Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP

The adventure game by Superbrothers and Capybara Games is out today on Switch eShop for $9.99 / £7.99
PR said:
Wander in the woods, solve strange puzzles & occasionally battle beasties as you seek to re-unite The Trigon Trifecta and complete The Scythian's woeful errand in this famicom fever dream. Conceived of as 'a record you can hang out in' S:S&S EP is built upon the moods of the moon as well as composer Jim Guthrie's mythic musical score.

TRAILER Switch:

TRAILER PC:

One of the early must-play titles on iPad that later got ported to PC, it features an incredible soundtrack by Jim Guthrie and beautiful, timeless pixelart.

They also removed the Twitter integration from the Switch version.

A modern indie classic, give it a shot if you missed out on the original release!

I love this game, and the OST is a permanent part of my work playlists :)

Highly recommended.

If you like adventure games at all, check it out. Sword & Sorcery lives somewhere in the Kentucky Route Zero realm of mysticism, mystery, and existentialism.

It's evocative, interesting, beautiful. The graphics and music are worth the price of entry alone. The gameplay isn't overly simple as games like Kentucky Route Zero are. It's interesting enough to keep you moving through the narrative.

At $10 it's more worth a purchase than something like Gorogoa.

This game is so, so good; the OST is really something else. Tempted to double dip... are there exclusive features for Switch, any new content?

I've never played this, but would like to. Seems like a perfect game to own on Switch. The disparity in pricing for games on consoles versus phones never ceases to boggle my mind though.

I believe it's a straight port minus the Twitter integration, they didn't mention new content.

Pretty excited to double dip myself, I haven't touched S&S since 2011 on iPad but I've listened to the soundtrack countless times since then.

edit:

Short impressions video: Portrait mode combat is out, physical controls instead of touch, slightly different UI, some remixed music tracks, there will also be an update for the iOS version

I played this back when it first launched on mobile. Is this pretty much the same thing or has a lot been added and/or changed since then?

Definitely!

I know Drinkbox is also in Toronto, but I wasn't aware of any others.

Here's some more Toronto devs on the Switch:

  • BOOTDISK REVOLUTION (Bleed, Bleed 2)
  • Castle Pixel (Blossom Tales [one dev in Toronto, one in Pittsburgh])
  • Reptoid Games (Fossil Hunters)
  • Vertex Pop (Graceful Explosion Machine, Super Crush KO)
  • Caged Element (GRIP)
  • Numizmatic (Light Fingers)
  • Asteroid Base (Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime)
  • Metanet Software (N++)
  • 13AM Games (Pirate Pop Plus, Runbow)
  • Drinkbox Studios (Severed, Guacamelee, Guacamelee 2)
  • Illumination Games (Skies of Fury DX)
  • Fractal Phase (Sky Rogue)
  • Ubisoft Toronto (Starlink: Battle for Atlas)
Canadian devs are killing it on the Switch. I should make a topic for discussion, at some point.

At launch, S&S was $5 on iOS, $8 on PC and it's now $10 on Switch. I think that's pretty fair if you factor in inflation, the price of other games on each platform and the cost of doing the port itself. It also came out on iPad when everyone was still figuring out how to price games on iOS, before the whole gambling mechanics BS took over. So I think it's hard to compare the price of an iPad game from 2011 with a Switch game released today. And imo, the OST alone is worth 10 bucks.

Will triple dip as soon as I can. Incredible game/experience.
Also, the soundtrack is one of the best ever recorded for a video game.

Please, buy this game e play it with a pair of good headphones.

Anyone can confirm that the game has been translated in other languages? The Switch store page suggest is now localized in italian, Spanish, German and French.

Yup, can confirm that's the case. Quickly tried it with English, German and Japanese. It's tied to your system language, no option to switch in game. Judging by the different logo on the start screen, the Japanese version could to be the slightly changed version that 8-4 Play did for the Japanese market.

I finished the first chapter a decade ago on my phone and the game recommended I take a break.

I never did return from that break...maybe its time?

One of my favorite mobile experiences. Got Jim to sign my vinyl at an Indie Game The Movie event!

How are the different control options on Switch?

Played it when I bought my first IPad about 7(?) years ago. I remember I being blown away because the game really felt like anything I ever played on a mobil device.

Highly recommend it, and the OST is really fantastic.

I talked to some of them back when Bit Bazaar was still going on. Hopefully they continue with it, because it was a great showcase for the indie community.

Thanks! Guess this time I will finish the game in Italian : )
I'm curious and scared at the same time, ahaha.

Played the first episode today. When the soundtrack kicks in and you start to move along with the music, S&S still feels like a magical experience after all these years.

How are the different control options on Switch?
The Switch version offers you three control options: buttons, touch and pointer controls.
three1vejk.jpg

Touch controls still work best for traversal imo, you zoom in and out with two finger pinch, double tap to have her move to a specific place or interact with the environments/people, tap and hold to have her move in the direction of your finger. You open and close the minimalist HUD via a tap on a small icon in the upper right corner.

The button controls work quite well. I imagine those controls are closer to the PC port. By default, you look around the screen with the left stick, move with the right stick, interact with A and initiate combat with B. During combat, you attack with A and block enemy attacks with B.

The game lets you switch some of the control settings. I switched the stick layout since I felt that moving with the left stick and looking around with the right one felt more natural to me.

I haven't tried pointer controls yet since I'm playing in handheld mode, I image they work best when playing on a TV.

The only difference I've spotted so far was this fun little dig at the monster that social media has turned into since 2011.

Awesome, thanks for the reply. I've never tried the game with a controller despite owning the PC version so I think I'll go with that. Seems like they did a great job with the port. I wonder if you can (potential puzzle solution spoiler)
mess with the Switch system clock for the Moon grotto...

First(?) review for the Switch version of S&S

Metro UK - 8/10
We remember very well when Sword & Sworcery first came out on iOS, back in 2011. At that point we, like many gamers, were beginning to despair at how much smartphone gaming was beginning to dominate discussion in the gaming world, despite having so few games of any real quality. Sword & Sworcery was one of the first to prove to us that great games were possible on a phone, and seven years later we're very happy to return to it.

Back in 2011 pixel art hadn't re-established itself quite as well as it has now, but Sword & Sworcery's exaggerated style still stands out even now.

The Switch version does have the option of using the touchscreen in handheld mode, but when docked you can also use a controller or have a Joy-Con act like a mouse pointer – essentially combining the smartphone and PC control systems together and letting you choose whichever you prefer.
You do feel you're experiencing Sword & Sworcery more than you're actually playing it, but with a game this engrossing the difference doesn't seem important. But there are some solid gameplay beats anyway, even if the main appeal is still the music and the graphics.

I always struggled to finish this game when I got it for the first time on my computer. Maybe playing it with a button layout will click with me better.

This game has a special place in my heart. The otherworldly atmosphere due to the beautifully stylized graphics and the phenomenal soundtrack is so singularly unique. This is the only game I bought a soundtrack on vinyl for. And i finished that game in its "natural" progression over the course of a month. It's a game that everybody should at least try.
