Jeez, the way John just shat on Hellblade.. that attitude -> haven't played it myself either, just seemed .. real mean.

By god if they don't talk about how Steve is MVP in Season 2 I'mma be.. disappointed!
(and how the show was far too safe & not scary)
YES!
Spot on discussion.

Hadn't listened in a while but was really great to come back to on my commute home last night. I now feel far more informed about what happens if you get into a fender bender in Japan.

Just started getting into 8-4 (saw it on Giant Bomb) and have really been enjoying it! Glad there is a thread here for it!

Stranger Danger was such an enjoyable episode. I always love when y'all go into fun off-topics like McDonald's in Japan, China trips or, in this week's case, Stranger Things 2. Can't wait for John's full thoughts on Xenoblade 2! I'm about 6 hours in right now and I'm absolutely loving it!

LMAO @ Sarah's "Yeah Persona FIVE is so original" dig too. Definitely got where John was coming from since P5's UI is god tier but Cuphead is still far and way the best game in terms of art design this year.

So I can book mark this thread, and basically come here to discuss the episodes? No more individual threads for each episode? ( Was that ever a thing? New to ResetEra/Gaff )

Best show for Netflix, Japan, and Netflix's service in Japan! Y'all should have given JJ more time to discuss She's Gotta Have It. I'm enjoying that show now as well.

Episode header is boss. That Edo festival sounds cool and not nerdy at all.

Did they Mario Cereal news break after this was recorded? Legit curious to hear y'all's take.

Has anyone visited or moved to Japan as a result of enjoying 8-4 Play as a listener? I've been binging on episodes since discovery and have frequent urges to drop everything and price out a trip.

Not really into the TV talk. Semi-related, is there any way to put the time codes in the podcast text description, so I can see it in podcast app?

This week's episode reminded me I bought Xanadu Next months ago on sale and haven't touched it yet. Diablo x JRPG sounds so good!

Anyone know of any way to get this out of Hangouts and into the main forum?

Nice hearing about Xanadu next, it's one of those titles I've always been familiar with in name only but still had curiosity about. That transition into Ink Theory at the end was hilarious

I will move this thread to the main forum. Reason for that is that previously we didn't have an organized 8-4 community or a 8-4 megathread which means the thread shouldn't have been here in the first place.

The thread will return back to Hangouts at a later point, but for now it can be in the main forum

I went to Japan last month and everytime I saw something I was like "Hey this is the one they were talking about".

The reason 8-4 Play is the only podcast I follow now is because they're foreigners living in Japan, which means they have an insight of living in Japan as foreigners, which I thought was interesting. So yeah I really enjoyed all the McDonalds talk.

Yeah, I always enjoy the podcast the most when they just talk about random Japan things or about their work in the industry. They seem always to be somewhat confused that people enjoy these things, though. :)

JJ's "cool Internet forum meme kid" opinion on Skyrim is so stupid. Not everything needs to be Dark Souls.

I always enjoy these moments as well!

I mean, not everybody needs to like every popular game either. It is okay to not want to deal with jankiness too.

Saving the new episode for work next week. Just wanted to say I love the show, have been listening for years, and Mark nailed it about Stranger Things Season 2.

I agree with him. Elderscrolls, and Fallout games are ugly, broken, have bad combat, and aren't fun.

Besides that last part, that's fine. It's completey fine to state the things you don't like about the game (I definitely don't think it's perfect at all, although I do think it's better than the sum of its parts).

But to be a snarky, scoffy Gamer who shits on it by saying "the only good Skyrim is a meme Skyrim" is the epitome of forum elitist bullshit.

Agree with this 100%. Roll my eyes every time JJ talks about a western game he doesn't like, almost always boils down to 'it's complete garbage, people who like those games have no taste'.

Ha, not quite. I do like at least one googley-eyed Rare game though.

Flicking through the latest EDGE and there's a little interview with John! Pretty cool.

Okay so now I'm caught up with Stranger Things 2 and the last couple episodes of 8-4Play and they all sort of blur together so my feedback might be sorely out of date by now.

Sleep Gummies: I didn't catch the explanation of what's in those sleep-inducing gummies so I spent that entire segment assuming Sara was talking about THC gummies which made it way funnier. As it happens I'm currently running a large scale neuroimaging study on people like Sara, who either have a hard time getting to sleep or staying asleep, in the absence of secondary causes (like sleep apnea). I'll assume Sara has spent hours researching her sleep problems already so this it's not my intention of mansplaining here, but maybe for the kids, I always advise extreme caution when using sleep aids if you find you are relying on them more often than not. Often, even though the drugs help you enter sleep, the kind of sleep you get is less efficient, so people can still wake up tired or otherwise cognitively messed up. (The classic examples being Benzodiazepines, which causes the sleeper to spend less time in the deepest stages of sleep, which is when the brain performs all sorts of important self-cleaning stuff, as well as REM sleep where "we" dream, while our brain attempts to sort through all the information it has collected, strengthening important neural connections and loosening others, making our comprehension of the world around us more bearable.) Anyway I doubt those gummies actually contain benzodiazepines and are more likely a melatonergic agonist or something; which are generally not associated with withdrawal effects, though amazingly, the effects on objective sleep efficiency have not been well studied! The gold standard treatment for sleep problems, by the way, is cognitive behavioural therapy. It might be worth a shot and I'm sure your employer would be happy to compensate the 20 bucks for that book : P

Video Games: Ah, who cares.

The Podcast: I'm cool with the crew discussing "whatcha been consuming" when there's a lull in interesting games to talk about. Though I'd be super stoked if every once in awhile you guys took these opportunities to go back and revisit some interesting events or stories from Games Media's past. John and Mark alone likely have hundreds of hours worth of "war-stories" from the EGM days and everything since. Would love to hear some of the things you probably couldn't talk about back in the day. Did anyone else hear Jeff Gerstmann tell his story about the awkward silence with Mark Cerny while previewing Crash Bash? Hilarious.

Building a PC: About a year ago I invested in a gaming laptop and it's been thoroughly amazing. I feel like I was experiencing then what people are experiencing now with the Switch, where the idea of a console being permanently tethered to a TV is archaic. My GTX 1060 laptop was reasonably priced, plays most games better than what has been available on consoles so far, and at home I can plug it into a G-Sync monitor for buttery smoothness. I can easily throw it in my backpack with a couple xbox controllers when I visit my nephew so we can play co-op. I've even figured out how to "trick" airplane power outlets into allowing the heftier charge to pass through to the battery.

Obviously, if mark is aiming to build a god-PC for 8k gaming on a huge screen, he'll probably want to stick to a tower so maybe this is all useless info.

How did this post get so long? Jesus. Too many gummies I guess.

Keep 'em coming 8-4.

What? I have the opposite reaction. The reason 8-4Play is great is because they don't review games nor do they have any journalistic standards to adhere to, which means we actually get the honest emotional reactions that we all have but nobody wants to admit to, because somehow in the past decades the discussion of video games has become a topic to be treated with equal sensitivity to actual issues such as gender identity or racial inequality. I say leave the "unbiased", soulless analysis to "games journalists" and allow the 8-4Play cast to remain human. Please!

I know it sucks when someone shits on a game you like without backing up each and every detail of their argument, but I honestly find way more value in someone saying "I played it and it was fucking god awful and broken and I hated my life during the entire time and fuck everything about this game" as compared to "My enjoyment of this product was hindered by variable framerates and graphical clipping, while the skyboxes were delightful the last boss seemed artistically demure."

I prefer when game discussions tread closer to "friends in a pub jabbing at each other's sports teams" as opposed to everything being 'a fair and balanced discussion of the merits and shortcomings of Zoo Tycoon 8' or whatever.

Same. Opinions are pretty much just opinions and even the other podcast members are laughing it off. It's not that serious.
