Got my iPhone X yesterday. I still refuse to believe that there wasn't a single person in all of Apple who looked at the notch and didn't tell anyone it's a terrible design decision. Like you're telling me no one at Apple played a video in landscape and didn't see any issues?? I feel the Samsung Galaxy S8 did this concept far better, and I say that as someone who has never owned an Android device and has had every iPhone from 4 onward.

Took me a few hours to get used to not having a home button (the amount of times I felt for the home button in the dark is hilarious) but I'm quickly adjusting to the whole Face ID, pretty snappy. I do miss the home button in certain case edges but I like how little real estate there is on the phone as the result of it being removed. I actually like the new combo for screenshots and the like, and how much is mapped to the side button (double click to pay and other things is very nice!).

I do wish you could remove the bottom...home bar from appearing over apps via a setting or something, slightly annoying it being always present.

I do love the weight of the iPhone X, sure it's heavier than the 6/7/8 but it feels great in my hand.

I've mentioned this a lot earlier in the thread but the notch is Apple's new defining design of the iPhone. It makes the iPhone instantly recognisable.

Before, in films and on TV we all instantly recognised an iPhone usually by its Home button, regardless of it was a 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7. For 10 years we've instantly recognised iPhones. Now going forward we will recognise an iPhone by the notch. Indeed, this is how I instantly recognise an iPhone X when I see someone else using it.

Now I know nothing about Android phones and I actually wouldn't recognise a Samsung Galaxy S8 if I saw somebody using one. In fact I see people using Android handsets every day (no round Home button or X notch) and I have no clue what actual phone they're using.

The "official" Apple statement is that the notch is there because it houses "one of the most densely packed technology areas".

[The notch includes a 7-megapixel camera, an infrared camera, a flood illuminator, a proximity sensor, an ambient light sensor, a speaker, a microphone, and a dot projector, all of which powers the TrueDepth system that enables Face ID and other features like Animoji.] -Macrumors

But indirectly we now have the new recognisable element of an iPhone.

The notch is very much about the branding of the iPhone, it probably could have been smaller but then it wouldn't be as recognizable.

Without the homebutton or the notch it's just another rectangle and you can't use that as a brand.

The notch gets invisible, and I even enjoy the way it looks when I'm paying attention to it on purpose.

But...

I am forced to used the control center more often to be aware of all the stuff that would usually be displayed in the top bar. Bluetooth, DND and orientation lock are the main hits for me.

Yeah that's really the only issue I have with the notch, is how some status bar icons had to be removed. I don't miss most of them, but not being able to easily see VPN status seems like somewhat of a security oversight.

I didn't realize the X screen is actually bigger than the 7+'s. The phone is just smaller.

Well, fuck. Now I really want one.

Just got the X, seems cool so far but... man why does that bottom bar stay on while you are in apps? It's driving me crazy in games. There's no way to turn it off?
The bar is always there, it's faded out in apps that are properly updated though as to avoid accidental exits of apps/games.

People act like removing the notch would mean adding more screen where the notch is when it actually means removing the "ears", therefore losing screen. Why would anyone want that? The camera and sensors have to go somewhere.

Most of what the notch is hiding is just the status bar. I don't understand who cares except people who extensively watch cinematic aspect ratio films on their fucking phone.

I got mine tonight but I'm returning it. Right side of the screen looks pink and the rest of the phone doesn't. Such a bummer.

I don't mind the notch, even for landscape orientation gaming, but what I do mind is that Apple decided to force the opposite side of the phone to have an equal amount of unusable space. It's so weird to see game menus just end at a designated invisible line while the background continues to the end of the phone.

The only instance the notch bothers me is with games that scale to full screen but haven't had their ui updated to move any elements that land under it. Plenty of games updated for iOS 11/64bit unfortunately fall under this category.

I got the phone and a case at launch.

I haven't had the option to try wireless charging until I went to IKEA a few days ago and realised my phone wasn't charging, took the case off then it started charging. Oops. Is the apple silicone case any good? I'm thinking of a white one since the phone is silver and I hardly even notice as my case is black.

Notch drives me crazy when watching movies. I wish they'd let you pillarbox that area . It'll ruin the symmetry but I'd rather have that than a notch.

I struggle to see how the notch is an issue in movies, you can zoom out and it makes that whole area purely black. I don't watch videos any other way

By the way while testing this I loaded up 4K HDR Great Gatsby, holy shit. Looked phenomenal

I have the official Apple leather case for my iPhone X. When I go running I like to take the case off so I don't sweat on the case itself, but every single time I take it off I always end up taking a screenshot. The exact same thing happens when I put it back on. Does anyone else have this problem? The button combination is just strange to me.

There's even some instances where I accidentally take a screenshot even with my case on because I'm trying to reach for the power button to wake up the screen while I'm homding my phone with my left hand.

I understand why the combination exist, but it's starting to get annoying.

Just tap on the screen itself.

No need to struggle, if it doesn't bother you don't worry about it lol.

Tbh I probably wouldn't have been bothered by it either if I wasn't spoiled by ultrawides and other edge to edge screens.
Watch videos in the correct aspect ratio and the notch doesn't get in the way.

Apple give us more usable screen and people still complain. The other phones would just black out the entire top of the screen and have the status bar under that and have an even smaller screen.

The entire right side of the screen. Most of the way top to bottom.
Ahh, thats crazy.
I think I have slight pink edges on the screen on my phone but going by a screen thread on macrumors all the screens seem to vary in this department. I dont want to end up with a worse screen or a phone with a diff issue.

The battery lasts forever with Low Power mode and smart inverted colors.

Never seen a phone last this long.
