It is actually pretty decent/normal year for Nintendo. People seem to still forget that Nintendo sandbagged a couple years worth of games to release for the Switch in 2017. You will most likely not see that output again for first party in one year again.

Problem is - I owned and supported Nintendo during the Wii U. The highlights from Nintendo this year are mostly ports. e.g. Capt. Toad. I already own them.

For an entire years worth of content, it's mediocre. First party sorely lacking in big AAA titles is the biggest issue.

I really didn't think it would be this bad, and 2019 isn't looking any better. Glad that 3DS picked up the slack.

Haven't bought a game since Xenoblade 2 ( was that this year ?) My son wants Pokemon though so I'll get him that for Xmas.

Not a great year for me

Incredibly poor Nintendo games year. Possible one of their worst ever. It has to be one of the worst reviewed years ever for Nintendo especially for original games.

Luckily third parties/indies saved the year to make it good.

I had a brilliant year honestly

Dragon Quest Builders was an amazing surprise and was one of my favourite examples of Switch's hybrid design. There are moments in that games that are best off played when just chilling on the sofa while multitasking and others that need your complete attention.

Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion, Donkey Kong Adventure and Torna the Golden Country weren't just expansions to some of the best games of last year but felt completely distinct from the base package. Torna and DK essentially had new battle systems.

Mario Tennis Aces was one of the most enjoyable games in the series and while I wish it had a bit more variety, the base mechanics were so solid and got 50 hours out of me

Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 1+2 ports were awesome, Tropical Freeze is one of the greatest games of all time and you really need to play it if you haven't.

Celeste likewise is also one of the best games I've ever played, it's such a clever platformer with a deep and meaningful message behind it. It's one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had.

Portable Dark Souls was a dream come true, I actually mocked up a screen on Dark Souls back when the Switch was first announced, got 50 hours of the Switch version despite playing around 200 of the original.

Pokemon Let's Go was way better than I expected, it does strip away components but it keeps the pure fun intact. Had a brilliant co-op experience with my fiancee and really hope elements like random encounters remain for Gen 8

Kirby was great, Mega Man 11 was awesome, Super Mario Party is the best game the series has put out in years, the Street Fighter Collection was freaking sweet, Dragon Ball FighterZ on a handheld is swell, Octopath Traveler was brilliant, really enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles 4, played and loved Hyper Light Drifter for the first time, Yoku's Island Express was a great gem, Wolfenstein 2 was way better than I expected and who can say no to Captain Toad on the go.

2018 didn't have the brand new heavy hitter first party titles like BotW, Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2 and Mario Kart 8 but there was still always something fantastic to play

Overall I feel like if you are someone who doesn't count third party games because they are on other systems, this would have been a mediocre year for you. If you only solely play exclusives same deal.

If you are willing to buy multiplats on Switch (or even just acknowledge them as part of the line up) then the year was pretty good. There was not as much good "exclusive" content this year but the overall amount of good content was a lot higher.

Stuff like Fortnight, Celeste, Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Crash Trilogy are the types of releases that help fill out a library.

Bought Kirby and Octopath. Will also buy Smash.

Pretty weak year for me, but I buy third party games on PS4/PC as they're cheaper.

Another year with an embarrassingly low/non-existent amount of games in demanded genres.

And after the lack of announcements this past E3 from third parties, I dont think the Switch will ever be able to stand on its own if you're a gamer that's interested in all experiences. The gaps aren't ever going to be filled now that we're getting into next gen transition mode.

Nintendo is my favorite platform holder and the Switch is probably my favorite video game hardware I've ever owned, but this year was the fuckin pits.

The only games that were 100% worth the money I paid were Hollow Knight, Into the Breach, and Celeste. Everything else, from DKCTF (which I'd played before but bought again on Switch) to Mario Tennis, to Kirby, to Mario Party, to Octopath, in one way or another made me regret the fact that I dropped 60 whole dollars on them.

I've never been more discouraged in buying Nintendo's B-tier titles than after this year. Before 2018 happened I would've dropped $60 easy on a new Mario Golf game. But seeing how they've handled their other B franchises, I'm going to be a lot more wary of my first-party purchases going forward.

Only Pokémon appeals to me this year in terms of first party games, and with SSBU I think it's the only major one. I downloaded some indies apart of that but to me it was an uneventful year compared to 2017, I spent all my time on the PS4. 2019 could be better I hope.

A lot of great stuff came out this year. Wasn't lacking options, love that Nintendo gets 3rd party stuff like Diablo and Civ, adore playing those on a portable. Pokémon and Smash are a great way to close the year.

Really bad for me personally. My son pretty much took over the switch this year and honestly I didn't miss it. The only game that interests me is octopath. I've already played the multiplat games on my ps4 so those don't mean much to me. Tennis, party, Pokemon and smash have no appeal to me. Hopefully next year is better.

It's been great for me, personally. I've barely touched my PS4 or XB1. Celeste, DK, Bayonetta, Hollow Knight, Octopath, Into The Breach, Dark Souls, Diablo, Civ 6 to name but a few have all been fab. Plus I am still playing Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart most days.

It's an objectively content and variety rich line up. I think it was far superior to last year, and I thought last year was great.

I have a backlog, then there's a bunch of games that I still haven't bought like Diablo, CIV, Taiko no Tatsujin and TWEWY simply because I have too much else to play and finish.

I personally don't get the droughts people talk about. This year has been great gaming wise, and much of that is attributed to the Switch. While big Nintendo titles were spread thin, we got a lot of great indie titles and a few ports that are enhanced by now being portable. That said, 2018 really confirmed the importance of portable gaming to me. It totally fits my lifestyle and being surprised like every month with titles I knew next to nothing about felt great. I hop 2019 will be just as great gaming wise.

Good for people who put a high value on portability or use the Switch as their primary platform. Pretty fucking bad if you bought a Switch as a secondary system for exclusives ... unless you're a Smash fan.

I bought 5 games in 5 months last year after getting a Switch in July. I've bought one this entire year, Hollow Knight.

No lie, this is exactly my year as well. I bought one Switch game, and that was Hollow Knight.

Only bought Pokemon, Taiko Tatsujin and Night in the Woods this year.

Night in the Woods had some technical issues which hampered my experience, wish I bought it on PC instead.

It always surprises me how limited some people's gaming tastes are. I've bought way too many games this year. Sure, some were disappointments, but I like trying new things and you'll never know if you'll like something until you try it for yourself.

I bought:

- Crash Bandicoot N'sane Trilogy (quite a terrible game IMO, don't know how this ever got so popular during the PS1 days)
- Wolfenstein II (great story, enjoyable gameplay)
- Celeste (one of the best 2D platformers I ever played)
- Hollow Knight (one of the best 2D Metroidvanias I ever played)
- Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (one of the best 2D platformers ever created)
- Captain Toad: Fun little game.
- Okami HD (decent Zelda-like game, not as good as Zelda however)
- Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu: I'm having more fun with it than I originally anticipated. A little bit unambitious however.
- The Messenger: fun game, I feel like it would be better however if it wasn't a Metroidvania game.
- Into the Breach (yet to play)
- Valkyria Chronicles 4 (yet to play)
- Octopath Traveller (yet to play)
- South Park: Stick of Truth (yet to play)
- Civilisation VI (yet to play)
- Velocity 2X (yet to play)
- Warframe (yet to play)

It's not as snappy as the PS1 games in general but on Switch there is bad input lag not found in the other versions. (sucks, definitely learned my lesson not to drunk buy games without digital foundry or vgtech etc analysis)

There were some solid and very welcome ports, but the first party stuff wasn't overly exciting aside from Pokémon and Smash. It was alright.

My Switch backlog keeps getting bigger so that's something I guess, lol.

Nintendo's output could've been better though but 2019 looks so amazing and Smash is next week so I'm satisfied.

Hollow Knight, Donkey Kong: TF, Bayonetta 2, Megaman 11 and a slew of arcade ports were the games I played on the Switch this year. For me, the line up for 2018 was super weak. There wasn't much out of their first party I was interested in.

I'm very hopeful for 2019 though. I think we'll start to see some great 1st and 3rd party stuff start to materialize.

Yeah it certainly depends on if you've played these games before. I play a healthy amount on PS4/Xbox One but obviously some games just fall through the gaps so a nice amount has been new to me. Also forgot to say Windjammers! One of the best competitive games you can get!

In the near future I'm probably lumping these last two months with 2019 for how spectacular it will be, but honestly I'm surprised at the 3rd parties that came out to play and how many of those I picked up this year.

Really, we couldn't have asked for a more solid follow up following 2017. Anything more would have been unrealistic or something would have suffered.

Octopath was okay. Mario Party was lazy. Got a YouTube player. Smash soon but not hyped.

That's it for me.

I bought nothing and to me so far this just feels like the Wii/Wii U all over again. For me personally the last great console as far as games from Nintendo was the Gamecube. I love the hardware design as a complimentary console to something like the PS4 or Xbox but for me it just doesn't stand up well on it's own in terms of capability and library.
I'm afraid it's going to be another Zelda/Smash only console all over again.

2018 had less and worse fist party games compared to 2017, but it wasn't a bad year IMO:

-Smash Ultimate will be my GOTY for sure, and the game I will play more during the next months.
-Torna and Octopath Traveller are the 2 best JRPGs from 2018 without a doubt (I don't consider Valkria 4 a JRPG).
-Bayo 2 and Tropical Freeze are two of the best games ever made, having the best version of the two games on the Switch is really good.

I hope 2019 is better, but I'd say that Switch had better exclusives than any other platform during 2018 (maybe PC...), especially thanks to Ultimate. This year has been good on 3rd party games for me.

Content bare new games, Wii U ports and games I can play elsewhere in a better form. This wouldn't be so bad if Nintendo's games were price accordingly to reflect their age or lack of content but as ever they want full price.

Awful year.

Ummmm, most of those games can be played elsewhere and often for much cheaper. Hell, the single game I did purchase I had already bought on PC.

Every bolded game in your list can be played elsewhere, which is where I played them. The 2 underlined games can also be played elsewhere, as in, on the Wii U, which is where I played them. So in other words, on your list, it's only 2 games that only can be played on the Switch. Octopath and Pokemon.
