separate post.) But judging by the past week's backlash, it will need to do so in a way that doesn't make artists feel bypassed or blindsided, and reassures smaller creators that Patreon isn't ignoring their needs.

"I'm gonna burn down the establishment and replace it with an even worse establishment"

It would be extremely funny to see that happen... like the champion is always doomed to become corrupted.

huh. surprised there was enough backlash to scare em.

"The payment system will still change, Conte says, because it's too confusing and difficult to scale right now "

do they not just take a flat percentage like Kickstarter? if not... just do that

They themselves do, 5%, but then pass the transaction fees to the creator as well.

I guess they could make it a flat 10% which would give them more profit since the processing fee is less, but it's hard to do that retroactively when Patreon campaigns already have set levels and pledge tiers which creators may have to increase as they'd be seeing less money.

This Hall of Greats was legit the most fun I've ever had watching a group stream. Only Pokèmon Snap and few others come close.

The new voting system was also excellent. I want more now. =(

Do 6 instead of 4 per year! One Hall of Greats every two months!

Welcome, Ben Moore! I'm glad you're here, I always appreciated your presence in the EZA thread.

I'm very glad Don't Skip isn't dead, I thought that was a great addition. I'm looking forward to more of it in the future.

And I'm glad to hear about this too, good to know the backlash did something. Let's hope whatever changes they implement in the future aren't as intrusive.
