Frankly, even if you take away the off-putting CGI, this trailer had nothing of interest.

Neither does this movie. It's only one character that got her shit all fucked up.

I also wouldn't say that Alita looks particularly anime. She just looks like a non-specific cartoon character.
Idk how to describe it but it's there, to say the least.

Alita is mostly CG though. GITS mainly used real actors with few exceptions.

Since you're asking for something specific, I'll say this without spoiling Gits...There is a scene in the movie where Major's face is taken off to show her machine-based side. The eyes that were moving around confused in that scene were still hers while on a cg face. It should be near the halfway point in the movie. I can't gif it because it's during an important plot point.

That was just one small scene that required CG.

Oh wow, another action movie with a female lead that nerdy males will hate for many rationalized reasons. Color me surprised and shocked.

So I haven't been following this movie at all, so why is this characted CG as opposed to the others?

I feel like you'd need to see the Gits movie to understand my point of view on this conversation and why I think using the anime contacts + human face wouldn't be an issue for a CG body and instead would be an improvement.

Not to jump on any bandwagon here, but this comment is why doing a bit of reading and research is important.

Yes, that's what I thought.
As for "why", I already explained above. They went out of their way (speaking of, to all those posters: yes, everybody realizes the big eyes are intentional and are meant to look odd, thanks) to make her look unnatural, to the point where it grosses people out and immediately reminds me of those weird overdone surgery pics, when that simply wasn't needed. She's not supposed to have an alien face.

I feel like you'd get the same problems LA Noire had where everything below the neck wouldn't match the head.

She reminds me of Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite now that I think about it. Right down to the stupidly eerie big eyes.

Elizabeth exists in a cartoony world though. She's kind of taken from Tangled, for obvious reasons.

I don't think Alita is supposed to have unnatural face.
Her past life, Yoko, has the same face as she does.

These two are exactly what she kept reminding me of.

It's just such a misguided decision to go with this stuff in a live action environment.

I know nothing about the source material. But that looked really good and not like an RR movie at all.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that after the first 10 mins of the film, anybody watching it will have gotten used to her look and this whole thread full of reactions is gonna seem dumb.

The CG looking rough altogether right now is what looks weird. Her design is fine.
Well thats not my worry, my worry is getting people to the theater to begin with. I fear people will be so creeped out by the trailers they won't go. :(

I'm a huge GUNNM/Alita fan. Her appearance in this trailer makes no sense at all. She's a cyborg and her head is artificial, yes, but it's designed to look like a human woman extrapolated from the biological body she had as a child. There's zero justification for this alien face, even if it didn't look freaky as hell.

It's sad that we've waited so many years for... this.

I feel like Akira, if it ever gets made, is gonna be the culmination of learning so many lessons that a lot of these anime live-action movies are doing. What's right and whats wrong. A lot of these movies are experiments.

Gotta agree with others that giving her (and only her, I guess) those giant anime eyes wasn't the right call. It's seriously way too distracting. It's especially weird they picked an actress who already had big eyes...only to superimpose on her gigantic eyes. Weren't her arms and body evidence enough she wasn't entirely human?

And a $150M-$200M budget? I can't see this performing well even if it does turn out to be good. Didn't they learn anything from the Ghost in the Shell adaptation? Maybe it might be releasing with no competi-

>two weeks after Ant-Man and the Wasp, same week as Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, one week before Mission Impossible 6

...yeah this film is being sent out to die.

If you are gonna cg the hell out of the main character to get her closer to the manga. JUST MAKE A FULL CG MOVIE.

For that to happen, we'd need Hollywood to actually want to take a chance on a CG animated film that is neither for kids/families (most American CG animated films) or a comedy (South Park: BLAU and Sausage Party). The one exception to the rule that immediately comes to mind --the 2009 film adaptation of the animated short 9-- didn't set the box office on fire. :/

Getting off the eye point.

The trailer has several issues for me.

1. Its too bright

2. Yugo is a piece of shit, scum of the earth and yet the trailer suggest at worst he's generic bad boy plucky love interest.

3. Nothing suggest any of Battle Angel's signature gratuitous violence

4. It's too clean. Nothing looks obscenely grotesque

5. There's not a single truly world establishing moment.

This trailer has cursory things that suggest they at least watched the ova.

But if they wanted my faith in this project. They'd have included a scene like this.

She looks like someone was dicking around in the character creator. I can't shake that feeling.

I hope the whole story isn't I want this dumb boy to love me. That'd be so boring

That's the thing, I have no idea what this is supposed to be rated

Like it's Robert Rodriguez, he can do stupid gore. But are they going for PG-13? I certainly hope not

Sausage Party, but that movie's budget was super cheap due to the studio barely paying their employees.

Akira is the white whale of Hollywood fuck ups. It's the elephant in the room of adaptation disasters in the making.

Give it the John Wick dude or I don't want to see it.

I know we've only seen very little in the trailer, but the weirdest thing is that I'm getting no evidence from the footage shown that they actually used the performance capture headrig that they were supposed to.

Alita has that uncanny look of one part of her face emoting, whilst the remainder seem completely detached. She might be saying something and her eyes are stuck frozen or vice versa. Her face doesn't seem to emote as a whole and that's what seems so weird in an old-school CG Uncanney Zemeckis way.

My interest has been piqued. The action scenes are still a bit rough but the big eyes are fine for me. For some weird reason. i find it refreshing to be constantly reminded due to her eyes that she is still a robot even during closeups.

At some point that creativity we put in comic book movies has to carry over to anime/manga. We can make Jack Kirby's weird shit come to life. We shouldn't be struggling on this forever.
When it comes to anime, Speed Racer already nailed that shit as much as anyone ever will.

If WB is going to blow $150 - $200m on an AKIRA flop, they may as well give it to the Wachowskis to give us a glimmer of former hope.

The only guy I think I can give unconditional faith to for a movie like this is Denis Villeneuve. He made the impossibly perfect sequel to Blade Runner, Dune is next, Akira would fit that trend he seems to be going for.

This actually looks pretty good? I haven't read the manga yet but I've heard positive things about this trailer from people who have. The eyes are definitely off-putting but I think it looks good and in line with what I've seen of the manga (her character is the only one with big "anime eyes") so I imagine it plays into her character somehow or at least is a very intentional part of her design. Definitely unsettling, but not in a bad way to me since it adds to the robotic/designed aspect of her character.

Except that's not true at all. All you had to do was read a few posts above yours where a screencap of Hugo was posted.

Her eyes seem pretty normal to me:
