I think approaching a utopia like the TOS era is more interesting than actually being in a utopia like the TNG era. Everything in TNG revolves around the Prime Directive - Prime Directive this, Prime Directive that. Picard doesn't ever shut the fuck up about the Prime Directive. The Prime Directive was basically kryptonite that prevented every conflict from being easily solved by the OP Federation. That line of story telling was fine for that time, but I don't think we need it again. I guess they could make it so that there's a breakdown of society after Voyager, but fans would probably riot about that.

TOS had a heck of a lot Prime Directive talk too. It's pretty fundamental to every series in the franchise really, except for Enterprise.

Finale was simply amazeballs. If Lorca keeps this up he'll beat Sisko for most badass Trek captain.

I love Sisko and the whole TNG-era universe of Star Trek but yeah I was just thinking, I'm reeeeally liking Lorca. He's very different and Jason Issacs is compelling in the role. I hope he's with us for the whole run. Not that I'm not up for Captain Tilly, too.

Anyone know when this will continue and how many episodes are left of this season? I must say that I have really enjoyed the series so far, not a big fan of Michael and think there's been too much emphasis put on her in the show but I'm guessing that she will end up as a captain and series is just her redemption from a mutineer to becoming a star fleet captain. Saru and Lorca are fantastic though. And the general production has been seriously impressive, the CGI work is amazing for a TV show and rivals a lot of features, costumes and sets are also really well done. It's even got me to start watching Enterprise as well, which hasn't aged so well but is still entertaining. Looking forward to seeing where they go after the break and with season 2.

Man, I just don't get the love for Tilly. She's just so "try-hard" to me. I don't hate her but definitely don't want her to become a larger focus than she already is.

Six more episodes this season, starting on January 7th.

You're probably gonna have to get used to Michael because she is intended to be the "Main Character" as much anyone can be a "Main Character" on a Star Trek series...

Finally finished the season. Ha sex scene! This still doesn't feel like a Trek show at all. Still enjoyable but gotta go to Orville for that Trek feel

Yeah, I'm starting to get a General Patton vibe from him.

Yeah I don't really enjoy her that much either. Maybe I'm just burned out on the excessively chipper overeager characters, but she just comes off as grating in a bad way to me. You're never going to be captain if you act like you're constantly hyperactive, and mostly I think it's just the fact that she's so clearly A Character on a Show in a way most everyone else isn't. I've yet to ever meet anyone like her in real life, and I've got friends who I could say are just a talking animal sidekick away from being ripped from Disney cartoons.

I know people like her in real life. They ARE grating when you have to deal with them on a daily basis.

Tilly's worst moment was her introduction.

After that, she has been great.

Tilly adds a lightness and optimism the show needs so it doesn't completely gets crushed under the weight of its starkness.

So Star Trek TNG update.

A month ago I did a post about how I started watching TNG and didn't like it, some people in this thread gave me some list to which episodes of the first two season to watch and skip, and Breqesk especially told me about his favorites episodes. A month later I'm halfway through Season 4 (Slow watching because finals) and thank you for those recommendations, especially Measure of a Man. I like trial shows, and that was a really good sci-fi trial episode. Will continue watching and maybe even watch some TOS or DS9 after it.

I can understand why people don't think Discovery is like TNG, because the themes and tone is completely different.

A large part of TNG is very much focused on maintaining peace - and what issues you confront in peacetime, such as civil rights - vs Discovery being anchored more to what one is willing to do to upon the advent of war. If I had to look at any episode from the former that I think could only happen in TNG, it would be The Ensigns of Command. Sure, the general scenario of Federation colonists needing to be evacuated in light of an alien threat could happen in any of them, but I'm not sure the other shows would settle for the rather realpolitik solution that TNG takes. DS9 especially would be appalled at the suggestion that the Federation might force innocent people to abandon their own homes; if Sisko didn't force the Sheliak to turn around at gunpoint, then it's the sort of thing that would feed into the Maquis storyline, with frontier citizens being left to fend for themselves. But in TNG, the peace matters more than pride, and therefore the resolution has to be found by outwitting the Sheliak within wholly legal terms.

I'm so glad to hear it! I really feel like TNG - on Netflix and physical media - should come with some kind of, 'hey, if you're not feeling it, skip ahead to here' guide--so many people miss out on such a wonderful show, just 'cause it starts so terribly.

Anyways, as an aside, I just wrote up my 'ideal dream never gonna happen' Trek game for a thread on Gaming:

What is your "never going to happen" announcement/game ?

Wondering if anyone here has any thoughts?

Glad to hear you are enjoying TNG, Adnor. It's all very quaint nowadays, but I think that adds to the appeal. Picard and the gang aren't wrestling with addictions, aren't killing each other, aren't driven by hubris or pure sociopathy - they're just a collection of colourful dogooders trying to have a good time and learn about space. Sometimes there are problems and they try to deal with them in order to get back to the whole scientific exploration thing.

Sounds good to me. I don't think it's so incredibly unlikely to actually happen though - maybe not right now. Star Trek has a TV series and a potential Tarantino film in the works, but the franchise isn't exactly riding high, it's in more of an experimental period where people are trying their hand at it, seeing what sticks. Maybe that's as good a time as any to make a game like this, but it's probably kind of risky to invest a lot in it expecting huge sales right now.

From what you've described, I don't think it needs to be AAA budget, though. You could get a lot out of limited resources in a game set in space where most of the content is dialogue-based. It'd definitely be cool to have a proper, well-made and modern Star Trek game.

A guy in the Greatest Discovery Facebook group made these. The Greatest Discovery is a Star Trek Discovery review podcast which is great and you should all listen to it. The art is supposed to reflect the Juan Ortiz posters he made for every episode of TNG. The Ortiz art is featured on the Portfolio Prints trading cards the hosts of the podcast opened on a recurring bit on their TNG podcast The Greatest Generation which you should really listen to if you are a TNG fan.

People dislike Tilly?

I think it's obvious she's on the spectrum (aspergers perhaps)

She's fun imo

Tilly's great. My whole household adores her. Three adults ages 28-31 and a cat age 10. I think that's pretty definitive.

I think it's clear she's going to have to go through some serious character growth before she becomes captain, and no doubt Michael will be a positive influence on her towards that goal. I can also imagine the crew is has lots of hardships ahead of them, that could change anybody. Like Voyager, for example, by the end of it Kim would have been a better captain than Janeway could have been. Actually you could probably make that argument for the entire crew.

I think Tilly is great - I definitely assumed she was supposed to be on the Spectrum.

Ironically I think Michael is probably the weakest of the main cast (apart from perhaps the Doctor, but he hasn't had enough screen time for me to even remember his name yet). I don't particularly dislike her though.

Having been one before, Tilly is the epitome of every bright-eyed, enthusiastic cadet out there -- down to the over-eager social awkwardness.

Didn't she say she had some issues she was working out during the first eps? But I don't think she ever said exactly what it was, obviously she'll need to grow and develop before she gets a captains chair, or even become an XO

I know she tells Michael she's surprised she's gotten a roommate because they told her she wouldn't due to her "issue." Which turned out to be her snoring.

Tilly tells Michael that they told her because of her "special needs" she coudn't have a room-mate so she definitely wasn't referring to her snoring.
I'm like 90% sure ivy said this was in reference to her allergies. And to me Tilly just comes across as sheltered, naive, and socially awkward. Not as someone who is on any spectrum.

I've been rewatching the TOS, and I have to admit, it is head and shoulders above the current show. The first encounter with the Romulans, for instance, is one of the best I've seen on Star Trek. They were able to produce some incredibly engaging stories with such a low budget.

I have never been a TOS fan, it's just ok to me... still I must agree this show is not beating TOS, but DISCOVERY still somewhat watchable to me...
But if this show ran at the same time as the other Trek shows, this one would not stand a chance.

It annoys me that every Romulan and Vulcan has the same haircut, just makes every race look small and not very diverse.

Romulans don't in TOS
