This is what happens when u make the players make theirs own fun. Would not be surprized if a similar type of video pops up from Red Dead Online.

Online game with no reporting, one of the most basic things to have... With all the issues with 76 I doubt anyone can take the title of Laziest Devs from BGS ever. They are not incompetent, they just don't care enough to even try to do things right.

Hey, the options were:
  1. Don't include a "report" button.
  2. Include a "report" button but it doesn't do anything.
  3. Include a "report" button and a human judges if the incident warrants taking action. Scratch this one, it costs money.
  4. Include a "report" button and an algorithm determines if the user has received multiple reports and takes action. Scratch this one, it takes effort.
  5. Include a report button that just automatically suspends whoever was reported.
The alternatives are much worse! :P

That's terrible, and unfortunately familiar. I had my hunch about Fallout 76 on this subject after the occasional abusive experiences with Sea of Thieves.

SoT doesn't have in-game report and it doesn't do a handshake with the "Recent Players" feature on the XBL system level consistently enough in my experience. So I encounter similar abusive/bigoted incidents like the above Fallout 76 videos, but am left scanning rushed "Record that" footage to see if I can even make out handles (cause it's easy to hurl toxicity/grief from out of sight) to then manually type out and search for them to then report, and I never really know if there's any sort of meaningful resolution even if XBL follows up with me letting me know they took some nebulous action. Taking evidence to support, official forums or Twitter as seen in OP (while impressive efficacy this time!) sounds exhausting.

It's a shame because Rare tries to foster a progressive, empathetic milieu (the Pirate Code, pride content), but the tools and/or moderation just aren't there for tangible effect from my pov.

I can report bigots inbetween rounds in games like Overwatch w/ good recent player UI without it wearing me down much (albeit, regardless of guaranteed results), but there's something about the challenge of reporting people in this type of game without good tools or clear resolution that I find defeating.

Welp. Fallout 76 working as intended.

"every character you see is a real person"

"running into a gang of raiders, those are real players."

The twitter responses aren't any better. Saying shit like it's to be expected it's online etc etc.

The fact that there's no basic report function for a game like this just shows how badly made it is and shows up the company for who they truly are.

I'm in two minds to ever support Bethesda for any game in the future if they are getting away with this kinda shit. Speaks volumes to the type of company it really is.

You can't mute people?
I know you don't have to be involved in PVP, just let them shoot you all day while you do other stuff.

How hard is it to add a report function into the chat system anyway?
Then again, I am asking if there is even a mute system...so I guess super hard for them.

Remember when Todd Howard said that the players will be the story of Fallout 76? Good times.

I also remember seeing people cheering for the no NPC statement part, and one guy was shaking his head in shocked and amazed because it was the most awesome statement he had ever heard coming from Todd.

Guess we are now just shaking our head at these fans gullible and naive nature.

Nasally mouth-breathers perpetuating that backwards-ass way of thinking. Shameful, but a consequence of zero regulation and the freedom of always-on mic chat.

That difficult to listen to for so many reasons. The really nasally guy came off as exceptionally thick-skulled, but then his buddies were laughing at his silly, ignorant jokes so there's that. Glad they were banned.

To be clear, the subject of the discussion centers around bigotory and harassment in a videogame yet your point of contention is said video game and not the bullying , am I reading this right?
Bigotory in online multiplayer game is no news. It happens everyday. No ingame report function and broken web report page though, that doesn't happen everyday. I'm most surprised by the most surprising part of the news.

Mind elaborating on this? Because right now it sounds like you're telling the people who are having to deal with a roaming group of homophobes without a reporting system to "quit complaining and get good".

No report function? Fucking lol what a mess this game is. It has been an embarrassment from every angle.

Edit: the incident in question is horrific, but them not knowing that this kind of thing might happen/providing a way to report people is incredible.
Felt the need to update this post.

A Bethesda dev at a design meeting for Fallout 76:

"I mean, yes I know that some people who play games are horrible, yes I know that bigotry is heavily entrenched in gaming, I.. well listen, if other people act up we can just make it so you do something crazy like nuke them! That's wacky like Fallout right? We'll get around to including a proper reporting system in the game at some point before we launch, I'm sure of it."

That's pretty awful. I'm glad Bethesda took appropriate action. Developers and publishers need to respond like this more and take steps to discourage and change this behavior. With how easy it is to get away with, it's unfortunately become an ingrained part of "gaming culture" where people just accept it even if they don't agree with it. This is why I play online games with all voice chat muted—other than friends.

A lot of responses in that Twitter thread are awful. The alt-right/gamergate/anti-SJW force is all up in there... the amount of likes they're getting is pretty gross too.

NathanTheHicc's YT Channel, for those interested.
Dude was also saying on Reddit that he doesn't see the big deal and doesn't understand why this would blow up.

He uploaded a video called "Cleansing The Gays" to his yt channel. In it, the people he killed had called his outfit cute or something like that. He said he doesn't fuck around with that gay shit then later came back with his friends to kill them.
Sounds like a teenager just after the voice break. Common enough to see homophobic sentiments from that age group, however it is not something others tolerate for good reasons. Roleplaying as fascist witchhunters of a sort, exterminating gay people, that is wrong and people should get told such and face consequences for it.

Ugly. I was thinking about maybe playing this with my daughter. PvP with proximity chat though, ugh. Maybe I'll just return that $35 copy to Amazon.

This is a troll incident and they should be banned of course.

But this incident aside, This issue will prove to be very tricky in this game going forward. Because the premise is to role-play a fkd up person in a post apocoliptic fkd up wastland, which is why NPCs don't exist, and some might want to role play the bad guys, like the slavers from past fallout games for example ? Or even Nazis.

Bathesda should define ingame where the line starts and ends. So players and specially kids can read it. Maybe have a paragraph at the start in tutorial and some sentences during loading as tips.

Siege's reporting system was basically broken for years after launch, and it turned out just fine.

Just kidding. It's got one of the most toxic, bigoted communities of any game. It's turned my favorite game into something I can only play if I have friends online. This shit will ruin a game faster than any bugs.

I can't watch the Twitter videos right now. But how did the homophobic group know which other players are gay to begin with?

Don't blame the game for bigoted behavior.
Im not blaming the game for bigoted behavior, i blame the game to not offer the players more tools to get fun with. Story missions, stuff like that. When thers nothing to do, you start seeing ppl being assholes more often.

Im already seeing weid behavior in Red Dead Online, not as bad as the one in the video cuz i usually stay away from other players, but im starting to notice when ppl have nothing to do they just become jerks towards other players.

I'm more shocked by the twitter comments. I expected a couple idiots to play the game, but I'm saddened that so many are defending them on twitter.

I thought there was an option to totally block out any annoying players in the server. I remember when I played the Beta, immediately some shithead started trolling right outside the vault. I remember just trying to mute him, but instead of muting there was a block option, and he completely disappeared, and I couldn't hear him anymore. I thought that was a really cool feature. Did they remove it?

I can't watch the Twitter videos right now. But how did the homophobic group know which other players are gay to begin with?

From the article:

In a follow-up interview with Eurogamer, AJ said the harassment began slightly earlier, when NathanTheHicc approached the group to ask for a Disease Cure item.

"The three of us were having a good time and talking to him and then one of us commented on his character or his characters outfit being cute. He replied, 'I don't fuck with that homo shit' and left."

10 minutes later, NathanTheHicc returned with friends to harass AJ and his group. Fallout 76's player versus player system employs an anti-griefing mechanic that means if you don't fight back, your attacker does negligible damage.

"The game notified me that if I didn't fight back, they would do limited damage so I didn't fight back and hoped they would just get bored and leave," AJ said. "They stuck with it and even joked about how 'this is the strongest queer I've ever seen'."

How could they not think a report player option in a multiplayer only game would be needed?

So, their two options are to fight, or deal with the assholes harassing them...

Right, because good people think "Hmmm I'm gonna be a major homophobe today. Y'know, for my fun escapist fantasy!"

Fuck that... It's a fucking videogame. These fuckers know they're interacting with other people.
