Does anybody know when that Entertainment update will come out?
If you're a dev and register to be a part of the program they say:
The capability will be rolled out to all interested parties in December 2017 together with the capability launch to our existing installed base.
But as a guy who signed up the day they announced it, I haven't heard anything from them this whole time.

I think they're really backing themselves into a corner with all this direct talk about "syncing media with the Hues." There are tons of articles written up that say directly "Philips' new update will allow you to sync your TV with your lights!" when the actual blog they posted (https://developers.meethue.com/entertainment-blog) doesn't say that.

As best as I can tell it just means they're releasing a parallel API that can use UDP instead of HTTP so it will theoretically reduce lag between updates. So all that really means is that existing apps could potentially be faster.

We'll see how it shakes out, maybe they've got their own dedicated HDMI splitter device or something they're gonna roll out, but it'd be nice to have ANY information whatsoever, especially as someone who is going to be utilizing this new API.

So I ended up picking up a half price SmartThings hub over Black Friday weekend from Amazon and a Sylvania Smart+ Dimmer switch and it's almost perfect for placing over a switch that's left on and controlling the lights.

The only thing I can't do through the SmartThings simple automation workflow is have the lights reset to 100% soft white when I hold the up button but for the basic functionality, I could install a lot of these.

Got my first bulbs set up. Was super easy. Set up my rooms in the Hue app, and also set up some groups in Alexa app so I can control it both ways. Also made my Hue account so I can control these remotely.

Unbelievably cool. Can't wait to really dig into this stuff and maybe write some custom stuff with their API.

I have five phillips hue white bulbs set up in my bedroom. Left lamp, right lamp, desk lamp, ceiling fan light, closet light. Combined with an iDevices smart switch that toggles my whitenoise maker it makes the perfect environment for going to sleep. It is routine now. Every time I want to go to bed I just tell my phone good night and I hop into my clean bed and listen to Siri to tell me goodnight.

Who needs anyone else when you have Siri and HomeKit? :D

I wish when you lost internet or power the bulbs would default to off. Defaulting to on at full brightness means well never put them in any bedrooms.

Same goes for echo - her saying 'HELLO' 12 inches from your ear at 3am in the morning is not an option

Losing internet doesn't make your lights come on. (Also good to know, Hue dimmer switches continue to work even if your home network is down, if the Hue hub still has power)

Lights do come on after a power cut, but that's very rare here. If you live somewhere with poor infrastructure it's worth keeping in mind.

I've had an Echo in my bedroom for a month and Alexa hasn't disturbed my sleep unless I've asked her to.

Doesn't Echo remember its volume level after a power down?

I bought a light strip, and I'm not even sure why.

Getting it mounted around the tv looks like it may be difficult

Just got a pack of these. Can't say I'm massively impressed with the brightness (9W richer colour bulbs), and I'm a little disappointed that the hub has to be wired in (I have no spare slots in my router right now).

I need to buy about 15 spotlights for my new house, and I'm tempted to see what the new LIFX bulbs are like before deciding which way I go.

Any suggestions for an app to do Christmas lights? We have a couple of lightstrps around the TV, and one along the top of the ceiling (our other bulbs are white). Would be good to have some gentle colour changing along with when we have the Christmas tree lights on

I would wait how the Entertainment Update turns out. Chance is pretty hight, that its not a real ambilight for all TV things and that the app and device producers have to update their things.

how do you get it around whole of the tv? I've seen some people mention 'corners' that would connect two strips. The lightstrip doesn't seem meant to twist or bend much.
In my videos, the strip isn't fully wrapped around the whole TV. The TV is 55'', and one Lightstrip Plus covers the left, top, and right sides, while the bottom is completely uncovered. You'll probably be able to cover the full area if you just get one Lightstrip Extension, sold by Philips.

Is it draped around th hooks at the corners too? Feels like it would kind of twist awkwardly and not look real uniform if I were to try that.

Thanks for the info btw, your video looked great

Yeah it's just kinda lazily draped. It's not 100% uniform but the way that the light is produced/bounces off the wall makes it not really necessary for it to be 100% neat and tidy.

Here you can get a rough idea of how they're laid out behind my TV:

Definitely plenty of room to tighten up this kind of setup to your liking. It's really easy to set it up.

I ordered the starter pack and set up everything as per the instructions, however I'm having an issue: whenever I turn off the lights via the app or with Siri, the lights turn themselves back on after a few seconds. I can dim the lights without any issues, but turning them off does not work unless I get up and hit the physical switch, which defeats the whole purpose.

Anyone have any idea what's happening here? I've reset the entire process to try and fix it, nothing works. Both lights are controlled by one physical switch, but I'm not sure why this would have any impact.

Just picked up a 3 bulb + hub starter kit tonight. Got a few things set up in the Hue app + HomeKit.

I'm in love... but clearly 3 bulbs is not enough, even for my meagre 1 bedroom apt.

Many of the light fixtures actually take 2 or 3 bulbs and look inadequate with only 1... and then you look at your remain dumblights and think "sad". I might return it and get a kit with more bulbs. This is a way of life.

I don't think I'm going to buy any more of the coloured sort until they release a brighter version. Might grab some whites though.

I have to be honest, unless you have the perfect lighting set-up, this really doesn't do that much if its anything like the Hue + Ambilight set-up. I used that maybe twice. The idea of your house colors changing along with the TV is fine, but in practice you just don't notice it (discounting the delay since the lights don't hard switch, but fade from one color to the next), since you're not looking at anything but the TV.

It might actually work better with a small TV, to be honest.

Can the white ambiance bulbs get brighter than the color?

Not really - both around 800 lumens, roughly equivalent to old 60w bulbs. There are a few different non-Hue LED bulbs out there that claim to be 1500 lumens (around 100w equivalent) but they are relatively recent, I think it will be a while before we see something similar in the Hue range.

I use Hue bulbs as the primary lighting in all my rooms, except the kitchen, and find they need 3 lights per room to proved achieve a good maximum level of brightness. I'm in the UK so room sizes are significantly smaller than the US average, I can see it being expensive/impractical to use Hue bulbs as the primary lighting in larger rooms - particularly if you have low levels of natural daylight.

I got a Hue color starter kit from Best Buy during BF which arrived in the mail yesterday. I'm completely sold on the technology and am currently trying to balance proper house lighting with the idea of bankruptcy.

I have a question for those who have the lightstrip. I'm currently in an apartment with a small bathroom. In the bathroom is a mirror with a nice gap between it and the ceiling that just screams "unnecessary $80 lightstrip". Would a lightstrip be bright enough to serve as a nightlight if someone wanted to do a 4am bathroom visit? I've read that it's not bright enough to light a whole room, but I wasn't sure if maybe it could at least light a small, windowless bathroom enough to be of some utility. Plus, the concept of disco showers is alluring.

It works great as a night light. I have an app for the lights (called "onSwitch") and it has a nightlight setting that I use every morning I wake up.

Does anyone know if Google home has the option to perform actions based on proximity by detecting your presence using your phones GPS like smartthings does?

It has some level of awareness. If I am in the bedroom and I say to the Home in the bedroom to "turn off this room's lights" it knows what to do. But it seems awkward to say what you need to say to get it to do that kind of thing right now. Hoping it improves over time. And no GPS yet as far as I can tell.

Yeah did some searching and ti appears that this is not yet a feature or if it will ever be added. Ordered a smartthings and hue hub with some bulbs, they are coming tomorrow, so excited.

Great combination.

I have mine do basic things but still helpful. Eg turning on the hallway lights when my wife or I arrive home (and it's after sunset). We also have a reed switch on the door so we switch the hallway light on when the door opens (and it's dark) for anyone coming in. Both cases the light fades off after 5 minutes.

The reed switch also lets us send a warning notification if the door is left open too long (our kids go to school after we've left the house, so it's a handy 'just in case' thing)

Ok I'm hooked but those individual bulb prices for the hue color ambiance are pretty crazy. It's literally cheaper buying another ambiance color hue kit right now ($140) then getting the bulbs separately. So what do am i going to do with the extra hub? Can probably give it to my brother since i can't think of anything else.

So a Hue white and color Ambiance bulb (E27), bought over a year ago with my starter pack, stopped working altogether. Just won't come on. Bought them from Apple Store online. Who do I contact now, Apple or Philips?

I had a white and colour lamp die on me, I contacted philips, they sent a courier to get it, I had a new one within 10 days (I live in france).
