Affinity Photo is pretty much the premiere iPad photography app right now, and it's also currently on sale for half-off ($9.99). Far and away the most powerful photo editing software you'll find on iOS. For ebooks, there is of course the built-in iBooks app, but Amazon also has a Kindle app if you prefer their service. There's a thread on gaming side for mobile games if you'd like to check that out.

Re: messaging, even the WiFi models can be used to iMessage with other iOS devices. You just use your email address rather than your phone number. If you have an iPhone, you can use your iPhone's phone number on your iPad (even your WiFi iPad) and have your SMS messages and phone calls sync to and from your iPad too, but you mentioned this is your first Apple product, so that probably doesn't apply to you. WiFi iPad models don't have GPS, but they can use WiFi networks around you to approximate your location good enough for most things (save turn-by-turn directions and whatnot). Screen resolution on the 10.5" iPad Pro is 2224x1668.
Thank you!

There's not a watermarking tool per se, but you can always make one and lower the opacity on the layer, make a custom brush for stamping one on, etc

Eh, still not the solution I was looking for then. I have an export task in LR4 to automatically do it, and was looking for something like that on the iPad. I still have to download to the computer from iCloud then have LR process and send to the places I need.

Oh well.

Yeah, that's kind of the place iOS photography stuff is at now. There's really powerful stuff for doing actual editing, and in some cases having a touch screen or Apple Pencil is a better interface for certain tools, but a lot of the stuff around the fringes like this still works better on a Mac or PC.

Actually, this is kind of the case with lots of creative work on iOS - I can sketch out and write a song in GarageBand on my iPad, but for any serious recording and production I still need to bring it into Logic on my Mac. Things are improving, and the iOS tools are getting more powerful all the time, but it's still not at replace-your-Mac levels (for me, at least).

Regarding reading books on the iPad what's the best reader to use? The default apple one seems to crash a fair bit, and doesn't always display pages (mainly when I'm looking at PDFs of Dungeons and Dragons stuff and/or comics).

Don't know what's going on with the Photos app. The UI performance is a mess. There's lag and jitter everywhere. It's like I'm using it in slow motion. And for some reason it seems to affect the system's general UI performance. When the Photos app is opened, I can't even switch desktops without the animation getting stuck halfway through for a moment. Just like within the app, there's lag, delays and jitter. But it's not as bad as in the app.

Rebooting the system and resetting PRAM and all the standard stuff didn't do anything, but deleting the WindowServer preferences seems to finally have improved the system UI performance. Photos.app, however, is still borderline unusable.

edit: Yeah, deleting the WindowServer prefs made a huge difference.

Surely, I'm not the only one with this issue?
The performance of Photos.app is still absolutely dreadful. It's especially bad when editing pictures. And while the app is opened, the entire system slows down. I can see in Activity Monitor that Photos.app, com.apple.MediaLibraryService and WindowServer are all having a load of 50% or more whenever this happens.

Don't know what to tell you, it works fine on my 2015 rMB. Not super fluent given the processor but not dreadful by any means, even when editing pictures.

This week was a bummer for me in Apple products. First, that Amazon Prime TV app is ugly and not that good, so the wait for something barebones and barely functional is disappointing. My Mac Mini is now obsolete and no updates in sight for the poor little guy that Apple hates. Then, my AirPods started acting funny (one would get very quiet for a few minutes and return to normal volume... maybe listening to things with both in very disorienting). Finally, my 6S+ battery is acting funny where it drops battery percentage at an alarming rate or just skips from like 97% to 91% instantaneously; my Apple appointment showed no sign of what is causing it as my battery still holds a good 89% charge.

For PDFs, give PDF Viewer a try. It's free, gets a lot of updates, and pretty solid viewer.

I wish there was a way to only display a subset of the available emojis in the emoji keyboard. A "Favorites" list or something like that. I don't need the entire list.

There's the "Frequently Used" section, but:
1) Occasionally, even the emojis I use the most disappear from the list
2) Sometimes, it shows emoji I used just once. Sometimes, it shows emojis I've never ever used at all
3) I can't arrange them manually, and the order seems to change all the time
4) It's limited in size

It sucks.

It's meant to be the most recently used, the order is top to bottom, left to right.

I just wish the Emoji keyboard let me search for an emoji like the one on macOS does. (And no I don't want to install another keyboard just to get that ability)

Is there a gesture or something I'm missing? Or is it just not there?

It depends on the app, but you can just type the word and the emoji will appear as a suggestion. Works in Messages, isn't working right now in this text field in Safari.

I know, and I've started using that, but it's not perfect. And only shows 3 Emoji at once. Doesn't work for words you'd think it does too. I want a normal search function.

For instance, it only works for actual graphical popular smiley type emoji. If I type "Copyright" for example, iOS doesn't show me the © symbol but macOS does. If I type "Christmas" on iOS I only get a Christmas tree. On macOS I get the tree, both Santa and Mrs. Claus AND the flag for Christmas Island. It's no replacement for a search. It's really just a convenience for posting smileys.

They could make the box appear either with like a pull down gesture, or maybe make it like spotlight where you swipe one page over from the leftmost page. Or just put one more button on the bottom that's a magnifying glass. I kind of wish it scrolled vertically like the one on macOS, then they could just put it above the Recently Used list. I'm sure there's a reason for it being a horizontal scroll though.

Is there any fix for the "backup failed" error that I constantly get using the latest version of OSX and time machine?

Am I supposed to reformat my backup drive to APFS? Or leave it as HFS+?

A friend is selling me his iphone 7 for a very cheap price compared for what it retails in mexico, so I have two questions.
1- if the phone malfunctions, obviously i will not have warranty so is cheap to send it to repair?
2-Is the phone good enough to last me a lot? i don't want to spend a lot of money and after a short time need the buy another one because of performance issues.

1. This depends on when the device was purchased, honestly. Warranties are tied to when it's bought, so you have a year from when that device was picked up from Apple/the retailer to bring it in for any issues as long as the warranty isn't voided by things like water damage. Since you're in Mexico (I'm assuming the friend is, as well), you can check the coverage here: https://checkcoverage.apple.com/mx/es/. You just need the serial # of the device.
2. Dude, I'm still using a 6, and all I did was get my battery replaced 'cause it's been years. It's still rockin' along. The 7 will be fine for a while - you'll get decent use out of it for more than a year.

So, it's not exactly new, but it seems to be getting worse. My 2016 Macbook Pro, the screen seems to have excessive ghosting/pixel smearing. It's never been great, but I notice it a lot more lately. I have Apple Care. But I'm not sure if this is something they deal with, or if the screen in general is just not great on response time? Anyone had this problem or know?

Huge memory leak in the latest OSX High Sierra, Calendar Agent gradually takes all your RAM. We've had several computers have this now. Very slow to even force quit.

Can't confirm. My Work Mac hasn't been rebooted in two weeks and has 21.6MB used and my home Mac is on 24/7 and hasn't been rebooted since the last OS update and that's using 32.2MB.

If I wanted to track down a Magic Mouse that uses AA batteries, what would I need to look for? They're both called the wireless magic mouse, as far as I can tell...

No replaceable RAM in the iMac Pro as expected. No thanks. Looks like beautiful hardware, though I keep wishing they'd add backlighting to their external keyboards.

Not unless the app itself provides that. The filename is provided to the share sheet by the app. I agree that it would be nice if the Save to Files screen had more of a macOS interface that let you rename and create folders right there.

I wish Apple would just sell black Lightning cables. And USB-C charging cables, for that matter - it sucks that they went all-in on black accessories for the iMac Pro but my expensive-as-hell also-space-gray MacBook Pro still has a white charging cable.

I also wish they'd do black packaging more. They did it for the jet black iPhone 7, the 2013 Mac Pro, and some other things, but imo all their black or space grey products should get black boxes.

I'm curious how much the space gray trackpad and keyboard will go for on eBay, I'm tempted to pay more for them, but then everyone at work would know I spent stupid money on it

You can trace black iPhone packaging all the way back to the original iPhone, only more recently that trend has been changing.

My favourite was the iPhone 5, just sleek and sexy and subdued as hell. Not even a chrome Apple or lettering to be found. The whole dark theme in that slate phone was something else, and paired with the new thin font, there was a bit of an aesthetic zenith there. Even if nowadays I prefer the space grey, that slate was just special and unique. iPhone noir edition.

iphone5-with-box.jpg

Too bad about the scuffing...

Anyway, absolutely, we need Apple to go black more often on accessories, from cables to bricks to AirPods to Apple Pencil. Sometimes I look at the white accessories and cables as a strange relic from the past, a theme that was forgotten to be updated to match the current line of devices. Although, it never gets offensive and I guess that's a bit the point of it. It works.

Wonder how much it's going to cost to bump the Vega 56 to the Vega 64. That's about the only upgrade I would do, otherwise everything I need is at the base $5000 tier

Does Pocket Casts have smart playlists that auto populate when new episodes of selected shows come in? That's one of the only things keeping me tied to Overcast

No clue. I was an Instacast user until Overcast came and Instacast folded practically overnight. Marco just needs to do an entire rewrite of his UI and stop plastering new stuff over presumable older stuff because these UI bugs keep happening with every new release and redesign. And, since he's constantly complaining about Apple losing their touch, it's just ironic that every new UI redesign or tweak breaks and presents me with new bugs... that he never acknowledges or responds to when I've tried submitting them. Reordering a playlist is now a huge chore since his most recent update. This is the only app on a regular basis I have to force quit because of these dumb UI bugs.

Not sure if I fully understand what you mean, but I think there are two ways.

1. Make a filter that's populated by the podcasts you want to watch, narrow it down by including only unfinished (i.e. partially played) and unplayed episodes, both downloaded and not downloaded episodes, and you can further narrow it down to include only episodes within the last weeks/month. These can be sorted oldest to newest or vice-versa. No manual sorting, as far as I'm aware of. I don't recall if Overcast has this kind of episode filtering, but I really love this feature. I've recently started organizing my podcast feed by genres and play states this way, and it has been a revelatory experience.

2. The 'up next' queue can be configured so that specific podcasts' episodes are auto-added to it. I haven't made much use of this though, so I can't really attest to how well it works. Unlike the filters, this queue can be manually sorted (by holding and dragging episodes up/down). However, I think you can only have one such queue.

For what it's worth, I made the switch to Pocket Casts after being a long-time Overcast user and haven't regretted it since. The ads got annoying and it's cheaper to simply buy Pocket Casts than paying the annual fee to get rid of them on Overcast.

Like for example I have a smart playlist that includes all Crooked Media shows. It auto populates with a new episode whenever they are released, and when I finish one it just rolls to the next one. No filtering needed, no manual up next needed, it's exactly like a smart playlist in iTunes: set the parameters and it does the rest.

In Pocket Casts you'd have to make a filter for that podcast (which is like a playlist, I suppose) and that will auto-add new episodes, set whatever parameters, and then select 'play all'. Then they'd all play one after another.

Hmmmmmm. And multiple podcasts can be in that filter? Specific ones, not just genres?

Good news! The podcast controls have magically returned! Bad news, I have 15 hours to finish the latest 2 hour podcast of Giant Bombcast.

Edit: Had to force quit AND delete the podcast, then redownload it to get it working again. Yay...
