So did you see gAGE?
I have seen it. In fact, it was the first Gundam series that I saw as it aired.
When it comes to Gundam I'm like Konata's father from Lucky Star. I would even watch Detective Gundam.

I like Gundam AGE enough and I don't share the disdain GundamEra has for it. It does have a long list of faults but there are, for my taste, far worse Gundam series.

Pros:
  • The first two openings had great music.
  • There are some interesting characters but with the exception of Woolf Enneacle and Asemu they seem to have a lot of wasted potential. I wanted Flit to go full genocide but his character seemed to be sanitized for the intended younger audience. Second part Zeheart is great but he turns into a moronic zealot in third. Arisa Gunhale deserved to be rememberd for more that slapping Asemu's ass.
  • There is a fair amount of grunt designs, which is good, but their design is a bit too simplistic.
  • I found the idea of the whole story being a family saga quite good.
  • Asemu's frustration for not being an X-rounder is interesting but It got annoying at times. Asemu becomes a better character for it.

Cons:
  • Mixing normal looking characters with dumb looking characters doesn't work for me (not even if you are Leiji Matsumoto).
  • Chasing a younger audience was a step in the wrong direction. Were they chasing the Danball Senki money?
  • The idea of some "magical" egg coming up with upgrades is laughable.
  • The whole thing about the monsters/aliens being actual humans doesn't seem that original (and I still hadn't seen Martian Successor Nadesico by then)
  • Martians seem to have some impressive tech to make the trip from Mars to Earth a trivial matter even for huge ships but for some reason their colony is stranded in Mars orbit. Never explained why.
  • Romary is a bland character with an even blander son. No wonder Asemu decided to bail to go pirating.
  • Kio is a Gary Stu whose only justification is "grandad put me in a sim when I was a kid". The annoying kind of pacifist, I'd prefer Banagher any day.
  • I am convinced, although I have no proof, that AGE killed the momentum of the MegaSize line that didn't recover until the release of the Unicorn to coincide with the new 1:1 statue. They should have released Mk-II and a non transformable Zeta. Not AGE 1 and AGE 2.
  • The beast motif for the Vagan suits, I do not find too hot.
  • The spoiler of AGE-1 can never be justified design-wise.

Best scene in the series: when Obright piloting a grunt knows he is done for but still impales Fram's MS with a beam saber and has one last thought about finally being reunited with Remi.

I'm halfway through Victory Gundam. It starts off pretty mediocre but I'm really enjoying it now. Victory's design grew on me too, especially when it's equipped with that beam cannon pack. Cronicle Asher is the shit too. However, why the fuck do the previews keep spoiling deaths? The last one straight up says "Next time, this chick dies and then Uso gets mad." There was no reason for that.

It happens every episode preview and in every episode title, they will consistently spoil you on what happens.
SPOILERS: Not to mention when a character that didn't matter at all for 30+ episodes suddenly gets three lines of characterization and an out-of-nowhere romantic relationship, guess what will happen to that character in the exact same episode.

And please tell us what you thought about THOSE scenes when you get to them, don't worry, you will know when you see them.

I pretty much agree with everything you said about AGE. It was not nearly as terrible as everyone made it out to be.

Also, almost all Gundam shows are pretty terrible if you think about it. But I still love it.

While some Gundam shows may be terrible, as Valkerion said earlier, one thing they almost always get right is that the worst people in the protagonists side are easily more despicable than the nice people in the antagonists.

The consistent moral greyness is something many other shows somehow cannot manage to pull off.

I'd rather have dinner with Gilboa Sant than Alberto Vist.

Can't wait for the info Wubby! This was a really tempting PG but I had to decline. Super curious about the LED's setup and why it increased the price so much~

Think 2018 will be my first PG... been leaning on Banshee unless something interesting drops.

Anyone seen this X-Base thing?
%E5%95%86%E5%93%81%E7%94%BB%E5%83%8F2.jpg

It's a wireless LED charging/powering base. It has a set of mini LED's that can be placed in various things and the base powers them on and off. Pretty cool and seen a few modelers here in Japan reviewing it. Looks cool!

So... I'm planning to get into Gunpla but it seems a little daunting of a task, I have a few questions.

How difficult is to build a HG model? Do I need to know how to paint?
I know I need side cutters, a hobby knife and sandpaper, but do I need anything else to make a decent looking model? For example, I want to build these two: the Zaku II and the Gundam Unit II from Stardust Memories.
What site is recommended for buying this kind of stuff (The models and tools)? I live in Brazil, so if someone knows how delivery from Japan works I would like to know.

Sorry, I looked up some sites that have guides for getting into it but I just felt a little overwhelmed looking at some of them, I would greatly appreciate if someone could give me a hand here. Thanks. :P

Building gunpla is generally much easier than it looks like before you've built one. Compared to other kind of plastic models like military or race vehicles, instructions are easy to follow, the fit of parts is great and rarely thera are steps where you can screw yourself.
Painting is absolutely not needed. Side cutters greatly recomended, I don't think sandpaper is adecuate if not painting. Cleaning nubs with a hobby knife looks cleaner than sandpaper if you are not painting or topcoating. Sandpaper leaves tons of microscratches that paint will cover but in my opinion look bad on raw plastic.

If you want to build a Zaku II I would recommend a newer kit. You'll enjoy the better engineering. The Zakus for The Origin seem to be great although I haven't built one yet. The REVIVE line for the HG also seems a good starting point but it doesn't have the MS you mentioned.

Thank you for the tips! Think I will go with this Zaku II from The Origin for my first build.
Now I'm off to see where I'm going to buy the side cutters, hobby knife and kit.
Once again thank you! :D

Tools, if available, it is better to buy locally and you'll avoid shipping costs.
Where I live in Europe, it's cheaper to import kits yourself than buy from local importers. It may be different in Brazil.
For reference, a 20€ kit or two 10€ kits typically cost me 10€ to ship.
As for shops to import from, I have only bought from HLJ and AmiAmi but their service has never disappointed me.

First and foremost, don't worry about building an HG as a beginner. Hell, I think I built my first HG when I was like, geez, five years old maybe? And that was back when I used to twist the parts off of the runners with my hands rather than using cutters *shudders*. You will definitely see better results than I did back then, especially considering all the technological strides Bandai has made with kit production since then.

Also, as someone who has built the Zaku II that you mentioned in your post fairly recently, I definitely think you'll be much better off building the Origin Zaku II that zEik recommended. Haven't built it myself, but the older Zaku II was kind of a pain to build compared to the more recent kits I've built.

Although I don't have any tips on where it's best to buy kits in Brazil as I live in the States, I can definitely recommend a great place to browse kits. An incredible resource that I like to use to see how a kit will look fresh out of the box isdalong.net. The site is run by a Korean Gunpla hobbyist who has built pretty much every kit that's come out since the late 90's. Although the reviews he's written are in Korean, he has so many pictures of all of the kits that you'll definitely know what you'll be getting into before you even crack the box open. He takes pictures of the box, manual, runners, and fully constructed kits in a multitude of poses. I can't recommend the website enough for someone who's just getting into the hobby.

One thing I forgot to mention is that, with the exception of special editions or kits with glossy finish like Hyaku Shiki or Titanium editions, with gunpla you usually get what you pay for. The Zaku II from the origin is about double the price of the old kit but the difference in quality will be noticeable.
If you like Stardust Memory, the High Grade "RGM-79C GM Type C" is easily the best bang for the buck in the series. A good looking grunt with excellent posability and a nice sheet of marking stickers (something most HG don't come with).

Good to hear, since HLJ has all that I need at a very good price, and the shipping costs are not nearly as bad as I thought they would be, it's still expensive, but 100 reais for 7 business day shipping is much better than expected...
Also, any thoughts on this side cutter, this hobby knife, and this cutting mat?

An incredible resource that I like to use to see how a kit will look fresh out of the box isdalong.net

Oh thank you, I'm already giving the Zaku II Type C pictures a look.
Definitely feeling more confident in going for it now. :D

All this talk of Stardust Memory just makes me want a GP02 Revive kit. Ughhhhh. My favorite Mobile Suit design ever hasn't been given an updated kit for eleven years. It pains me so.

If the option is available for Brazil and you have the patience (it takes about 3 weeks to get here), unregistered SAL small packet is cheap and has never failed me.
I don't know how reliable is the post office in Brazil, though.
As I said before, I don't see the benefit of buying tools from Japan if you can buy locally. Military model shops or art shops will probably have those and they should be be cheaper than shipping them.
The only comment about the tools is that I have an A3 cutting mat and I don't think I'd ever want an A4. YMMV and it depends on the space you'll have when building but a bigger work area is always a plus to me.

This is the side cutter I use and it's great. As for a hobby knife, I use an x-acto z-series with standard 11 blades. It's a good combo of cutting power and easy availability of blades.

Will give it a look.

This is really sad to hear, I have been binge watching Gundam in release order, I'm currently up to Wing, and so far the GP02 is also my favorite mobile suit design.

The thing is shipping costs are calculated by weight and cutters being made of metal get expensive to ship compared to kits that are voluminous but comparatively light.
I have a German side cutter that weighs a ton but it can cut plastic of any width.
Make sure you get cutters made for plastic like the ones linked. Those have a flat edge that give a good finish when cutting nubs but would be too fragile to cut anything else. Cutters meant for metal are stronger but do not have a flat edge and are inadequate.

I'm going to compare the overall price of buying it online and finding locally but the shipping cost didn't change that radically with the side cutters and hobby knife included, the only problem is the 4 - 6 weeks shipping on HLJ, that is a dealbreaker, probably going to buy locally just because of that.

Make sure you get cutters made for plastic like the ones linked.

I will keep that in mind.

Been going through the UC timeline shows chronologically

What a ride so far! I chose to skip Origins though.I heard it's meant to be watched after everything.

I've gone through:
MS IGLOO
Mobile Suit Gundam
8th MS Team
War In The Pocket
Thunderbolt S1 Movie
Stardust Memory

and finally about to finish Zeta. Now just to get through ZZ, CCA, Unicorn, F91, Victory.... and everything else lol

War in the Pocket is one of my favorite UC shows so far, I would say that it's worth watching, it's just six episodes long so even if you don't like it you won't have wasted that much time on it.

Is war in the pocket worth watching? I watched the first two episodes and quickly fell asleep.

It takes real balls to admit something so utterly shameful. But seriously, if you're looking for crazy Gundam action, 0083, 8th MS Team, etc. 0080 is Gundam on full "War looks cool, but it's actually hell." and thus is more of a slow drama than action oriented. There's action later, but yeah, it starts slow.

0080 starts off with an OVA-worthy mobile suit battle, as I recall. It should look even better once it arrives on Blu Ray outside of Japan. Some people just need to go to bed earlier.

I prefer release order to chronological, but that's me.
Original Gundam holds fairly well for a series made in 1979. And Zeta is an impressive step up.

The movies have the advantage of removing unneeded filler but I cannot agree with some of the changes. I'm looking at you valuable vase.

The fact that I don't even remember this fight probably indicates I should give it another chance.

And yup, I go to bed pretty late.

How about we compromise and say that everything in Stardust Memory needs an HGUC Revive, Real Grade, and a Ver. Ka? Sound good?

Real talk though, a GP02 Ver. Ka would be a fuckin' joy to build. Givin' me a case of the vapors just thinking about it.

Was that a forced cunnilingus scene? Did Uso just get molested?
