Gal Metal is a drum and rhythm game where characters perform on stage. Unlike other rhythm games, where musical notes fly onto the screen, there are no musical notes in Gal Metal. Gal Metal is a completely new type of music game where players can freely construct their own rhythm to put on a performance. You swing the Joy-Cons to strike the drums as if you are playing air drums. The music genre is heavy metal. The scenario is written by Shuuhou Imai, and the manga scenes are illustrated by Toshinao Aoki.

Drummer. The male protagonist was fused with the female high school student Rinko Hoshino, and now their spirits co-exist. Rinko has considerable drumming technique, and uses Spartan education methods to teach the protagonist.

Kia Bansui

Synth. She is a shut-in otaku whose hobbies consist of online games and web browsing. She believes in the existence of UFOs and aliens, and even hacked the FBI in order to investigate the Roswell incident (according to her). She has a wealth of knowledge in regards to sci-fi and the occult.

Mani Kurobarain

Bassist. The daughter of the Kurobarain Group. She was raised in a strict household. She loves horror movies and goes to the movie theater often. She becomes more self-assertive after meeting the Metal Club.

Shiimi Shindori

Lead guitarist. In one word, she is a delinquent. She is without a father, but has a younger brother who she often takes care of because her mother is busy. She is surprisingly good at cooking and the like. Her guitar was left behind by her father and even now still sleeps beside her.

Erii Kurofuto

Rhythm guitarist. She is shy and has social anxiety. She usually wears glasses, but since she removes them during concerts, she can barely see. She is OK to play concerts in public when she cannot see. Her entire family is fat, but she is the only skinny one.

This is the second rhythm game that I know of on the Switch. The other being Floor Kids. The use of the motion controls and joycons as drumsticks looks really awesome! I think this is the first motion controlled rhythm game on Switch. The art style is interesting too!

There is Voez, which was a launch title if I'm not mistaken and Superbeat Xonic on the console.

I really like rhythm games, but this doesn't sound appealing at all.

Oh yea, I forgot about Voez. It's on my eShop wishlist too, haha. This game really makes me want another Wii Music style game from the trailers.

Amazing concept that will likely be mired by shitty controls. I do like the freestyling aspect though.

i really like the style and concept (and want to support my man tak fujii), but yeah, i'm still not 100% sure about the gameplay. it just all sounds very loosely defined.

I really like the style of the characters. They have a weird, homely feel to them.

There's also Deemo, from the people that made Voez, if you like piano music.

I LOVE the idea of a more free-form approach, but unless I can strap another set of joycons to my feet and destroy them by playing bass drum + hi-hat or double-bass drum, then I could see this being a pass.

I REALLY like divorcing the performance from predetermined sequences, though. I have always felt like rhythm/music games had room to include variance while still rating accuracy and consistency.

Edit: game looks fucking cool.

I have a feeling reviewers won't "get" this game, but I'm totally on board for some Tak Fuji insanity.

Day one if they ever localize it.

I love everything about this except how the gameplay sounds and the fact that there's no original music... Will wait for impressions, I guess. Please be good.

Game looks all kinds of cool, like a Japanese indie project. Thanks for making a thread. Watch the how to play video guys don't just go by the text. Although it's mostly the tutorial, I dunno how you have to perform in a song to be good at it. I'm sure controls work better than Wii Music with better motion sensors in the joycons at least (doesn't ARMS work more consistently and precisely than Wii Boxing - even though its gameplay isn't as spammy as that?). Plus it's all about schoolgirls without making them sexualized lolis with huge breasts etc, how cool is that? The motion comic story scenes look neat too even if I don't understand anything.

feels limited with just the 2 controllers. I really want a bass pedal of some sort.

I really hope they put a demo on the eShop for this - this sounds extremely like my shit on paper, but I'd have to try the controls to be a believer.

I'm effing in, my dudes! Rhythm games are my literal jam, especially the type that make their way to Nintendo hardware.

I hope it gets localized cos the story looks cool/funny. Game looks seriously low budget with those less-than-ps2 3d models so I have to imagine it's a passion project by those few involved in the company. What else have they made, never heard of them. The story is apparently a collab with some famous manga dude or something?

Also, joycons have buttons too, maybe you use those for pedals. Although I'm sure it's far from a realistic sim, just an arcadey game, so maybe it has none of that.

I strongly doubt this is going to remain stuck in Japan. Gal Metal is just too great a concept with too many smaller US publishers who'd seem perfect to localize it for it to remain stuck there. Music licensing rights might be a sticking point, though.

I'm not really a fan of freeform music games so this isn't really my style but I want to say that I absolutely love the art style of this. The conspiracy theorist keyboard player's design is amazing.

Is the tracklist posted anywhere online? Also any guess's on who might localize it? I could see NISA or XSeed taking a stab at this.

Definitely gonna import just for a laugh, I love me some rhythm game but I need the structure. Looks fun enough though.

Oh, hey! I've been waiting for this to come out. Still a bit of a ways to go it seems but it looks fun.

Yeah, this is the sort of smaller, unorthodox, game that handhelds and earlier generations consoles had that unfortunately started dying with the rising costs of development that I hoped the Switch could become a new house for.

It looks and sounds like an obscure Genesis/PS2/GBA/PSP game to me.

Also, it's not completely free of structure as explained here, it simply allows you to mix and match stuff somehow it seems, though the controls appear super simple, no pedal buttons and shit (for now):

Joy-Cons

Put on a metal performance by swinging around the left and right Joy-Cons.

  • When swinging the left Joy-Con, the snare drum will sound.
  • When swinging both Joy-Cons, the cymbal will sound.
  • When swinging the right Joy-Con, the kick drum will sound.
Rhythm Pattern

Freely combine rhythm patterns to put on a performance.

First, practice and learn a rhythm pattern. There are various patterns, from simple patterns to more difficult patterns. They are easy for beginners to get into, as well as loaded with challenging elements that even advanced users can enjoy. You can freely combine the rhythm patterns you have learned to put on a performance and make the metal more exciting. If you only use the same rhythm, you score will not increase. Be sure to combine various rhythms in various patterns to earn a combo bonus.

So I guess it's like you're not just following the song the way the rest of the band probably does but also put on a performance to make it interesting and increase your score. So I guess it's kinda cool in that you'll have to memorize the patterns and use as you see fit rather than just see them flashing on screen in a certain order. Maybe. I'd guess you still need to somewhat keep the song rhythm while you show off.

Cool idea, but I can't see it really working in practice. I need some sort of tactile feedback for rhythm games. We'll see though.

Tak Fuji Heavy Metal Anime Rythym game? Oh Fuck Yes. At this point I cab only assume his games are a result of some sort of massive coke related fever dream, and I absolutely love the fact that he is still allowed to make games. That plot is all sorts of Pervy though, or is it just me who thinks a guy inhabiting a girls body can go wrong as hell?

It looks innocent enough in the art style other than the intro having the dude look down to see he has boobs and then have to dress with a skirt to go to school, lol. It doesn't look sexualized at all other than that.

This may sound bad, but I didn't even read that part of the article until you said that, haha. It can be pervy, but I don't see the game going in that direction. I guess that's what happened when they got abducted by aliens. I see it as sort of a Freaky Friday/Hot Chick thing.

I have a feeling the controls will ruin this game, other than that cool concept.

I might buy it if it gets localized and is sold at a reasonable price.
