Part of Empire's new issue is a big feature and interview with Cameron.

https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/james-cameron-tom-cruise-almost-shot-film-space-together/

"I actually talked to [Cruise] about doing a space film in space, about 15 years ago," Cameron told Empire. "I had a contract with the Russians in 2000 to go to the International Space Station and shoot a high-end 3D documentary there. And I thought, 'Shit, man, we should just make a feature.' I said, 'Tom, you and I, we'll get two seats on the Soyuz, but somebody's gotta train us as engineers.' Tom said, 'No problem, I'll train as an engineer.' We had some ideas for the story, but it was still conceptual."

On The Abyss and True Lies blus:
"Man, it's on my to-do list," Cameron admitted. "It's a question of time-management. True Lies and The Abyss both have Blu-ray transfers that are complete for my review. The problem is the next 14 hours when I have to go back and trim the color and get each one perfect. That's 28 hours. I don't have 28 hours." He added that he's hoping to take a look at them before 2019 arrives: "I've put it on my list to try to get it done before the end of the year."

God, I was just telling my wife how The Abyss is one of the greatest sci-fi flicks ever and now I find out a blu-ray is in the cards. Excellent news.

I mean, I don't know if they'd really be able to qualify as fucking astronauts, or if it'd ever have been allowed, but the fact that they'd have been willing to become astronauts to make a movie is pretty cool.

I don't believe that the transfers are coming and even worse, they're just Blu-ray instead of 4K

Cameron actually did all the training required to fly to the ISS with the Russians back in the early 2000s. His launch was cancelled though.

Yeah but they discussed having to become engineers, presumably because they'd actually have to be useful up there doing actual astronaut shit.

True Lies & Abyss being in the pipeline has been a rumor for years. I'll believe it when I have Blu Ray disc in my hands.

I will believe it when I see it. True Lies blu ray lives only in my dreams.

Over eight fucking years ago...

In other news, during the Samsung launch event, James Cameron was asked about his future plans. Cameron confirmed that, apart from the 3D Titanic project, his other projects this year involved bringing The Abyss and True Lies to Blu-ray. That doesn't mean that both or any of those movies will be released during 2010, but at least work is going to begin on them this year.

Those movies have never been released on blu-ray?
Worse? True Lies only ever got a single DVD release, early in the format's life, that was atrocious and matte instead of anamorphic. I've heard that the Australan release has a better picture and is anamorphic (that might be the source for the HDTV version channels show), but I've never once seen it in person to judge.

What? 28 hours of work to release them? That's all?

Just get someone you trust to do it, watch the results, give notes.

It's possible the transfers he's talking about are recent ones Fox created in-house from the negative, though who knows.

True Lies also got a D-Theater release, which is a 1080sf24 transfer. It's roughly equivalent to an early Blu-ray release in quality (single layer MPEG2 BD, 5.1 DTS audio).

Unfortunately the best source for The Abyss is HD broadcasts. There's no high quality home release.

Same for The Abyss. The DVD is horrifying.
