Cool.

Well it really depends on the output of games that they will have, it relies on 3rd party support more than anything at this point in time. It's also no necessary to have it launch with next-generation of consoles.

I think the "Beginning of the Year Update" on Xbox Wire will have more info drops. XGP going to PC announcement being there makes more sense. I figure there will still be more information though.

I was more thinking about the user experience. You can't launch Game Pass on PC with the store in its current state, how long will that take to fix? It's not an overnight job anyway.

They aren't going to rush it out the door and imo it makes sense to capitalise on the momentum of a console launch, that's not to say they don't keep talking about it until then though.

According to Matt. Take-two owns publishing rights to the first and first rights to sequels.
This may be true, but if MS arent going to see benefit from owning Obsidian for the next decade then they'll just let them work on a new IP they fully own and control. I suspect a deal will be come to at some point
What Steverulez said.

The first game hasn't even been officially revealed yet. A lot of things could happen between now and whenever they decide to make a sequel.

I hope a deal is reached. I'm sure Microsoft thought this through when they acquired them so I'm sure everything will turn out great:

I disagree, sorry.

Gold is essential for anyone wanting to play games online. Which is a lot of people when you think of everything from Fortnite to FIFA to CoD.

Game Pass is merely a 'nice to have' in comparison.

Remember, unlike Netflix, Game Pass does not have any exclusive content whatsoever. You can buy FH4 without needing to subscribe to Game Pass - as many have. And I think that will stop it from growing at those kinds of trajectories.

And I don't think that will change, with Phil repeatedly saying Game Pass is seen as an 'option' - so I don't expect future first party games will end up Game Pass exclusive.

If, however, Halo Infinite was Game Pass exclusive - then I can only imagine how the subscriptions would skyrocket in to oblivion. But it doesn't appear to be their strategy.

Game Pass Exclusive is an interesting idea.

If they really want Game Pass to be their Netflix then I don't think people are fully appreciating what this could mean. For a number of years when Netflix launched there was more acquired content than Netflix originals but as more competing platforms came on the scene they realised they would have to go all in on making there own exclusive content. This year they are slated to spend around $8.5 billion on producing original exclusive content for there platform, now imagine Xbox found itself in the same position?

Don't jizz in your pants to quickly, they aren't going to start spending that kind of money next year but in five years time?

What was it someone said to Jez Corden?

We're just getting started or something?

Oh boy.....

What is a bigger audience, people who play games, or people who play games online?
What is easier to sell to a user..."Hey, play over 100 games for $10" or "Hey, play online for $7 for games you've bought"?
I understand that some games on Game Pass are online games but majority of them are played offline or have an single player component to them.

Game Pass value is being driven differently than XBL. XBL only appeals to multiplayer gamers. Game Pass can appeal to all gamers and will cast a wider net. I think Zedox is right on this one.

I understand the user experience but at the end of the day you need to have games on the service for people to even deal with a service that is revamped. So 3rd parties will always mean more.

There's no reason to have a game pass exclusive. Could there be? Yes, but Microsoft is about giving users choice on how to make their library (subcription, physical, digital) and that would go against that. Still a possibility.

I was thinking about how long will it be for us to see games from inXile or Obsidian arriving on Xbox and realized we tend to get centered on new games only, but actually there's quite a few games we can get before any new project gets finished

Bard's Tale IV and Path of Exile 2 are the most obvious as they are already released on PC and I may be wrong, but porting a game from PC, specially now that K&M support is a thing shouldn't take too long
Then there's the remaster of the first 3 Bard's Tales that's already released on PC too and the remake of the first Wasteland that inXile has been reportedly working on and it's expected to release early 2019
If any (or hopefully some/all) are coming to Xbox, it's not too far off, so an announcement at TGA would make sense if they're early 2019
Microsoft needs to be careful and box the fuck out like a power forward in the paint. They have a history of being very inventive only to see another company run with the idea and make it a huge success. Another company that's not incumbered by the corporate fuckery and that is devoted to that one single idea. I have high hopes right now because gaming sits right under the CEO and Phil is in charge.

If Microsoft goes full Microsoft however they will risk Valve, Google, or hell, even Netflix themselves coming into this space throwing checks around and taking over. That's why you have big check books right now to buy content and content creators - to make it unappealing to be left out of this ecosystem.
I found it fun that you said Netflix too, as it seems they are interested in games.
Minecraft Story mode will be available to stream soon and it seems is the same game available anywhere else just a little simplified (only 2 options to choose in dialogs for example) so it's playable with a TV remote controller

Difference is, Game Pass coming to PC and xCloud makes it so potential audience is not only Xbox owners, it's way bigger.
Gold is a must to play multiplayer only on Xbox because it's how it is, no other way around.
Trying to put Gold in other platforms would be impossible as it'll just be ignored
Don't know how many of you are familiar with Ice Pick Lodge but it seems they are struggling financially since they recently announced Pathologic 2 will have to be released episodically to be feasible. They are a studio that makes games that are basically a niche of a niche but they pretty much have exclusively made games that make me say "yeah there's nothing else like this". What would you all think of them being an acquisition? IPL would no doubt never be acquired unless they were guarenteed complete creative freedom, so if what NT and others have said I see it as a possibility if MS is aware of them.
I'm not familiar at all, but as long as it's not an either/or situation where it's either them or let's say Aurora44 then I'd rather choose the later

Nice.

Whens GDC btw? Also, whats DirectML?

Google man.

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/directx/2018/03/19/gaming-with-windows-ml/

DirectML

DirectX Raytracing benefits not only from advances in hardware becoming more general-purpose, but also from advances in software.

In addition to the progress we've made with DirectX Raytracing, we recently announced a new public API, DirectML, which will allow game developers to integrate inferencing into their games with a low-level API. To hear more about this technology, releasing in Spring 2019, check out our SIGGRAPH talk.

ML techniques such as denoising and super-resolution will allow hardware to achieve impressive raytraced effects with fewer rays per pixel. We expect DirectML to play a large role in making raytracing more mainstream.

Wasteland 2 is cool but its impossible hard to play on console, the dialogue is too small especially on a 55 inch 4K Samsumg.

So the guy that Zhuge was able to verify said that the next xbox will have ray tracing earlier in the thread. That sounds exciting.

The progress Rare has made into making a service based game is really interesting to me. They are actually getting really good at it. From the closed studio it was in the past to this very communicative team. Fascinating.

Last Sea of Thieves update seems to be welcomed positively. I can't imagine their second team is working on a GaaS-like title, but they do have quite some experience with it now.

Outer Worlds is last multiplatform game from Obsidian = everyone loves it -> 2k wants a sequal, MS is not too keen as they want Obsidian to focus on exclusive stuff -> Outer Worlds becomes modern classic.

Just saying.

People who say that outer worlds being multi platform is actually a good thing are both right and wrong. Let's say the game sells 10 million copies between ps4,Xbox, ms store, and steam. While that is fantastic and gets the IP more exposure for a potential Xbox exclusive sequel it also drives take-two's asking price up through the roof.

I think priority in negotiations with take-two should be to secure publishing rights to any sequels. And do this before the first game comes out if possible. Second get this game to launch on gamepass day one. Third should be to get the outer worlds as a full exclusive, but assuming it's announced for PlayStation next week than it will be too late for that.

No.
I said "Xbox will support ray tracing", that's not equal to next gen, nor hardware.

Maybe ASIC is a way to deliver a cheaper solution for next gen, but it's not confirmed now.

Will we be seeing the Windows Store for gaming addressed at GDC? Phil Spencer brought it up specifically at X0 that they are aware of the problems with the Win10 store and want to provide something better.

Well, exactly - Microsoft don't have to actually sell you on the idea of the latter. If you want to play Fortnite or CoD you really don't have a choice - you have to pay for Live Gold.

2k lack a lot of leverage here though, the choices are: either get paid by MS (assuming MS want to buy them out) or the game will never get a sequel and Obsidian will make something else and 2k dont get paid, for all we know there is an expiry date on that first option too (maybe/maybe not).

I understand MS letting Obsidian keep their existing deal, not get involved in it etc but long-term I dont think 2k have a lot to gain by holding onto their deal if MS want to take it over, I imagine their shareholders might not be overly thrilled if they learn 2k got offered a good deal (cash, or something) to part ways with their deal and end up with nothing instead.

Im sure a ready made successful new IP for MS is nice but I dont think they'll be all that devastated to let Obsidian make their dream game unrestricted for budget and resources compared to other projects instead.

poor Phil, it used to take him just a couple of days to tour his studios but now it's going to take a couple of weeks - a month to go round them all....and by this time next year, it will take him 2 months to visit every 1P dev.
No, no, no. You're misunderstanding the situation. This is Phil's secret secret loophole. He gets to travel the world on company time. :p

Next up:
Mistwalker in Hawaii and Japan
Mercurysteam in Spain
Asobo in France
Ovosonico in Italy
ACE Team in Chile
etc. etc.

Should we expect full store integration for the next xbox (scarlet)? So we would have the microsoft store instead of the xbox store and windows store, so all games would be play anywhere by default.

He straight out couldn't believe you can subscribe to a $10 service to download dozens of full-version games with unlimited access. He just ... Couldn't believe it.
And that's why I mentioned earlier why MS needs to push XGP promotion even further. Sure, we know about it and what's the value of it or how works, but they need to reach regular folks and casuals. X018 was plastered with XGP and that is good direction.

Hows the HDMI in with the X!???? Back when I had the OG Xbox One and kinect I used it alot but last year I stopped.

Just this past week I ordered a Swtich and I currently have a ps4 pro so all of my hdmi ports are taken. Then I remember the Xbox has an HDMI in!!!! So this way my 3 ports will all be games.

So freed up a slot by plugging my comcast in my xbox. Anything different with the X!? Its not reserving power now to run my comcast picture right!?

It's fine. I use it on the X same as the OG. Comcast still shit though. I hate their new boxes.

There is no different store, is it all one store. The Microsoft Store is just that...the same store you use on your PC is the same one that it on your Xbox, and on Windows Mixed Reality, Surface Hub, Windows 10 Mobile (rip) devices. All games won't be play anywhere by default, that is a developer decision and will stay that way. The only thing that I could possibly see for next gen is that all games will be required to be able to run in the cloud (like how all games have a digital counterpart) where this generation of games it will be a sign up type of thing like how BC is handled.

You sure about that? I thought the XBOX store was a separate entity on console vs. MS store on PC. Maybe they share some back end but it's clearly a different experience.

I understando what you're saying but I was thinking more along the lines of every game playable on scarlet has to playable on windows too and conversely every windows game has to be playable on scarlet, but I understand the reasons why MS might never do that (burninig bridges with devs and publishers).
