On ep 11 of Moteki and I guess it won't get any better, eh. I guess I got this far, I'll see it to the end. I don't think I've ever experienced a piece of media where the MC was as annoying as in this. What makes me even sadder is that there are probably quite a bunch of people acting more or less like that.

I feel like I should watch all 3 Ushijima-kun movies to wash out the bad taste Moteki left in my mouth. At least there annoying/stupid people face serious consequences for their actions. In a way, it's quite cathartic.
Have there been any really really good ones the last 5 years? Havent been following this stuff for ages. Like densha otoko/cat's eye
As mentioned before, Million Yen Women is really good.
Aside from that, 2 personal recommendations from me:

Hero Yoshihiko - a great, "low budget" parody of Dragon Quest (and other JRPG tropes). All 3 seasons are worth a watch.

Ushijima the loan shark - 3 seasons + 3 movies, I've only watched the TV series but it's a really good, dark story about a group of loan sharks. Has some lighter moments as well.

Where are you guys watching these shows(Just saw the OP, nothing illicit. Any streaming services?)? My wife is running dry on shows and is resorting to real old stuff. So I need to keep her up to speed on the new hotness.

Netflix has a bunch of stuff, even outside Japan. For example Million Yen Women.

Crunchyroll has a few things (I think they have Liar Game, which I enjoyed. Plus that bad Death Note drama), as well as Amazon (Gin to Kin is the only one I know, might be more).

Amazon Prime, AbemaTV and FOD has me covered. Not sure if anything beside Prime works outside of Japan though.

Finished watching the Moteki movie and I think it was even worse than the series. Yes, the music usage was nice, but at moments it felt almost like the action was there for the music, not the other way round, kind of like a music video.
Aside from that, most characters were terrible people, as usual. At one point for a moment I thought that MC actually started being half decent, but he destroyed that facade very quickly.
As for good things to say about it... I guess other characters were often calling MC out for his terrible actions and attitude. Not that it changed anything.

It's just hilarious to see the trainwreck and the MC fucking it up all the time even though everything's handed to him. That's the whole premise of the show! It wouldn't be as funny or interesting if he managed to be happy and settle down. I guess going in expecting it to be a traditional romcom with an happy ending, sweet and naive characters will lead to disappointment. I think it's pretty realistic, I like casts of jaded, very flawed characters haha

I wasn't even expecting a regular romcom, it's just that watching a bunch of people hurting each other in this series was way above my treshold for schadenfreude.

New Sakamoto drama announced!!

A girl (Suzu Hirose) has lost her family and is cast out from society. She meets an old woman (Yuko Tanaka). Both of them do not have faith in other people, but they feel something for each other. The old woman hides the girl. An incident occurs.

Yuko Tanaka previously worked with Director Nobuo Mizuta and Screenwriter Yuji Sakamoto in 2010 NTV drama series "Mother" and 2013 NTV drama series "Woman: My Life for My Children."

Suze Hirose lead for Sakamoto drama? hype levels dangerous
I was disappointed with Kaito Yamaneko, just too cheesy for my tastes. But we're watching My Little Sister (Koreeda flick from a few years back) and it's ok but she is good in it. Seen her in anything else?
(Super hyped for Sakamoto regardless.)

she was cute in bitter blood tho it was a minor role
also good in gakkou no kaidan

this will be a real test of her acting ability to play something other than a shy highschooler

True, I've only seen her in roles where she fit that bill. Well, I guess Kaito is a bit off track of that.
Really want to check out Bitter Blood, i've been on a real Watabe kick since you pointed me in Uso no Sensou's direction. We watched Keishicho Ikimono Gakkari and he was awesome in it. Gakkou looks good, thanks for the tip!

edit: a few that notable one that I remember were galileo, at home dad, 1 litre of tears, and possibly more that I can't remember on top of my head

Haven't seen anything new since Marumaru Tsuma. Can you guys suggest some good shows which came since then?
I guess I'll watch Code Blue 3, just for YamaPi, Toda Erika and Aragaki Yui, love 'em.

Looks like Video Girl Ai is a "sequel" to the original work. I'd think I"s would be an easier convert to drama for a Masakazu work since it is already basically a teen melodrama as written.

Instead of making a new thread, thought it would be more interesting for the people here.

"My Brothers Husband" is getting a drama adaptation in March! The manga is about a gay couple and their daughter, one Japanese and the other Canadian. Really made a splash here in Japan for all kinds of people. Most of which say things like it was eye opening about being compassionate towards others. Even seen one amazon review where a lady made her kids read it.

Hope the adaptation is as well received as the manga has been so far.

Looking forward to this, especially as it has Ryuta Sato in it and somehow I still haven't seen anything besides Rookies with him in.

Four episodes into Good Morning Call S2 and loving it, though I'd forgotten how much of a jerk Uehara is. That and how old-fashioned the relationship is, lol.

Up to episode eight of the first season of Good Morning Call. This show is my jam. It's just perfect. Likeable MC, great supporting cast and just plain fun. Great stuff.

Seems I am in some kind of Aragaki Yui rabbit hole. Watched Nigeru wa Haji and Okitagmi. Just started with Zenkai Girl and have Legal High ready to go.

Million Yen Women is recent, great and pretty easy to watch (Netflix). Give that a go?

Bit of a random thought but does anyone know the status of that Netflix drama based on Jimmy Onishi's life? I remember there being a placeholder for it a while back (along with the FF XIV drama before it released) but haven't seen anything since.

Welp. Glad the guy is being cut out of the show, even if it's a shame the release is a ways off again. Thanks for the info :)

Finished Good Morning Call S2 earlier today. Good fun, though I do prefer the first season. I do love how bubbly Nao is though so I'll take another season if they have it in them :3

On a side note I noticed Netflix has Kantaro now - anyone given it a go?

That manga is in my Amazon wishlist. That's awesome. I hope the adaptation is good.

I gave into my own curiosity and I'm now halfway through the series. This show is bizarre and I kinda love it. You get to watch Kantaro eat desserts while he's meant to be working, describing the dishes and the establishments (which are real places) in excruciating detail, before his own euphoria takes over and suddenly the protagonist is getting drenched in syrup, everyone has a fruit for a head and Winston Churchill is appearing in the sky. I'd love to see what the manga was like to warrant this, lol.

It is basically a live action version of the animes (and mangas I'm assuming) Food Wars, or Jakitate!! Japan

I've seen a few cooking anime but none of them really grabbed my attention quite like this has. Toriko and (what I've seen of) Food Wars seem extravagant but not as surreal as this has turned out so far :3 I suppose that's what I'm after here as I think Midnight Diner was great for food and drama :)

Aha, I really must keep an eye on your threads, I keep missing them. Good to see you enjoyed it :)

Just finished ep6 - makes me wonder if Kantaro and the sweets princess will ever meet before the end of the story. Also could have done without the hammed-up foreigner Japanese that the mengaka's wife was speaking, but it unfortunately seems pretty standard in the dramas I've seen. Minor nag though, still enjoying this show plenty :)

Erased just came out on Netflix, anyone watching? I've only seen 2 episodes so far, but it seems very faithful from what I remember from the anime (I haven't read the manga).
