That's not the same bag.
fallout-76-power-armor-edition-canvas-duffel-bag-nylon-controversy-fake-ads-bethesda-reddit.jpg

I get that it's more scandalous if you say, "Influencers got THE bag!" But influencers just got A bag. It's not a good look regardless, but this just seems like grabbing onto something to create today's "Bethesda just keeps giving!"

I don't know, seems like a shitty move to bait and switch the people who paid $200 for your collectors edition and say it was too expensive to make the bag but you've apparently enough money to do the following:

  • Book flights for influencers
  • Book hotels for influencers
  • Produce a Fallout backpack for them
  • Produce the other goods given to them
  • Fly your own employees out for the event
  • Covering every logistic not listed here
Influencers didn't just GET a higher quality bag, they were treated far more better than the people who spent $200 on their fucking game.

Bethesda Game Studios needs new leadership.

"due to an unavailability of materials" was the reason for the change to Nylon.
So despite being a different bag, that's kind of bad.

Do think Fallout/Bethesda hate is overblown, tho

I'm very much looking forward to reading the Bethesda Game Studios wikipedia page when I am old and dying. I imagine there will be a sub-heading titled "BGS Sudden Demise - FO76".

Event swag is not collectors edition stuff, and it's not even like the CE bag...

No but the point that is sticking out is that they said the canvas bag was too expensive to manufacture for the collector's edition, and they didn't announce that they changed the item to nylon, where here they gave put promotional canvas bags for free. It just looks bad. There's really nothing wrong with it though.

I just don't understand why ultimate editions since forever cheap out constantly. You have the opportunity to charge whatever to people for top tier stuff, but they cheap out. Like, people are here to give you the money why can't you meet them? They ponied up, but you ain't?

I got burned over 15 years ago on ultimate editions, so none oft his surprises me, but the logic behind it is just asinine.

I mean, that just looks like a Herschel bag. Are we sure they didn't just get a bunch of knockoffs and stuck some Fallout graphics on 'em?

All of those bullet points are all just part of the game's marketing budget. Now, that doesn't matter to the people who paid for one thing and got another, but we don't need to act like these things are connected when they're probably not. The screwup doesn't need to keep escalating, and trying to force a connection between a marketing swag bag and fulfilling customer orders just makes this look like a bunch of people who probably didn't buy the $200 edition using this as an excuse to yell at a company that made a bad game.

yeah, but the point of the bags are circular marketing

they are given to influencers so that they can show them off online and through social media, their fans see them rocking a bag and might be influenced into wanting one, and Bethesda is marketing a collectors edition that includes a fallout bag

at least, thats how it was suppose to work before this all blew up

Bethesda Game Studios needs new leadership.

They need sellers/shills/scammers to hype up the games so gullible gamers would preorder the game on the fake hype.

And in the end, it works.
There are millions of players that bought the game, and they can't refund the game back even if they tried.
It is a win-win situation for Bethesda.
They got the money.
They know that right now that the good will and reputation might be bad, but in the end, the gullible and naive fans will still buy their future games either way.
Why even care?

In my honest opinion, the CEO made the right call to get all those influencers flew in.
Die hard fans are die hard for a reason, they have no value so there is no point in catering to them since their retention rate is 200%.

This, also as someone on the last page pointed out the influencer bag wasn't even a specially made item, it's literally an existing canvas bag model with just the 76 logo slapped on. But nah let's create some more outrage when it makes zero sense in this context amirite.

Promoting the game gets a budget, which includes the bags for 'influencers', which probably isn't that many, and the CE gets its own budget, and there's a lot more CEs than there are influencers at that event. And it's a completely different bag.

Like, I feel Bethesda is just asking for a lawsuit with this whole Fallout 76 mess. This is straight up false advertising.

To everyone saying "that's not the same bag" ; Yes, but people buying the $200 collector's edition didn't get either of those. Including the one that was marketed to them.

Fuck Bethesda.

Is it just me that thinks it's wrong for "influencers" to receive goodies from the makers of a product they're supposed to be influencing on in the first place? I hate that kind of thing.

I'm just pointing out how a company says its too expensive to produce the items they advertised but apparently have enough money to do all of that for influencers. It doesn't matter if the marketing budget isn't connected to the budget of planning and producing a collectors edition, what does matter is that they knowingly did a bait and switch because someone higher up said no to producing what they advertised but allowed someone to sign off on producing a "fly influencers out and spend tons of feel good money on them and throw in some physical goods with it" event.

This literally tells people that Bethesda does not give a fuck about anyone who spent $200 on their game because the important people are the ones who freely advertise to their audience.

Who cares if it's not the same bag? Doesn't change the fact that these guys clearly got better quality shit for free over those who spent $200, who were also given a bullshit excuse as to why and were basically told "here's $5 fake money, now fuck off".

Naw youre not alone. But truth be told this is how these things go in every industry. Reviewers are invited to events, pampered and gifted. I've always despised it but it's largely accepted .

It's kinda like a socially acceptable way of bribing the media. Except in this case all of the influencers took their free shit and dipped.

But they said there was a shortage of canvas lol

But there are tariffs on cotton that went into effect in July. This almost certainly means that the cost and supply of cotton in China (where these bags would come from) is hurting. I don't get why this is the point of contention. There probably was a cost issue with the bags.

But who cares about the excuse? The only thing that should matter is that Bethesda didn't alert customers to the change.

Ah you wanted the canvas bag as advertised? We regret to inform you that this material is only reserved for our most elite walking, talking product billboards. Thank you for the 200 bucks, now, take your nylon bag you filthy peasent. Shoo, off you go.

It's not. But it's still infinitely better than what the people that paid $200 got.
Yeah this exactly. The cost of the gift bag and swag inside, which was given away for free, would have covered the cost of canvas for the $200 dollar special edition several times over.

Just shows that they would rather spend more money giving free stuff to important people for advertising, than fulfilling an obligation to the people paying top dollar for the actual product being advertised.

I know the money spent counts as marketing, but you know what else is marketing, the reviews of happy customers. Moreso even as you'd rather have killer reviews than killer previews. And that's the trade they decided to make.
