I prefer 2D platformers or at least more linear 3D platformers (like Galaxy or 3D World)... But I reaaly enjoy it. I didn't think I would as much as I do. It's like visiting a gallery of dev's creativity. Something interesting to see or to do everywhere and exploration is really rewarding. I've played 64 many years after its release and didn't really dig that but Odyssey is leagues better. I love all the additional challenges turning the game into more traditional platformer.

I also have no idea how people are beating it in 10 hours. I have 4 hours already in game and I'm just finishing the 3rd kingdom.

P.S. Photo mode should be mandatory in every vidyagame.

Odyssey may be unable to wrest the GOTY crown from BOTW's grasp because of how that game rebooted a series, and it's possible that its platforming challenges won't stand up to repeated playthroughs quite as well as World and 64, but time spent with a game has never been more joyful than with this.

Weirdest thing happened, I got a little watery eyed playing the new donk city festival level. Just an incredible thing to experience, I was beaming playing it

I love this game so much

Haven't got on to well with the last few Mario games...

But this is great, love exploring the levels, getting as many moons as I can before I move on to the next. Think I've played for around 6 hours and I'm only on the fourth world.

Just finished the story and this game is really great. Possibly even makes my personal top 10 of all time. I doubt it will dethrone Persona 5 as my GOTY.

Ending sequence after the final boss fight was just perfect.

I finished the main story, and I am still dazed by the ending. It was so weird and bizarre, I never would have expected that from a mainline Mario game. Heck, by any standard in the series that was the strangest ending by a mile. I wasn't enjoying the game much since I had seen pretty much all of the worlds and all the surprise was gone-then I beat the luncheon kingdom. Never in my wildest imagination would I have expected that to be referenced in Mario. Everything from that point on was a masterpiece and the game just kept going bigger and more over the top.

Odyssey might not be as epic or grand as Galaxy, but it's so bizzare, kooky and audacious I really can't help but love it. Motokura is a genius.

Zips. OMG zips!!!
What this game has over BOTW is that feeling that every world is magical and full to the brim with creativity. BOTW although great gameplay wise was a bit too grounded in its world, lore and inhabitants. Almost bound by its own rules. No rules in Mario :D

That festival in New Donk City... So beautiful! I just stood there for a few minutes, enjoying the music while watching Mario dance... How is Nintendo ever going to top this? Future Marios will simply be Odyssey with new levels.

Just as a follow up since I just woke up hung over and wanted to get in a half hour of Mario time before work.

Turns out my girlfriend played like 5 hours yesterday when I was out. On my save. She doesn't understand why I'm pissed. Don't know how to handle this situation. Went from 62 to 120 moons. Should I just start over? :(

Me: "Why didn't you start your own save?"
Her: "But it was our save, why are you mad?"
id start a new save. In my house whenever I get a new game I set ground rules with my 8 year old daughter and wife around what we can play alone and together. Eg I my wife wants to see the story bits of Zelda but doesn't care about side quests or shrines. Mario is a together game and my daughter has her own save file so she can't get moons without us.

Always worthwhile having that convo so you don't end up in a situation like this.

You make that sound like a bad thing

And we all thought the same thing after Mario Galaxy

I want Odyssey 2 and I want dlc for Odyssey 1. Give it to me Nintendo!!!

I have been dreaming about this game last night. It's that kind of childish fun no other game can accomplish. Nintendo is back, big time, and I love it. It is a shame that this is the last big Nintendo release of the year, makes me already nostalgic. Bring on Metroid I guess?

After 5 hours or so playing this with a friend, we're both still in awe of how *weird* this game is. Also, really not digging the motion controls with the Pro controller.

I thought I'd been waiting for a Mario game with this kind of freedom to explore since Sunshine, but I'm wondering now if I was mostly just missing Mario's acrobatic moveset. I'm kinda pining for Galaxy's tight level design now.

I finished the story tonight. This is now my favorite Mario game, and I will 100% this. The New Donk City festival and the finale both made me smile way too much.

I can't believe how crazy and wonderful the ending sequence is. Just absolutely insane, I think it's equal in insanity and excitement to the endings of Bayonetta and the Wonderful 101. Everything from the Luncheon Kingdom on is incredible, so many insane settings, great bosses, and it all flows together so well, with perfect pacing. Nintendo hit it out of the park with this one, I can't wait to go back and work on the remaining 600+ moons.

Just had my first scrap with
Bowser.

Cracking fight. God I adore this game. Having never played a Mario platformer before, this is blowing me away.

Hi everyone! Just got my account approved and this is my first post. I'm happy that we have this place to discuss this incredible game and do it in good conscious.

I'm about 9 kingdoms in and absolutely in love with the game so far. Will post more thoughts later, just wanted to say hi for now.

I have no money, so I couldn't buy a Switch and play this game.

You have no idea how is difficult for me not opening all these spoilers...

Every aspect of this game, from music to graphics to gameplay to the sheer amount of insane creativity is just phenomenal.

I think it says a lot that there's a large part of me that actively avoids playing this game simply because I don't want it to end.

Been playing this almost non stop since I got it on Thursday.

I'm nearing the end I think, but I have no idea how many moons I've collected as I haven't stopped once to check. It's all blurred into one awesome experience.

the naming structure of the levels implies to me that we'll either have DLC or a sequel that uses similar assets but shows new areas

(ie Sand Kingdom -- Notsterina, Treetop Kingdom -- Other Gardens, etc)

I'm in, what I assume is the final Kingdom? At least during the main story.

Bowser's Kingdom. And man, when I got to the Ruined Kingdom...when I saw people mention how this game turns into Dark Souls later on I assumed they were talking about the difficulty, I didn't think they meant literally.

Also, just out of curiosity. So every new Kingdom you visit has one or two main objectives and boss fights associated to those. Are these actually mandatory for beating the main story, or would it be enough to simply get the necessary amount of Power Moons? Been wondering about this the whole time.

Also, in Luncheon Kingdom I found a portrait
that carried me to Yoshi's house and there was Peach's castle in the background and lots of coins, indicating that you can go there eventually, which is nice.

So, is it possible to get all purple coins from the desert world? I know some moons can't be gotten initially. I'm at 97 and have been looking everywhere.

Picked up a pro controller today and I love how it feels and plays. However I will be returning it because the dpad is complete shit. I can't even play Tetris on it. Googled it and they are all like that? Holy shit. How disappointing.

I beat the game about an hour ago. Exploring the ridiculous post game content now. No spoilers, but from start to finish this game was pure joy. The pacing was just right. The tonal shifts really sell the idea of this being Mario's odyssey. The end sequence(s) are insane in the right way. This is the best 3d Mario game to date. I know it sounds like hyperbole, but after beating the game this tops Zelda BOTW as the easiest 10 out of 10 in my mind. This game is pure magic. The developers were on fire when making this, from top to bottom.

I wish there were more villages/towns. The game takes us to a bunch of neat places, but they're pretty much tourist attractions and outdoor spaces.

This is the first game since Breath of the Wild where I haven't been able to stop playing for hours on end. Such a great game.

(Account approved, woho!)
