Welcome my friends, from the iOS veterans, to those who have only taken their first bite from the finest cultivar you can get from Cupertino! I am your host Redhead On Moped, and this is the official thread for all things iPad Pro. We had a fairly active community in another time and another place, so I hope we can all help and learn from each other here too! Though it is no secret that I like some of Apple's hardware, I absolutely LOVE iPad Pro (specifically the 10.5 inch model). Though I have a desktop and an iPhone SE, iPad Pro is my main computing device and there's very little I don't use it for. Heck, this OT was made entirely on iPad Pro too! I know a lot about iOS, and in the past have shared my knowledge with the community, but this will be structured a little differently. There is a general Apple thread, but this is more iOS on tablet focused. While this is a community thread for everything and anything about Apple's Pro line of tablet computers, a lot of the info here can also be applied to iOS for other devices. Additionally, we'll be doing weekly App Of The Week posts where we showcase an app or extension that enhances the iOS experience on iPad Pro. We'll also be posting current deals and specials for iPad Pro hardware, apps, and accessories. Finally, we will have tutorials and tips on how to make the best use of the device.

iPad Pro is only in its second generation, and it just keeps getting better. There's much to love, and the honeymoon never ends!

Yoink: Improved Drag and Drop 2.99 USD

Ever since iOS 11 came out, I've been head-over-heels with how well drag and drop with the dock and files work. Problem is, sometimes you need some place to temporarily move and not just copy the files. Apple has always been a copy first fan in their OSes to avoid accidentally losing files, but we're big kids now. That's where Yoink comes in. Yoink allows you to drag text and files form any app or file system frontend and either have them act as copy or move by dragging into Yoink from app a, and then dragging from Yoink to app b. You choose wether the file is kept on Yoink or deleted after dragging to app B (aka a move instead of a copy!) This is great, and a great way to ensure you aren't bogging down your storage with duplicate files for no good reason. Best part is it even allows you to drag files the app itself can't open or recognize, so there's no BS "not compatible" application woes. It does one thing, and does it well. If you work with files on iPad Pro, it's an absolute must-buy, and deserves a space on your dock too!

ds0kurs.png

BGR is reporting that you can get a 10.5 incher at 150-200 USD off at Sam's Club on the 11th, depending on configuration. This means the 64 GB one will be 500 USD, and the popular 256 GB one will be 613 USD on that day!

If you just need something cheaper and what you really care for is a TrueTone display for like comic books, last year's A9-based (still solid) 9.7 incher is having a special promo at B&H with AppleInsider. With this deal, you can get a 128 GB 9.7 inch pro for just 500 USD. Not bad! These deals are good now, but I don't see an end date on the site. Good luck!

Remember, it's a community thread and we can all learn from each other, so share away. Maybe your favorite app is less-known and could be helpful! That's what this thread's all about.

So, what iPad Pro do y'all use? I have a 256 GB Wi-Fi only Silver & white 10.5 incher and an Apple Pencil. I use the official Smart Cover, this awesome rear cover, and this nifty lightning connector pencil holder when I use my pencil. I also use a Bluetooth keyboard, but the one I use is no longer being made, so I won't torture you all by praising it. It's one of the best mobile keyboards ever made, and it's sad that it is discontinued. :(

I got an iPad Pro for drawing. I sold my Wacom Intous Touch tablet. It was smaller, couldn't see what I was drawing on screen like the cintiq and it wasn't even wireless, unless I bought an extra adapter. The apple pencil and ipad pro is the pinnacle of creativity because it feels like a regular pen.

http://www.lindadong.com/blog//apple-pencil-vs-wacom-cintiq

and from iPad Pro review: Killer creative canvas with laptop-replacement dreams - Excerpts in spoiler:

I'll tell you right now who's going to want an iPad Pro: anyone who draws or works with images. Its killer app doesn't even come in the box. The Pencil, Apple's new stylus is sold separately, for $99, £79 or AU$165. It's specifically designed to work with the iPad Pro, and it blows away any other stylus I've ever used , even Microsoft's Surface Pen. It's fast, accurate, pressure-sensitive, comfortable, and for apps that support it, glorious.

Marc Mendell, an artist by trade, loved it right away. "This device was made for me," he said. "So sweet, it made my teeth hurt." While noting that it was "ultra precise and reactive to drawing actions,"

Even non-artists like me can appreciate it: it feels like a regular pen. I was able to write by hand and have it feel normal. The Pencil is far more accurate than the mushier capacitive styluses you're probably used to trying on an iPad. It's more like Samsung's S-Pen for its phones and tablets, or Microsoft's pen for Surface.

The magic part comes when you tilt the Pencil's tip to an angle: it can do shading like a real pencil. Any amount of off-angle tilt can do extra things depending on what an app allows. Pressure sensitivity, while it takes getting used to, is finely tuned. The combination make this feel like a physical art tool, rather than a piece of technology. "It took time, but I got used to what I referred to as the shock absorber -- how the nib reacts to contact with tablet," said Mendell. "It's responsive and recognizes the pressure well."

I loved doodling around with Pencil on as many apps as I could find to support it: Apple's Notes app, Procreate, Paper by 53, Adobe's new suite of iPad Pro-optimized tools and Evernote. My 7-year-old son picked it up and loved drawing with it too. He just treated it like one of his colored pencils in his art box. To him it was just a sketchpad. Lindsey Turrentine noted that her 9-year-old daughter immediately took to it and started making art in the Notes app. "She said, 'It's pretty good. I like it so much better than how you have to use your fingers in drawings. This pen really works; it's very accurate.'"

The Pencil pairs via Bluetooth, and also needs charging: a Lightning plug on the end lets you plug it into the Pro for a quick charge (20 minutes took it from 38 to 100 percent), or plug into a Lightning cable using an included adapter to charge separately. It gets 12 hours on a charge, but I've never drawn long enough at a clip to exhaust it.

They advertise the speakers like its revolutionary but its alright. Face-time on this big ass screen is cool especially since the iPad Pro is very light and thin. Battery life is better than the laptops and is good enough that you won't have to charge it more than once a day unless your doing something resource intensive like watching HD movies and Facetime so that 12 hours average is bs. On days I'm not doing that it actually does last that long. I own a space grey 128GB Wi-Fi only version and I've installed a lot of apps, games and downloaded my music playlists from Google Play Music. Still have lots of memory left.

Typing on the touchscreen keyboard is better than the touchscreen on the Surface Pro which I played with before choosing the iPad Pro. Browsing the web is fast, clean and some apps like Facebook and Amazon look better on it than they do on my laptop, and phones. However, some apps look shitty like Snapchat for example, because it's not fullscreen. With Infuse Pro, you can beam your movies and shows to Apple TV and Chromecast. My favorite drawing apps are procreate and amaziograph

I love my iPad Pro, and Procreate. Its basically all I ever use to do digital drawing. Yesterday I took it to a figure drawing session and it was one of my best sessions I've had. That being said I basically ONLY use it for drawing, so I am interested to see what other people use it for.

Hello,

I'm thinking about buying the 10.5 Pro but have some questions. I will be using the device for both personal and work. Personal will be the typical browsing, media, etc. I'm more concerned if it will fit my needs for work. I currently work on windows 10 laptop with dual monitors. Outlook is becoming a resource hog and making chrome/IE and Excel slow. I would like to use the ipad for responding and monitoring email and also for note taking. I have a lot of conference calls and currently take notes with pen and paper. After the call I send out recaps so I basically have to rewrite it in a email. Would I be able to easily take notes with ipad + apple pencil then convert the notes text which i can send out in outlook?

Or would i be better off with a Surface? I hate Windows 10 though....with a passion.

There's an app called Nebo that will convert your writing to text in real time, and an app called GoodNotes (which aside from being an amazing notebook app) has the ability to both search your handwriting and convert it to text should you choose (it's a conscious action you take, not automatic like Nebo)

So yes it's possible

Thank you, I have heard of these apps but was hoping for some impressions. Have you used it? Is the handwriting recognition good? Do you think the Ipad would fit my needs for work?

Also how well do keypads work for typing? Most of my emails are less than a paragraph so i'm not going to be typing up whole documents on it.

I have used them both yes! I mostly use GoodNotes since I'm in school and it's just great for lecture notes and the searching of handwriting is more important to me than converting the text, but in my experience it works very well. But because my priorities are lecture management instead of converting text (which I rarely do), Id have to recommend Nebo instead. It's super fast, there's a lot of Pencil gestures that keep you writing fast, the conversion is super accurate, etc. If your priority is "get in, write quickly, convert, and go" then Nebo is for you

As for keyboard, I just switched from the Logitech Smart Keyboard to the Apple Smart Keyboard because the Logitech one, while nice with function keys and backlights and stuff, is so heavy it makes the iPad thicker than a MacBook Air which defeats the purpose. I'm surprisingly happy with the Smart Keyboard given the limited angles, I thought I would hate it to be honest. Thought I would return it but I'm keeping it for sure. Any Bluetooth keyboard will also work, it's just the smart options that magnet on to the bottom instead of requiring a recharge and also serve as the case for the iPad

Been thinking about doing the same with my Logitech keyboard. I've been contemplating selling it off and trying the Apple one out.

Another ipad pro lover here, i'll definitely keep an eye for some apps in this thread. I've being mainly using it for drawing and sketching!! using clip studio paint a lot recently, feels very familiar and all your photoshop tools are available. I'm bouncing back and forth with procreate, but clippaint pencil set are just nailing the feel for me atm. I think they're still having a 6 month free try out! Is someone willing to try.

Slightly unrelated but, OP, could you not make the text black and just leave it to default? Reading this thread on DarkERA theme is pretty bad.

Picked one up and loving it coming from using my iPhone SE as my primary browser lol. Apple Pencil was sold out everywhere I went.

Any recommendations for a screen protector that feels good when drawing and writing?

I'm really tempted to sell my 13" MBP and pick up an iPad Pro instead. I mainly use my laptop for consumption; YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and the like, so I think I'd be happier with the iPad form factor and iOS 11... with one major exception, graphic design. I'm not a pro, but I plan on going back to uni at the end of the next year to (further) study graphic design. I'm quite fond of the idea of using an Apple Pencil in conjunction with Affinity Photo, and eventually Affinity Designer but I have no experience using it so it's hard to make a judgement whether it's right for me. Is anyone here using an iPad Pro as their daily driver or have any experience using the Affinity apps in a semi-pro environment? What's the iPad like when hooked up to an external display?

Hello guys! I have an 9.7 inches IPad Pro, mostly for productivity - I like to take notes with it. I have the office set and GoodNotes, which is my main app for reading and taking notes.

Right now, I have one of those cheap Chinese knock off of the Adonit Jot Pro for writing. It's better than a regular stylus, but I've been seeing the Apple Pencil. Would you recommend it for writing? I want to have a couple opinions before taking the plunge, because $99 isn't cheap.

The Apple Pencil truly is something else, I think you'd be blown away by the difference. If you have the ability, Apple sells them on their refurb store for $85, and those are essentially brand new

If you guys are in the market for the pencil grab it through Staples, they have $25 off $100 with Visa checkout, throw in a cheap box of pens for a buck and be on your way.

I noticed with the new Office update I can directly write on power points now.

Ugh, so tempted to buy myself an 12.7 inches iPad Pro and pencil for drawing. I can afford it, but not by much. I have a cintiq 13 hd and I use it all the time. So I don't need an iPad, but it looks like so much fun to draw on, and being able to just take it anywhere. The wise thing would probably be to wait a bit, but I kinda want it now.

I live in the middle of nowhere and there aren't any stores around where I can go and try it out either. Which might be good, as I guess I would probably buy it then.

I've noticed that my 10.5" iPad Pro will stop charging if I connect a keyboard to it via the smart connector while it's charging. If I unplug the cable and plug it in again it will start charging again. I have the Logitech keyboard case. Is this a known issue with that keyboard or should I be worried that something is wrong with my iPad?

Haha nice! Any apps you recommend? Could be games or productivity or utility etc.

Mine is mostly a school machine, all of my most used apps are like GoodNotes and iStudiezPro and my textbook app. If you do any high-level photo editing Affinity Pro is the bomb.

I don't know if you've had an iPad on iOS11 before but that's where the real shit is. Get used to multitasking and drag and drop

Hey guys, do you have any recommendations for wireless keyboards for the Ipad? My Pc's dying and I don't have money to replace it for the model I want, so I want to save up for it but use my Ipad for productivity in the mean time, and a physical keyboard is more comfortable.

The Apple Magic Keyboard looks nice. I want something that isn't a cover, since I was gifted a really nice leather case, and I don't want to change it.

Hey guys, any idea on what's a good note taking app that can convert your hand writing into text later on and easily?

I was looking at myNebo and Good Notes, which from my limited amount of resource says that both of them do that. Has anyone tried them out or can comment on an app they would recommend?

I use goodnotes and it is great for note taking. I don't use the convert feature much, but the app is quite dynamic and once you've converted the text you can search with no problem.
Plus you can have different folders and subfolders to manage your texts, and download them to your Pc or send them to the cloud in pdf format.
