I am searching in google but I do not find an answer to my query.

I am planning to get an XBOX ONE X this Christmas and i have one external hard drive (Seagate 2TB green one) currently connected to my normal XBOX with 87 games and 55.5 GB available.

Basically i want to know , wheni get my new console, can just plug and play my external drive without losing any data or having to reformat my drive?

And also, i know that some XBOX ONE X games are heavier than the normal versions, I am going to be asked for a patch will be my choice to install it or it will be automatic (asking due to the free space that i currently have)?

Any guidance will be really appreciated.

Yeah just plug it in. Don't need to do anything. You can take that HDD to any other Xbox (like, a friends for example) and your games will all work fine (as long as you're logged in on the console). Don't need to do anything with it.

I think the patches will automatically download? I really can't remember, it's been a year or so since I upgraded.

You can just plug it in and use it as-is, it's really convenient. The first time you start each game, there's an extra momentary "handshake," but after that it's the same as usual. Some games may prompt you to update with higher quality assets, but that depends on your auto-update settings.

You can just plug and play and it will be good to go but it will take a short bit to index everything on your HDD.

In your Xbox One's settings you can go set it to update all the games possible to One X versions so they are ready once you switch

The hard drive can just be plugged into the new console, no issues.

You can already pre-patch Xbox One X versions of games now if you want to, have to switch it on in settings.

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide and go to Settings > System > Backup & transfer.
  2. Select Download 4K game content.
  3. When available 4K content has downloaded, copy those games to external storage so they're ready for use on Xbox One X.
After you do that all games thatbsupport X will download the 4k patches.

As for X patches, when your on the X your console will download them regardless you don't have an option, so you may need to make some space or grab additional HD.

Plug and play. May have to sign in to your Live account for authentication but I don't remember.

Prepare for some big patches also if you own a lot of games that have been enhanced for Xbox One X. 4k assets and texture packs are pretty considerable in size

You can also back up your console's settings to the hard drive to reduce the number of out-of-box steps you need to follow when getting the new console:

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/console/back-up-your-settings

So to summarize:
  1. Back up your settings

  2. Move all your games to the external HDD

  3. Download your 4K updates ahead of time

  4. Move the HDD over to the new console and fire up the new console - pretty much everything should be there and ready to go
