Great news but context is still key. How was the X performing last year?
The X launched in November of last year so this is really the first year that we have to gauge it's success.

Do you think the success of the X makes it more possible for MS to launch a next gen system at 499 assuming it provides justified value? Or is this the type of pricing you reserve for a premium mid gen upgrade?
You said this forum? I also don't know if you've read the article but mostly there is nothing wrong with them.

I'm certain the backseat modding is appreciated.I like how console warring is specifically stated as against the rules in the FAQ, but threads like this constantly go to shit, full of obvious bait and troll posts, and it's just left alone. Mods post in threads that are fully off the rails and don't do anything.
Why even have those kind of rules if you're only going to enforce them in 1/100 cases?
And they ended up selling roughly the same number of units. Because of the way the worldwide markets shake out, Sony's floor and MS' ceiling are pretty close. Barring some dramatic changes in the market, this will likely continue for the forseeable future. And that's okay. MS doesn't have to sell as many units as Sony. Not in a world where services like GamePass are potentially driving revenue.
Hell look at Sony themselves. The PS4 is already far and away their most successful hardware, despite the fact that it won't sell near what the PS2 did, due to things like Plus subs, service games and digital content.
Oh, you're one of those who think this is a PS centric forum, there isn't much to talk about anymore I guess. It's a lot easier to find the plentiful negative articles than trying to scour endless posts on this (and the old) forum. It shouldn't be hard to imagine that a Playstation-centric forum like this one would go along with these articles.
Pretty sure they aren't investing because of how successful they have been. They're finally investing in 2018 because they've seen how bad their losing. In 2014 the news was all about Sony going bankrupt & Microsoft was king of cash. Sony still took a big chance and invested heavily in games while Microsoft just bragged about their cash. Now we're here.
You didn't ask me, but I'm here so...
My gut tells me there will be multiple price/performance offerings for whatever is next from Xbox. An entry level digital only/streaming device at a low price, a mid-range with better guts and an optical drive, and a high end performance model at a premium price.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Microsoft to save the super highend model until midpoint next generation to do another refresh launch? You didn't ask me, but I'm here so...

Microsoft is rebuilding brand loyalty, and these numbers show it.
What's phenomenal is how the Xbox One X is doing and how that has led to sales increase YoY.

Ok? It's the biggest market by a large marginEurope is PlayStation land.
Japan is Nintendo/PlayStation land.
US is the only place I could see growth for next gen.

Ah so you're imagining frequent refreshes ala smartphones?
Im sure they will do another mid-gen refresh, however it is important to note that OG Ps4 at one point this generation was viewed as "highend model". If you play on PC you understand that technology gets old fast as there is always something better next year.Wouldn't it make more sense for Microsoft to save the super highend model until midpoint next generation to do another refresh launch?
Releasing a $499 "niche" product to an already niche demographic (Xbox owners) was an extremely courageous move. The X was mostly responded to with eye rolls & "too little, too late" from this forum when it launched. Almost no one thought it was going to be the success that it turned out to be.
The Pro was (sadly, imo) designed as a 400 dollar machine releasing in 2016. Aside from the noise issues, I don't know what else they could have done hardware-wise.

Paid off in what way though? If you have no idea how many units they're moving how can you accurately evaluate how something has paid off? They're selling units like they did in 2014/2015. Is that a metric that screams success? It was a bold move to release a 500$ console so late in comsile life cycle. For many it was too little, too late and too expensive. The bottom line is it paid off.
I love my PS4 Pro as much as the next person, Spider-Man is my game of the year, but you're lying to yourself it you don't think this is a PS centric forum. Just look at this thread.
???This is a PS centric forum just like GaF was...I mean you don't need to look around much to realize that. If you don't think it is then I think you need to take those blinders off.

Well, in Spain PS is about 7x bigger than Xbox, and if it's not as pronounced in the other coutries PS is way bigger than Xbox (I think in Germany it's like 4x, same in France (and I'm French so I know how Xbox is perceived here)).
What would have happened if they didnt release Xbox X? Would they have continued to do as poorly as they did in 2017?Paid off in what way though? Thanks for the responses. I hadn't considered having a high end launch SKU with multiple other SKUs because I assumed the logistics were hard for the launch of a new gen.Pricing is still very important for a consoles success. So I'd expect this to be reserved for a high end model / mid gen upgrade.
They can have a tie in US next-gen but Worlwide is a lock for Sony. ERA is dreaming because I think a lot of people here want Xbox as leader but problably is not gonna happen.Europe is PlayStation land.
Japan is Nintendo/PlayStation land.
US is the only place I could see growth for next gen.

besides UK? Yeah noone cares nowadays... He is not lying.Do you live in Europe? I mean yeah, PS is bigger, but you make it sound like nobody cares about Xbox, which is a ridiculous notion.

It wasn't that long ago people were saying this was a Nintendo centric forum.
Maybe if people just started talking round the odd posts from users saying something they don't like instead of getting into constant back and forths then complaining the threads are ruined it would get a bit better.
Japan is not Playstation land lol. Not even close.Europe is PlayStation land.

Yeah it's doing incredibly well
Honestly a much larger chunk of Xbox One sales than I ever thought it would be

I remember before the X launch, when people were trying to get figures on Pro sales and estimate where the 1X might land, and (obviously unconfirmed) figures were landing around 1:5 for refresh systems vs base models. I've gotten the impression 1X sales might legitimately be the lion's share of Xbox sales. Any way to indicate if that's a fair ballpark?
With it being a "larger chunk" than anticipated, is that at the detriment of the base models? Or is it that both the X and the base/S models are succeeding well in 2018?Yeah it's doing incredibly well

It's deserved. I've had every piece of console hardware on the market this generation except the PS4 Slim (PS4 Pro, PS4, Switch, OG X1, X1S) and the Xbox One X is by-far the best total package out of all of them hardware-wise. It's powerful, it's quiet, the UHD Blu-ray output is acceptable now, and the Xbox controllers are the best thing around. This year, especially with RDR2, it's put some real distance between it and the PS4 Pro in terms of visual quality.
The X is so good that I buy every multiplat there now, and after having PSN sub since the service launched I cancelled mine this fall.
I look forward to see what Microsoft comes out with next from a hardware standpoint.
