More specific than "Ancient China."

People have been begging for Assassin's Creed: China for a while not but everyone always just says "China" or "Ancient China" when as far as I know that encompasses like 3000 years of history.

I know almost jack shit about Chinese history, so I'm hoping an expert can come in here and toss in some suggestions. Again, I'm not just talking about Creed, but really any open-world game (let's face it, Creed is pretty similar to the rest of them) in the vein of Creed, a Rockstar game, a Bethesda game, a Sony game, or whatever. You know the general formula. If there's a specific region that fits best too, by all means suggest it.

I know one of the most famous periods is the "Three Kingdoms" period immediately after the fall of the Han dynasty in like the 3rd century CE but what else is there? Wasn't there some kind of huge war that happened in the 10th century or something? Mongol conquest? Medieval conflicts between China and southeast Asian kingdoms?

Maybe Qing Dynasty in Forbidden City as it features a lot of internal political struggle and countless fight for the throne among the princes.

The Three Kingdoms. Easy answer, known enough that people will be interested, but perhaps not enough that they'll feel bored of it.

EDIT: Oh, you don't want that? Probably colonial Hong Kong then.

The period when Sun Tsu wrote The Art of War is a very fascinating period in ancient Chinese history as that period obviously involves alot of war and assassinations among the war lords.

I want a game that explores Chinese mythology. A Monkey King game a la God of War with the set pieces and story could be Game of The Forever for me.

Modern day and they do an entire storyline about being dragged off into prison camps for differences in beliefs and opinions and you must escape or be "reeducated"

With how AC play, no reason it could be that and a past era, though knowing how Ubisoft likes those Chinese Yuan, probably not.

If Ubisoft keeps making AC as good as Origins and Odyssey they can set the next game in Eugene Oregon and I'd buy it.

But seriously, I would love to see a modern AC in something like Hong Kong. Talk about your vertical surfaces.....maybe something in the 80's or some shit. Would be cool if you ask me.

Sui-Tang or Chu-Han honestly are better suited than Three Kingdoms. The impact from those times are more long lasting and set up golden ages of China subsequently. The conflicts are also relatively short, just a generation or two, while Three Kingdoms is like 4 generation of conflicts. The lores from the periods are supremely epic.

Chu-Han - Qin empire was destroyed. A commoner rose to become one of the major factions, fought against another faction led by an invincible general to create Han national identity.

Sui-Tang - A prince from clan rebelled against a corrupt emperor, unified China, fought his own brother for the throne, became the most celebrated emperor in Chinese history.

If it's Chu-Han, you also get a very convenient set-up to the reign of Empress Lu, who is comically evil ,and the downfall of her clan later for the sequel.

If it's Sui-Tang, you get a set-up for the reign of Wu Zetian, a most brilliant and only female emperor in Chinese history.

Both are shockful of polical intrigue.

That's funny because that's kind of what they did with Far Cry 5, though if the rumors are to be believed, they're returning to exotic locales with the next one in Cuba.

I think it'd be awesome if, after the Empire trilogy is over with an AC:Empire in Rome, they did a trilogy of Asian cities (maybe with actually having the same characters this time?), with China, Japan, and... somewhere in Russia? The Philippines? No idea. Like you, though, OP, I don't know enough about the history to place these in a specific era. Romance of the 3 Kingdoms seems like a safe bet, but I cheated in World History enough to have no idea what else was happening in Asia during that time period.

I mean there's already an Assassin's Creed game set during the Ming Dynasty during the Prince of Anhua rebellion so...

As someone who lives in Oregon...I wouldn't be opposed to that.

Rise of Qin dynasty (Qin Shi Huang), fall of Qing dynasty, or fall of Ming dynasty/early Qing dynasty would be the most interesting I think. Forbidden City seems to be the only locale people would know and fit an AC game.

Three Kingdom...please just no. Overexposed with zero political intrigue (since it's always based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms). Just stick with Dynasty Warriors if you want your fix.

If they want to keep the systems developed in Odyssey, then the answer will be Three Kingdoms. And it'd be pretty glorious, too. That's been done a lot, but never with the attention and high production values of an Assassin's Creed, to my knowledge.

4000+ years of history since the first dynasty and people in this thread just want the 1900s lol

The 1900s is an interesting century for the country though, it's just funny to me

Would it be interesting to see the fall of China to the Khans? It could offer a really rare perspective on how horrific some of those events truly were.

I'd be happy with almost any period, but early 1900s Shanghai is one of the most fascinating periods and places that's barely ever recreated in the west. Whore of the Orient could've been what i wanted, but alas.

That could be interesting, yeah. I'd also love to see AC visit a setting similar to Saboteur but I'm not sure that's a direction they wanna take. Then again, they are probably done with the ancient era after Rome so who knows.

They'll probably go medieval Europe after Rome. Or maybe Nordic/Viking. Maybe South/Central America during the Discoveries, which could be pretty cool or a complete shitshow. They seem to be determined to never leave the western hemisphere with the main series, unfortunately.

Also been done, in the comics.

Heh it's cool if you like that sort of stuff but i don't really care about comics or even game novels. It's pretty much as if they didn't exist for me. I don't play AC for the story either, but for the worlds i get to explore. Can't do that without the game :/

The Taiping Rebellion. Guy fails imperial examinations several times. Loses his fucking mind and proclaims himself the brother of Jesus Christ. His faction expands to 30m people and goes to war with the rest of China. 30-100m dead (lowest and highest estimate), making it one of the bloodiest conflicts of all time (~3rd).

So 1851-1864.

The Seven warring states then.

Start with the unification of all of China under one Emperor.

Yup, this. Ubi would want to stick to the BC period of history where they can play fast and loose with the facts and mythology.

This is also one of the most famous periods of Chinese history that hasn't been featured much in (western) gaming, from the 7 kingdoms to the unification of China and formation of the Qin Dynasty, and featuring the most famous figure in the whole of ancient Chinese history, Qin Shi Huangdi. Who died from poisoning, incidentally.

Unfortunately many Western devs have turned down pitches for a AAA open world game set in China due to the lack of appeal for that setting. (I'm excluding HK)

It's mainly Asian companies creating MMO's, Strategy or Simulation games with an Ancient China setting.

Maybe during the Great Leap Forward, or the Cultural Revolution... or an ending in Tiananman Square? They probably wouldn't want to piss off China, but it could be seriously educational. A lot of younger Chinese know nothing about it.

If appeal is referring to sales potential, I may agree with it. It is apparent that most people don't know much about ancient China other than Chinese. Meanwhile, I do think it is an unexplored goldmine to many developers, either from the west or east. There are too many interesting things in Chinese history that could make into a great Assassin's Creed game, eg. assassinations, political ideologies and conspiracy, warfare, coup d'etat etc.

On the other hand, I imagine it is very difficult to handle China as a subject. Too many researches have to be done for an open world game: architecture, drawings, clothing etc. I have not played Origins yet, but it seems that to be a good illustration of ancient Egypt according to some articles I have read. So Ubisoft should be able to pull it off without much trouble.
