A New Mexico man applying for a marriage license in Washington, D.C., this month had his state driver's license rejected as a form of identification because a clerk and her supervisor believed New Mexico was a foreign country.

Gavin Clarkson, a Las Cruces, N.M., resident, said he was at the District of Columbia Marriage Bureau on Nov. 20 applying for a license to wed his then-fiancée when their nuptial plans hit a brief snag. The clerk told him he would need an international passport on the apparent belief that he wasn't a U.S. citizen.

"She thought New Mexico was a foreign country," he said of the clerk as quoted by the Las Cruces Sun-News. "All the couples behind us waiting in line were laughing."

Idk what to say here other than it's not the first time I've seen someone not know New Mexico is a US state and it just highlights how trash our school system is.

....embarrassing as hell this happened in DC, since TSA regularly denies District residents passage since they can't figure out what the District of Columbia means.

Growing up I got this a lot. You would think with AZ bordering NM, it wouldn't happen, but it was by elementary school kids mostly.... mostly.

I once met a girl from California who rooted against a team from New England because they weren't American. When I pointed out that all teams were american she said "Then why would they call them World Series" and I had no answer for that.

In that scenario, the country failed her.

I bought my car out of state and the dealership called and refused to mail my new car plates to NM, because they did not ship international...I ended up having the plates sent to my parents, who forwarded them on to me.

Oh man. If I got that call I would've never received my plates for calling them all a bunch of morons and so on

New Mexicans have been dealing with this for generations. Last I checked, it's the only state to have "USA" on their license plates, specifically because the problem is so prevelant.

They refused? Did you try to tell them? That shit would be unacceptable to me.

Yep, they called me on my way back home asking for a different address. I thought it was just a simple error and the paperwork just said Mexico, but after explaining to the phone rep 3 times that it was NEW Mexico and them still not understanding, I just gave up. It was honestly entertaining, like a gag from a stupid comedy.

I once had a TSA agent ask all her colleagues to come look when I traveled with a DC license. They had never seen one and thought it looked cool.

They should watch Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul to get acquainted with New Mexico, shit I'm not American and I know it's a state... wait they might probably think it's a foreign country because of all the hispanics in the show.

New Mexicans are now all considered Mexicans.

Congratulations, new Latinx.

Soon people are going to say the same of people from California.

Does this happen for New England too?

Edit: Though New England was a state since I heard of it often

I thought all U.S. drivers licenses and ID cards have "USA" on it somewhere, for example, here's a picture of what Maryland's ID and drivers license cards look like:
