I think it's safe to say none of these games were received quite the way that their developers were hoping for.

But which one had it worst?

adding poll.

Definitely Mass Effect. The original trilogy are some of my favorite games ever. Such a shame to see EA toss the franchise to a BioWare B-team.

This seems awfully premature considering a game like Fallout 76 could see a significant turnaround, and also a lot of people are just going to vote for the game they personally didn't like regardless of larger context.

Gotta go with Battlefront 2.

The game that caused world governments to investigate video game monetization.

Fallout76 is the biggest one.

BF2 fuck up was all about the monetization
NMS was for a lack of content and misleading trailers
Andromeda was for a buggy and uninspired title

Fallout76 is just wrong.

Battlefront 2 had governments getting involved so I think that goes above and beyond a game simply being bad.

For me is mass effect A, the last game was already the biggest PR disaster last gen for me, so there is two in the roll, unbelievable.

It's just so weird that games can't just be bad. They always turn into disasters.

As a game it's Fallout 76. There is no rhyme or reason for a triple A studio to churn out a product so broken at its core. That said, Mass Effect Andromeda basically wrecked a company so its effects are more felt.

While NMS underdelivered, it was still made by a indie team, while the other games was made by some of the largest gaming companies in the world.

Not really fair.

Biggest outrage in my opinion was definitely NMS, but that game mad a u-turn is quite good already and keeps going.

Haven't heard of Bethesda devs receiving death threats (yet), so I'm gonna say No Man's Sky takes the prize here.

How anyone could say anything other than Battlefront is baffling.

It got Disney involved. It got governments involved.

It was a disaster in every single sense of the word.

I feel relative to expectations Fallout will probably sell the least (I expect they wanted to shift millions) and the initial reaction was fairly similar to Andromeda so I voted for 76.

BF2, they went too far with the $ things.
Fallout76 is almost no different from other Bethesda games, now its just on MP side that makes it worse.

ehh it had Sony's full backing and marketing hype and was sold for $60; expectations were justifiably high.

Gotta go with the Star Wars game. Thanks to that though, developers have now been scared how they implement lootboxes and microtransactions. Love it

Didn't no mans sky recover?

It did and continues to grow. Just in the past six months there have been 3 significant content updates (and free too). No Man's Sky is great right now an one of the most unique games I've ever seen. We're at version 1.76 and I can't wait what they have in store for 2.0.

I have to go with Battlefront 2, however for other reasons. I still play it from time to time, but to me there's something fundamentally wrong with how weapons, aiming and shooting works. I've played my share of competitive FPS games, but Battlefront 2 is the only one where I still have trouble simply hitting enemies.

I'm going Star Wars Battlefront 2. EA's implementation of loot boxes was insidious and the success and acceptance of that game would have been a disaster for the industry. The backlash getting the game reworked at the last minute, the 'pride and accomplishment' post and Disney getting involved to calm the storm, it was a shit show. You could argue that the controversy surrounding The Last Jedi created a perfect storm too.

I might be wrong because I don't follow Battefront 2, but it might also be the only game in that list with continued support, substantial updates and without MTX - 2 years later.

While Battlefront 2 still does get the occasional updates I think they've only added like 2 or 3 maps since launch. NMS has completely overhauled the whole game and essentially started from scratch. I've never seen a game make such a drastic change other than maybe FFXIV if that counts.

Anyway, I've gotta go with Battlefront 2. And I say this as someone who picked it up back in June and enjoyed the heck out of it! It's solid now, and fun and gorgeous and full of style.

And none of that matters in this context. The microtransaction scheme at launch has shifted the entire industry. That's just insane.

Andromeda's release was a disaster in the way that it was a great game that got destroyed by the public due to some poor animations (which had always been present in the series), to the point that it killed the franchise.

Battlefront 2 was a disaster in the way that it was very disappointing considering it was the only Star Wars game in a long time and was just a fancy slot machine.

It has to be Battlefront 2 - their mistakes lead to an industry wide shift. Along with coverage in mainstream news such as BBC. You can't get much bigger than that.

The current poll leader Fallout 76 doesn't even come close, despite the fresh hate online it's still got a decent number of players and it's such early days.

I feel like people are voting for F76 because it was the most recent one, Battlefront 2 was a huge controversy that even my friends who aren't into Star Wars nor gaming knew about it.

Easily Andromeda. Killed a studio and probably a franchise.

NMS is apparently a pretty good game now. Battlefront 2 is still getting content and will likely continue as a franchise. 76 will undoubtedly be improved upon as time passes and I'd be surprised if fans didn't still get excited when Bethesda inevitably announces a Fallout 5 down the line.

holy shit, I totally forgot about FFXIV. One of the biggest fuck ups I've ever seen. I bought the collectors edition 2 days after launch at 12€ and it was still overpriced. That game was complete garbage. Nothing was working. I still remember how I had to run from city to city, because there was no quick travel between them in any shape or form. Not even the rentable chocobos.

Mass Effect imo. It didn't even get proper outrage, it just released with as much excitement as a wet fart, and now ME is probably dead. Really friggin sad, because the game was not terrible just mediocre, and ME was probably my favorite new IP last gen :(.

Anthem better not suck, or else I'll lose all hope for Bioware who used to be one of my favorite studios in their heyday.

NMS has been getting consistently better overtime to the point I think that they've redeemed themselves from total disaster to be a divisive niche space game (which is where they should have been from the start if they didn't go way too wild with marketing). Also I personally liked the game from the start, but I'm a sucker for the aesthetic and that's all I really bought it for.

Battlefront 2 was mediocre, but seems like it has been very financially successful. I have no interest in it, but I never perceived its mixed reception as a huge failure, and tbh it didn't seem like the controversy hurt sales alll that much.

FO76 looked like hot trash from the outset and might be the game that looks like the worst quality of all the four to me, but it seems like a pretty obvious quick cash grab to hold Bethesda over until next gen. We'll see if there's any real damage whenever Starfield and TES are revealed.

If we're talking about launch or the vanilla versions of these games, I'd be more aligned with saying Fallout 76 or Star Wars Battlefront 2.

No Man's Sky was able to recover with the recent Xbox port and the content updates that it's getting for the past months. Battlefront 2 has also been getting some decent updates.

Battlefront 2 was plagued by aggressive monetization so I kinda feel it doesn't fully belong with the others (products that failed to deliver on promises).

I geuss that the worst is FallOut 76 by miles.

BF2 got governments involved and might be the lynchpin in either ending or majorly regulating a popular way games are monitized.

Y'all picking Fallout 76 are either out of your damn minds or have no long term memory to speak of.

I don't really think Mass Effect belongs there. It's not a great game, but the worst thing about is that it's bland.

Star Wars reaction iirc affected like stock prices and is likely to have affected the fate of monetization across the industry, and NMS and Fallout had fans threatening pathetic lawsuits.

NMS was upright deceptive about its nonexistent multiplayer, but at least they are still tweaking it 2 years after launch.

Underworld Ascendant, in terms of living up to a legacy, is the greatest offender in my eyes.

Besides that I was never terribly interested in any of these franchises, so I don't really know. But out of those NMS is the only one I'd want to play, now.

Battlefront 2 is great, and it's core was always great.

No Man's Sky wasn't what they claimed but still functional and arguably enjoyable for a bit, and they've been amazing about support since day 1.

Andromeda was always just aggressively mediocre, and the vitriol surrounding it was contrived at best.

Fallout 76 is a fucking raging dumpster fire that Bethesda can't even be bothered to halfheartedly piss on nearly two weeks from release. They couldn't even be fucked to properly compensate those who spent $200 on a faslsely advertised special edition. Absolutely the worst game of this generation.

Andromenda killed a prospective trilogy AND the franchise. Regardless of how bad Battlefront or Fallout 76 are, we're definitely getting new games in both franchises.

Gotta go with Battlefront 2.

The game that caused world governments to investigate video game monetization.

Can we really call that a "disaster" when it scared developers and publishers into taking lootboxes out of their games (Shadow of War) or it now being a positive PR move announcing a game doesn't have lootboxes.

I'm going to have to go with Fallout 76 (pending) even though Mass Effect shuttered a studio it was EA, a matter of when not if and it was a core functioning game, F76 is a copy and paste job from Fallout 4 with no forethought in making it suitable for the game that it tried to be, and the reason I'm putting in pending is because Bethsada destroyed so much goodwill that I think any bugs in their future single player games will now be scrutinised instead of endeared even if it launches as buggy as Skyrim first did.
